I'm buying a first time "nice knife" for my son and was looking for a flipper button lock and you made that decision much easier. Thank you for your insight!
Wayne thanks for the honest real talk about these knives. Listening to others one would think all knives are perfect. I appreciate your honest warts and all reviews, especially because you like all these knives. I would like to see more info on how you fix or adjust the imperfections you do find. By the way, I also have the Knife Center Exclusive CRJB Pyrite. It's awesome! I use it for "dress up" duties. It looks like a premium knife. Your assessment is right on.
I got into collecting knives back in 2021. The first button lock knife I bought was a CRKT BT Fighter. I then bought a Tighe Tac Two (which I have since sold). Some time in August or September, I decided to check out the newer button locks. I first bought a Conspirator (which is still my favorite), a Sentinel Strike, a Chevalier, a Sencut Wattauga, a QSP Swordfish and just got delivery of a second Conspirator the other day (11/28/2023). Tells you how much I love that model. I think I overdid it.
I've got most of the button lock knives that have came out so far as many are affordable. Besides Protech button locks, I think the CJRB pyrite has the best action. Some of the kizer button locks make a really satisfying noise when you deploy them.
I just picked up the Pyrite and man oh man, what a knife! I wish it had a flipper tab! Such a great knife though. I have the kizer hic-cup too. pretty good but the detent is a little stiff.
I love civivi's Nitro V steel. I thinks its a super underrated steel. Its great for the price. Holds a decent edge and is super beginner friendly to sharpen
Really like that Cormorant, with that mean hollow grind! I wouldn't have been disappointed if they left the front flipper off, as I think the other two forms of deployment are a lot faster, IMO.
The amount of these that didn’t have the option for a left handed clip placement was astounding, I would’ve probably bought most of these if not for that one specific hang-up. Also the Conspirator should for sure be tier one!
Isn't the button on the wrong side for a left-handed user anyway? I'm left-handed and I haven't really considered buying a button lock for that reason. I'm disappointed with how few knives of any design have reversible pocket clips as well. Maybe I should search for a video ranking left-hand friendly pocket knives.
@@Mark-xv9qi I'm left handed but primarily use a knife in my right hand, but I whole heartedly get it. My lament? Not more tip down options. Now hold on before you laugh or mock me hahaha, it's more ergonomically efficient to how I most often use a pocket knife- (Knife in back right pocket, tip down, blade facing in) Reach down and pinch grip with thumb and middle finger. Slide it out of my pocket while pulling my hand forward. Knife falls into hand, forefinger flips blade. Make whatever cuts. Close blade(changes with locking mechanism). Hand goes to pocket while my middle finger works the clip and the knife slides out of my hand into the pocket. Done. Sorry about the lengthy reasoning why I prefer it, but I've been given endless(good natured) ribbing about it over the years. 🤘🏼✌🏽
I share your frustration. Button locks are fantastic for lefties because it’s possibly even easier to manipulate the button with your index finger than your thumb. Why oh why is the pocket clip on the KnifeCenter exclusive version of the Pyrite not reversible? It is infuriating!
Wow!!! I got my Kizer Cormarant , same as yours with the 20cv and frag titanium for around $130. I was shocked when you stated they were $180. I must have gotten one that was sold for the wrong price. Can’t complain about that , guess I got lucky!!
I love my mini sheepdog, thumbhole only (no flipper) in micarta and 154cm black stonewash blade… the new option you showed here with thumbhole + button lock is tempting to add
I love my Conspirator however can’t argue with your gripes tier 1 to me but you ain’t wrong either! Wanted the Knife Center Pyrite but no lefty clip unfortunately same with mini sheepdog.
I had the exact same problem with the Kaiser begleiter as you did. I took it apart and cleaned it then put it back together and it's a little better but it's not perfect. Really surprised to get a knife like this from Kaiser!!!
Unfortunately the company is owned by a bigot so no one buys their shit anymore. Tough to see him double down and rapidly lose credibility, but glad to see the community reject xenophobic nonsense.

