- Even though I didn't learn how to do it while growing up, the RVH will change my game if I can master it now.

What is the biggest weakness in your game and what are you doing to work on it?
I be subscribed for 1 week now and I watched every single video that you posted on your channel ! It’s really helpful keep it up 🤝
When I go down I usually land on my knees but I’ve been trying to improve
@@Simon-ww8gi Like on the face of your pads?
Pretty much everything is a weakness for me except maybe my glove hand which I think is pretty decent. So maybe staying square is my biggest weakness
@@booman3138 Well that is okay and it actually good since goaltending is all about getting better. If you were perfect and never got scored on, the game would get pretty boring.
As a poor beer leaguer. I appreciate these free videos. We all definitely owe ya one
I found Dahan's videos yesterday - this guy would kill me on the ice I swear. Great work keeping up with him!
Always nice seeing these as someone that has never been able to practice outside of actual games. Thanks, Sam!
No problem :) I’m glad you found this helpful!
We finally have some ice time opening up next week so I have been enjoying you and Trav’s videos with the coached sessions...trying to shake off the mental rust before getting back out there. And I’m right there with you, being 31 and only attending 1 camp growing up, I feel I’m still catching up on certain techniques. Bad angle shots give me the most anxiety haha.
Great video Sam! The RVH will grow on you. I have a very hard time using VH. It is just not a comfortable position for me, so I understand where your coming from. Dahan seems like a great guy! I love the way he coaches. Keep working hard buddy!
Yeah, I grew up with the VH so it is much easier for me but I want to master the RVH... And Yes, Nick is a great coach. He pushes me to be better but also allows me to be me which I like a lot.
@HockeyDylan no, I struggle with the VH position. I'm decent using the RVH
Honestly you are right here. He's giving terrible advice to drop to the RVH that far out. VH or standing is a much better move.
We miss you!
Conditioning is free and will make every goalie better. When you’re tired or in pain maybe, everything is 100x harder. You can look super skilled in the first and by the the third look like a first timer.
Great video! There’s a TON of great tips there. I grew up playing stand up and just started dropping to butterfly. My biggest problem is I can’t do butterfly pushes once I’m down.
My tip to you is to make sure that your getting a very strong push and use your toe if you need to. Also make sure that your non push leg is flared out because it will let you get a harder push
Dahan is an excellent coach and you did great on those wrap arounds! Keep working like that, and you will be hard to beat.
Really good stuff here!
yeah, i remember learning the RVH. Makes a big difference if you are big enough. I don't do it much because I'm 5ft 7in and it leaves so much open up top.
All these videos are awesome. Except for the fact that I started playing goalie as an old 48 yrs old beer league/rec level , with bad knees and back, so I wouldn't have to work so hard anymore to have a little fun. 😂
Hope all is well
Honestly you have the correct idea on when to use the RVH. The reason you stated to coach is why NHL goalies dont default to it when pucks are below the goal line anymore. As you said there is a chance to score in the short side shelf if the shooter is real good. NHL goal coaches and goalies have gotten away from default RVH
I absolutely agree that you must not default to the RVH.
The exercise on display has a player driving from a flat angle and we want to seal the post. We discussed the importance of having the ability to drop and seal when a player is starting to drive towards the net or when they shoot.
The RVH is a great tool as it maximizes chest coverage which allows you to swallow pucks.
Watch the video we just posted on my channel for more insight.
Hey man what's up just watch your video that look really tough that looks like you're learning a lot at least you're on the ice keep up the good work and have a Merry Christmas
I scramble a lot on my butterfly pushes which leads to a weak push. If I’m not feeling the pressure, I have more time to load the pushing leg up which gets me across the goal faster than if I’m in scramble mode. So, the problem isn’t my strength, it’s in my head. Gotta stay cool under pressure.
Probably more about technique, when you are scrabbling you have a tendency to get get as good a push because you are rushed and don't execute proper technique as well. I.e. blade engagement due to leg placement or skate angle. Just my opinion from experience trying to learn power slides. Old school guy started playing goal in 1973 and still going but updating as I go along
Good stuff!
