I met this guy at the Birmingham Memorabilia last week. Such a frail old guy nowadays....told him that he had given me endless amounts of joy in my life with his performances. He gave me the sweetest smile before signing a picture to me... Easily one of the best things I've done in my life, so far!

I was lucky enough to have been "touched" by this musical in two ways. I have met the great Ron Moody, my mother taught his children at primary school in North London, and a pleasure and an honour it was. I also worked with Lionel Bart's niece and I know that Moody was in mind when Barty wrote the musical. As someone else said a great Fagin, only bettered by Sir Alex Guinness in the "straight" film - though that was much darker.

The best performance in a fine movie full of memorable performances. When I was in amateur theatre I used to replay his scenes in this film over and over and just marvel at his expressions, his gestures, what he could do with his eyes...everything! God bless and RIP Ron Moody.

In those days, the Oscars really missed a lot of great performances from across the pond. Many actors such as Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole and others were not given the recognition they deserve - and this particular performance definitely is one of them. Ron Moody was superb and the musical Oliver was something that was so very true in it’s visual depiction of Dickens. I had thought the entire production and cast were wonderful. And now, seeing it again after so many years, I think it’s even better than I thought it was. Ron Moody’s Fagin is one of those performances / characterizations for the history books.

    Lyrics :
    A man's got a heart, hasn't he?
    Joking apart, hasn't he?
And tho' I'd be the first one to say that I wasn't a saint
I'm finding it hard to be really as black as they paint
    I'm reviewing the situation
Can a fellow be a villain all his life?
    All the trials and tribulations!
Better settle down and get myself a wife.
And a wife would cook and sew for me,
And come for me, and go for me,
And go for me, and nag at me,
The fingers, she will wag at me.
The money whe will take me.
A misery, she'll make from me...
I think I'd better thing it out again!
A wife you can keep, anyway
    I'd rather sleep, anyway.
Left without anyone in the world,
    And I'm starting from now
So "how to win friends and to influence people"
    So how?
    I'm reviewing the situation,
I must quickly look up ev'ryone I know.
Titled people -- with a station
Who can help me make a real impressive show!
I will own a suite at Claridges,
And run a fleet of carriages,
And wave at all the duchesses
With friendliness, as much as is
    Befitting of my new estate...
"Good morrow to you, magistrate!" Heheheh
I think I'd better think it out again.
So where shall I go -- somebody?
    Who do I know? Nobody!
    All my dearest companions
Have always been villains and thieves...
So at my time of life
I should start turning over new leaves?
    I'm reviewing the situation.
If you want to eat -- you've got to earn a bob!
    Is it such a humiliation
For a robber to perform an honest job?
So a job I'm getting, possibly,
I wonder who my boss'll be?
I wonder if he'll take to me...?
What bonuses he'll make to me...?
I'll start at eight and finish late,
At normal rate, and all.but wait!
I think I'd better think it out again.
    What happens when I'm seventy?
    Must come a time... seventy.
When you're old, and it's cold
And who cares if you live or you die,
    Your one consolation's the money
    You may have put by...
    I'm reviewing the situation.
I'm a bad 'un and a bad 'un I shall stay!
    You'll be seeing no transformation,
But it's wrong to be a rogue in ev'ry way.
I don't want nobody hurt for me,
Or made to do the dirt for me.
This rotten life is not for me.
It's getting far too hot for me.
There is no in between for me
But who will change the scene for me?
Don't want no one to rob for me.
But who will find a job for me,
I think I'd better think it out again!
    Hey!

Indeed, an example of this could be say Andre the Giant. According to zither Biography channel, the very condition that made him a 'giant' is the very one that killed him but apparently in the end he was caring, friendly and so on, perhaps a little heart-broken of not being able to wrestle, (I know him more for being in the Princess Bride), but nevertheless selfless.:)
Question is, what about Robin Williams? He lived making others laugh but it seems he died of suicide.

+Aeonboom Ron Moody was Jewish. Jews do not believe in "R.I.P.", as it represents a Latin phrase from Christianity, considered by many Jews to be akin to placing a cross over their grave. Most Christians clearly are not aware of this, and mean no offense when they say "R.I.P", but that doesn't stop it from grating on Jewish ears when applied to Jews.
So, people who are tempted to write "R.I.P." concerning a deceased person of Jewish ancestry, "I think you'd better think it out again . . .".

Love it! In an interview Ron Moody spoke on his concern on playing the character Fagin because in Dickerson's novel he was depected as a dark personality. One I like that he was conscience enough and knowledgable to be concern how he was going to do this Jewish character to not offend Jews and I feel he was successful of giving this time period movie a reality of what one does for survival and made a multi dimenional person that was funny and felt empathy and cared for his boys and Nancy but knew he was getting old and could not maintain the present situation forever and put stuff back for his future. It sad to realize that he probably no longer with us because the last interview I just watch he was an old man but still sharp with jokes and stories behind the fliming of Oliver. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

Everyone in this movie gives a fantastic and iconic performance, but Ron Moody just steals the damn show. The range in this performance is just incredible, from hilarious to touching to unnerving he nails them all.

Absolutely love the bones of this man. 11 years old (1981), family is having a Christmas party on the next street. I've got a tape of Oliver Twist, read by Ron, on my tape player. Slightly drunk family member came to take me to the festivities. No Uncle Russel, I need to finish this. One of the most distilled memories I have. Ta Mate.

rossmcl177 Ron Moody wasn’t the original as Alec Guinness was the first to play Fagin in film in 1948. I do , however, agree that Ron Moody’s performance is the best.

    Lyrics
    A man's got a heart, hasn't he?
    Joking apart, hasn't he?
And tho' I'd be the first one to say that I wasn't a saint
I'm finding it hard to be really as black as they paint
    I'm reviewing the situation
Can a fellow be a villain all his life?
    All the trials and tribulations!
Better settle down and get myself a wife.
And a wife would cook and sew for me,
And come for me, and go for me,
And go for me, and nag at me,
The fingers, she will wag at me.
The money whe will take me.
A misery, she'll make from me...
I think I'd better thing it out again!
A wife you can keep, anyway
    I'd rather sleep, anyway.
Left without anyone in the world,
    And I'm starting from now
So "how to win friends and to influence people"
    So how?
    I'm reviewing the situation,
I must quickly look up ev'ryone I know.
Titled people -- with a station
Who can help me make a real impressive show!
I will own a suite at Claridges,
And run a fleet of carriages,
And wave at all the duchesses
With friendliness, as much as is
    Befitting of my new estate...
"Good morrow to you, magistrate!" Oh gawd!

What a great film this was and how well it has stood the passage of time. Every character was so well cast and acted, even in the minor parts, they could not have been improved upon. And of course Ron Moody was supreme. Anyone else playing the part subsequently must have been dreading the comparison with Moody's Fagin. Unbeatable, but its success ruined its creator, Lionel Bart.
