    'More than the older one' There was absolutely no, non consensual, anything in the original. Yes she needed a kiss but she never, ever tried to manipulate or force anything. Everything she did on land was just her having fun being a human and hanging with the guy she had a crush on.

    Ursula isn’t Tritons sister in the original animated film, though she was in the first draft, and there are some left over clues which you can infer that she may still be. In the broadway stage version she calls herself “Auntie Ursula”, so that is probably where the movie got the idea. As for the original original Hans Christian Andersen version, she’s just the sea witch, and has much less of a prominent role if I remember correctly

      @user-lb9xw4xf2q 24 дня назад

      Yeah, in the original version, she isn't inherently evil, rather has magic that causes one to suffer horrible consequences for I guess stakes and to reinforce the tragedy of the plot, since the mermaid doesn't magically lose her voice, her tongue gets cut out and every step on human legs felt like walking on broken glass. And of course the caveat of how she not only doesn't get the prince's love, she turns into sea foam and dies.

      You mean Davros? Yeah, that was dumb. I mean, it made sense to have him walking when it was in an earlier point in his life, before the accidents, but to make it his permanent form? I argue it is more offensive to make him able-bodied, since despite being disabled, he was one of the Doctor's most formidable and dangerous enemies, thus the change implies that Davros couldn't be a threat if still chair-bound.

    It's not that it wasn't okay for her to save herself. It's the FACT that this is a message that is constantly shoved down our dick holes at EVERY remake, reboot and re imagining. As Shiney said, message received stfu and stop changing classic stories to further the message regardless of how subtle one might "think" they are being.
    EDIT:P.S. American's love "Disney's" the little mermaid. Most Disney kids don't have a clue about the source material the animated film came from. We of the states need to recognize that our remaking of other cultures classics isn't what the world thinks of when one mentions a classic folk tale.

      It also doesn't make as much sense. In the original, Aerial kills the eels, which causes Ursula to go after her in a rage. It was only because of that, that the prince was able to get an opening to stab her.

      I can't speak for the Danes, but at least in Norway I don't think we ever touched The Little Mermaid in school and certainly I don't think any parents are reading it to their kids either these days. Everyone knows HC Andersen's name, and the house where he lived is a popular tourist destination for people from all over the Nordics, but I feel like there's ten other fairy tales of his that people are more likely to be familiar with than the original story of The Little Mermaid.
      But as I said, that's just my experience growing up in Norway. Maybe in Denmark they curse Walt Disney's name every night for overshadowing the original, sacred tale.

    • @user-lb9xw4xf2q
      @user-lb9xw4xf2q 24 дня назад

      To jump on your point: I think it is acceptable to change details when making a new adaptation of an older story - after all, the OG Little Mermaid is depressing as shit. However, when it is a company's own catalogue, it's a sort of catch-22 in that if it is the same, it's pointless, and if it is too different in certain areas, it disrespects the first adaptation - thus, ultimately, the best idea would simply be to stop making cynical live-action remakes, but they won't do that because they still make money, and it is objectively less risky to recycle a hit than it is to try something new every time.

  • @SniperSX
    @SniperSX Год назад +8

    It doesn't matter if Ariel saves herself? It's just throws the whole plot down the drain!
    The prince saving Ariel is the whole plot resolution, The girl is insecure because she is a mermaid and the prince is a human, gets in trouble, turns human, gets tricked, turns into mermaid again, prince accepts her as mermaid and saves her either way, the father realizes that humans aren't all bad, it's all about acceptance, now is about what? It's fucking ruined...
    Hey Disney, why bother? Just close shop for real, keep the classics and stop wasting money.

    • @user-lb9xw4xf2q
      @user-lb9xw4xf2q 24 дня назад

      It's also a full circle moment since Ariel saved Eric's life at the beginning, so she is in no way a passive protagonist, therefore making her kill Ursula was redundant for reasons you stated.

  • @udraj914
    @udraj914 Год назад +10

    Yeah, Disney movies are not big in some parts of the world. Most people dont have acces to Disney channel.When I showed the live action trailer to my 10 year old niece, she just said " her hair isnt red". (like literal red, we dont understand what the west call red hair, since we all have black hair) So no, its not about the colour of Ariel. I think it only showed in a select few theatres in the capitol and that was it.
    Also, why call it a live action when you are going to animate half of it (all of it - Lion Kind) anyway?
    About the fact that Ariel stabbing Ursula, yes, we are frustrated of this repeated narrative where the girl has to do "everything" while also looking super good. They left all the character development out of Mulan live action as well. They did the same to Hermione. When you take out the character flaws and make them super humans and expect girls to relate, it defeats the purpose. You want to show that women can be bad asses yet be human, prone to human errors like every other human.

    11:41 that is because we simply didn't grow up watching disney movies. We had our own movies, folk tales and stories that were huge part of our childhood. most of us watched disney movies way later in life so they were not that significant to us. I think this must be case in other asian countries as well. And may be that's why the remakes are not doing that well worldwide because we never had that emotional connection to them anyway.

