I forgot that the thing that keeps him alive was the miracle, when crisanta and the penitent one killed the high wills the power that keeps the penitent one alive alongside with the mea culpa disappeared. Thus making him dead in the true ending.
Excellent observation!
A final rest for the silent one in penance. A fitting end.
I still don't get it ,why miracle ressurect penitent one ,then let him kill the miracle,is miracle want to die
@@andijosh4771 Miracle want him to be the father (in true ending before DLC), but he learned the truth from the forth visage.
@@MK-xj5bythe high will is evil and need to be stop for simply ehh, too end suffering in custodia
Gonna stop you right off the bat. Escribar didn't turn his back to the congregation because of some 'Holier than Thou' sense of self-righteous egotism, he turned his back because he genuinely lost faith in the congregation, and believed that the reason The Miracle no longer spoke to him was because the congregation was no longer seeking penance in earnest, but simply going through the motions and paying lip service to seeking penance.
He turned his back to them in disgust, and prayed to The Miracle to deliver true penance onto them, and the Miracle answered by turning Escribar into the massive tree, and then into the Pile of Ash. When the congregation saw that Escribar's throne was vacant atop the Pile of Ash, they coveted his position and authority, and attempted to climb the Pile of Ash, only to be weighed down by their sins, submerged in the ash, and converted into the first monsters. Finally, Escribar was again transformed into 'The Last Son of The Miracle' to act as the guardian of the Pile of Ash and the last trial for those who seek to end the Age of Penance.
But what exactly were they seeking 'penance' for? Or is the miracle simply a demon that fed of a general sense of guilt?
@@alias234 If I got it right, the Miracle is not an Entity. It's a Phenomenon that casts pain, agony and sorrow on those who Guilt weighs heavily on their shoulders disguised as some righteous and enlightened event that cleanse them (hence the name "Miracle"). The three entities that were displayed towards the game's story are probably the ones that casts the Miracle on Cvstodia, making them the "Demons" you said in this case.
I dunno. I may be wrong...
@@bonissoni1989 That's what the video says, yes.
@@alias234 Their faith started with "The father" feeling an immense guilt, and "a miracle" happened, fusing him into a tree.
This was clearly a supernatural event, so, seeking answers around it, they built an entire faith around guilt and penance, like how we used to credit the rain to some gods.
That's the response to waht they were "seeking penance for". They just kind of did. They were raised into an entire set of beliefs around the concept, and lived with it.
What was _really_ happening is the whole 3 entities casting the phnomenom.
Bro came in like my profile pic 💀
woulnt mind watching a 60 minutes video of you explaining the entire lore in depth! that was fantastic thank you very much good sir
The "entire" lore in-depth is probably several hours-worth of content....and I would still ABSOLUTELY watch every min.

I hadn't played much of the game but I had a feeling that the "Miracle" was just a curse that was misunderstood.
this a good take
0:36 "my great guilt" was said just before he died (the father)
1:54 Escribar thought that the miracle had abandon them due to their lack of faith
3:24 the peniten one actually can use his voice, but the miracle gave him a "gift" to remain silent...so he can talk but won't do it lol
3:54 in the comic, crisanta told the penitent one that if he was chosen by the miracle they would see each other again

For some reason I feel like the song Bloodhail by Have A Nice Life would be a perfect match for this game simply through its sheer bleakness
very good my dude i kinda realise the ending but still I love blasphemous and I thank you for this video
Yes! More Blasphemous lore content, it's so rich.
I think blasphemous is an amazing game and I loved the story, I think the main message of the game is that by carrying the guilt and pain of your long gone past and others it will only destroy you abs to be free of it you must break the shackles of holds you down in life. The throne I think represents the desire for punishment that humans want for there wrong doings and how after you have been punished you will feel like a king but in all reality your still holding yourself down, because all you did was continue the cycle of pain. Lastly the game also comments on religion and how people are with it, for example on how quriece got killed for being a free thinker. You can’t be free from guilt by being punished, your free from it when you overcome your own sorrow by freeing yourself from your or others past and truly growing into a complete individual. The penitent one truly completed his brothers goal to be able to be free from their pain. GOD THIS GAME IS REALLY GOOD.
Indeed.

Im starting to think this Miracle is an Evil entity to bring this much misery lol
I played the base game and did not realize at all that so much new content was available, AND FOR FREE. Truly amazing, playing it again immediately
Im falling in love with this game all over again
Kinda cool that they released the true ending two years later from release.
