  • Some of the earliest nesters in our areas, Barred Owls begin the process as early as February or March of each year.
To be prepared, installing barred owl nesting boxes during the fall months is a great idea.
Watch as Bob walks us through the process of preparing the box, adding a perch and safely hanging it in the right tree!

I should have my owl box sometime in February. Do you think that's too late to hang it? I'm going to have to add the branch structure - i LOVE that idea for the owletts to explore and get some wing practice in. Great videos, from one bird nerd to another. All my best from central Pennsylvania.

hi there, thank you , It may be a little late for this year, that said anytime is the best time to create habitat and nesting sites, pick a place furthest from human activity, aim the entry away from the prevailing wind. Have fun, enjoy and be with nature. Thank you. ,,, Bob

I built one of these today. I put leaves in the base of it, is that OK? Or should I have put something else

Hm-m-m. Title says "How To Install...", yet all we got was a very nice description of the box itself - nothing about how high, how to fasten it to the tree, etc.

LongBinh70 , I like to get the access out of the west wind, so generally that means , south, south east. 20-30 ft in the air, depends some what on a nice clear flight path in and out. 👌👌 😊🇨🇦 thank you

Really enjoyed your video and hope to make a few of these, or is one best for a 1 acre lot due to competition? Not sure if they are territorial. Also, this is a serious question. Where did you get that jacket/outer shirt. It's awesome and I've been looking for such a thing.

Steven Rochon hi Steve yes only one for a lot that size, keep as far away from Hunan activity as possible . I’ll have to look at my shirt to see which one it is, lol I let you know if I know where it’s from, I was in the shop there so it could be some ol shop shirt and who knows where it came from, thanks , Bob 👍

Michael L morning, we use standard owl box plans from Cornell lab of ornithology and then modify the box to incorporate the large perch .

Did you ever have any nest in it? Also curious how you mounted it to the tree? Just some screws? Read where people have trouble with screws backing out.

I may have missed it but is there a recommended height for installation and which compass direction should the hole face?