Love my CJRB Pyrite in regular g10. At first, I found the detent to be too light. But after fidgeting with it, I realized it made it so easy for reverse flicking. Although a great EDC size, wish they also made an XL version.
I got the Pyrite in all black because it was what was in stock the fastest. I absolutely love it but am tempted to get a plain steel one as well. It’s just such a delight.
Good choice for #1. Was not expecting that until I saw the Mordax. Protech knocks it out of the park. Been eyeballing the Malibu for quite some time. I would like the wharncliffe Blade one though. I do have to say I think the Conspirator sould have been in the tier One. 🙂

Hey glad to see my ole Feldspar button lock made the list 😆 and Is this a fact about Larren Thomas supervising the heat treatment at ProTech? If so, that's freaking awesome 😂 makes my Magnacut Mordax that much better lol.
I’m not sure exactly which Civivi button lock you’re talking about, but in general Civivi has done an excellent job with them. My favorites so far are the Cogent, Altus and Conspirator.
Server: "Are you ready to order?" Wayne: "I'm bad at decisions, and a case can be made for any of them. So, I've separated the dishes into tiers..." :-P (Great vid, though. Thanks for uploading. Cheers!)
The xl asassin and xl beg r kickass . Asassin had to break in but for only one deployment it’s up there for sure , orion solaris 👍. And kizer has the ti clips now so they all got them and it makes ergos even better imo .
Larrin Thomas came up with the original composition of MagnaCut, so he’s the creator of it for all intents and purposes. Crucible helped make his dream come true, of course, but it wouldn’t be possible without him. On my end, I now have most of the BLs you had here, but still missing out on the Protechs. I’m craving for one for a while now lol. I’d take either, Mordax or Malibu. Or both haha
I can’t decide between kizer assassin and the kizer original? Out of those two which would you pick. My only button lock is the conspirator and I love it
I have the begleiter 2 and XL and I would put the XL in tier 3. In my opinion (at least with mine) the detent isn't strong enough for a great action with the flipper tab. The Begleiter 2 (at least mine) I'd say is at least a tier 2 maybe even a low tier 1. I do like the action on the assassin xl a little bit better.
I got a Beglieter xl that was a lemon 154cm steel which is a steel I like but Idk? I must-have gotten a bad heat treat bc it just doesn't sharpen up all that well
@@poseidons_636 I got the large one, the mini was sold out. I also have big hands and like a blade long enough to cut a sandwich in half without getting the pivot dirty
Looking a recommendation on a button lock. I have had and returned the Cormorant and Conspiritor. My problems with them were lackluster action, button stick or effort required and finally the irritating to me “tunk” sound on deployment. The “tunk” to me sounds like plastic tubes being hit together. Maybe there isn’t one that fits my criteria.
Last year I went from zero button locks in my collection to 15 (17 if you count my two automatics). I have several of the knives in your video and pretty much agree with your assessments. What is missing from your list are my two best button locks - the WE Mini Malice and the WE Culex. The Culex has a perfect detent and is an excellent knife. The Mini Malice is also fantastic. I would be hard pressed to pick one over the other but would probably give the edge to the Mini Malice due to better ergos. I love my button locks and will no doubt buy more.
Probably because the Conspirator and Chevalier are one in the same knife when it comes down to it. And the Conspirator will always be favored because the Chevalier resembles a penis more or less.
I don't own any button lock knives myself. Is the button only for closing them, or do you need the button to open them as well? I'm looking for a flipper, possibly an assisted flipper, that won't open without pressing the button. Any recommendations would be welcome, especially in the 3.5" to 5" blade length.
No you don’t need the button to open them. You can press the button and flick it out but there’s also some other form of deployment such as a flipper or thumbstuds
Conspirator should be in tier 1, I have green micarta/black blade. It has no button stick, gets extremely sharp, has extended jimping on the spine, the ergos are very good and it sounds great. I also put the black Civivi milled Ti clip on it. I had a Pyrite and the centering was off because the scales weren't straight. Garbage.
I’ve had 3 Pyrites now and all have had great centering. I’m actually in the middle of getting a different Conspirator that may change my opinion. Might make a video about it when it’s done.
They’re actually almost the exact same, but the Malibu is wider so it sits and feels a tad better in the pocket. However when compared with the Malibu, they’re both very very similar.

At BladeHQ, for instance, which you linked to in the description, they basically have none in stock other than the ultrapremium one for multi thousands of dollars.
Yea… turns out they’re still selling like crazy! DLT had a pretty big shipment of like 6 different versions and they’re all gone already! Craziness! I just checked around and can’t really find anything either now. I swore I saw some here and there.
They didn’t inset the liners like the original t1 but it’s still ok . Oh my bad it’s a Gemini so there’s hope to see a t1 button lock…with inset liners
I know I'm in a massive minority here, but for(and how) I use a pocket knife 90 ish% of the time, I really prefer tip down and I wish there were more options. But I digress... Thanks for the vid, bud. 🤘🏼✌🏽

@@WaynesSharpWorld I appreciate your reply all the same!
