According to the "Owl rules" in my area, they find new accomodation when readying for the new crew of offspring. I expect that to happen around march 2021 and will make an update video at the end of April 2021. I will also make another owl house, placed atleast 200meters (600ft) away from the first one (territorial disputes) to increase my chances of attracting them. This place is packed with rats (I NEED AN OWL NOW😂) and my cat can't eat all the mice around. I have caught mice in the 20's in my traps. I have to try to keep the numbers down, it's a mouseyear in Norway, and my house has got some mouse entrances that I have not found yet. If you put up an owl house, check it and you only find a mouse in it.. It is a owl male trying to attract a female. Thanks for watching and I hope to see you in late April 2021 for the follow up :) *Have a great day!*
Love how you pointed out that owls are amazing pest controllers! I live near a lot of wineries and many have owl boxes/keep owls to avoid using pesticides on their grapes/ other fruits
Yeah that's a great idea! I love it when business includes animals/nature as part of their model. I've read some wineries also use falcons to scare away some birds that eat grapes too... Go ECO! :)
I need a barred owl house! My problem is getting it up into a tree! Have a barred who lives in our woods. Comes early evening/night and hangs out by my bird feeders. She scoops up the mice that come to eat the seed on the ground. Great reduction in mice in the house this winter! I want to show my gratitude. I would install a hot tub in her house too. She deserves it!!!
You don't need to climb a tree to install an owl box. Just erect a post 15ft.-20ft high with the owl house on top. Make it so you can tilt the post up and back down again so you can clean the box out after every season. That's what I'm doing now.
We just moved to an area with lots of bird life & have seen a couple owls by the pond nearby. This is great, I will be building an owl home like this, thank you!
Thanks. I love helping the little fellows. Last year we planted lots of flowers for the bumblebees. Made two more bird boxes and let the bushes grow. Every year we try to improve the conditions for the nature that surrounds us.
Nice build. I watched because while I have owls that frequent the area I cleared for my homestead, I want to keep them there for rodent control as well as just to see them more. I didn’t realize I could build them a home like my bat boxes. Good info friend.
I am a photographer and love seeing and taking pictures of owls. It is a very good message to limit rat poison because it inadvertently kills the owls, which causes even more rodents increasing the problem.
Really nice box,one any Tawny owl would be proud of. Im going to be setting up a Little Owl box in my Woodland soon. Look forward to seeing your progress. Best wishes from Devon Uk.
You need to drill 4 drainage & ventilation holes in the four corners of the box floor. Ideally they need to be triangular shaped holes right on the corners of the box floor.
Yeah, that is if you make a leaky roof 😊 The three planks I use in the bottom have cracks in between them, should take care of any problems of ventilation/drainage. Thanks for taking an interest!🙏

Haha! I first thought that your thumbnail showed a Ural Owl, usually one of the most fiercely protective owls, particularly when their young are fledging, and for some time thereafter. If you want these as neighbors/guests, keep their "hotels" far from your residence and travel routes. They are known as "Slaguggla" (attacking owl) in neighboring Sweden for very good reasons. Owls usually attack to defend nests and fledgelings in complete silence, though Great Horned Owls often utter warning/anger calls between flying strikes. Many people who are completely unaware that owl nests/babies are nearby are suddenly struck by taloned feet in the darkness.
Wow! You have the eyes of an owl :) I have mostly made 120 views videos and did not think about crediting, that was wrong. I added a line in the description for M. @@MartinWoodStudios .. We have an owl, maybe a couple of owls that come around and gather up squirrels off of our bird feeders.. I probably don't have as much property as you do. I'm going to give the owls a try I find them very fascinating.. as my father once told me "you'll never hear the word yes if you're afraid of the word no". and " you'll never succeed if you don't try" .. thank you for the video.
