I really think SCV implemented the trombones perfectly into their show. Having them only for certain spots in which they enhanced the music really added to the big moments of the show. I think this is a good model of how to properly use trombones in a DCI show without overloading the show with them.
i see where your coming from but as a trombone player i like seeing as much trombone as possible. like just think, a dci corps... but only trombones. that would be sick as crap
I'm a trombonist, I have to say, they aren't the best for marching with, but the fact that they are rare in DCI makes moments like this so much more impactful. You get a sound that you just can't produce on a baritone.
Nicholas Brister I know, I love the glorified slide whistles when they sound great oh the orgasms. And the way they blend with each other it just makes it louder with the overtones
Devin D. I was sitting close to the left 25 yard line and the way their first hit filled up the stadium even all the way over there is a moment I'll never forget as long as I live.
Gentry Walker I got to see their show from the front sideline this year when they went on after us on the 4th of July. I was watching the pit and the impact just came out of nowhere. It's hard to compare videos to being only a few yards away.
i appreciate the openness with which the colorguard had gleamed through air with silk so dramatically ridden with shine, it is still cleaning my spirit and enriching my breathe with elements of nature and freedom that are still possible .. the trombone feature provides an articulated buzz-vibration which also invigorates my energy with a capacity for flight and causal inhibition
Chills... every time. To the people who still think the trombone sounds too harsh to be in DCI 1) You clearly know nothing about music 2) This is your evidence and 3) Your argument is invalid
Who could dare dislike this? Even if you don't like the music you need to appreciate the volume of the impacts. Just because your speakers blow doesn't mean you should dislike a video!
That hit at the beginning with the trombones though. Damn. The people watching that live must not have had much flesh left on their faces after that hit. They were peeling paint like no other!
love it........I programmed this segment into my alarm clock to wake me up in the morning............it sure makes me up at the trombone/contra beginning hit.
If I'm not mistaken, the new rule is that all brass instruments may be used, however, instruments that are not the original four (trumpet, mellophone, marching baritone/euphonium, and contra) may only be used during a hold and non bell-front instruments (french horn, concert baritone/euphonium, concert tuba, etc...) must be mic'd. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...
Can someone explain?? It looks like scv used all their euphonium section for this plus more? It looks like they used some of their mellophones on trombone or something cuz that’s a lot of trombones. It might just be me. Im probably wrong but that’s what it really looks liek
No, you're right. I don't personally know who played what, but if you care to look carefully after they put down the trombones and pick up their regular instruments you can see it is quite the mix.
@@BrianJohnsonCubing I looked again and you're correct. I'm not sure why I would have thought otherwise when I looked the first time. Perhaps I was thinking that was too many people for a single line, but corps sizes have increased a bit over the years. Thanks for pointing this out.
Sorry guys, but I miss them G bugles. I am an ex band director and you sound like a band. No disrespect, you sound gorgeous, but I can tell the difference!
It's okay to miss them. DCI only "sounds like a band" because they are playing the same instruments you might find in a high school marching band. As time went on it was just not sustainable for corps to continue using the G bugles as they became about the only customer manufacturers had for them, and it became cost-prohibitive. Lots of people didn't like the change, but lots of people don't like any kind of change at all. Also, that was about 20 years ago now. We're well into the territory where your average DCI fan doesn't even likely know of that change.
Little bit sad they edited out the guy that yelled "Give it to me!" right before the big hit. Pretty much sums up everyone's feelings right there.
why would they edit that out? :( i love stuff like that.
moler512 because its DCI.
true.
Are there any other videos on RUclips where you can still hear that?
***** Only if someone downloaded the fan network broadcast video that finals night. I have the mp3.
No need to touch yourself when you can listen to this
Why not both 😜
Cole McCleery Because this is no nut November

Ol' skool SCV Alum here. Not sure about trombones. Freakin' blew my mind!

