Woodturning - Latticework Trivet Experiment

- I find trivets to be an excellent canvas for experimental or creative woodturning. In this video we make a trivet to try and discover the issues involved when turning double-sided lattice patterns.
A trivet may have a utilitarian purpose in the kitchen or dining room, however that is not why I like making them. I like trivets as decorative tableware.
Never heard the term ‘trivet’ before? That’s OK, here’s a definition:

Thank you! Cheers!
That's pretty cool looking
Thank you!
Muy buen trabajo. Me voy a mirar bien tu canal pues se sale de lo normal y eso me encanta. Saludos desde Barcelona en España!!
Thanks again. I do like a technical challenge as making the same stuff over and over again can get dull. I’m glad you find the videos interesting.
Just found your channel. Love what you're doing. So many unique woodturning things that I haven't seen elsewhere. Lots of great ideas I need to try.
Thank you very much! Woodturning is a huge field and there and there is always something else to try.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Enjoyed the video; always worth trying something new. I did wonder if hot gluing the piece onto its backing plate would have worked... a times it was a little too close to the metal for me.
Yeah, this was too close to the metal for me too. Although it was the counterweight that got my parting tool, not the mounting screws. :-0
Hot glue would certainly be an option for securing the work. I’ll have to keep that option in mind as I continue to experiment with this method. Thanks for the input.
You could put some marks in pen on the side of your parting tool, that should help to keep the depth of cut consistent.
That’s a great idea! I’ll have to try it out soon. Thanks for posting.
Awesome idea. With some fine tuning, this could be a really sweet addition to the bag of turning tricks! Thanks for sharing!! I'm going to see if I can do something similar on my 10x18 lathe.. maybe make some lattice coasters!
Thank you for commenting! With the mostly positive results I had with this experiment, I’m definitely going to keep working on the details.
It’s good to read that you’re not letting having a mini lathe stop you from trying new woodturning techniques. I used my mini lathe for a few years before I knew I wanted to buy a much bigger machine.
Just be aware that a mini lathe can be a “gateway tool” into the world woodturning. :-P
