  • Sadly I haven't used my 1977 Jaguar XJ12 for over a year. I have been busy with other cars on the channel and due to the current world situation there weren't any car show or events this summer to take it to. However, now i'm waking up and old v12 but it almost ends in a disaster!

    Many years ago I had a Series 2 V12 with a GM400 auto transmission. It developed an oil leak that would drip on my driveway and it took me a year and a half to discover the cause. In the meantime the sump pan had numerous gaskets, I inspected the torque converter with a magnifier for micro porosity, I was absolutely stumped until one day, whilst laying underneath I had a sudden moment of clarity, a revelation.
    I inspected the dipstick/filler tube and found that the small O ring that sealed the tube into the box had hardened over the years and was no longer completely sealed.
    After spending more than £150 over the course of eighteen months I fixed the problem for £0.58p. I was both elated and furious, mainly at myself.
    I no longer have that Jag, but I do have an X308 4.0 V8 which is actually almost as smooth as the V12.
    Good luck with yours, it's a beautiful car and you're a lucky man to have such a transport of delight.
    All the very best, Dave.

      Thanks for the suggestions Dave! I think you’re right that it may be from the dipstick or maybe the breather. So far it hasn’t left a huge mess on the ground again. I’ll have a look at that I-ring but otherwise the cure seems to be to use it.
      The Jaguar V8 is a fine engine too. I’m about to do a lot of work to one here on the channel. Maybe you’ll enjoy those videos

    Wow, watching your videos is like looking at my younger self. I was into the same cars and I owned the same cars. There was a British car scene in America back then which has all but dissipated. I owned a '77 XJ12L, which I spent many hours tinkering with. I also owned a Vanden Plas XJ40 (Essentially same as Daimer) from 9000 miles until 130,000 miles. Today I still own a '92 XJS V12 convertible, which spends most of its time in storage. With regard to your fuel leak, there's a possibility that the fuel tank itself is leaking. It was a very common problem. I only used one tank throughout my entire ownership because the other tank had a leak. Replacing the fuel tank is a pain of a job. I started it but eventually gave up.

    I paint my exhaust pipes and muffler with acrylic paint. the heat bakes it on. Never have seen them rust out. Paint everything under the car and it is sealed in plastic, and never rusts. If there is surface rust, sand with 80 or 150 grid first. I live where they use salt in the winter. It destroys cars, but not mine. Your XJ12 is very nice. paint it with acrylic under it, and it will keep it from rusting. Painted bolts come off easier then rusty ones. You can brush it on and spray the rest. Great job Adam, with yours. The things I recommend to you, I have used for Forty years and they work very, very well, or I wouldn't use them. The lube product I told you about is like night and day. I never BS anyone.

    My XJS had the surge tank professionally sealed and replaced the main fuel tank. The original main tank had a dodgie repair job and was porous. When I brought it 5 years ago it literally ran on 3 of 12 cylinders. All because the tank was pourous and literally suffocated it of fuel with gunk accumulated over the years. Always enjoy watching "Vice Grip Garage" on youtube as he always starts old cars by not even using the original fuel system for this reason.

    Adam that 77 V12 is a keeper. 80,000K and 75lbs oil pressure..its still wet behind the wings. My 88 V12 has 235K and 20lbs oil pressure (must be sensor) yet purrs like a kitten and my spare 87 V12 has 180K and 45 lbs oil pressure.. As for that noise from fuel pump both of my V12's use generic ones and are quiet. We are lucky on the West coast of Canada no auto inspection needed unless coming from another province. Thanks for telling me where oil pressure sensor is. Glad you know youtubes Project Farm, check out its test on ceramic car polishes. The low cost Turtle one will blow you away. • @joeblogs8193

    The fuel leak is a metal pipe above the beaver panel (welded in) If you dont wish to replace pipe straight away, cut away the rusted portion and replace with rubber fuel hose and two clamps. This fix will get you out of trouble. One thing I noticed. I it does not have drain holes in rear muffler, drill a hole at the front at the lowest point. This allows water to drain and will help stop rusting from inside the muffler. Most Bosch fuel pumps make noise, even when new. just a matter of luck. You can feel if its getting Hot/warm after some use, this will indicate premature failure. I wont comment on the fuel tank sealer. best to replace them!. Love the Series 2's. Its what I have, A Daimler Double six VDP and XJC 4.2. Keep the videos coming Adam. well done

    I have tried POR15 tank sealer. I have mixed reviews. It is very difficult clean out the inside of the misshaped tank that XJ's have and take a ton of time to do it right. The other big question is how bad the tanks are mine were very corroded I found a small pile of mud that filled the gap between tank and valence panel. I refinished the inside of the tank with por15 and while refinishing the outside I wore a hole in the tank. Also in my area it was difficult to find the gaskets and pre-filters for the tank. Also if you do refinish them be careful with the o-ring groove at the top of the tanks if you get any sealer in there the tolerance will be off and you will fight a lost battle when trying to refit the filler cap. After all the work refinishing the tanks, I ended up trashing both of them for different reasons. If you are looking at redoing the tanks consider new ones they can be had for not ridiculous money.

