I love this so much! I have this exact dresser and wanted to change my room up, but I don't want to buy new furniture so this taught me so much!! Can't wait to do the same to my dresser
I have been searching for an answer if I can strip IKEA furniture because I wanted to make them all white washed stain, and this video has given me hope! Thank you for doing it and sharing it!
Wow! That looks incredible! Great job. Very beachy looking which is what I'm wanting. I wish ikea made this is natural wood! They make the Tarva dresser in natural wood but it's never in stock, the quality isn't as high, and it isn't as large as this one. I love!!
I have it in the medium brown. I did the frame in white and left the front wood. I gel stain coated them just to darken the red a bit. I love the two tone look.
I just bought a used Hemnes TV console. It’s black/brown, but I am planning to strip it and whitewash the raw pine. Thanks for giving me a preview of what the wood looks like, and what I will be getting myself into. Great job!
Hey girl, this looks great! Just a tip the lower the number on your sandpaper the rougher it is and the faster it strips your finish. 240 is a fine grit and is designed to smooth out the surface before you stain or paint it. Something like a 60 grit would've stripped that paint and previous finish quickly. But overall you did great! Keep doing you!
@@Saidastiles I am in love with this look!!! this is my first time seeing your channel and I really love the way you show your real process, including the bloopers
@@ffta2esper No, Using stripper makes sense if you are doing a piece with veneer as it is quite thin and you don't want to sand through it, however if you know it is solid wood and you just want to get through the old finish quickly you can just use 60 grit sandpaper, just make sure you then work your way up through the grits, i.e 60, 80, 100, 180, 240 to ensure you get it nice and smooth without any scratches or swirls the heavier grits can produce
So glad I found your video!! Love the hemnes range and I have serval articles from it and been debating how to refinish them. Your video has just made me fall in love with the raw beauty of the wood!! Thank you so much!!!
i want to strip the paint off my ikea hemnes furniture so bad, i want to reveal the raw wood and just stain it a nice walnut. currently have a set of the bed frame/drawer/nightstand in black and i want them all to match.
Omgosh I LOOOOOVE this! I have the same dresser but in black and I want to sand it down to be able to stain the bare wood. I’m so excited to see that it turned out!!
You’re a trooper! You didn’t give up good job. Some tips as you learned stain is applied with a rag apply as needed as you go and wipe good. Always wear protective gear stripping chemicals have a strong odor and may be harmful is breathed for long periods in a non ventilated area. Also furniture is stripped only if it’s worth the time and money bc as you learned stripping furniture is extremely time consuming and tedious. Therefore, for a piece like this unless you really truly love it, it’s not recommended. For those wanting to do this just buy a similar version at ikea (they do have them) with no color and then stain, they can turn out very beautiful. -Madeira Refined 🤍
Looks great. Nice to know what this stain looks like. I just bought some. 😂 I didn’t know this dresser was actually real wood. I thought it was a composite. Wonder why they don’t sell an unfinished version. 🤔
true ! Their Tarva line is unfinished pine wood (but very limited!) - but I am always left wondering why IKEA does not sell more unfinished versions of their furniture line of products - the cheap lacquer / varnish they put on some of their Hemnes bookcases for example, that is just ugly, when you compare with a richer wood colour that you can stain to your liking. I wish they did offer more 'natural wood' options ...
@@tanyabelleau8874 I was wondering the same thing! Plus it saves ikea time and money of not having to paint their products. The demand is there, I wish they would listen to their customers.
Oh my gosh, are we the same person lol? I repainted my black hemnes dressers an offwhite after trying originally trying to take all the black off and giving up. This gives me hope I can actually refinish it how I originally intended. The dresser turned out beautifully!
Lovely work, doll! It turned out so beautiful!! I own the dresser and the night stands in the same color and have been looking for a tutorial to show me how to strip the paint. You explained everything so well that I’m looking forward to doing the same with mine!! Thank you
I have a hemnes white dresser and I'm stripping it right now. Its really hard for the paint to come off the front of dresser like the paint is different from the other parts of the dresser ugh. Maybe i just need a rougher grit after i remove the stripper stuff.
Saida, that was an epic effort. You must have been losing the will at times but it paid off in the end, looks brilliant. You have inspired me to strip a smaller chest of drawers that won't require anywhere near as much effort and can be done by sanding the wax off. Drawer one now stripped (handles were a bitch to remove) and I'm liking how it's looking.
OKAY so this made dumb of me but I just redid our same dresser from ikea in january I have a video on my channel and now i like this better!!! Im seriously considering redoing it!! lol It looks amazing!

It's beautiful! Im attempting this right now, and i totally get when you said maybe i should stop and just paint it. Your video inspired me to keep going.
I‘ve done the same thing with our dresser and I must say 2 things: 1. it doesn’t have dark spots from paint like yours, so you might have to sand it more properly, and 2. though the dresser is now looking beyond beautiful, I truly regret doing this hell of a job and it’s a pity people promote all this ikea makeover stuff. Next time I‘d rather save my highly paid time and just buy one from a high quality furniture retailer. This is my personal choice, other people should feel free doing what they want.
I respect that. At this time I bought it used for $40 I couldn’t afford anything that I actually liked so I’m still happy that I did it. I still use it to this day. I’m sorry you find it a pity, I think like you said at the end we all should do what we want to do and no one is forced to follow anyone’s advice 😊 thanks for watching
If you had applied paint stripper to the original dark brown color of the dresser and then sanded it, would it have made the process go faster? Thinking about doing this with a white hemnes dresser which might be easier compared to the dark color.
I've seen people with the white stain version just go straight to sanding and then conditioning, staining, and sealing! No paint stripper needed for those versions
It looks so much better with no paint, I hope Ikea offers this option at some point. Using paint strippers and doing so much sanding isn't really an option if you're living in a small apartment without a basement or garden...
How many sand papers did it take you to sand the entire dresser plus drawers? I’ve just started today the paint stripper, and I don’t know why I thought it would be practically wood coloured after it but by the looks of your video I have to sand it to see the wood entirely. I’m going to buy sand paper but it’d be great to know what amount I should buy. I have the same dresser but almost black. I didn’t think it would be this hard and this long...😬😂

NICE WORK! I have the black dresser. Do I still need the paint stripper to get it off or will the sandpaper alone be enough? Also, I really actually liked the drawers naked with the white dresser left alone! Farmhouse vibes lol
