      On the edge of York at Grimston Bar it's two lanes at the roundabout, the left lane used to be for the A166 only (I'm going back a few years before they changed it) and the right lane was for the A1079. The number of idiots that used to come down the left lane and try and squeeze across in front of traffic in the right lane was ridiculous, it's a wonder we never saw any accidents there. One day a guy came to the depot to complain a bus wouldn't let him in when he was trying to do exactly that, when we pointed out the lane markings his response was "they are advisory only"
      There's a lot of idiots on the road.
      Incidentally I saw someone scrape a 70 reg Peugeot against a boulder the other day when he was trying to squeeze through a gap that wasn't there

      Many years ago I had a car deliberately knock into me on my motorbike because I passed him 'on the inside' on a roundabout and 'everyone knows you shouldn't pass on the inside'. The only thing was that 'the inside' was on his right, literally the lane nearest the centre of the island, which is of course, perfectly legal and ordinarily safe in the absence of psychosis. Some people are not only too stupid to understand concepts but then use their misunderstanding as _casus belli._

      She’s correct actually - you give way to cars coming from the right that are already on the roundabout. But that’s irrelevant in this situation because she was coming from the same entrance (not already on the roundabout) and going the wrong direction for her lane. The fact she said this is scary - perhaps she thought the car she hit actually came from another entrance which is even worse because it shows she has absolutely no awareness

      And also that according to the Highway Code, you’re supposed to remove all snow from your car that could fall off into the path of other road users. A lot of people seem to miss this and not want to put the effort in. In terms of the cycle lane, it's hard to tell with camera FOV but to have a cycle lane and what becomes two lanes of traffic, that all looks pretty tight. If I was a cyclist approaching this double roundabout I would probably dismount and walk around rather than enter that fluster cluck on wheels, but that's a personal choice. Yes, the camer should maybe be more aware of cycle lanes, but this particular layout looks pretty dangerous for everyone. With folks regularly diving down the inside I would probably absent mindedly be trying to avoid my wing mirror being swiped by another car rather than think of bicycles.
    In terms of adjusting to the VW when it doesn't turn, it would be pretty hard to see this and correct in enough time. Trying to keep your eyes open and give way, predicting traffic flow on a double mini roundabout is hard enough without someone just diving up the inside and hoping you disappear. That's before you factor in the low sun and poor visibility etc. I probably would have struggled to notice the SUV given everything else that is happening.
    SUV is ultimately completely at fault for having no idea how to read road markings and navigate a roundabout. If they really thought they had right of way then that's outright scary, they need points and a driving refresher course of some kind.

      Indicators are weirdly an advisory, they're not compulsory. You can't rely on an indication or take it for granted, you have to wait until the potential hazard in front of you has cleared before proceeding. Someone else put it as 'you are responsible for the vehicle in front of you'

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 3 года назад +3

      You don't have to use indicators when exiting a mini roundabout, or going straight. Bigger roundabouts with lanes also don't require them. Anyone already on the roundabout has priority so if you've been in near misses, you need to learn to assess the situation more appropriately before pulling out. There's more to look at than a flashing light. Tyre direction, speed, road position. It's something that takes time to learn but it's your responsibility to do so, especially if you're putting yourself in front of cars already on a roundabout and causing them danger.

      It’s probably taking so long as the SUV driver likely lied. Many years ago ( my first accident) I was hit head on. I was in my lane/side of road and the car came round the bend on the wrong side of the road (my side). I had managed to come to a complete stop before she hit me. Lucky it was a very slow impact. But for some reason I lost and was found at fault!!!! I had only been driving just over a year. By chance I found out that she had completely lied so I informed my insurance and they just said tough she is deemed to be more experienced (as was in her 40’s and been driving 20 years) and you’re inexperienced 🤬. She also let slip to me that she was recovering from another car accident and this was going through court and apparently could hardly move but was able to drive, jump out and run round her car bending down and looking it over. Also from a friend at the time she has done similar to his dad a couple years before. I actually don’t know if she made a claim against me or whether I just wasn’t aware of it? If you "care" for the safety and convenience of you and other road users you will clear snow off the roof and bonnet. Several reasons for this. 1.Bonnet, so snow/ice aren't constantly peppering your screen once moving at speed. 2.Roof, so it doesn't spray off on to following vehicles or slide down and take out your wipers under braking. 3.Patches of recently jettisoned snow and ice don't add to the already hazardous journeys of cyclists and motorcyclists.

      I find it extremely unlikely the police would attend such a trivial collision to report such an incident.
      The police are also widely reported as being uninterested in dash cam footage unless it a was a serious incident. So likely this stupid driver will likely remain belligerent and continue driving in exactly the same way.
      I'm frankly surprised this isn't a blackspot for minor collisions, it likely gets like that every rush hour morning, and in a 2 minute clip we saw three vehicles do it... If that's typical, there's 90 cars an hour that cut ahead out of that lane. Even if what happened in this clip is a 0.1% (1:1000) chance that's 26 accidents a year caused by a pathetic road layout.
      The insurers in all cases must surely have tried to implicate the council before now... problem roads and junctions like this need reporting, and dealing with. While it's easy to blame the twat headed drivers in each case, the road layout is enabling it, while the poor traffic flow encourages it.

