I'm not a big fan of Metroidvania games but this caught my eye back when it came out. Something about the art style, enemy design and gore really intrigued me. I think it's brilliant. I'll be honest and say I had no plans to ever play it but hawt dayum it does look like a great time and it is something I might have to try out! Gives me Dark Souls/Bloodborne vibes. I'm glad you enjoyed it - I think the gameplay shortcomings seem minor overall. Really great critique bud managing to convince a sceptic of the genre to potentially give it a go is always a good thing :)

I was never a big fan of the genre but there are some amazing games that have drawn me into the genre to the point where I can now say I am a fan. Blasphemous is beautifully dark and definitely has some great dark souls/ bloodborne like vibes mixed in with dark religious tones. Well worth a play it's a great time!

I played a bit of it. The new penance system really changes the way you play. It makes some of the rosary beads almost pointless but some others get much better usage.
I chose the penance where you have life orbs instead of a life bar. And the defense beads don't really do anything since every attack deals the same damage. And the sword heart that boosts attack damage but lowers defense, just boosts attack damage now.
I didn't try any of the other penances, since I'm more of a melee player. But they seem to have they're own strengths and weaknesses.

I also was pulled into Blasphemous because of its hauntingly gorgeous visuals! I was scared to play it because I haven't played any Metroidvania before it. I was supposed to play Bloodstained before it to ease into the Metroidvania genre. But I went ahead with Blasphemous first. Needless to say, it kicked my ass so hard but I didn't give up. 92 hours of gameplay later, I still love it as much as ever and I love playing through new games of it and changing up strategies like changing the order of bosses, etc. that will give me replay value. And your review basically sums up my feelings towards the game. I love it!!
Fun random fact: there are names of places in my area that are called "Angustias Zone 1" and "Dolores" so I'm like "Oh, so this is Anguish Zone 1" and "Pain" hehe (since the Spanish Dub is irreplaceable and too perfect).

I've beaten this game 3 times and the last and final time I played it I took 33 hours. I don't know why I just always go back to this game. Something that most people don't talk about this game is that figuring out the quest items is like a hard riddle in the lore, it can be done but it's quite hard and time consuming but ultra respect for not making a pilgrimage easy.

Great video and breakdown my fam, I've always had this game towards the top of games I should eventually run through, but learning a little bit more about the background and the inspiration from Spanish culture makes me want to deep dive and have a wikipedia page or two open to investigate the meanings and references behind each enemy and boss. I too play indie metroidvanias for their atmosphere, not gameplay, but Hollow Knight managed to capture me completely. I found Blasphemous too clunky, the movement too rigid and the grabbing too finicky, but the atmosphere and visuals are great. In the end I didn't feel like going for the "good ending", though I'm happy to see that it's not an out of place good ending. As an Italian, It's also refreshing to see the influence of a southern european culture for a change, the game felt more familiar to me than any English, Northern or Eastern European work and I really wanted to see everything it had to offer but between the combat, the bugs (now mostrly fixed I believe) and the convoluted secrets, I ended up dropping the game. The "bad ending" is anticlimactic but also very fitting considering the real history behind the setting, so I was satisfied with that. I'm very glad you liked it, I was wondering if it was too niche with all the latin words and historical references, but the devs managed to intrigue someone on the opposite end of the globe so I'll call that a win. I hope they continue to make these kind of games, and you these kind of videos ;)

Thanks, mate! It's on sale on PSN right now and I was on the fence (to paraphrase Chandler in "Friends": can there BE any more metroidvanias?), but your in depth review sealed the deal. I am also a huge fan of (history of) religion and theology so I was like "Yay! Bring on that Catholic guilt, baby!" I would however make Gémino as a reference to St. Sebastian rather than Goya's "Saturn Devouring His Children". He's entrapped in armor and according to legend St. Sebastian survived the first time he was executed by arrows and had to be executed again. Then there's the homosexual aspect of St. Sebastian's passion explored in Derek Jarman's movie "Sebastiane" (1976, performed entirely in Latin with a soundtrack by Brian Eno). Gémino, translated as twin, asks you to recover oil so he may feel pain before his demise. In the movie "Sebastiane" there is an emphasis on the soldiers washing and grooming their naked bodies with oil. I don't know if this is canon, it's just my own interpretation and I haven't read any theories.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video mate and I hope you enjoy your time with Blasphemous because it really is so damn good! In regards to Gemino, the reason I referenced "Saturn Devouring his Son" was because visually that was the inspiration described by the developers in the artbook but I actually agree and I should have brought St. Sebastion up in the video because Gemino's story, lore and appearance do match up.

    • @ZombieDragQueen

@@MayorHairBear It's engaging to the point I'm tempted to look up the poetry/rhymes in the lore description to see if they're translation of Spanish poems/rhymes and the context behind them.
I didn't know the developers themselves named "Saturn..." as the inspiration instead of the obvious St. Sebastian. Could be that good old Catholic shame working subconsciously on the developers. Or maybe they had agnostic/atheist/Protestant art enthusiast game testers who were like: "That Gemino guy, really nice reference to St. Sebastian and the homoerotic undertones surrounding his legend. Gemino, twin, so he lived a double life afraid to come out as gay? What do you mean you don't see it? Are you guys deflecting? Is this a Catholic thing? Even closeted gay Japanese writer Yukio Mishima portrayed St. Sebastian in photo sessions." :D

I personally really like how Blasphemous doesnt explain the side quests well. You showed the one with the three books in the library of negated words.
These quests force you to really study the game and read the lore given to you to solve the puzzle. And that makes them more satisfying when you solve them. I felt like a genius when I finally got the solution.

Not a fan of the play forming, or the cheapness associated with trying to play this on a keyboard and nail some of those very sensitive play forming aspects, then taking damage or dying for no reason. Also, spikes....yet, the art and overall aesthetic is the reason why I suffer through the actual game play. It’s a world I actually would enjoy experiencing, as morbid as that sounds, it’s got all of my interests combined into one. If Dark Souls looked like this visually and thematically, then I would never play another game, to have a 3D open world aspect would be radical; but, that aesthetic I still can’t get over. Thank you for the review

    1) There's been a free update with the "truer" ending and more lore info since this video.
    2) It's not a Metroidvania, as it lacks ability/tool-gated progression. To devs' credit, they acknowledge. Also, doesn't make the game any worse. Just a technicality.