    • @SniperSX
      @SniperSX Год назад +1

      Nah, the remakes just suck and are pointless. The wannabe writers totally miss the point of the (originals) of the 90's and why people loved them.
      What's the point of everything in the story if Ariel is a girl boss in the end?
      It removes the acceptance of the prince of her mermaid form.
      It removes the hero act of the prince to help the mermaid people.
      It removes the reason why the father accepts humans now.
      It removes the acceptance of Ariel as a mermaid.
      It removes the acceptance of the father for what Ariel wants.
      Also, not true, the original Mulan is great, the new one is crap, for the exact the same shit, they don't get it!

    In film school and from very talented writers and filmmakers, even Disney writers, I was always told that expecting an audience to “suspend disbelief” means the writers and directors aren’t doing a good job. A viewer should not need to stop the film in their head, think about it and say “ I guess that’s ok.” Good storytellers make things make sense within the world they’ve created.

    • @KaleRylan
      @KaleRylan Год назад +3

      suspending disbelief is absolutely part of making fantasy, such as, say, the very existence of magic, but yeah, the key is what's the internal logic? If magic exists, then it's just part of the world, but that doesn't mean there aren't rules (assuming you wrote your magic well). Having a bird talk underwater, but then need to go up for air, doesn't make any sense even within the context of talking animals.

  • @silvertail7131
    @silvertail7131 9 месяцев назад +3

    Yeah, the thing with Ariel saving herself is, on its own, there's nothing wrong with the scene, but it's a notable trend. That and it does rather change the plot within this particular show. The question really is more, why was it done. If it was a... oh, well, we found a plot hole and wanted to patch it... or, oh, we changed this earlier thing, so now this ending made more sense, it would be an artistic choice but, reasonable. When it's done to specifically exclude a character from having any credit for the plot resolution, regardless of what it does to the plot, because the narrative message is deemed more important than the story... it would be worrisome to leave such motivations unchallenged.

They hate it when characters are "white washed" but now it's fine the other way around. I'd go on board with this if they make Moana and Tiana white. Screw this messaging and I'm really glad Hollywood is burning 'cause "The Message" they are trying to shove down everybody's throat is ruining the Movie and TV industry that I love so much.

      Well, your reaction means they succeeded in part of their plan. They don't a fuck about representation, rather they can pretend their cynical remake is somehow noble by swapping ethnicities, and at the same time create a smoke bomb that will aggravate certain people the most, and when those people are the loudest, it becomes easy to dismiss any and all criticism of the movie as "racist." (Just to clarify, I'm not assuming you're racist, rather noting that the racists would be the loudest and thus any similar criticism - even if well-intended - would be clumped in with them)

Oh that’s what it was. They claimed Eric went in for the kiss without her consent. He should have asked first. But honestly if a woman is leaning in to receive said kiss….. THAT is consent.

But no because she doesn't say it then somehow he was kissing her against her will.

    Tbh I don't really care *that* much about that specific scene, but it's just the sheer quantity of these subtle "messages" in every recent movie that is overwhelming, to the point that they put so much effort in changing every little detail of the original story to conform to standards that shouldn't matter, while also not put enough effort in keeping the magic that made it good to begin with. I liked a lot of things about this movie, but that all of them were also present in the original cartoon movie, but all the things I disliked were changes made for the remake. I really do not know why they couldn't do an original story even if they did it about mermaids & had it be an unofficial sequel to the animated one. I realize there is animated sequels but I'm just saying. I really like the cast but It just seems lazy to retell the story when Halle could've had her own character with a story. Set it in the same world fine but do something original with it. Heck there are fairy tales Dis hasn't done (every time I type D's company name youtube blocks or deletes my comments so yeah) some from different cultures that might not be well known to everyone if you can't get an original idea. And there are plenty of very talented song writers and Broadway type musical writers. I was never upset about the casting of the characters, I am however aggravated they couldn't come up with a new character. I'm all ready to have a live action new black "princess" or some other role model for kids to look up to but can we get their own story. I grew up with Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella television movie on abc that had Brandy and a complete mixed cast we even got an Asian-American Prince but back then was before the character had been done to 💀and it didn't seem like a cheap cash grab by the mouse mafia . I would've loved something with that energy but with a new story.

    The central problem of the LA remakes is that they completely miss the point of the originals. So like, whenever do a Cinderella run now, they make her this total girl boss... EXCEPT, the core point of the story OF Cinderella is that you don't need to be all that pro-active, you can just be a good person, and take your shot when the opportunity arises and good things will happen.
    Go over to Mulan, and they make her a Chosen One who is "beloved by the chi" (God I hated that shit) and is just already awesome at everyting all the time. In the OG, she had to work and train, we got to see her earn respect, and to be fighting from the backfoot.
    It feels like they just don't get that there's a REASON these stories were remembered so fondly.