I remember goalie camps being taught skate saves.... God bless the 2 pad stack!
Tip: keep your head up when you do your c cuts and any other movement warmup
Have a question that is off topic but after a pick up game stick time who usually moves the nets for the zamboni?
Great vid! Subscribed.
Ball hockey goalie who transferred to ice recently. My skating and overall getting around the crease are my weak points in my game. Would love to know if you have a recommendation in the GTA for a goalie coach!
gotta make surer when you're pushing that you don't bounce up and down and you really lean your head into the push
hey are you going to upload more started watching your content and love it pls answer
Hopefully soon 👍
Dude great vid. Growing up a stand up goalie, I have had to try and retool my game to the butterfly style. So I totally feel you. I was never taught any butterfly techinque, so every time im on the ice I try and learn somthing new.
Today's goalie gear is one big cheat.... the butterfly style reminds me of the goalie in dome hockey....
FLY BUTTERFLY FLY..... BUTTERFLIES DONT 2 PAD STACK!! SLIDE FLY FLY SLIDE!
Ok, I think I'm starting to understand this rvh stuff. You basically have more rebound control. What about how you adjust your laces on your pads that go to your skates. I have 3 knots on mine. Will this make your rvh impossible?
Goat
The slide on those pads are holding you back
I love/hate the RVH. I gave up a wraparound goal last week because I went skate to post and he pushed it in. I probably rely on it too much because I'm short and my D isn't the best.
On wrap arounds I always try to go boot break/shin on post in the rvh so the shooter can’t jam the puck in.
Watch the 7:10 moment here. You must have a good anchor leg to push yourself against the post.
Great Vids - i Like it !
I hated my ccm eflex 3.9s.they slide horrible. Tried to figure what I can do . I used candle wax on the whole inside of the pad ,lightly rubbed it on. Now the ccms slide like butter. Dont care for the speed skin. Try the candle wax fix.
When your sealing the post at corner boards wouldn’t u want to vh or stay standing because it’s harder to push to ur feet from the post than from already standing up
I am close to 60, beer league goalie. I have never played organized hockey, so never learned these techniques. I am what you would call a old school, stand up style. I am pretty decent considering this, being rating near the top in my 2 old timers league with guys 35 and up. Since don't have practice time, how can I use some of these techniques, any suggestions to I prove my game would be great
This rinks sick.
Also, I know that rink, it's in Brampton isn't it?
What accessory do you have for the glass cam? Also are you ever worried about the camera lens breaking?
He has a GoPro supersuit. I have the same thing. It’s taken a direct hit before, multiple other hits and has been dropped more times than I can count. Camera still looks new
@@aac2500 thanks, I’ll have to get one.
Sam buddy, there's no way you haven't learned the RVH by now. It's an anchor of my game!
For real, the RVH is a must know. I can’t believe he hasn’t learned it yet
I don’t know how old you guys are but I’m almost 30. Growing up I was taught the VH as the RVH wasn’t used when I played competitive hockey 15 years ago. So I haven’t had any goalie coaches to help me with it.
@@ThePuckStopsHere Fair enough mate you know I just joke! I'm 22 and my hips have paid for the thousands of RVH's I've done. I like it because with good strength (and solid pegs) you have tons of explosive force built up in your anchor leg allowing you to be super mobile with proper technique.
@@ThePuckStopsHere
I’m right there with ya. I’m 34 and the only time we ever ended up in a similar position to the RVH was sliding across on wraparound attempts. It was never taught as a save selection or even as a technique to play low angle attacks.
I will say, as a shorter (5’10”) goalie, I’ve definitely found its limitations. Much more than a stick length away and there’s too much room up top against the shooters I play against to use it, even close to the goal line. Used appropriately, though, it’s a super useful tool.
