Hey JJ, just thought you’d think this story was cool. Hawaii, before we were annexed, was actually a significant merchant state since we’re in the middle of the Pacific. The British gave a British ensign to King Kamehameha I and he flew it over his residence before it caused tension with America. Later during the war of 1812, Kamehameha flew an American style flag over his home to show solidarity and avoid conflict with America before the British protested in his court. In order to avoid this, he created a hybrid of the two, with a mixture of red, white, and blue stripes symbolizing the nine islands of Hawaii, and a Union Jack in the corner. Hawaii is actually the only US state to have a Union Jack on its flag.
@@carrotjuice2354 yep That is the standard Battle Flag of the army of Northern Virginia. while the actual Confederate flag actually went through three revisions. The first being the stars and bars which looked very similar to the United States flag. The stainless Banner being the second. Which looks like a giant piece flag but with the Confederate battle standard of Robert E Lee in the upper left. And then the finally the blood-stained banner which took the second flag and dyed red on the far right. That is the actual Confederate flag. Ironically the reason why everybody knows the army of Northern Virginia's battle standard as the Confederate flag because during the 50s and twenties, the KKK was using that standard as their symbolic flag and parade it around as if it was the actual Confederate flag. That is why people now associate the battle standard with the ideas of racism. Because racist idiots would not respect Robert e Lee's request on only using his battle standard for a historical way. AK in museums, reenactments, and used to honor those who have died during the Civil War only not to be used in any other fashion.

The PO wmia flag has a different meaning it's actually symbol of honoring our troops so it's not really about honoring the Vietnam War and it's honoring those who died for our nation because p o w m i a means prisoner of war missing and action
Growing up, I went to pow wows and other various Indian events, and saw the POW MIA flag flown there multiple times, it stuck out to me because it has a neat design, also my mom works at government building for natives basically, and I legitimately thought this flag was for natives, ever since I just saw this video. Going to a college full of natives and seeing this flag made sense, but now I learn it's just a weird military flag and it no longer excites me anymore. Smh, I really thought natives got a cool flag of sorts.
Please before you post things you should check your facts. Your statements concerning the Vietnam war being started by the Republicans is wrong. Combat troops were first sent to Vietnam by Lyndon Banes Johnson a Democrat after he falsely claimed a US ship was attacked by the North Vietnamese (see Gulf of Tonkin Incident). you also seem to have confused several state flags, proposed flags and battle flags as US national flags.
Fun fact about the Gadsden or 'snake steppy' flag, is there are several iterations of it, one modeled after an illustration of many states making up segments of the snake, the yellow one and a red and white striped version where the snake seems to be climbing them like stairs. This last has the most official use of them all. Shortly after the 9/11/2001 attacks, the US Navy designated it the new naval jack, a small flag flown from a ship to signal nationality, but usually different from the national flag flown from the highest mast. It's technically a Gadsden, but officially just the naval jack. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2b/Naval_jack_of_the_United_States_%282002%E2%80%932019%29.svg/1200px-Naval_jack_of_the_United_States_%282002%E2%80%932019%29.svg.png The naval jack it replaced (perma-temporarily?) was just the star field of the normal US flag.
There’s also the navy’s “don’t give up the ship” flag that is well liked among navy people and Great Lakes residents (especially people from south bass island in Ohio) One of my other favorite early flags was the chopped up snake comic representing the colonies

Btw Your Channel is great and you should totally do a video on Oregon🌲
Here's a tragic story: I was actually IN Oregon working on a video about the state when my grandmother started dying. So I had to immediately rush back home so I could see here before she passed away. So I sort of have a half-fished scrap of an Oregon video.

Love his RUclips channel so much 💕
Accurate. POW/MIA and the thin-blue-line flags are probably some of the most common flags i see aside from the American flag.
Those thin blue line flags are disgraceful.
Ayy, another flag video. I always enjoy these
Thanks for introducing some of the cultural Icons of New England, the second oldest British American colony. The Vermont Republic was independent for 12 years under that "Green Mountain Boys Flag". The white flag with pine tree is still "in use," without the words, as the official Massachusetts naval ensign [though the navy disappeared a long time ago].
Shout out o skillshare for sponsoring jj
Skillshare is great!
I never heard of the person he mentioned.
"If you look closely, you'll see plenty of news personalities wearing this flag pin."
If you buy one flag pin, do you really need to buy another flag pin?
Ahh JJ flag videos.....
The Green Mountain Boys Flag is still the official flag of the Vermont National Guard and that’s still their nickname too
Just something cool I thought I’d bring up since the Vermont National Guard has taken that flag with them to every war they’ve fought in including the War of 1812, The Civil War, The Spanish American War, Both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and The War on Terror

Black green and red flag I would say definitely caught on in America. You saw it all over the 2020 protests in Seattle especially in the time period it became in autonomous zone
maybe not an american thing in general, but there are a lot of different region specific foods around the US that you can't even find in other states, or even other cities in the same state

The dixie flag (what most people call confederate flag) is actually a flag for honoring confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War. The actual confederate flag looks kinda like an American flag

As I said before multiple times, if I look at the POW/Mia flag at night and then look out the window, the flag appears to be against the night sky. And my family has the only flagpool in my Feild of view, which we don't even use. That scares me!
Flag: You are not forgotten
J.J. McCullough: It is kind of a relic from a sort of *forgotten* political fight-
Oof. I remember that, until a short while ago, when I was younger, I never understood the point or the symbolism of the POW MIA flag.

The "DON'T TREAD ON ME" Flag is called the Gadsden Flag

That is not the Confederate flag in the beginning lol
it isnt??
@@carrotjuice2354 yep
That is the standard Battle Flag of the army of Northern Virginia. while the actual Confederate flag actually went through three revisions.

Yeah!
Another one is the “Come and Take it” flag from the Texas Revolution which represents not only defending 2A rights but also represents standing up to oppressive governments which is what America is truly founded on and giving rights to the ppl. It also goes hand in hand with the “Don’t tread on me” flag which is called the Gadsden Flag

I also find it hilarious how Americans will be all like "it's against the law to modify the flag" and then they modify the flag to promote their racism

I mean, y'all got some pretty cool flags and symbols, like the Medicine Wheel of the Lakota, amongst other things.
It is a Joy to hear you casually say "About". . . Great content as well!
It's technically a Gadsden, but officially just the naval jack.
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2b/Naval_jack_of_the_United_States_%282002%E2%80%932019%29.svg/1200px-Naval_jack_of_the_United_States_%282002%E2%80%932019%29.svg.png
The naval jack it replaced (perma-temporarily?) was just the star field of the normal US flag.
Quite ironic, as the amount of treading the US got up to ramped up significantly after 9/11.
