      This looks to be simply wide angle, not fisheye. It produces distortion but not quite as bad as fisheye. Either way, all you have to do is catch a frame where the horizon runs directly through the centerpoint of the frame. Any curvature seen then is actual curvature. Very simple. Oh, and there is definitely curvature.

    too many things to ask you:
    1) what was the size of baloon and what gas did you use ( hellium or Hydrogen)
    2) was the communication between the baloon and the app on your cellphone stable . How were they communicating ( i am assuming with cellphone signals)
    3) did you use portable charger onbord to charge your GoPro
    4) how did you recover your GoPro if it landed far far away from you. Were you able to tell where it landed exactly using your GPS tracker
    5) last question but very important: Do you need to get permission from the authorities before you do this. The baloon can interfere with airplanes pathes.
    Thank you in advance.

    • @sivrot
      @sivrot  8 лет назад +35

      yaya2006 i used a 600g balloon with helium. we only had communication with the balloon when it had cell coverage (under 3000 meters with the gps tracker). we logged however the intire flight with a cellphone, thats why we got the altitude and position. yes we used a portable charger, so it had 100% battery even when we found it. we got excact locations where the balloon was anytime when it was under 3000 meters. we called the number to the sim inside the gps tracker, and got coordinates with a link to google maps as a response.
      i think you need permission ig you're gonna do it "by the book". but where i live its not much airplane traffic overhead. and even though the chance of it hitting was miniscule, we kept an eye on the app "flightradar 24 pro". we did this to make sure we wouldnt launch if there for some reason was more traffic than usual overhead.
      sorry for not responding before now! didnt see your comment until today. :)

    If anyone is wondering why the earth doesn't look very curved, here is why, using simple mathematics which are taught in high school. To make it understandable we will use a soccer ball as comparison. Question one: how high would this balloon fly if the earth was the size of a soccer ball with a diameter of 23 cm? Answer: just 5,99 millimeter! How to calculate:
    1) 109000 feet is 33.2232 kilometer (= 3322320 centimeter)
    2) The earth is 12742 km (1274200000 cm) in diameter, a soccer ball 23 cm. So the ball is 1274200000 / 23 = 55400000 times smaller than the earth
    3) If we compress the earth to the size of a soccer ball we should divide by 55400000. So we should divide the height of the camera as well: 3322320 cm / 55400000 cm = 0,0599 cm = 5,99 millimeter
    So take a GoPro and hold it 6 millimeter above a soccer ball. What do you see? Well you can try this by yourself or we calculate an estimate.
    To calculate this we need trigonometry. Imagine a triangle with one 90 degree angle. If we know one other angle and a distance we can calculate the others. We will need two calculations where we know the angle, and the adjacent side of the triangle. If you don't know what I mean, look at revisionmaths.com/gcse-maths-revision/trigonometry/sin-cos-and-tan . At that page you'll find the calculation which we can use to calculate the length of the opposite side: tan(angle) = (length opposite side / lenght adjacent side). So the length of the opposite side = tan(angle) * length adjacent side. We need this calculation twice: first to calculate the distance after tilting vertically, then to calculate how much horizon is in view horizontally.
    So question two is: how far away do we look if we tilt the camera vertically down so the horizon is in the center. We need the distance on the ground from the point on earth directly below the camera to the point where the center of the camera is pointed at. Given the camera center is pointed 30 degrees down (estimate how much you need to tilt the camera to center the earth), and we are 0,059969675 cm above the ball, you'll see only 0,1037 cm of the soccer ball. To calculate this for yourself: tan(90-30) * 0,059969675.
    Okay now we know how far away the horizon is it's time for question number 3: how much of the horizon would we see at this distance? The Hero 3 GoPro lens in N mode has a horizontal field of view of 64,6 degrees. To create a triangle on which we can use trigonometry we have to divide the FOV by two. After the trigonometry calculation we multiply by two to get the complete horizon. So tan(64,6/2) * 0,10374984 * 2 = 0,13112 cm. Which is 13 millimeter.
    So if this camera was flying above an earth the size of a soccer ball, the camera would only show 13 millimeter horizon. Now ask yourself: how much does a soccer ball curve in 13 millimeter? The answer is: almost nothing. Now stretch those 13 millimeter to your entire computer screen, as that 13 millimeter takes up the entire view. How much curve would you see now? Next to nothing. So that's why you can hardly see a curve at this video.
    Even the ISS doesn't see a massive curve, although it's clearly visible. The ISS flies at 408 kilometer altitude. If you do the same calculations the ISS would only see 1,61 centimeter of horizon on a soccer ball, for this specific camera type.
    I would say that if we would see a massive curve at this low altitude we would have a major problem: given the dimensions the earth shouldn't curve that much.

    • @madison8035
      @madison8035 9 лет назад +15

      Well let's think... If it's launched at night, would you be able to see the sun, the differentiation in the atmospheres , and the clouds, along with the continents and water? No.... That's why it's launched in the day. If it was at night, you'd be basically wasting a balloon and helium, you'd get nothing but blackness.

    Camera always point right (not down or up). At this altitude we would see only blank space, but horizon is still there. On round earth this is impossible. It's so simple to understand.
    You can even test it in some 3D program to see how it will looks like if earth is round.
    Only if camera looks down than we would see horizon.

    It’s cool how the balloon pops past a specific altitude. Better balloons can go higher but way too expensive tho. Reason it pops is because the atmosphere gets soooo light that the gasses in the balloon start expanding and stretches the balloon to it breaking point. Oxygen and water have a lot in common when you think about it. Both are fluids, both can support life, both can change atmosphere level that cause your ears to pop. The force that keeps oceans to the earth is the same force that holds oxygen on the earth.

      Use your eyes. The video clearly uses a fish eye lens.
      Fisheye distortion makes an object appear convex above the centerpoint, and concave below it. If a straight line is at the centerpoint, it will remain straight. If the top of a curved line is at the centerpoint, it remains curved. The horizon remains convex at the centerpoint. It's still a sphere.

    At an altitude of 109,000ft. your line of sight to Horizon is 404 miles = 5.8 degrees of curvature.