Shit, i though the penitent one becoming a tree was canon.
Me too. LOL!
I love the art style.

Thanks! I was looking out for your comment!
Blasphemous is a story where I slash anyone on my path, I collect my reward, then self gratification. 😷🤣😂
Thank you for your explanation. Makes more sense to me now.
Nice summary and worth to watch. There was so much going on in Blasphemous and it was hard to keep up with the story actually. I thought the great Miracle was actually some sort of a plague that has overcome Cvstodia and brought all these monsters that occupied the lands and you were chosen to free Cvstodia from this "plague". I guess i made up my own story to make sense of it. lol.
I like your version too.
I mean from my understanding that is actually in a nutshell what happened.
i had the same story line in my head lol
Very nice!
So is it accurate to say The Miracle used the Penitent One as a vessel to take on all sin and guilt, then comes to bear it on High Will, which is a manifestation of all the misled belief and prayer? Escribar turned his back on High Will, was turned into a giant tree and burned, so the mountain of ash could swallow anyone wanting to ascend the throne, essentially cutting them off from High Will.
I love this games lore. It is filled with ex-catholic angst. Knowing the game studio is based in Spain makes it all the more clear. The entire story seems to be an allegory for misinterpreting God and misrepresenting faith in him, something that has plagued the church in general, but especially the catholic church, since its inception
Sheesh thank you for explaining the story
I feel like the animation style change and the tone and everything really shifted with the DLC in a way that feels kind of like it betrayed the base game.
It goes from grounded cosmic horror of a catholic bent to anime.
I’m sure the change was to set up the sequel that comes out in 2023
Yeah I was wondering the same thing and I kinda hate it, but it's still good
Idk man i sort of like it, ig im just weak to the godslayer character trope ever since i got into god of war
i had just finished playing for 6 hrs straight and im trying to remember and process the lore 😭
Well that cleared it up
I haven't played in a while so decided to just check out lore since the DLCs dropped. Was Jocinero mentioned more? I always wondered about that, since he was imprisoned I knew something was fishy with the High Wills and The Miracle. So some other power exists, hopefully the sequel goes more into him and the cherubs under his charge.
I think that it was the twisted one who resurrected the penitant, the high wills only cared about furthering the worship and suffering they fed from.
In the ending where the penitant takes the throne they send a servant to take the blade from him, as he had used it to take the suffering of the people onto himself, something the high wills would be very angry about..
So I can't help but wonder WHY the Twisted one felt so much guilt and desire to be punished in the first place?
I am also very interested in what he may have done, but it’s likely we may never know.
Are you religious, or know someone who is? Do you know anyone who is catholic? I'm an ex-evangelical and guilt is sort of part of the game for organized religion. I know people who suffer from so much guilt, not because they have done anything wrong but because they cannot feel the love of god they are preached to about every week
Consider that this game is based on what basically is an overly exaggerated representation of the kingdom of Spain during the times of the holy inquisition. "Guilt" and "penance" and "sin" and all that BS is an integral part of the belief of the catholic religion, basically used to convince you that there's totally something wrong with you, and only these people's imaginary friend can fix it, naturally. "Holier than thou" and all that shit.
So it's a dramatization of the idea that he considered himself a sinner and was full of guilt, for whatever reason. In this game everybody's atoning for something, everybody's guilty, everybody's a sinner, because they simply are. Indeed, the only healthy people in this game are the citizens of Albero, which is considered maybe the last safe refuge in Custodia, and they work night and day to cure illnesses and keep asking themselves "WTF is wrong with this miracle, this is totally unfair".
BDSM
great recap you make the story make sense, while playing the game half the time the lore gets confusing and you left wonder what is this?
Looking forward to your explanation of blasphemous 2
I’m finishing my playthrough now! As soon as I’m done, the lore and theory videos will be uploaded steadily until Lies of P comes out!
Just recently finished all 3 endings, and I must say that my favorite ending is the second one where the penitent one basically sacrifice himself and basically became the patron saint of cvstodia.
You forgot about Perpetua and Esdras' role in setting the Penitent One in the right direction. Seems like Perpetua had an inkling that something was up. I think the siblings both served under Crisanta. Who knows, maybe Crisanta herself, under the influence of the High Wills, killed Perpetua to silence her.
