Sure you can have rules about not smoking everywhere in public, but I don’t see a problem if they are adults at home. We let people sign up to go to war at 18, how can cigarettes really be that much worse. We have birthday cake vodka, and alcohol that comes with novelty items, why can’t we have birthday cake cigarettes and “silks”? If you are worried about children seeing them then require they only he sold in tobacco stores, like liquor is only sold in liquor stores where I live. Make it require you to be 18 to enter, like weed dispensaries in legal states require you to be 21 to even enter (should be 18 if you ask me but whatever better than it being illegal) don’t just ban it. I doubt most people who smoke do so for little goodies anyway, when I started smoking I did it because I thought it would feel good, and it did, that’s what draws most smokers. My first cigarette tasted awful, but did that stop me? No I smoked for like 7 years before I quit.
Izaya Orihara just educate children honestly about the risks of smoking and they won’t do it. That’s the best defense against smoking. Don’t just fear monger either, be purely fact based. Give them enough evidence to choose on their own to not smoke when they get older. Some will smoke anyway but that’s human nature, drugs have always been with humans and always will be, nothing you can do about it except try to reduce harm, in that light we could point people to safer alternatives to cigarettes. But prohibition itself doesn’t work, Australia is having a mess from its soft prohibition through extreme taxes, black market tobacco is growing, illegal tobacco is more dangerous than regular tobacco and is easier to access by teenagers.
At 8:27 that flag is not a flag used to represent earth, but was rather used by the company, " American Export Lines ". They were an American shipping line from 1919, to 1977. They used this flag in the 60s.
I always enjoy these videos because I know at some point I’m going to learn something new and indeed I did. I learned there’s a flag for climate change, that there’s a former earth novelty flag, and about things sold with cigarettes to encourage consumers to purchase them (kinda like Cracker Jack still does). I have vegan friends so was aware of that flag. I think I’m going to start pronouncing it like you as that actually makes logical sense: vegan comes from vegetarian which comes from vegetable and the first “e” in the latter two are not pronounced as a long “e” sound, yet the word vegan gets pronounced with a long “e” sound. I’m quite lucky that my vegan friends aren’t so in your face about it, but I have heard them complain about such vegans they themselves have encountered. Great video!
The caduceus was associated with Hermes, the Greek god of roads, and travellers and the messenger of the gods. However, there was another staff which had one snake instead of two. This staff was used by Asclepius, son of Apollo, and god of Medicine. At some point they got mixed up and thus, the Caduceus standing for medicine
About the Finnish flag: as far as I can find, the Grand Duchy of Finland didn't have an official flag. As a result, when Finland took part in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics with their own team separate from Russia, Finnish athletes still used the Russian flag when competing. That being said, there were some unofficial flags which were used in different situations, which usually included the Russian flag in some form. The lion flag you showed in this video was actually used briefly as the national flag in early days of independence, before the current flag was officially adopted. The flag is basically the Finnish coat of arms turned into a flag. The lion itself is based on a similar design from 16th century Sweden. A version of the lion standing on three legs was used as the coat of arms of Finland during Russian rule and was even included in the Russian coat of arms during that time. As a side note, versions of the current blue cross flag were first used by yacht clubs during the 1860's.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 the red and yellow cross flag is the unofficial flag for Finland's Swedish speaking minority. A similar flag is also used for the Swedish region of Scania

The last case is funny and relatable for anybody who's introverted or has social anxiety. Imagine being obsessively curious about the provenance of a stranger's flag at the beach but too shy or introverted to just approach them and ask even though they're literally 15 feet away, instead preferring to take the mystery that, again, you could have an answer to in ten seconds to a stranger in Canada and his legion of internet fans instead to figure out over a much longer period of time.
2:00 don't know about the Finnish one but the Polish flag is yes a puppet state of Russia's. The flag was used after the second partition of Poland and the Duchy Of Warsaw was a Russian puppet state until after WW1.
Naval sign of Kingdom of Poland (other, better known flags are also naval which could be a hint). Duchy of Warsaw was a Napoleonic puppet state. Kingdom of Poland (aka Congress Poland after Vienna Congress) created from it in personal union with Russia by WW1 was almost completely integrated. Dating this is complicated since Congress Poland didn't have sea access or, after 1831, armed forces. Grand Duchy of Finland, OTOH, only got separate army after 1878, not even sure about a navy.

