    I may have spotted owls nearby, and they need a boost in population. Maybe they will accept the same kind of box as barred owl?

    I think I saw a Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker Woodpecker today in my backyard. I'm in Ottawa. Is this even possible ? I had never seen anything like it before in real life.

    • @gilligallou
      @gilligallou  Год назад

      Awesome, yes they are very common here, perhaps not as much in the city , but very common, the red shafted tends to be more to the west of Canada 😊👌

    Hey, I could use some help, the house behind me and much of the vegetation is going to be demolished so they can build a new house. I have an eastern screech owl living in one of the trees. I have bought a new box specifically for that species. My question is will they choose a better location if one is available? Is there a way to coax it to choose the new box? I am guessing it will be higher than the current nest. He/she has been hanging around for over a year but I don't know exactly where the nest is.
    Any thoughts would be helpful
    Thanks
    John

      hi john, the nest must be close by, how with the loss of habitat and construction they may move on, Hard to say, best bet is to offer them a nesting site like you have done. Hopefully it works out, keep me posted., thanks , Bob

    Could uou explain the mesh thing to help the young owls ?

    • @gilligallou
      @gilligallou  4 месяца назад

      We provide a very tight mesh on the inside of the box to allow young birds to climb up to exit the box as the grown and practice flapping their wings.

    What type of wood do you use? If using plywood, what type?

    • @gilligallou
      @gilligallou  2 года назад

      All reclaimed wood from old turn of the century barns, mostly Hemlock, some red pine and eastern white cedar.

    Have made a barred owl nest box to these specs. Just wondering about the mesh. What do you use? Is it a risk that the baby owls could get their claws stuck in there? Thanks for your great info.

    • @gilligallou
      @gilligallou  7 месяцев назад +1

      we use what's called carpenters cloth. it is securely fastened. Owlets are big enough that their claws are strong, we haven't had any problems, enjoy, thanks, Bob
