The three soloists are siblings, all graduates of Julliard, all have performed at Carnegie Hall, and all have had made solo recordings (or conducted recordings) for leading record companies. Kyung-Wha Chung shared first prize with Pichas Zimmerman in the Edgar Leventritt Competition, and Myung-Whun Chung was a a student of Oliver Messien, principle assistant conductor under Carlos Maria Giuliani (LA Philharmic), and is now one of the worlds greatest living conductors... The only musical family I can think of rivaling such accomplishments is that of JS Bach!
This is a truly beautiful piece, beautifully performed. One of Beethoven's most under rated compositions, IMHO. And likewise, Chung Myung Wha is one of the modern era's most under appreciated cellists. Just one man's honest opinion, but I think this performance goes a long way in validating both ideas. On another front. Japan awarded MIsora Hibari the People's Honor Award posthumously after she died prematurely in June 1989. I'm thinking the Chung Siblings deserve such acknowledgement, and it would be nice if they didn't have to die first. Their contribution to the development of classical music in S. Korea in undeniable.
I don't know about Myung-Wha, but Kyung-Wha has already received quite a few honours from Korea from the early stage of her career, most notably the highest medal for a civilian after her London career kicked off... because, apart from her artistic merit, she became 'the most famous Korean' in the world when her motherland was still obscure. Kyung-Wha was duly and rightly very proud of the honour, and used the photo taken at the medal ceremony as her record cover of Bach Partita & Sonata in 1976. But anyway, I overall agree the Chung sibling's career and fame would have been much greater if they were white and male, and if they came from more powerful nation (in their youth, Korea was still one of the poorest nations). Even Myung-Whun's dismissal from Bastille opera is shrouded with racial prejudice. But then, such hardship is sadly the fate of the pioneers.

I think you are sadly right in attributing at least some of the blame for the hard time classical performers from Asia had/have to deal with to racism. I think it mostly unconscious nowadays, but it's still there. Hopefully things have improved since the 1960's. I can't think of any other reason for the disparity in views between, just for example, the RCO's performances of Beethoven's 3rd and 5th Symphonies and the SPO's of the same works. Chung was simply brilliant leading that orchestra.

Omg that 440hz tuning from 1984 really caught me off guard...sounds so encapsulated...we are always encouraged to tune higher and higher as time goes on to attain a freed more driven projection of sound.. listening to 440 sounds a bit conservative but def not cliche lol
They are indeed. Myung-Wha, the cellist is the oldest here, Kyung-Wha the second, and Myun-Whun, the conductor is the youngest of the three. They did perform and record as 'Chung Trio' when the busy schedule as soloist allowed.

Absolutely awesome. Myung-Wha Chung is a superb cellist. A magnificent family trio, no doubt.

I thought to have this as a 'background music' while busy w other matters. No sooner did I realize my inability to do nothing else but be mesmerized, watching and listening to Kyung Wha, Myung Wha and Myung Whun Chung. What a blessed times do we live in, allowing us access to the best of past and present musicians.
This is one of the legendary rendition of this great concerto.
My eyes are filled with tears of joy and thanks whenever I listen to this.
Watching, listening to this gifted sisters-and-brother trio, is (for me) an experience in humility.

수많은 리허설을 하면서 이미 지휘자의 행동, 템포를 다 외웠기때문에 무대에서는 안쳐다 보는 경우가 많습니다
Swr이 어떤 오케스트라인데.. 지휘자 박자 없어도, 돌아가는데 전혀 문제 없음. 하지만 결정적일때 지휘자 보게 되어잇음 단순히 템포나 언제 나와될지 이런건 세계적인 오케한테는 중요한 게 아님.
동네 학예회인가요? 지휘자만 쳐다보고 연주하게… 저 분들은 다 프로에요. 미리 다 연습때 맞춰본분들입니다. 에효
오직 감탄.감격만이 있을 뿐.
