I'm from Florida and I've literally never heard of anyone thinking the flag has to do with the CSA. Everyone here accepts it as symbolising our centuries of Spanish roots, Spanish named cities, and large Spanish speaking population :)

Interesting, as a Texan living in Alabama that’s the first thing I see with the nearly identical Alabama flag. I guess it’s truly just whatever the individual person sees. I do totally get the Spanish heritage part.

Why on Earth was the Texas flag shown as Controversial? It has remained unchanged since 1839 as the flag of the Republic of Texas so predates by 21 years anything Confederate related.
The Republic of Texas declared independence from Mexico over slavery amongst other issues so it doesn't really help they did it twice.
I don't think the Texas one is offensive at all, the only offensive flag to me is Mississippi. It's not completely terrible, but I mean, c'mon, there's no good excuse for the prominent Confederate flag on the state flag.

@@hyperion3145 well let me educate you because you are mistaken. If you grew up in Texas you would know because we're taking entire full year of Texas State history in school. Texas fought for the constitution of 1824 and was not the only Mexican state trying to succeed at the time over the oppressive dictatorship of Santa Anna. The other two rebellions failed however. Also the lose of political autonomy when the states of Coahuila and Texas were combined given Texas only one seat in the new state legislature which riled up the Tejanos who are the Mexican-born residents of Texas. They played a major role in the revolution. When Santa Anna overthrow the Federal Government Texans initially revolted to fight against the coup and for the rightful elected government.
As for Slavery it was outlawed in 1829 and the revolution occurred in 1835-1836. Please refrain from slandering the Lone Star State and its Flag in yhe future.

Someone described the majority of state/territorial flags as SOS (seals on a sheet). It unfortunately aptly describes Kansas’ flag.
Until 1960, it only had the State Seal without the state name. I think our state’s flag would be less busy sans the state name.
I was always taught the cross on the Florida cross represents the Spanish flag, It never once crossed my mind that it was a reference to the confederacy.

JJ, I lived in Florida from 1971 to 2000, and you have left out an important aspect of the history of Florida's flag. The flag originally adopted in 1868 consisted of the State seal on a white background. There was concern that, from a distance, it appeared to be a flag of surrender. So, in 1900, the design was changed to insert the Cross of St. Andrew, as it added color to the flag.
I lived in Alabama. The flag never once crossed our minds that it represents the Confederate symbol. It's more of a tribute to the Spanish roots of the state.
Here's our state's official description of our flag: "Crimson St. Andrew's saltire in a field of white". You are correct about the Spanish roots. Southern Alabama was under Spanish rule briefly, and it influenced us greatly.
I thought it represented the universal symbol for "No, absolutely not, under no circumstances".

I read the statement that the govt made. They basically said the confederate flag was included only for racist reasons and that it’s existence on the Mississippi state flag did not represent the values of a civilized society.
I think it’s a little stupid to get offended over Alabama and Florida, just because they use the same cross, that’s like saying Scotland’s flag is linked to the confederacy.
Exactly! As someone who lives in Alabama, and goes to Florida enough to call it a second home, I can confirm I have never met a single person here offended by our flags. Floridians are actually quite proud of the history of their flag. Most people in Alabama don't really care, it's just there. I am from a part of Alabama very close to Florida, my area was literally part of Spanish Florida at one point. (And British west florida). So I appreciate my state's flag more than most.

As an Arkansan and flag buff, I am somewhat surprised at how little I hear the flag controversy discussed. I think this is probably because the actual meaning of the stars is pretty obscure, and usually only other flag buffs know about it. The minimalist reform you were talking about was proposed in the legislature in the last session, but it didn't get anywhere. If I had to guess, I would say that the same proposal will pass next session and that Asa will sign it (especially since in Arkansas the legislature only needs a simple majority in both Houses to overturn a veto). I would say one thing about the current flag design that would give it the most popular support is actually the diamond. Arkansas being the only state with an active diamond mine is actually a big source of state pride and identity. We have pictures of diamonds on our license plates and state quarter, and it is officially the state gemstone. One thing not connected to the Confederacy I hope they change though is that we have our state's name written on the flag. No flag should have writing on it!
Also: I'm a huge fan of Atun-Shei Films. It blew my mind when I heard his voice in your video!