Times really changed in 8 years, very cool to see.
i see where your coming from but as a trombone player i like seeing as much trombone as possible. like just think, a dci corps... but only trombones. that would be sick as crap
My jaw fell off at the hit; HOLY TROMBONES! That hit was worth every single one of those trombones; I don't get why people hate on them :3
I'm a trombonist, I have to say, they aren't the best for marching with, but the fact that they are rare in DCI makes moments like this so much more impactful. You get a sound that you just can't produce on a baritone.
+Ryan Pratt they're rare because they just made a rule change last last year to allow them
Well, you kinda can make baritones sound like trombones... but that means using a shallower-than-usual mouthpiece and blowing the $#@%! outta them. ;)
Trombones are awesome … but they aren’t a bugel(or valved instrumet(.
IMO this was easily the best use of trombones in the 2014 season.
the sound the trombones give on that hit is unreal.
+Nicholas Brister Couldn't agree more
+Nicholas Brister That's because they're the loudest low brass instrument and there were 24 of them. TWENTY FOUR
+DeathNote Airsoft it's not even just the volume. The color a trombone gives to an ensemble can't really be recreated with a euphonium or baritone.
Nicholas Brister I know, I love the glorified slide whistles when they sound great oh the orgasms. And the way they blend with each other it just makes it louder with the overtones
Best impact moment of 2014. Hands down.
bccadet07 Debatable.
@@Bren9431 nope
That hit. THAT HIT. Chills every time.
Honestly the greatest 20 seconds of DCI 2014.
Hello comment from 7 years ago,
Anyway Crown 2012 closer hit might be a close contender 🤷🏼♂️

That big hit just sends chills throughout my entire body

Ben Grimshaw Did you march with BK? I saw them on the 5th of July last summer
Devin D. Oregon Crusaders. But I did see BK a few times, they had a great production and they are a great corps.
this right here... this is why I play trombone. gives me the shivers and forces me to smile every time
DCI needs to bring this back to TV period, they are too cheap to do it
They donated their uniforms to my high school which is really cool
Porter?
Ryan Sorge yes
Truemukid Gaming I only ask because like half a dozen Porter kids marched Guardians last year.
That brass hit made my ears explode, but I would still watch it a thousand times. Oh my god it was beautiful
All I have to say to this is: Thank you SCV.
Incredible.
I freakin' love how they balance everything to the trombones in the opening impact! Gives me chills every time.
Here in 2022 cause I watched this video 6 years ago and it’s been etched in my brain since.

Agh. My favorite drum corps ever.

Thank you Santa Clara Vanguard for inspiring the opening to my high school band's halftime show! You can watch it on our channel if you want to!
Who could dare dislike this? Even if you don't like the music you need to appreciate the volume of the impacts. Just because your speakers blow doesn't mean you should dislike a video!
probably someone that didnt agree with the use of Trombones in DCI...
Nah cuz when i heard this i was like “wait. I’ve heard this before.” Then promptly realized “Wait.. I PLAYED THIS”
My speakers just blew out...but it was so worth it.
Ayyye nice avatar, buddy. haha
Same bro! :D
This is the definition of LOUD. And I love it.
Let's not forget the unsung heroes, the Tuba

good god it's so beautiful! we play the same scheherazade hit in my marching show this year for our low brass and i want it to sound like that!
I'm playing it this year
The valve click before the hit 😩💦
Will Cochran sup
KiwiChestnut homework right
wtf that was really a valve click?? I'm a drummer so idk how loud valves are
clark bolding yes it was. And it is glorious.
C-Doug that's astounding
I HAVE GOOSEBUMPS IN THE BEGINNING
I've listen to this 5 times in a row and I still jump at the impact. lol.
I saw this show in 2014 in North Carolina and spotted the trombones. I remember thinking, "Hmm I'm not sure how I feel about th----OH SHIT NEVERMIND!"
Me if I was there 0:39 play some thing, Me at 0:41 Im WET
Very easily the best use of trombones in DCI history! Yes even above Bloo 2016. This was just, for lack of a better term, BLOW YO' FACE OFF!!!
This was way cleaner
love it........I programmed this segment into my alarm clock to wake me up in the morning............it sure makes me up at the trombone/contra beginning hit.
The best opening hit in 2014. Full stop.
Holy mello.
so beautiful to see so many trombones
even if they did only have them for a little bit
freaken beautiful!
Sweet. Thanks a bunch for the video. 😄
i like this
Let drum corps march whatever they want. It's time to leave tradition to the individual groups and start pushing creativity.

See man, even Steve Jobs doesn't think so.

Anybody know the brand and model of the trombones?
they're Yamaha
yamaha ysl 448g I bought mine from them last year, wonderful trombone.
I wish Bagpipe bands would switch to saxophones and add trombones too...better intonation and a great sound!
chord at 1:27?

No real need for the trombones there tbh they didnt have any glissandos
Micah Lall-Trail if you play a baritone right it can be just as loud and punchy trust me lol