    I worked at a place that was like 90% women. And it was a fancy high-end department store. So, the women there, old and young, were very girly and really into fashion. And whenever there was a heavy box or something that needed to be moved, the women there were more than happy to let a guy carry it for them, even if it wasn't technically our job. And we felt good doing it. There was only one lady there, out of dozens and dozens, who was like "no, I carry my own shit". But largely, as far as I can tell, I don't think women have a problem relying on men like that. They've been told they're weak all their lives, and they believe it, so they don't even try and just don't have that need to prove that they're strong like men do. It's part of our identity as men to be able carry heavy things and be relied on like that. A woman is not going to feel like she's not a woman if she can't carry something. When we feel bad for women for being weak, we're probably projecting how we would feel if we were weak. In fact, women probably think we're idiots for risking an injury because we have this need to prove ourselves, and also because they got us to do something. So, I think the problem with the "damsel in distress" trope isn't that we're portraying women as someone who need saving. It's that we portray them as dumb and useless with 0 survival instincts, and ourselves as brave and capable, while a woman being saved is probably thinking "I am so beautiful and persuasive that I got this fool to risk his life for me". In her head, she's the smart one, and she's probably right.

    While I have nothing against black people, I really enjoyed Black Panther, and several of the favorite actors, are black, I am not a fan of race-swapping, period. If a character is white, then that is what they are. Don't change them to black, or asian, or middle eastern. Keep them white. If you want more black, asian, or middle eastern characters in media, make a new story with those characters. I'll watch it if it's good.

A lot of people don't care about character in terms of who they are as a person, people care about how accurate that character looks to the image they associate the character with. It's not about race, It's about nostalgia and brand recognition. The most recognizable trait of Ariel to most kids that grew up with the cartoon is her very red hair that contrasts with her white skin.

      @@ChrisTheAspergerGuy it's a valid argument if you know how marketing works, especially if your target audience is those same grown-up kids who fell in love with the original cartoon who'd like to bring their own kids. This movie is nothing but a nostalgia trip (otherwise it'd be an original story), except it didn't work because people didn't recognize the same iconic character from their childhood and weren't motivated to watch it.

    • @ChrisTheAspergerGuy
      @ChrisTheAspergerGuy Год назад

      @@bloodymares Dude, I'm one of those kids who grew up with the original. Most of us didn't give a shit about Ariel's race change. I mean we're talking about a fantasy character who's part of a species that doesn't exist in real life. No reasonable person is gonna care about that. The movie being a nostalgia cash grab is mainly why it underperformed, which still would've happened even if they casted a white actress. Granted, I liked the movie, but I get it.

    @BrcRosa Год назад +1

    The movie was idiotic. They made a bunch of changes that made no sense to the story or to the characters.
    The story didn't follow any logical chronological sense. Things just happened.
    Ursula and Triton were not siblings in '89. The creators talked about it but didnt follow thru because it added nothing to the story. It added nothing to the story in '23 just more idiotic plot holes.
    Electric eels are fresh water fish. Just like the ghost crab they modeled Sebastian after can't live under the sea.
    Flotsam and Jetsam were Moray eels not electric and the thought that electric eels could disintegrate the ruler of the sea in a moment is ridiculous.
    Triton needed to be alive during the battle to see that Eric wasn't a savage monster. He needed to see that he loved Ariel and was willing to sacrifice himself for her.
    In '89 it was Tritons prejudice that Ariel was battling against. In '23 they open the Fing movie with the sailors gleefully trying to murder a mermaid so that she doesn't use her siren song to lure them all to their deaths.
    The Queen, who grounds her little boy cause he's not a grown man, even rants about how they are at war with the sea. She is disgusted when Ariel is shown to be a mermaid.
    Everyone confirms that the sea and land don't belong together after Ursula is defeated. Absolutely nothing changes in the story to change anyones minds. Except one day they all just decide to forget all of their understandable fear and hatred.
    We have been actively killing each other, or blaming our deaths on one another. But now its a Tuesday so its fine.

You gotta leave well enough alone !! This Texas boy of Mexican decent says the cartoon version IS the version !!!!

I saw it with my nephews and it just wasn't as good as Aladdin or Beauty and The Beast AT ALL! In Acting or Production Value. Sure Her Singing was good but so was Jasmine's.

    I hate Awkwafina with a passion. She may just be the most annoying person alive. This movie did nothing to change my mind about that.
    Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda is awesome. Vivian is absolutely right to call him genius. Hamilton is one of the greatest works of art of the 21st century. It's so densely packed with allusion and wordplay that it's downright Shakespearian. And the songs are still very catchy, even with all that. I have no opinion on his Disney stuff because I'm not into Disney.

    I did watch if the Ariels acting/singing disappoints to but she did great, I hate when a Skript destroys an Actors career. I´m just too scared from Star Wars, poor Ani, young mainly.
    I do thing why the cast to black cause it does have the side taste of woke culture, the bad kind, but I wont watch because someone´s Skin tone she had a great voice, and all her VA in different languages. Mine (German) or French and Japanese was and always are pretty powerful