    Hi Adam. Good luck with this problem ! It doesn't appear to be the tank and l didn't realise the modern ethonal fuels rotted out the tanks !😨😨 Even though the lines are pretty recent doesn't mean they haven't deteriorated. It's not a quick job to drop the tank covers particularly if the rear centre bumper bolts start turning ! 😨😨 The joy of classic car ownership ! And how on earth you could afford this as a student , heaven knows! Mind you it must have been great taking ladies out! ( says he who had his XJ6 at 23 !) That rear centre panel looks like it may need attention at some point. Heaven to drive though ! As much as l enjoyed my XJ6's the V12 is so silky smooth and very rapid ! Good luck Adam !

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 года назад

      To my understanding ethanol attracts any moisture so tanks can rust out more easily. It was a struggle as a student but well worth it 🙂
      That panel does need to be sorted at some point. It’s pretty solid overall but when I paint it I think there will be small amounts of welding in a few places.
      It’s the smoothness combined with the quietness of the V12 that I really like. There’s nothing like it

    Hi Adam, I am restoring a Jaguar E-Type V12 at the moment and when I took the engine and cooling system apart I found some gummy residue flocking and sticking to the inside of the engine and all cooling components. Now I don’t know what stuff they dumped into the cooling system but I would never recommend anything like it inside or anywhere near my cars. There is to much „snake oil“ on the market. Get the tank professionelly repaired and stay on the safe side.
    Btw., what they tried to fix was just the wrong pressure cap on the radiator that needed to be replaced with the correct spring pressure rating and the problem of overflowing water was solved.

      I knew only 2 people who used Evans and both removed it and use normal coolant again. I cannot tell you why, but all the „good“ stuff I read about doesn’t seem to hold up. I will, until my car is broken in, use just destilled water and once everything works I will replace it with the orange type coolant (which I dislike too). I have a problem with my XJ6 series 2 with one of the tanks. when the fuel falls below half full it happens that the engine suddenly slows down and does not react anymore to the gas pedal. when i then switch the tank while still driving everything is fine again, I think its probably some debris in this tank.

    If your car has been standing for a long time its not unknown for the transmission to 'leak' fluid. There's a lot of fluid in the torque converter and it slowly leaks down into the transmission where the level rises until it begins to leak from the air vent. You won't see this from a car that is used regularly. Quite common on these old Jags and nothing to worry about. Top it back up and watch the level carefully for a time.

      The biggest difference is you will cut your hands more on one than the other.....................or, if still a little daunting, get a XK8, you will be able to get the cylinder heads off in the same time it takes you to change the plugs and belts on the V12..........just with less pain ;)

      Haha very true! Sometimes I wish my hands were a little smaller to work on V12s

      Don’t have any to try locally, could you tell your opinion if a 195 cm tall guy would somehow fit inside?

      Probably best bet is a XJ6 or XJ12 series 3. They have the highest roofline and most headroom. I’m about 185-187 and i fit fine in them all

    Hi Adam,
    Is this really the oil filter or the fuel filter?

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 года назад

      The filter in the beginning is the fuel filter

      Thought so. How could you get it so free of oil residue 😁
      Btw. You are up very early too. I was just messing up my powersteering rack seal a moment ago and to calm down I watched your video again 😁

      I hope you get your steering rack leak free! And yes I’m always up early haha

      Yes, me too. That seal is already in the garbage. Have to get a whole seal kit just for one Teflon ring, but after rebuilding the whole rack I will not take a chance here. Was my fault or lack of experience with these things. The next time I will install that Teflon-ring AFTER pushing the outer seal in. This is not much more difficult to do but the manual did say to install the ring first. Aren’t we all still learning?
      Btw. where in Sweden do you live ..... my wife was born in Stockholm (Swedish mom, Austrian dad) but we live in Central Germany now.

      Another question: in which video do you show how to get the Cylinderhead of the XK engine off?
      I have the tool to take the V12 heads off but next year I want to upgrade the pistons and rings on my MK2 3.8 and therefore I need to take that head off too.

    Had the same problem, my fingers are crossed that it’s not the pipe from hell that comes over the rear subframe. Which is what happened to mine. 🤨

      I hope so too! I think it’s a rubber hose connection by the tank

    Hi Adam, my friend recently sealed his rusty fuel tank (Holden Commodore - 1980) with POR15 tank sealant. It worked very well and has had no further problems. Just be aware, his research showed that the sealant will not adhere to plastic.

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 года назад +1

      Yes and I think it would still do it. I’ve had it up to just about 100 mph and there was a lot left to give. Nothing beat that acceleration from 60 to 100. It was something

    How many times do you have to say " things don't go as planned", we all know it and don't need to hear it over and over- get on with the story.