As a Floridian I have to say since we have over years drifted away from the confederacy and closer to Spanish colonialism(Thanks to our large Hispanic population), I’m pretty sure it’s based on Spain rather than the confederates.
It is, both the Floridian and the Alabama flags are based on the flag of the Spanish empire, which was that diagonal cross for a period
Florida Native here. I was always taught in school about the Spanish influence on the State i.e. being originally claimed by Ponce De Leon as a Spanish settlement, or St Augustine being the oldest settlement in the America. For me, I do not view the State flag as having a connection to the confederacy, but I can understand why people may see it as controversial.
Hey JJ, I was just going to add that the Saltire flags of Alabama and Florida are in the style of St Andrew’s flag due to the design of the cross. But both flags, especially the Alabama flag are more in line with the Cross of St Patrick due to the Red Cross and white background. Cheers!

Almost all of America's state flags are terrible and confusing (if not worse). You can hardly tell the difference.

I had no idea the Georgia flag was a Confederate flag until my dad and I visited Fort Sumter, and he pointed out one of their flags was basically our flag. I was shocked, mainly because I always associated the stars and bars as the only Confederate flag.

Florida is not a Confederate flag. It comes from the Spanish naval ensign. Florida was originally Spanish before entering the US.

I agree, some of the better designed flags in this country are in the Southern and Southwest states. Simple and distinguishable, unlike most flags up in northern or midwest states with their basic seal on blue background.
Knowing that my state flag, Texas, is recognizable to even non-Americans is something I take an odd sense of pride in.
Actually the Hapsburg rule of America was really liberal with native Americans and outlawed enslaving them. The thing of Spanish supremacy over America started with the Bourbons who centralised the government towards to the Iberian interests over the rest of the empire's one, something that eventually led to Latin-American nationalism and independence

Interesting, cause here in Brasil, more specific in the city of Americana, in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, they often have Southern celabrations with that flag. The city, of course, was found by exiled confedered soldiers in the middle of the 19 century. To more on that, i recomend Masaman's vídeo on this subject.

That's because the St Patrick Cross in the Union Flag/Jack was originally meant to symbolise Ireland as a whole, but since now only Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland has its own, different flag, it has come to symbolise just Northern Ireland instead.

To be precise, they took off the arrows so the flag wouldn’t get too busy with the stars inside the cross. Without the stars inside the cross, Alabama can just redesign their flag to the real St. Andrew’s cross in honor of the position of Spanish as the second language of the United States.

Florida did confirm that it was inspired by the Burgundian Cross because Florida is proud of their Spanish heritage. There is circumstantial evidence that the Alabama flag is based on a Confederate flag carried by troops from that state as it is referenced in the design committee's notes, but there is nothing that outright says it is.

Revert Revertz there is no official spec version of the Magnolia Flag. All the historical examples of Magnolia Flags have major design variations simply because of vague language in the original 1861 flag bill.
Hopefully though you are not thinking of the awful UCV flag which was made possibly decades after, and only had a thin red stripe on the fly. (And has no historical precedent)
Like I said before though, there are quite a few varieties to choose from already.

Luke Porras The thin red stripe on the fly is actually a reference to what’s called “the Blood-Stained Banner,” one of the Confederacy’s flags adopted towards the end of the war.
I don't live in a state with a controversial flag, but I live in a country with one. The Australian flag has been questioned more times than I can count, but no one can think of a better one to replace it with. It seems New Zealand has the same probably but at least they actually tried with their referendum. Our politicians don't even go near it because it's just too difficult to deal with.

I live in Pennsylvania's state capitol. You don't have to drive far -- in any direction into the rural areas around the city -- to discover someone flying the Confederate battle flag. Which is remarkable, because, um, Gettysburg. And the fact that Pennsylvania was a Union state. I don't recall it being this way 30 years ago. Definitely seems like a more recent phenomenon.
I know a year is a very short amount of time, but it has been a pretty eventful year in terms of Confederate imagery.

Infamous abomination is an understatement of the 2001 Georgia Flag. I remember people likening it to a Denny's placemat.
It was disgusting. I personally don't like the 1956 flag as it was too garish, but I'm sure most people would have taken it over the ugly Barnes' flag. The 2003 flag is much nicer, and combines Confederate symbolism without it being in your face, so it appeases everyone.

Being a hispanic that currently is in Florida, I don't think that the flag is particularly pretty, but it would be pretty cool to keep the roots of the Spanish rule, more because of the increasing Spanish speaking people in the state. I know some Floridians with latino roots like that the state started very similar to the countries a lot of them came from, making Florida some sort of "Latin American Country"
we could make it even more spanish, why not change it to the burgundian cross with the cool notches instead of one with straight lines? we could even make it orange or orange and green cause of florida agriculture. the current one has always felt just too confederate for me, not something that really brings a lot of pride to me as a floridian.

