I'm pretty sure both the horn players are female, while the 2 men are playing the clarinet and flute. Still an amazing composition though. Very beautiful.

This is perfectly do-able for some musicians; think of pianist Yuja Wang who has between 8 or more complete piano concerti memorized. And we're talking Brahms, Beethoven, Prokofiev, and others!
This Quintet is outstandingly rehearsed, many overlook the timing & intimacy in the phasing. The timing, spot on, interplay with a solo brass, spot on. What hit me, was from right to left, the fills near the conclusion, each instrument spoke. Mind you, I just happened upon this, I was blown away. I was into Classical at an early age
Arthur Denny This is a standard wind quintet. There are thousands of different recordings done by this type of ensemble. I hope your excitement of love for this ensemble only grows.
Jupiter holds such a special place in my heart, and this was an absolutely amazing arrangement of it! I was a tuba player in school, but I always said that if I ever did it again with a different instrument, it would be a French Horn or a Bassoon. Both have such a rich, mellow sound and this really takes advantage of that! Well done!
@@jacksonhunter2621 I won't argue. They are beautiful! I had a friend who had a gorgeous one in high school and he let me play it. It was like drinking a fine whiskey. Smooth and rich!
Even though Hanks is better known for his _Basset Horne_ ability, he is equally expert on alto clarinet, and there was no part written for Basset Horne in this arrangement. 😉
This woodwind quintet played with extraordinary musicality and artistry! It’s an honor to hear this amazing Holst composition performed at such a high level. Bravo!
I know that’s a French Horn. I’m at Music Professor and Conductor my friend. I called this ensemble a “Woodwind Quintet”. In case you didn’t know a woodwind quintet instrumentation consist of the following: clarinet, flute, oboe, French Horn and Bassoon
Sam Rowley but the horn is not a woodwind. It’s a brass instrument. If it were a woodwind quintet, then the horn would be replaced by an alto saxophone.
Jose Hill no shit stupid. He just told this other kid he’s a music professor and conductor. Idk abt you but I’m gonna just believe whatever he says about music
@@hannahreid1549 Yeah, pretty much. Some people don't get that saxophones are relatively young instruments, so in the time period where these woodwind ensembles were popular among composers, there was no alto saxophone to fill in the "alto" voicing. Therefore, they had to write in a horn instead and call it a "Wind quintet" for that reason.
Like they say: " Some people will complain about anything ( and everything ) on God's green earth, including God and the green earth." Personally I love it. I think it's great !!
As a fellow f. Horn player I’m impressed with her ability to meld perfectly into the woodwind’s tone when needed and also have her brass moments come through to the fore with a nice layered, dynamic tone to complement the rest of the wind arrangement rather than overpowering it.
majcrash I have no idea what level you’re at but once you get to about eighth grade (assuming you started at sixth) the horns clearly have a better tone than the euphonium
This brought me to tears because I remember playing this for marching band my senior year, I remember my trumpet one solo at 3:02 I remember standing on the 50 yard line playing my soul out on that solo, whole field silent for me... That solo got me a full ride scholarship to a university in Texas. My proudest moment, other than graduating TDCJ academy. Thank you for reminding me of an incredible moment of my little uneventful life.
Saw this amazing group at the Schneider Concerts at the New School in NYC this weekend. SO fresh and in sync with each other. Loved the range of music from early 19th century to early 21st century. You are in for a treat if you can catch them in person!
Fine playing of an arrangement that mostly captures Jupiter's musical content. I played oboe in a quintet for a number of years. Many people do not realize how physically demanding chamber music is! You have far fewer rests than when playing in an orchestra, and every note is going to be heard, including the clams! That these players make it look easy is credit to countless hours of practice and rehearsal plus native talent and hard-won endurance.
I remember horking up something hard and chunky while playing bassoon in a quintet because the playing was so demanding. It happened just that once. To this day I have no idea what it was or which body cavity it came from.

There needs to be a convention of all the best musician groups on RUclips to form the greatest symphonic orchestra. Calling up mnozil brass, this group, and the rest of the sections would make a group that is beyond phenomenal. Even better, they are already amazing as they are.
Flute and clarinet: a match made in heaven. It only took me about fifty years to ‘get it’. I like watching the UK’s National high school age kids at the Royal Albert Hall; the sheer volume of instruments is astounding. But with just five superb musicians, playing with feeling and precision, it is even better! I do not know how this was recorded, but the instruments meld beautifully. Perfect dynamics!