RVH is overused. (Insert boos here). It’s taught at too young an age and has ruined young goalies’ hips. Wait until you’re in your teens before you get serious about repetitions, otherwise you’ll mess up your body. When you said that you would rather stay on your feet when the shooter is by the boards, I agree with you. You can overlap at your outer hash mark angle. The only place to shoot then is 5 hole which is an easy save at that distance and angle. In the RVH a player who’s not under pressure will easily put them in off your ear, even if you’re 6’7”. In close and under pressure is a great time to use it. You’re old enough to work hard on RVH repetitions but start off slow and get it right. You have a great coach who will help immensely!
My weakness is when im down in BF and need to move over the hole crease i tend not to do a slide. Instead i do Tv saves(dives) and its not energy efficient. I know i have time but my old habits from the 90’s is just second nature to me:(
....apples and oranges but I think goaltending was more creative and athletic before 2010's epically 90's!!! Today's goalie has gear that plays for him... fly butterfly fly
Hey Sam I love your videos
Hey man where have you been? Hope you’re
Ok
Hey! I am okay. I just haven't been on the ice in a long time so I don't have much to post. I heard I might be back on the ice at the end of July, so I should be back to posting soon!
@@ThePuckStopsHere awesome! I am glad you have been safe during this unprecedented time lol
@@ThePuckStopsHere Good luck with it, man, I haven't been able to play much, either, but I hope to see some more videos! We all miss them. Good luck!
can you do a video on how to break in a glove
Ive personally havent used the vh beacause i feel off balence and i open up holes like that, i have tried it, it just never worked out for me
My parents don’t believe in me for being a goalie but I love the game and goalie do you have any tips
Always keep your gloves up and work on stamina a lot. And always track the puck not the player. These are basic tips but it’s always good to remember them
Can I get a copy of Sunday’s game ?
Wow you guys were literally right next to my house
where is the dahan goaltending located
Toronto Ontario
I miss the beer league. I was looking forward to another season.
Are you still doing your camps I'd love to go to one. Please respond. Thank you
You would have to check DahanHockey.ca
@The Puck Stops Here thanks in the mean time I will watch your videos until I'm older and can attend your camp.
I agree that the rvh is an important technique but I also find that it is used too often and at the wrong time.
This rink reminds me of 5/3
What pads are those
What is RVH or VH? I’m an old school goalie…please pardon the lame question lol.
you ever gonna post again lol
That's exactly what I see in his last video he's weak in butteefly slide and not enough square in his knee
I stay standing against the post. No room from side anywhereeeeeee. Goalies make thereselces small and get snipped on
I agree see although they’re usually high level shots like Nhl but seen a lot of criticism lately in early rvh but also see how quick you can come off the post for the cross crease pass when your down too so it has its pros and cons
I have not bin on the ice for 3 months
Sam, where are you?
Where are you bro
You’re dragging your push leg behind and not sealing with it at all
Yeah, I realized that is something I struggle with big time.
@@ThePuckStopsHere it’s a small thing but an easy fix the less moving parts when you make a save the better you’ll also save more energy
Sry, but where new videos?
I learned this technique by just watching goalies do it... it kills your knees and ankles at first... once your body gets used to it, you will be doing without hesitation... can I say 1 thing I notice? I had the same ccms as well... loved em... but were bulky and heavy. Playing the new style relying more on your leg muscles lugging those big pillows around and they don’t slide... trust me. They don’t slide and aren’t meant for that type of play style unless you have those leg muscles... look into newer pads.... lighter really is faster. Why? Cuz your lighter and 2 the new technology on these pads really do make a difference. I went to optik pads and they are lighter don’t have the heavy leather straps. Just trying to be helpful cuz I went through the same thing... and I’m a beer leaguer as well so I’m not a young kid. But STRETCH those lower legs and hips and groin... A LOT! hope it helps and doesn’t come off as rude
*Except now you have to teach goalies not to abuse RVH. Because shooters are learning how to burn goalies from sharp angle shots to the top corner.*
really work on your conditioning, your a young man but you are working like me, 55 years. No disrespect, just some amateur scouting.
Tip: 4:12 don’t challenge the shooter that far when the shooter is behind you because it will be harder to get over