I think we have to keep some southern heritage, though. It’s important to remember our roots as a southern state. We can still do that without being excessively “confederate”.
I'm always confused why people leave a place for somewhere they prefer, but still wish it was more like the place they left. Why leave in the first place then?

@@lngvly22 I grew up in North Carolina and I have to say there is more to the South than just the Confederacy. People who think they need that Civil War crap to be southern have no idea what being southern actually is.
I was born and raised in Alaska, and we cherish our flag. I currently live in Florida, and I still identify myself as an Alaskan, who is a Florida resident. I fully intend on moving back to the Last Frontier as soon as I can. Little side note, Alaska has the best state song and flag, you can't change my mind!

@@thedigitalodometer945 nah, Alaska is enveloped by the deep blue night sky more than any other state by far, also the emptiness of space makes it feel colder as well, which is a very Alaskan thing. Flag represents the state very well. Plus the Alaskan night sky is always something tourist enjoy a lot, we do have the aurora borealis but I think that would be too complex for flag design. The simplicity of the flag really does match the simplicity of the state.

Your flag is really one of the better ones. I dare say it is probably a better design than my Texan one, and yes I know that is heresy. It is ironic too considering how opposed Ohio had once been to the vary notion of a state flag; considered it unpatriotic to the country as a whole. Now if only we could get about a third of the rest of the county to take some inspiration. I think it would be cool if at the minimum each state that currently any writing or plain symbol must START with making a tailed flag.

Not really his idea fully. RUclips has been demonetizing videos with controversial flags and if you depend on RUclips revenue for a living, demonitization is something you really want to avoid.

Aloha JJ! I think we ought to talk abut Hawaii’s state flag. It’s got the Union Jack in the corner, and the story on the street is that when Cook showed up, King Kamehameha took a liking to the design because he thought it “looked cool”. These days most non-native Hawaiian people sort of ignore the unusual presence of British symbolism, and we don’t think about it much, but the native Hawaiian people despise it. In Alabama, it never really occurred to me that the flag could be possibly related to the confederacy. Or Spain. I thought it was more reminiscent of Scotland and England.

I agree. I grew up in Alabama and the only description of the state flag I was ever taught was " Cross of St. Andrew on a field of white." Growing up I never heard it compared to the Confederate flag. As far as flag pride in Alabama (such as display), I remember it being almost non-existent. Well not anything like Chicago where I live now. That gorgeous Chicago flag is plastered and marketed on just about everything up here, which makes it really kind of cool.
I believe Northern Ireland has a similar flag (although there many versions of it)
I’m from Tennessee and apparently there’s now people saying we need to get rid of our tri-star flag. Honestly it’s kind of surprising since its main meaning is to represent East, Middle, and Western Tennessee.

As Western nations we can choose which parts of our history to honour with flags and statues, while still remembering all of it. That's a luxury some nations don't have, where their governments choose what's remembered and enforce their own symbols. China comes to mind, as does Japan.
Phillip Porter Removing symbols immediately after a regime falls is different. In the West there’s this weird focus on getting rid of any problematic symbol, even if it has existed for centuries. A better (but extreme) non-western example would be the Cultural Revolution in China.

I think Tennessee has one of the best US flags, it’s simple and it’s references are subtle enough to actually have meaning without being offensive. It shows they know their past without being too proud of it. Also it looks like something out of Strangereal

I never thought of the Florida flag as offensive or associated with the confederates, just really saw it as symbolism of both Spanish and Native history (as the flag upon closer look features a painting of a native American on it) kinda like a origin story of our state presented in 1 flag. I am from Arkansas, and the general design of the flag is beloved by people of all races. The shape of Arkansas's flag is based on the presence of diamonds in the state. Full stop. I think there is significant consensus towards removing one of the four stars.
But if you put two Arkansas flags next to each other, what do you see? That's hardly a coincidence.

I just look at the flag as a symbol of pride for my state, not what is behind it. The Mississippi flag on the other hand should be changed, there is no need for that.

The Alabama state flag also looks like the Cross of Saint Patrick flag, a red X cross on a white background and is older than the state of Alabama. Were the British Flags gets its red cross from Though there is no known connection to the Cross of Saint Patrick flag and the Alabama flag. The red X cross is not known as a Saint Andrews cross but a Saint Patrick's Cross. It is controversial because it is a later connection to Saint Patrick. There is plenty of info on You Tube and the rest of the Internet about the Saint Patrick's cross and the Saint Patrick's cross flag for those that are interested in those topics!
The British flag is the cross of st George, cross of st Andrew and cross of st Patrick, (st Patrick was born in Britain and stolen by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland).