Also they show Nacimiento in the Wounds of Eventide trailer but his story goes nowhere. Wth happened to the thing that came out of his chest? I thought it'd be tied to the ending but nothing, unless they plan on using him in the sequel.
Nacimiento means "born" in Spanish
I think they confirmed blasphemous 2 is in the works rn
I have the game. I finished the good ending, the bad ending, and the true ending but i didnt realize so many details about the story. My focus was in finish the game. I loved your vídeo
Thank you so much.
the game ends with an abstract cliffhanger because there's going too be a sequel
I find this game's lore fascinating!
Cuz u a giga chad.
I find it highly confusing
Even when it’s explained
All the words don’t make sense
@jonesygrets6029 Trust me, it took me a long while to figure it out. Sadly, much like in real life, things like religion and politics are shrouded in mystery and confusion due to the extensive use of outdated language and wordy vernacular.
What a great game that was
I think that thr high wills was only the most recent of the gods that have plagued custodia, the actions of the father inspired enough faith to allow the high wills to bring themselves into existence.
No! In reality the High Wills have existed long before the event of the Twisted One (although they themselves claim that the Ancient Procession on the other side of the Dream is even older than them). Trying to interpret their words, it seems that the High Wills are the fruit of the excessive fervor and religious belief present in the world of Custody (probably the spiritual need and necessity of its inhabitants, to believe in a "higher will" to which to entrust their prayers, dreams and hopes), which over time became so strong and so intense that it literally ended up manifesting the entity in question in existence ..... the High Wills, precisely. As they say themselves, they are "Word (practically faith) becoming flesh".
Originally, however, the High Wills were not yet powerful enough to be able to manifest their influence in the earthly world of Custodia ..... and in fact, it was the Twister One event that gave them the "ticket" to be able to access Custodia, using the very strong desire of the same to receive punishment for his sins, as a "means" to generate a sort of "connecting channel" between the real world and the other part of the Dream where the High Wills reside, thanks to which they were able to send the Miracle on the earthly world, and thus extend their influence also on the world of the living. Their goal was simply to exploit the "events" created by the Miracle to dramatically increase the faith and religious fanaticism of the inhabitants of the Custody (both the living and the souls of the dead, present in the Ancient Procession), to accumulate the greatest quantity of possible "faith", which the High Wills then consumed in order to obtain "light and time" for themselves (prolong their existence indefinitely) and "rise above Heaven itself" (become a God in all respects , in simple terms). In summary, the High Wills were created out of the Custodia's need for a "God" to believe in, but in reality they are simply a parasitic existence that has exploited that faith, for its own personal gain.
@@zadkal8873 I share this view as well.
@@zadkal8873 kinda like the nature of evil in berserk, good analysis btw
@@zadkal8873that has got to be hands down, the most disturbing, most malicious action anything or anyone can ever do. So the High Wills were simply created by the people of Cvstodia to seek a savior for their sins, but instead they have a consciousness that instead use their prayers and faith to become immortal. That’s truly sickening.
Question: Did the religion in Cvstodia began before the event of the Twisted One, or were there different religions at play?
@@paulkuchnicki6404 The original religion existed long before the High Wills themselves (the proof is the Ancient Procession on the other side of the dream, which according to the High Wills is older than themselves). In fact they were "created" precisely by the excessive religious fervor present in Cvstodia, which was therefore already extremely rooted at that time. The Twisted One came long after the High Wills, and with him the religion based on the Miracle was born, which however is only an "evolution" of the initial religion that was already present.
got this on sale for 7$ on xbox, the sale doesnt end till 1-2-21 =] i cant wait to check this game out, its gonna be tough im sure
Same. Got it for 6.24 on psn.
I just finished eventide for the first time, and this video has just lead to me actually understanding the story for the first time lmao
How do you get to this 4th visage? I killed serpies and Isidora but not know how to get to this new content!
Wait, wait, wait. I haven’t played this game in a while but when I beat it, I climbed the mountain of ash and stabbed myself with the sword. Then years later someone came up and took the sword. Does this game have multiple endings?
Yes, there are a total of 3 different endings. The first 2 endings available prior to the release of the Wounds of Eventide DLC are now considered alternate endings. The canon ending can only be obtained via the new content.
The High Wills are not The Miracle. The Wills refer to The Miracle in the third person. They also say The Procession is older than them, and that The Miracle created it.
So,The Miracle is a phenomenon created by the High Wills ?