@@Subcoolschool It's a true blessing giving nature back. Last year we planted a lot of flowers to feed the bumblebees and the others that love those kind of things. No such things as weeds, insects love it! and this year it's blossoming all over the place. Wise words from your father - I have tried and failed a lot of times and still I try and fail. The trick is to never give up :) Owls are super cool and hopefully next year we will get new neighboors
Is it possible to put a few boxes in the same tree? If not, how far away should they be placed? There are not many trees around here but I can hear owls.
you can find a lot of info up that alley on this link. www.whatbirdsareinmybackyard.com/2020/04/attract-great-horned-owls-to-your-yard-with-nest-box.html
I live in Colorado (USA). I'm wondering if attracting an owl would keep away large rats that attack my garden. The rats would probably outweigh the owl, but would an owl keep them away? I don't care if they eat them, I just want them to go away.
Try building a barn owl shelter. After reading more about owls I think they are the better hunter of rats. Yes, they will kill and eat rats. Introducing Weasels could be considered too if that is a possibility for you.
Anyone who takes the time to make a house for the owls deserves all my gratitude. Can we also keep at least some trees for the wildlife? Live and let live.
@@MartinWoodStudios Thank you so much! I really adore your craftsmanship and respect your considerateness. The owl house is deep enough to prevent the helpless owlets from droping out of nest, which means death.

I found this video after watching content from the barn owl trust. Not the most interesting story but I thought I'd tell you haha
@@chiefstain sharing is caring! and I do love to have a Chiefstain in my pack :) The native Americans has or had such a good bond with earth and people. Welcome to little Norway!
Next video: how to build a rat house and attract them
Great Idea! 😂
Great job and I want one! But since this is hosting wildlife, I would not have stained it.
Does your Owl House contain any witches and demons?
Mostly ghosts as I have not seen anything yet.
👍👍👍
💪
What is that black sheet you have putted on the roof and what is the benefit of it ?
It's roofing material, so that water wont get in the little owls heads :)
Did an owl turn up in spring?
I have an owl for you box ! LOL He is in my backyard!
Send him over! 😀
I looked you up... I'm building one!
Happy to hear! Placement of the owl house is key for success :) I had none this year. So I will move my first owl house a bit further away from the houses and closer to the edge of the forest.
@@MartinWoodStudios .. We have an owl, maybe a couple of owls that come around and gather up squirrels off of our bird feeders.. I probably don't have as much property as you do. They only have a few acres, But it is all wooded. I have given it over to nature and birds mostly..
Did you make that really beautiful wooden door seen behind you in the closing shot?
Good luck. I hope an owl decides to make a home in your yard.
Hi! Thank you 🙏 No, I bought this property some six years ago and the cabin came with it.
Is it possible to put a few boxes in the same tree?
If not, how far away should they be placed?
There are not many trees around here but I can hear owls.
The rule is 200meter or 600ft apart.
@@MartinWoodStudios Cheers!
What kind of wood did you use?
Doesn't matter really but birch for the front and pine or spruce for the rest. Leftovers... don't break the bank.
What would the measurements need to be for a large owl like the Great Horned Owl?
you can find a lot of info up that alley on this link. www.whatbirdsareinmybackyard.com/2020/04/attract-great-horned-owls-to-your-yard-with-nest-box.html
@@MartinWoodStudios Thank You
Må få en update om noen flytter inn da!😃👍
Helt klart! 2021...
🤙🤙🤙🤙
Ida used a jig saw for the hole
That works too!
Is this a bad idea if I have a puppy in my yard?
I think it will be fine as long as it's not a bag dog like chiuaua
Want to do something like this in Virginia USA
Go for it!
What type/kind of wood did you use?
Front is birch, the rest is spruce. It doesnt matter..
@@MartinWoodStudios i am thinking of building one with cedar
Anyone who takes the time to make a house for the owls deserves all my gratitude. Can we also keep at least some trees for the wildlife? Live and let live.
Good thoughts Yanlin. Here in Norway there are an abundance of trees for the wild creatures and that is the way I prefer it. 🙏
@@MartinWoodStudios Thank you so much! I really adore your craftsmanship and respect your considerateness. The owl house is deep enough to prevent the helpless owlets from droping out of nest, which means death.
@@yanlinchen9083 🙏❤
If an owl doesn't move in to it then a herd of elephants might.
lets hope not :)
I’m a Lazy Guy, proceeds to lift a log, chainsaw it, beat it with a hammer, chisel, 5m up in a tree
I have my moments 😂
