Decades ago (pre-9/11) I was in NYC for a Saturday lunch date and just on whim bought a rush ticket to a NY Phil evening concert. I didn't even care what was on the program, but lo and behold KWC was there to play this concerto. (I was fortunate to get a great orchestra ticket.) When she played I was absolutely transformed: she played with fire, with passion, with almost a wildness that couldn't be contained. The audience was transfixed and rapt, and when she finished, we went wild! Everyone stood and clapped and shouted. She came out four times for applause (but did not play an encore). To this day, it remains one of my greatest concert experiences.
I remember Kyung Wha Chung from the seventies, when she was a young person, playing Tchaikovsky´s violinconcerto in Reykjavik, Iceland. My first LP with her playing, was the Bruch violinconcerto. That was when she became my favourit. I bought all of her recordings that I could find, but one was missing: The Brahms violinconcerto. Years ago, I gave up looking, and this is the first time I hear her play the Brahms concerto. Surprise, surprise. I´m very happy with it.
jon holger Holm She did record Brahms concerto in 2000 on EMI (now Warner) with Simon Rattle and Vienna Phil. Do check it out along with other videos of her Brahms concerto performances on my channel. By the way, I didn't know she performed in Iceland too. Thank you for the new information.
+twofinedays man that music.!!! iv subbed Iv just uploaded a original composition for piano and orchestra took me 4 years to compose. and it feature a REAL ORCHESTRA. please leave me some feedback Im not james horner but im stubburn! do you guys enjoy my music. M.J
There are many performers with beautiful tone, and many performers with perfect technique, but only Kyung-hwa Chung plays the thoughtful Brahms that resonates with the heart. It feels like my mother's warmth touches my heart...
Musicality, technique, temperament, joy, fun, heroism, ecstasy, a very beautiful woman with her superb violin.......its all there. Combined with Brahms' violin concerto this is a top achievement.
Chung's emotion and dedication to music is just wonderful. She is very passionate and always emotionally charged, yet never gets heavy handed. She is one of the greatest legends.
I went to a performance in the 1970's in Middlesbrough Town Hall UK, when she was very young - wonderful. So pleased I have heard her againon this video. What a talent!
Her bowing almost feels like slashing with one-edged sword.. It's so electrifying to witness such violin player and human being. I sincerely appreciate uploading this to RUclips.

this concerto is so incredibly beautiful. The mixture of the melodic first theme, the rhytmic second theme and some amazing side-themes in the solo violin, like the sugary sweet melody that differs so beautifully from the rhythmic rest make it sound great. Also the solo part is incredible, as Brahms was no violin player and often ignored tips from friends who told him his violin parts were bordering on the impossible. Understandably Brahms never attempted to write another violin concerto. Love!
The billions of neurons in the human brain are capable of more connections then there are atoms in the universe. During the first movement cadenza you can see Chung in close-up making a few million of those connections, an extraordinary performance. Many many thanks for posting.
What an orchestra, with André Previn at his sensitive best, which sets the scene for Kyung_Wha Chung to overwhelm us with such confidence and humility, beauty and power, playing the magic of Brahms on a plane of perfection that few can reach, and all so profoundly real, human and humane in feeling, colour, mood and expression.
Magnífica intérprete, con uma técnica depurada, precisa, y a la vez sutíl y emotiva, de uno de los más grandes conciertos de violín que hemos recibido, en heréncia, del gran Brahms.

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto - up there with other great recordings like Hilary Hahn's, Itzhak Perlman's, and Ida Haendel's. Chung demonstrates superb musicality and accuracy here!
Heard/saw her live in the late seventies. She was an amazing player then and still is in this recording. Incredible authority from the very first bowstroke. I remember that she used to bob up and down like mad - this physicality seems to have moderated, but she still makes some sudden movements when playing here. Extraordinary musician, awesome (Juilliard/Galamian) technique. Truly a pleasure. Interesting to see the instrument close-up: presumably either the 'Ferni' or 'Rode' del Gesu, both c. 1732. Fingerboard is starting to look as if it could use some TLC - it must get a real hammering!
O just the sheer JOY shining from her face at the end! She started off a great violinist and became an even greater one over her career - an exceptionally beautiful woman whose physicality conveys an extra-musical sense, weaving back into the music not just emotions, but an emphatic directional command of the composer’s intentions if and as realized in the ideal performer. Her emerald and rose dress is like a perfume, or the cherry on top of the sundae!!

Yes, actually she considers the "spirit of God" as one of the greatest inspirations in her life as a musician...and as a person. At least that's what I get from an interview she did with one of Korean TV stations.
I fell in love with violin concertos just a little under a year, and whenever i tried listening a concerto that i have not listened to, i know whose version to look for, most of the violin concertos i found Ms. Chung's being my favorite version: Mendelssohn, Bruch, Walton, Beethoven, i am sure the list will go on...She's the most exceptional of all violinists i heard
All her recordings has its merits, whether one find them suitable to their taste or not, because she's been always very reluctant recording artist who wouldn't come to the recording session unless she thinks she's absolutely ready. Kyung Wha Chung is one of the very very best. She makes everything she plays comes alive.
Brahms is the most sophisticated concerto , takes power and maturity, Chung's rendition is near perfect.

True Talent!! I saw her when she was 16. I was so impressed of her ever since..! I was 15 then! So Proud of HER..Kyung Wha Chung.
when it comes to Brahms no one can beat Kyung-Wha Chung..this concerto fits into her style..
It's a superb rendition. However, there are still a few equally good and better renditions, though. Mutter, Shoji and Oistrakh, for instance.
***** I think you are the one who's polluting youtube with chauvinistic remarks. Everyone has his opinion and no one has the right to say he is wrong.
The greatest violinist ever...a true legend. In memory of Elizabeth Holborn violin instructor.
Every one of her performances is unique in its own way. What an artist. Such a charming lady too. This is probably the most confident I've seen her.
I went to a performance in the 1970's in Middlesbrough Town Hall UK, when she was very young - wonderful. So pleased I have heard her againon this video. What a talent!

Kyung Wha Chung is my favorite Asian violinist. She is special, she understands a lot. Wonderful interpretation.
May I ask who is your favorite, outside Asia?
Brilliant! Such fire, passion, and uncompared musicality.
and loved how she gave a rose to Previn at the end.

Tremendous passion in her playing. Bravo!
The very best performance of this concerto
Majestic performance by Chung and needless to say about Andre Previn & orchestra.
Thanks so much for sharing such a wonderful performance in YTube

She plays with great authority. It is good to see Andre Previn, whom I admired as a jazz pianist in the 1950s and 1960s.
