My school textbook had a passage that introduced it and my mind only went "oh hell nah, this language is crazy as it is and you want me now to figure out swapped words?" I was also leaning English at the same time, it was too much for my brain XD

We have the same thing in Platinean Spanish, we call it Vesre ("Revés" backwards, so "Backwards" backwards, just like Verlan). It's part of Platinean slang along with Lunfardo (a mixture of Spanish and Italian).
This is my EXACT EXPERIENCE as an American who spent 6 years learning French in school and then went to France at 22 and had a COMPLETE AND TOTAL IDENTITY CRISIS when I couldnt understand anyone nor be understood!!! That "level 2 unlocked" moment of learning what Verlan is is SOOOOO RELATABLE ITS INSANE!! Im so glad because i wanted to practice (im now pretty good i go to france and 90% of people do not switch to english and when they do i correct them saying my ticket was very expensive and i didnt buy it to keep speaking english) by thinking of a standup routine on french about learning french and verlan, only to find OF COURSE someone thought of it already and did it SOOO much better than I could've!!!! We do that in English, it's called a Spoonerism, and yeah it's just for fun. Pig latin is quite different, in fact it's what the French do with Verlan 💡 🤔

C'est normal si tu n'as jamais analysé le mot de près. Je connais des gens qui utilisaient tout le temps les mots meuf, keuf ou teuf sans se rendre compte que c'était du verlan avant qu'on leur dise. Dans le même genre, les mots "loufoque" et "en loucedé" viennent d'un vieil argot parisien appelé louchebem. Je te laisse faire une recherche sur Wikipedia ;).

i think japanese does the backwards slang too! for example, most people know "senpai" as a suffix for someone more experienced in a field or older than you, but if they behave childishly, or do not maintain the formality typical of Asian social structures, people refer to them as "pai-sen"