It’s still ongoing and it’s been two months. There’s a lot of people that don’t know how to use a roundabout even when the lanes are clearly marked.

    This mini-roundabout is very familiar to me, as I grew up nearby. What's also familiar sadly is the self-entitled behaviour of the German SUV driver (who probably had the car on a lease), evident in their blatant misuse of the right-turn-only lane because queuing is fit only for people in "lesser cars"...

  • @salamander5703
    @salamander5703 2 года назад

    I have come across many mini roundabouts where drivers don't follow highway code rules and priorities, especially at rush hour, when it may speed up traffic through the junction. Like queuing in the bike lane in this clip to make it easier to have two lanes of cars at the junction. You just have to be very alert when not familiar with those new "rules".

      I think it’s also to do with how minor the accident therefor the damage will be, it’s low down on the priority list, I had someone reverse into my car early last year outside my house and the insurance took over 5 months to deal with it, March this year I had an old man pull out on me on a junction that cut across a dual carriageway that wrote my car off and it only took his insurance 10 days from the day of the accident to fully payout to me.

      He may have been aware of it but I would say it would have been very difficult in the time involved to have discerned that the VW had not turned left - and by then there was nothing he could have done about it anyway. Her decision to violate the lane markings caused that collision and she should be the one sanctioned.

    yes I agree it seems like one of those junctions where people are regularly diving down the chevrons, through the narrow gap at the bollards where the cycle lane finsihes and then barging their way onto the roundabouts to try to go straight-on. I think Ashley's point about keeping out of the cycle lane can be a really positive bit of defencing driving that could actually prevent this sort of collision by forcing the impatient drivers to hold back. Did you also notice how, after the impact, the SUV driver zoomed past the cammer to go and park up. They didn't even have the sense to let the cammer move off first! Also, I'm wondering if the SUV was trying to turn right at the second roundabout (as at teh point of impact they were straddling the roundabout) which would have still put them in the wrong..

    Very instructive video.
    Hindsight is 20-20. Camera car driver could have checked offside mirror and seen the VW SUV doing the overtake.
    Also it looked to me like the camera car driver didn't follow the contours of the roundabout but cut straight across. So even if the SUV had been turning right, the camera car didn't leave room. Before taking a straight line through a curved hazard, one needs to check for potential conflicts with other vehicles.
    Good spot re the cycle lane, I didn't see that until you pointed it out.

    I was involved in a small collision just like this 5 years ago. The car that collided with me was in a right only lane approaching a roundabout and I was in the left lane to go straight ahead, which was clearly marked on the road. As we both entered the roundabout the driver of the car on the right didn’t look in his mirror and swung left taking my wheel arch off and rupturing my tyre. The guy argued with me for about 15 minutes that I shouldn’t have been there, to which I got fed up with and after taking his details I sat in my car until he left so I could go about getting my car recovered.
    The claim was dragged for about 18 months to and from each party then out of nowhere my then insurers (Tesco) just gave in and settled 50/50. After this I swore I would never drive a vehicle that didn’t have a dash cam and I would never ever use any insurer underwritten by the same company for any insurance ever again. I was told by Tesco insurance complaints team that this type of collision is so common they just settle at the earliest opportunity usually, no matter how many witnesses and / or pictures you send in.

    I'm happy with the cam-car in this clip. All the drama caused by the SUV.
    Two points to add, which I didn't hear Ashely mention:
    I think on approach to that first mini-roundabout, it would seem that it is 'standard practice' for cars in the left lane to keep tighter to the kerb to allow anyone genuinely turning right to pass alongside and make progress. So, in this instance, our cam-car is also being a courteous driver as no cyclists where impeded.
    Secondly, by going ahead from the right-turn lane on the first mini, the SUV ends up aligned in such a position on the second mini, to either just drive straight over it (like they ended up having to), or having to steer excessively to at least makes some sort of effort to drive around it (like you should).
    Yup, the more I see of it, the worse it gets for the SUV...

    This is why I have a dashcam - it's saved me from many a tricky situation to explain. For example, in one situation a taxi driver reversed into my wife while she was stationary. With no other information, she would have been at fault - with the dashcam, no debate is possible. In another situation, I was rear-ended on a 2 lane divided A road, with 4 cars in the chain, I was at the front. The car behind me claimed no damage and drove off, the driver at the back claimed only 2 cars were involved. The insurance company started their dispute process which I cut short with the dashcam footage. Would never drive without a dashcam anymore, make sure it is front and back.

Lady in the lane to our left was going straight over and went STRAIGHT over cutting deeply into the inside lane, we mounted the roundabout even trying to move away from her and she still hit us. Then when she got out she was all 'Where did you come from?!' we were sat next to her for a good 10 seconds before entering the roundabout she had such poor awareness she hadn't even noticed.

    I'm a learner-driver. To me, the VW SUV driver was in the wrong for going into the right-turn-only lane but then going straight on, and for apparently not understanding how priority on roundabouts works. The driver with the camera made three errors: driving in the cycle lane; not spotting that the silver saloon ahead had move onto the roundabout; and not driving cautiously enough given the potentially dazzling sunlight and the blind spot created by the van in front of him as it took the exit.