@J.J. McCullough The game is far too infectious to simply be forgotten. You. Will. Remember. Edit: You just lost for the third time today JJ, I’m honestly disappointed...
I also used to mispronounce it that way. This is perhaps because someone from Las Vegas is a Las Vegan or alternately a Vegan. Also pertaining to the star Vega. That's how I assumed it based on reading. Of course there is a joke how do you know if someone is a vegan don't worry they'll tell you. But if you do you would know how it is pronounced. I also think this is not a joke that resonates with me well because occasionally meet vegans who talk a lot about it, but for the most part I'm more likely to meet someone who is vocally reactionary to vegans, and I find in my life vegans are usually discrete. but it pretty much is vegan with an eeeeee sound. But Vegan is a another word that comes from a different word system. that being said it is sometimes quite surprising to me how wrong JJ mispronounces words. I say that because I don't mind people mispronouncing things I probably do it a bunch. But I also feel like I tend to learn a lot of new words by listening. So in that case spelling is harder for me than pronouncing since the novel aspects I don't know is getting the spelling from the sound instead of the sound from the spelling.
I'm in the area...I don't think I've heard anyone pronounce it like that in a long time. But he pronounces a lot of things weird, seemingly on purpose.
@@Melissa-L yeah it almost seems intentional. for someone who is fastidious in video making as JJ seems to be, it doesn't seem like it'd be that much harder to find a clip of someone saying certain words and matching that. but i mean, i like the JJ style
It's how its pronounced in Portuguese, well I mean it's how it's read in Portuguese, how the actual letters form into sounds, now if you're talking to a person who consumers English language media they could pronounce it like they heard it there, that's very common. There are 3 gradients of phonology/Alphabet. On the top is Chinese (Hanzi), Words are just Drawings, no sound is really fixed, Mandarin and Cantonese can sometimes be unable to understand each other in spoken language at all, but they're saying the exact same words, written in the exact same alphabet, this also extends into Japanese and previously Korean and Vietnamese, which while speaking different languages with different origins often use the same "Words" (Chinese Characters, sometimes modified.) Then comes English, which I think is very unique in that regard. English just imports whole words from other languages Willy-Nilly, and has been doing so since the Norman Invasion, Importing BOTH the writing and radicals of every word, and very often the sounds too (see ruclips.net/video/EqLiRu34kWo/видео.html), that means it's basically like Chinese in that every word could be said in a different way but... NOT. Well, every syllable, every set of letters, CAN be said in multiple ways, but when they form a full word, that word is set (even if there might be homonyms) and generally standardised, even among different dialects, say, Jamaican and Australian English, so they end up still mostly understandable, and have a strong point of reference, usually British English, from which to path the variation from. So it's kind of like Chinese, but the dialects are not as old or as separate to be completely unintelligible, and due to a small Alphabet (26 letters and several diacritics VS Tens of Thousands of Chinese Characters), less likely to promote effective communication once they are actually separate.. And last there's Romance languages, with lots of emphasis on conformity of sound and grammar, since the Roman Empire started forcing their subjects to abandon their languages, and administering all of Western Europe under one law code. Romance languages have regularly underwent revision to eliminate silent letters, unify different sounds into one letter and sometimes even codify Grammar in Spelling and Spelling in Grammar, sometimes completely obscuring the roots even of Greek and Latin words in the process. Recently with the advent of instant communication and new words being coined and popularised very fast this process has been greatly weakened, resulting in an "Engish-ization" of Latin languages, both in the sense of directly adopting english words into the language, and of adopting the cosmopolitan, english, approach to spelling, a particularly poignant example being people who spell "Wikipedia" the american way in brazil, even though Wikipedia itself latinised their name to Wikipédia, as to be pronounceable like Enciclopédia. I don't really know how Arabic fits into all of this.
You have very charming personality jj , it's really fun to watch your videos even if it's sth I don't particularly care about , like flags . But you just make it too fun to watch. Love from india .,🇮🇳

Nah I’d just buy the packets and collect the silks without smoking
2:51 Found it. The flag of "Poland" was the *NAVAL ENSIGN* of Congress Poland.
9:00 i mean it's pretty obvious.
Its the flag of the Rhythm Nation.

: "People! We must find out what this flag means no matter what!"
Finland did unofficially use red and yellow cross flag at one point as well.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 the red and yellow cross flag is the unofficial flag for Finland's Swedish speaking minority. A similar flag is also used for the Swedish region of Scania
(9:20) Ah, E for earth, the most universal name.
Not like every language has its own word for earth.
Oh, damn! I wasn't expecting to hear Spruce Grove, Alberta in this video. :) I live in Edmonton, Alberta, very nearby! Love your videos. You've learned a TON about flags! It never seems to end.
11:28 Yeah, that was my first impulse as well. It seemed like it was maybe one of those sexual and gender identity flags. Cool video!
Thanks 𝒥𝒥 for another Interesting video, The E on the simple globe is a logo I originally used on my business cards, as an ESL/EFL teacher working overseas. On my second batch of cards I replaced it with ESL on a more oblate spheroid. Whenever I spotted one of the many language schools or travel agencies with a similar logo I modified it or changed it completely.
Finally, how long as it been sconce the last one,

Luke Toussaint ah you Are correct my mistake
Delaware, not NJ
@@mattswaggy7804 it did actually go into parts of south west new jersey. The whole colony sort of stradled what is now the border between Deleware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
I just got randomly suggested your channel and wow im hooked on these flag videos! Awesome research man!!!!! Earned my sub

Hey JJ, I’m a real big fan of your content. I feel like a good video idea would be the most famous/stereotypical music piece to come out of different countries around the world. Seems right up your alley
That’s a good idea! The only problem is youtube makes it impossible to make music based videos
J.J. McCullough man that sucks. Whatever, I’m sure I’ll like whatever you’ve got in the pipes right now. Keep up the good work!
If nothing positive at all ever comes of this Covid 19 mess, at least we can thank it for JJ’s hair!
This is the series that made me subscribe. So happy to have it back!

