    What is the best value GPU in the $400 to $500 price range? AMD has a very strong 16GB VRAM GPU with the 7800 XT but the last generation RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT GPUs both offer strong performance and the same 16GB of VRAM for less money after price drops. Is the 7800 XT still the way to go? And how does FSR3 factor in to the equation? Let's find out!

    Those who are building mITX rigs, or those who are concerned about their electricity bills. The RX6800 is actually EXTREMELY efficient once you start to tune it in Radeon Software. I lowered my core voltage by 100mV to 950mV (I could go further but want stability), decreased my clocks to by 100MHz to 2050MHz, and increased the VRAM by 100MHz to 2100MHz. Performance is pretty much similar, but I went from gpu core power draw of 200W to 120-130W, a reduction of ~70W putting the card in the same ballpark as a 6600XT. The reason for this; Having tons of CUs at peak efficiency levels is way much power efficient than a fewer CUs at terrible efficiency levels (high clock speeds).

    • @sparklingion
      @sparklingion 8 месяцев назад +13

      @@max-lee its not overestimating, it's also how well and how long the psu will perform into the future. Most psu's are at max efficiency at around 30-50%, meaning they convert power from wall to psu with the least power loss in conversation between those usages. Especially for those in the eu spending, 15-20 more on a psu with more efficiency and maybe higher wattage is far worth because it will save money after 1-2 years of use compared to spending less on a less efficient or lower wattage psu.

    Great review, I'm looking at a 7800XT right now myself. Gotta say I really hate how accepted upscaling and frame generations have become to gamers for artificial performance. Ultra benchmarks make no sense when being upscaled as if you're going to Ultra you want image quality and the quality degrades quite significantly with an upscale, just like DVD upscaling vs BluRay or 4K upscaled bluray vs. a 4K native etc. It's really become something GPU manufactures use to pump their numbers when really their big 1080p numbers are just 720p.

    • @ValkisCalmor
      @ValkisCalmor 8 месяцев назад +3

      Agreed. It can be a great option to have when you need to turn some setting down, but this trend where marketing pretends it's free performance needs to stop. "Ultra" means no compromises, even the best upscaling is always a compromise.
      The new Alan Wake 2 recommendations are particularly egregious, some of the presets they advertise are using DLSS/FSR on Performance mode.

      Well DLSS looks as good as native so FSR being just slightly worse while offering double the VRAM seems ok. Talking about 4k ultra quality, I wouldn't use FSR any other way. The big question is whether optimized settings at native 4k looks better than ultra settings with FSR, haven't seen any videos on that and needed to decite between nvidea and amd, went for amd hoping fsr looks good enough

    AV1 encoder matters for wireless VR too - if someone has a Quest 3, then streaming via AV1 improves the quality quite a bit. The 7800XT seems like a great card for a VR rig, because besides the AV1, it scales quite well with higher resolutions, and has plenty of VRAM.

    • @Alvin853
      @Alvin853 8 месяцев назад +2

      Does the AV1 encoder on RDNA3 even support the resolution of the Quest 3? I know AMD f'd up badly on the implementation of the AV1 encoder, it can't even encode 1080p properly (it has to add 2 rows of black to the bottom making it 1082p), odd resolutions like the ones used on VR headsets might be an even bigger issue.

The tipping point to not upgrade came down to my PSU. My current PSU is 650 watts and supports the RX6800, The recommended PSU for the RX7800XT is 700 watts. So I would have to factor in the extra cost of a PSU upgrade. Seeing how 700 watts is the minimum, I might want to build-in some headroom for future expansions.

    If you also take into account the future resale value and which of the cards will retain more of that value then the entire equation changes. Just because it's more expensive now doesn't mean much when you can retain more value with a better GPU. Your cost will actually be less per month with a more valuable card than if you were to buy a less valuable card. So yes you're saving money right now by buying the cheaper card but you are going to spend more overtime.

    Another plus with all three of these cards is how well they overclock. You can undervolt and overclock all of them for great performance gains. They all three gain between 10-14 percent performance while running cooler and using less power. I have a 6800 currently and with it's current settings I get performance around what most benchmarks get for a 6800xt while running around 60c and using 160-180w of power (spikes up to 193w max). The comparison needs to be between the 6800 and the 7800xt because of the same amount of stream processors between the two. The 6800xt has almost 1000 more stream processors and is about 3% slower. That is a generational achievement from AMD. in addition - and this will differ significantly from region to region and from seller to seller, but it is worth keeping in mind - 7800xt being a new card, could lead in availability.
    Local store where I constantly buy components (I like it, since it never had failed me in terms of service\warranties etc) has a lot of good manufacturer`s 7800xt cards, and significantly less 6800xt, just a dozen "for order" (not one available right away).
    So here supply for 7800xt is much better, which means that if something happens I could get replacement much faster.
    - 6800 being a more budget friendly card seems to have significant reserves "for order" , even though it is not available right away here.
    Not the most important metrics for sure, but still, 7800xt has this QoL pro.

    The 7800XT is THE value card for high refresh 1440p. The 6800XT got down to $440 during BF sales, but it's back to $490 as supplies dwindle, just $10 less than a 7800XT. I bought my 6800XT a year ago before we had the 7800XT, for $540, a good deal at the time. At a $10 difference, nobody should buy a 6800XT.
    I think these recent GPU trade-in programs are a great service considering how deeply eBay stabs its sellers. I don't sell my graphics cards when I upgrade; I give them to friends and family (usually in a full rig), use them in another system, or save them as spares. I would never leave myself without a capable spare GPU for my gaming rig (or a full-on spare PC for that matter).

      @Son37Lumiere 8 месяцев назад

      Depends on what you plan on doing. If it's just gaming, than the 7800X3D is the fastest CPU bar none. If you do significant productivity work than you should get a 7900X3D or 7950X3D. With a 7900 XTX you're obviously playing at at least 1440p ultra settings so you're more GPU limited than CPU so you can also move down to a 7700X or 7900X with little to no real drop in gaming performance in most cases to save some money. Motherboards are kind of a crap shoot, Asrock offers more for the money in general and most have 2 m.2 slots now except the low end cheap boards.

    I decided to get the rx 6800 a year ago instead of the XT because the price was good and i liked the much lower watts consumption & temps.
    Also the temps for the rx 7800xt are very impressive

      I have my hellhound 7800xt overclocked and undervolted in a itx case and top out at 66c. That’s with a fan speed cap of 50%. So agreed, the temps are good with the right aib card.

      yep 6800 nonXT has probably the best fps/watts ratio in whole rx 6000s and rtx 3000s series together

      @@nevernicemeadow yet it doesn't have enough FPS to be close to XT