Also I know to Scottish You Tubers, Shaun and Wee Scottish Lass, both have great You Tube channels, Think the Alabama flag looks like if someone mixed the English and Scottish flags. That would be too confusing. the Saint Andrews cross doesn't have a color except on the Scottish and British flag . Although there is a version of the British flag were the flag is white with a red Saint Georges cross and a Blue Saint Andrew's cross on top. An Unofficial Scottish version though. The cross of Saint Patrick is always red and it is on all flags that have it. So if you see a red X cross used in Ireland or the UK on a flag then it isn't a Saint Andrew's cross but a Saint Patrick's cross; as is the green flag that has a red Saint Patrick's cross and the red Ulster hand on it. That flag is used by some people in Northern Ireland. There is also a yellow flag with a red Saint Patrick's cross on it also used in Northern Ireland by some people.
St Andrew was crucified on a sideways cross, so that’s what the term refers to. It’s just a generic term for a shape.

South Carolina’s flag design all hails from the Revolution, the crescent on the Carolina militia’s hat, the palmetto fort that basically repelled cannon balls because of the spongy wood and the indigo from South Carolina used to make blue dye for the Carolina militia, why would they need to change it in the first place?

As a Mississippi native I can tell you that our now former flag has been controversial my whole life. My school never flew it, my town didn't either. My Dad said that at Ole Miss in the 70s the pre game parties would have you think the south won. I'm surprised that flag is getting the boot in my lifetime.

@@parchment543 as for other states no idea, but for Mississippi we are seeing a dramatic shift in attitude with the millennial & gen zers. Our state has a lot of problems that the republican state government either 1. Doesn't address or 2. Thinks is tolerable. By their apathy the younger generations want change. Either the young leave & continue the brain drain or they stay to help reform. The likelihood of Confederate symbolism staying would probably be concentrated the most rural areas of the state. Last time I checked we have the highest number of interracial marriages so the sympathies to the confederacy is dying off by proxy.
That doesn't make sense. How did she explain the South won when its whole point of existing was to preserve slavery and maintain their cotton monoploy all of which they lost. Hey as an Arkansan no one really thinks about the civil war implications and a lot more people think of it for its official explanation because in northeast Arkansas I've never even heard it compared to the CSA flag so the plausible deniability IMO is pretty strong

As a citizen of Florida, my curriculum specifically covered how the flag was designed to honor the Spanish and Seminole history of the land. How much of that is revisionist history who knows. But it is how it is treated today

They are and aren't. At least from my view, I'm not from either state so I'm not going to speak as if I am. It seems both can say they were inspired from Spanish rule, with Florida having more of a stake in that argument due to the obvious and very well know Spanish rule in Florida. While it's also true Alabama had Spanish rule the cross could seem to be more inspired by the Confederacy. It's a tuff thing for me to view as there is no stated meaning. I could see them being taken down just because everything else is. Part of me sees why people don't like them but the other part definitely sees that they shouldn't be taken down and the Confederate sybolism isn't actually there. So yeah sorry for this random paragraph that didn't even state a hard oppion.

I'm from Florida and I've been in Florida my entire life. The state flag has largely always been seen as representing the Spanish Empire, and is easily related to the old Spanish flag (which is still flown over the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine). The vast majority of Floridians have always understood this to be the case, and still largely see it that way. I live in the Panhandle, which is obviously more traditionally southern in culture and tends to be majority Republican/Conservative, though there are several Panhandle counties which are currently majority Democrat. As far as the state flag's popularity in my part of the state, I'd say it's mildly popular just as a representation of where we live and call home. There does not appear to be any confederate sentiment tied to it from residents' perspective. Trust me, those wishing to express confederate sentiment will simply wave the CSA battle flag and skip the state flag entirely. I'm southern to the core and I love my home in the Panhandle, and yes Florida was a part of the confederacy, though history shows that Florida never did play a huge role in it, having most of its key ports immediately seized by Union forces from the start, and only a few minor battles/skirmishes were fought here. It's part of our history and I believe that every bit of our history, good and bad, should be taught and remembered, though not necessarily glorified. As for flying confederate flags, to quote Indiana Jones, "it belongs in a museum!" It is my opinion that there is no reason to alter or replace the state flag of Florida because (though it's obvious to everyone that the Cross of St. Andrew inspired both the state flag and the confederate battle flag) Floridians overwhelmingly see it as representing our ties to the Spanish Empire and is by and large not controversial to Floridians. Heck, even the name "Florida" is Spanish.

Yeah, exactly, not only that but Spanish Florida was quite literally the safe haven for both black slaves and natives against the British and French. They literally created their own settlements and helped the Spanish fight against them.