A quite new flag-based mystery to me is what kind of Finland based quilt JJ has on top of his laptop (and why)
It’s just a towel my friend got me when he went there

If it wasn’t next to the American flag I would say it could be the flag of Boca Juniors , the most famous football team here in Argentina
Found this weird flag in rural australia, it was a pink background with a golden parachute, 3 marks above it and an eagle in the top right corner. It was seemingly military based but I couldn't find info on it.
the Poland flag at 2:10 is actually the flag of when Poland and Russia were in a personal union
Can we all just appreciate that the flag at 7:49 is a flag, which contains a flag, which contains 3 flags, one of which contains another flag?

You should make a video about parliament buildings and seat arrangements in different legislatures around the world. I think that'd be an interesting topic and I'd love to see you explain it!
I'm surprised I made it this early to a J.J. video. And it's a flag video!
"But the one on the far right is a mystery to me". Truer words have never been spoken.
Hi JJ, you just lost the game.
The game’s rules are pretty simple:
1) If you think about the game you lose the game.
2) The only way to win the game is to never discover the game.
3)The game only ends when the queen of England publicly acknowledges the game .
By reading this comment, you thought about the game. Thus, you lose.
Edit: Great video as usual!

I’ve never heard “vegan” pronounced that way. Is it just you who does that or do other people in your area as well?
On the top is Chinese (Hanzi), Words are just Drawings, no sound is really fixed, Mandarin and Cantonese can sometimes be unable to understand each other in spoken language at all, but they're saying the exact same words, written in the exact same alphabet, this also extends into Japanese and previously Korean and Vietnamese, which while speaking different languages with different origins often use the same "Words" (Chinese Characters, sometimes modified.)
Then comes English, which I think is very unique in that regard.
At 8:23, yeah that's just the "Captain Planet" logo with an "E" inside of it. Makes sense that it is used as a generic "Earth" flag for kids.

The "finland" flag is an adapted version of the original finnish customs flag. In fact official finnish customs logo is still the two crossed caduceus on a blue backround.

"I know most of their flags." And thus, Quebec rushes to make a new flag, just to stick it to JJ...and also to be "progressive."
There's this wikipedia list called "list of flags by color combination" that helps a lot in such cases. Traces most semi-popular cities, movemements, etc.
5:29 Caduceus is actually not the symbol of medice. The actual symbol for medicine is the Rod of Asclepius, which has only one snake going around it. It is a common misconception.

@@JJMcCullough Very common. If you google "medicine symbols" you get more Caduceus than the Rod.
@@Majnik_ "Caduceus is actually not the symbol of medice."
If it's used to symbolize medicine, it is a symbol of medicine (though not *the* symbol of medicine as there are others as well).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus_as_a_symbol_of_medicine
@@seneca983 You are right, I wanted to say, that despite it being used often as a symbol of medicine, the official symbolism of Caduceus is not medicine.
J.J. McCullough They are correct it’s 1 snake not two. Across Europe that’s the sign to look for in all countries along the bowl seen in the link. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_of_Hygieia
The caduceus used in the context of trade is correct, as that is the symbol of Mercury (God of Commerce, Trade and Messaging). The medical field should use the caduceus with one snake, as that is the symbol for the Rod of Asclepius (Asclepius being the God of Medicine)

@@JJMcCullough That would really suit you. We need a channel like that for Canada or anything. I think that if you had a TV show like that - you should include your segment where you review souvenirs from the country - it would be sacrilege without it (JK). 1) The very obscure fringe parties of Canada or the fringe parties of the U.S (so many)
2) More mysterious flag videos (I loved that series)
3) Explaining the capital cities of each province (I've only been to Vancouver, very beautiful city)
4) Ranking all Prime Ministers of Canada by any means like accomplishments, or what they are known for
5) Making a history video of your channel
6) A video where you react or share some funny comments
7) Crazy stories which have occurred to you in or out of Canada
8) What Canadian stereotypes are true and not true (I'm Canadian but barely)
9) What to know or what to do if visiting Vancouver or just any city in Canada
10) Rating Canadian city flags (I know there are some really good ones, like Toronto, and some bad ones like Halifax)
11) Rating international flags
12) Giving your opinions or thoughts on people from each province of Canada, or even territory (I had a neighbor from the Yukon for a month oddly enough - even though I live in California)