"oh you play blasphemous? explain its story in under ten mi-"
It might be acting as an embryo for whoever the figure is inside, but to me it looks much more like a heart than an embryo whatever that might mean about the nature of the being inside i dont know xD
I thought maybe its like a giant mea culpa heart but the mea culpa hearts arent like literal hearts are they? I dunno...
You know what's funny
If you look at it in an outside perspective it's basically a violent retelling of the story of Jesus
Man sent to right the wrongs of the church
Carries the burden of sin both literally and figuratively
"Mea Culpa" means "my fault" in latin
Just as Jesus carried the sins with the cross
The penitent one carried the sins with the sword
...I can only imagine that there either will be a another DLC or sequel all together, where the "penance of the heavens" (How I think the embryo would be called, if it was the penitent one reborn.) is explained.
Is some of this new game+? A lot of things i have never seen after finishing the game.
So who resucitated the penitent one and why?
Honestly hate it they went this Gnostic/JRPG route with the god actually being an evil demiurge that the player has to kill.
I would have preferred if it went with a more alien morality route like the pre-DLC endings have, where the penitent one's death, deification and reinvigoration of the mother church is just part of the plan of the highwills and the moral thing to do in this world, where the whole extreme suffering due to sin/guilt is actually what everyone wants when thinking righteously.
But the Miracle by itself isn't bad, the high wills were the villans that manipulated it into a curse
@@ruchianox Which is the JRPG/Gnostic kill your god trope not the alien morality trope.
On personal basis, I just prefer the alien morality trope.
Its not alien morality. Its really quite simple. The morality is that Mankind is fallen from grace. Tainted with sin and thus is Evil. Thus is it good that Humanity suffers because it makes evil suffer. That's it. I am bad so it is good that I hurt myself. We are bad, but hurting others is also bad, so we cannot hurt each other but instead must convince everyone that we need punish ourselves.
Though to be honest, I agree that they shouldn't have broken the in-game logic. But at the same time, the game is called Blasphemous. It taking a stance against the doctrine is written right on the box. I thought that the original meaning behind the name was because it took inspiration from old Catholic imagery and deliberately showed it for what it was. Grotesque. Even before Wounds of Eventide I could feel a certain appreciation for the aesthetic while at the same time completely rejecting the message of what holiness is. I think the DLC just dropped the subtlety. The High Wills were not God. Just an artifact of mankind. There is a divinity of sorts in the Dream and the Procession but it is still unknown.
I can appreciate that Blasphemous does with Gnosticism what JRPGs do not. Those usually use that doctrine to just say god isn't real. Blasphemous does not. It leaves the door open to the divine. It also maintains the Catholic belief that we are fallen from grace. But not because of sin that we have inherited but because of our perpetuation of a sin that is still ongoing.
@@TheSaylesMan Still seems pretty alien to me.
@@ikengaspirit3063 why are you callong it alien? I don't understand
This game seems a like a good Ravenloft campaing. The Miracle and the Dark Powers just look the same concept. And the twisted one is the Darklord.
But why does tree man be sad and kill himself, is he stupid?
Yes
In the original ending, Crisanta takes the sword. Does that mean she becomes the next penitent one?
No, the official canon ending is the path the narrative follows, not any of the alternatives. The true ending can be obtained through the Wounds of Eventide DLC.
Watching this now, and i still dont understand a thing.
COMPLETE Story Explained - in 7 minutes. Yeah, right
🤡
So is the penitent one from the first blasphemous the end boss of blasphemous 2?
Nope, you play as the penitent one once more in Blasphemous 2. He just gets resurrected again.
The ending boss of Blasphemous 2 is just another “child” of the miracle that we must defeat to finally end the miracle for good in the true ending.
2 questions - What is the old procession? What is High Wills doing in the old procession?
My personal comprehension is that the old procession is the afterlife of Cvstodia. The "other side of the dream" as they put it. As if the high wills weren't sadistic and narcissistic enough, the only reward their followers get for a life of guilt and suffering is an afterlife where they only walk in procession in an eternal act of worship towards the high wills. It is a mixture of hell, heaven and purgatory.
I guess they hang outthere because it is the "most sacred of places, the most forbidden of temples", the best place to sit on their supreme power.
@@FreddyMontana69 Mixture of hell, heaven, and purgatory. Sounds like Christmas shopping at WalMart.
