Here's a technique I use when twisting hair. I braid the base about one or two revolutions and the hair in two and start twisting using the rope twist technique. The tighter the twist the less chance the shed hair has to twist around potential loosened hair. When retwisting use oil on dry hair to take down and then apply moisture for each one. This will prevent breakage during the take down. Good luck!
I do this as well. I’m doing a challenge right now but was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get moisture into my twists with added hair. So I did regular twists and hunny, the FRIZZ and budding almost made me give up. Do you have any issues with moisture when adding hair in your rope twists?
@@nikkifranklin2737 it always different when moisturizing with added hair .if you moisturise twice every week I think it will be more because the added hair can soak the moisture and secondly the way to moisturise it . Thank you so much for being honest about how work and life can get in the way of taking care of your hair. Very vulnerable thing to share that i know most naturals have experienced to some degree even if they won't admit it. I love my hair, but some days, i can't even fulfill my basic needs with the time I have, so thank you for sharing that 💜
Haha “I’ve given up headband,” I definitely need one of those! I’m new to washing my hair in twists and definitely learned the hard way to remove shed hairs first. Love your tip about stretching with Bantu knots. I can’t wait to try all your tips.
This is exactly the video I've been looking for! Haven't really found any other videos by 4c Naturals addressing the specific problem of matting when washing hair in small twists. Thank you so much ❤
Stretching your hair after washing is a great tip. I immediately go into detangling, moisturizing and sealing because I'm afraid of moisture loss. I will try this next time.
I wore twists exclusively from 2013-2015 and my hair grew so much. I used to love washing my hair in twists but unfortunately, when I would unravel the twists, I would see dandruff on the strands of hair even though my scalp would be cleansed.
You’re not alone!!! I think that’s the price you pay sometimes for washing in twists. I found the more frequently I wash the less this is an issue. Also if I’m proactive about using an anti dandruff product like sulfur 8 on my scalp immediately after wash day and routinely until my next wash day, then this doesn’t end up being an issue.
Yea,I have to wash my hair and maintain my hair in twist. My hair tangles very easliy and it's course. But I do notice that when I leave my hair undone for too long the detangling process is longer. I also recognize that if Im not in the mood to do my hair,I dont do it until I am 100% wanting to do it.If Im not 100% I start to get impatient, then breakage occurs. I wash my hair every 2-3 months, but thats because my hair is covered under wigs all the time and also work is super busy. I want to take my time with my hair.
Wow great video, but I wish I'd seen it before washing my hair in mini twists this weekend. I seem to have done all the 'don't's'.😂 Going back to watch your older video for next time.
I never thought about stretching my hair after washing it as it's drying. I do wash my twists while wearing extended styles without re-twising, but stretching should help my hair since my rate of coiling/shrinkage is pretty significant. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for teaching me years ago how to wash in twists. It was a game changer. Before you , I was frightened of tangling while washing in twists. I've not learned that you wash on freshly twisted hair, not on old twists.
I wash in twists too! i see a lot of people say they braid at the roots... I've found that braiding the hair can put too much tension on my roots/edges so I choose to flat twist at the roots instead and wrap the ends around each other kind of like a Bantu knot on the ends. this way my roots are loose but fixed to avoid matting of my hair but also to keep the ends protected and to avoid tangles. i choose to stretch my hair with hair bands bantu knots tend to tug on my hair too much.

Great video, Nancy. I took my braids down this weekend after 5 weeks, and indulged myself in an extravagantly long wash day/spa. I’m still enjoying your 9 months protective style challenge. I’m currently resting my hair in flat twists for a fortnight then I’ll put it in knotless braids for 6 weeks. Thanks for the inspiration. God bless you and your dear family.
@@EfficientlyNaturalI start with a mild shampoo because of the buildup up from taking down braids. Next I put on a clay mask (bentonite and rhassoul clay mixed with green tea and ACV & some essentials oils) for about 20 to 30 mins. After a rinse, I follow up with an Ayurvedic mask prepped the night before (henna, amla and brahmi mixed with warm coffee - to fight Postpartum shedding - and some olive oil for slip) I leave that on for 4 hours and rinse it off with a conditioner to get all the herb flecks out of my hair. Next is a moisturizing deep conditioner (I mix in some olive oil, raw honey and aloe Vera gel) and sitting under my hood steamer for 20 minutes. In the meantime I’ll dispense my leave in conditioner into a glass bowl and set it in a larger bowl of hot water so that it absorbs into my strands easily, after my DC is rinsed out. Finally I seal my strands with hair grease because it gives me the best occlusion properties and I even grease my scalp lightly which keeps it supple and fungus free. Can't say the water + massage were super effective for me, I may do an apple cider vinegar rinse next time. After, I deep conditioned and just applied a butter to the mids and ends (trying to cut down on products), then retwisted using the butter as well. Retwisting took quite a while, but a little less time than it usually does because all of my parts were still pretty clean. Hi there! Can I deep condition with twists in ? I detangle my hair before wash day and put it in twists. My hair isn’t long so I end up with a lot of twists and it’s a hassle to take them down the apply the deep conditioner then twist them up again then take them down to moisturise and put them up again. I would only like to take them down to moisturise at the end of wash day, will this be a good method ?
Hi, Efficiently Natural. I was wondering how your protective style challenge ended. Also, did you reach your hair goals for 2021. Would love to hear from you.
I'm confused...do you unravel your twist to remove shed hairs then retwist before washing and then unravel the twist to redo them back...I don't get it please?
No my hair was already unraveled because I was wearing a braid out. Just twisted to complete the wash process...And happened to ultimately decide to wear it in a larger twist style for the week. When I twist my hair as a longer protective style it’s usual smaller and they would already be twisted prior to my wash day.
I find it to be very moisturizing but it still gets your hair clean. Only problem is I have atopic reaction to gluten so I had to stop using this line.
My hair just cannot handle twists. My hair be like, "Welcome to your loc journey." Only braids for me.

I noticed you didn't use the tension method tbis time. Have you stopped using the bkoe dryer all together?
Hi, Efficiently Natural. I was wondering how your protective style challenge ended. Also, did you reach your hair goals for 2021. Would love to hear from you.
Using oil to detangle will help you do much !! Or aloe Vera so much slip
Is the book no longer available? When I clicked on link, it said access denied
Girl I JUST washed my hair in twists yesterday 😭 damn I should've waited til today so I could watch this beforehand lol
Lol!!! I pretty showed all the things not to do. Hahahaha you probably did better than I did. I’ve gotten lazy lately
😂🥲Same
Do you condition your hair with twist in as well?
Suggestion: can you show how to grow your hair?
Hi Karis! I sure can!
@@EfficientlyNatural Now I get thank you 😊
Do you like the creme of nature shampoo? Is it moisturizing or stripping?
I find it to be very moisturizing but it still gets your hair clean. Only problem is I have atopic reaction to gluten so I had to stop using this line.
Beautiful hair, I’ll just use rubber bands and oil