@@FreddyMontana69 actually that's quite close on how the bible describes haven, but instead of a eternal walk it describes it as eternal worship
Also the big beating heart embryo thing in the sky kind of reminds me of the ending of a movie called Angel's Egg. It also deals with sort of surreal christian religious themes and theres also giant embryos in the sky in the ending... would be neat if that imagery was an inspiration for that final scene
Is it live action or animated?
Thank you for sharing this. I’ll be sure to check it out soon.
@@TheInhumanOne Its an animated japanese movie, you can actually find both the subbed and dubbed versions in their entirety here on youtube. Its not as dark as blasphemous, more surreal and dreamlike. It was a collaborative effort between Yoshitaka Amano (the guy who did the very early artwork for final fantasy) and Mamoru Oshii (the guy who would go on to direct ghost in the shell). There's very little dialogue and heavy usage of symbolism so there's a lot of speculation about the movie's themes. The directors never been particular clear on the films message other than he was going through a crisis of faith during its conception.
does this game never stop giving surprises???? how tf do i get that ending?
You have to obtain the 3 wounds and visit Perpetva's tomb BEFORE fighting with Esdras.
@@TheInhumanOne damn... i already fought Esdras. I chose not to kill.
one more question... im doing the crystal quest... i cant do a double lantern swing... i need help. do you have a video for that?
Sadly, I beat the crystal side quest in the comfort of my bed so I didn’t record it!
As non native English speaker i don't understand the story even after this video 😭
I used to be a custodian lol. Now I'm from bartenderia now
what point is there for Crysanta to pray if she killed the high will ? cause if I'm not mistaken, the high will are.....god, righ ?
the High Wills themselves mention that they themselves have not been there from the beginning and that the continuous penance from the people, inspired by the works of the Miracle would have given them eternity
So they might not be all there is
The High Will and the Miracle aren't the same thing
I believe The High Wills are equivalent to the concept of the Demiurge from gnosticism. They are under the umbrella of "God" and yet not him. They are just tyrants with powers that are definitely divine in nature and yet not THE God. The Miracle appears to be a neutral or natural force that they control and from which they claim their power. So once they're killed, The Miracle is still there, just inactive, like a car with no one behind the wheels.
@@FreddyMontana69 Honestly hate it they went this Gnostic/JRPG route with the god actually being an evil demiurge that the player has to kill.
@@ikengaspirit3063 Yeaaaaah, I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little disapointed by this choice. The very dark, alien and cynical approach of The Miracle being this unfathomable and mysterious power was part of what made the game unique and now, a good bit of that is gone. Going from killing the pope to killing the demiurge God is definitly an overstep. It didn't ruined the game for me but it did retroactively change the flavor, that's for sure.
At least, this is the closest we'll have of Guts killing the idea of evil with his own sword.

Lol no worries. I know exactly what you mean.
why did the penitant one die tho?
The Miracle had revived the Penitent One. When he destroyed the High Wills, the Miracle also ceased to exist. So, its powers could no longer sustain him.
It's explained in the comic, The Kneeling, where after the Penitent One obtains the Mea Culpa, then returns to the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow church, he faces off Crisanta, who in the end kills him, then throws his body with his slain brethren. She mentions that, if the Miracle indeed chose him, he will rise up again, and they would fight again. By killing the High Wills, the origin of the Miracle, he essentially killed his life support.
still don't get it but yeah cool game

this is the kind of game that only highly religious people would understand. especially with the religious wordings this game carries.
Take that athiests?
What happened to the 4th high will?
He was abonmned by the others and is no threat in power to the other High Wills nor to Cvstodia. He turns against them after the Penitent One gives him back his vision (two eye balls hidden and protected by two enemie bosses).

EDIT: It's sad when people confuse contrivances and pretentiousness with good writing.
Nah its beautiful. Too bad people like you can't understand
So, basically, the entire story of Blasphemous is about divine beings being parasitic dicks who enslave the minds of human beings with infinite suffering and pain just to keep feeding their own existence through said humanity's hope, praise and belief of eventually getting "saved"/"forgiven" ?
Good idea, seeing how guilt is at the heart of every mainline religion. You can't make sheep praise you without enslaving them with the thought that they owe you something. Real nice.
In a way this may as well be the most anti-theistic game in existence. Even more then the original God Of War trilogy. Any god(s) who is(are) held in his(their) place on suffering, do nothing to eradicate it and at the same time ask for humanity to deal with it are useless and must be overthrown.
