I bought my first Leica, a M10 "Betriebskamera" (factory demonstrator/R&D camera), at the beginning of the year. My eyes, never great, haven't improved with age but I still find the rangefinder patch easy, fast, and accurate: I prefer it to AF. I bought a 1979 50mm Summicron-M with the camera. I've been shooting since 1982 and never really bonded with the 50mm until this combo. I'd urge anyone tempted by the M-camera to try it personally rather than dismiss it out of hand because, "My eyes are bad, I need AF." This is a highly personal thing and you may be surprised.
I have only one, the 1979 Leitz Canada Summicron-M I bought with my M10 at the beginning of the year. I bought my first camera, a Nikon FE, in 1982. I never bonded with the 50mm, though I never wanted to be without a fast 50, until the M10/Summicron combo. I wish I'd had it with me in SE Asia last year.
I love the current (for over 40 years now!) non-APO 50 Summicron. It straddles the boundary between classic and modern Leica lens looks. One of my all-time fav b&w lenses.
Props to you Matt. Most modern photographers would have a massive meltdown and panic attack shooting an entire wedding in manual focus. Much less with rangefinder focus which I doubt most of them have never even tried. Few could pull that off.
It's great to see someone really working a Leica rangefinder under challenging professional conditions. They are not easy to focus, by any means, even at the best of times. And "sunny 16" or "f/8 and be there" isn't always practical depending upon the conditions. To manage a rangefinder patch...on a moving subject...in lower light, takes a great deal of skill. #respect
I loved the m10 for weddings when I was using it. The one card slot always made me nervous though so after I had a small problem with an SD card I stopped using it. Focusing is easy if you practice. I got so good I could focus people coming towards me if they don't run.
Absolutely love my 50mm Summicron V4. Tested it against the 50mm Summilux ASPH and found the Summicron to be a little bit sharper, but the ‘lux had more character. Only issue I found with the ‘lux is that it blocked quite a bit more of the lower right portion of the viewfinder when you extend the hood out. Both are wonderful though!
There is no mention of flash and lighting here. Do you just use all available light.I am an old school wedding photographer who started in film days(1975) and then transitioned to digital and then retired. You current day wedding photographers are really spoilt with your choices.I believe I could still shoot a wedding on my Pentax Spotmatic 2 and without a lightmeter.I would be a bit slower though than how we now shoot. Thanks I like your channel.
I have just the Summicron 35mm f2 and the 50mm voigtlander f1.5 (amazing lens too!)

A little tip, Leica mainly worked on the housing and weight of the 50mm Summicron. The optical setup is still the same as version 4, available for a good 800€.
Thanks for the video. You need to get Leica SL glass. Many of the lenses if you work hard you can get for ~$3-4k on eBay. It makes a HUGE difference on the SL2!
I noticed you don't use any flashes. If so, how do you get through a wedding without them? It's not just a question of having enough light, but having the light in the right place. What about backup equipment? Do you have 2 SL2s? What do you do if your camera dies?
Great info video!!! I have a question...I am considering an upgrading from Leica SL to Leica SL2 or SL2s for wedding photography...Colors of SL are excellent. Do you suggest to change? If yes which models SL2S ol SL2. Thanks in advance Sebastiano from Italy
Hello Matt, great video. I'm curious about the M10. I own an SL and love it. I Will purchase and SL2s soon. With the M10 are you worried at all about the viewfinder alignment shifting over time? I would like to purchase an M10 but from what I understand if you accidentally bump the camera or simply over time the alignment can be off. Thoughts?
The weight of SL2 with Leica 24-70mm f2.8 should be around 3.9 pounds or 1.78 kg. I cannot imagine holding this set for wedding photography whole day. Since they are your wife's main equipment, is it not trouble her at all? I am considering to buy this lens so I would appreciate to have you advice and opinion. Thank you.
On paper it's an odd mix, the SL2 and the M10. But don't knock it til you've tried it, as they say. Money aside I'd choose the original SL over anything else in that sensor class (except the SL2!). Some applications like sport are probably best served with the A9, though. But most of the time I personally would choose the SL or SL2 if I owned one. All that is hypothetical for me, but anyway I enjoyed the video. 👍
Whoa! Those manual focus chops on moving subjects... Amazing! I’m far sighted so I guess like your wife, for anything that moves, I need focus tracking. I can only manual focus landscapes, posed portraits and the like. Interesting video.
Hi Matt, I have enjoyed your videos and channel for quite a few years now. I also really like your work, and your perspective on photography. The recent video about Winona Ryders work was fabulous :-) I did have one question though, I was wondering what you would be using for flash at weddings with your Leica SL2? I have recently switched to Leica and for next year‘s wedding season and I’m struggling to figure out what to do for the occasions when I need on camera flash. I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have. :-) Keep up the great work! PS, the whole concept of manually focussing at a wedding fills me with abject terror. I admire you for doing that!
Hey Matt, not sure you will see this comment but.. Just curious why you ended up selling the M10-P? Is the Rangefinder thing with Digital not worth it in your opinion? Or, do you still lust for a digital M?
Hi matt, I recently had the opportunity to buy a used M10-p + 50mm summilux combo. The Visoflex, would you recommend adding it for using focus peaking or is the focus peaking not worth it due to the relative low resolution?
My honest opinion on the subject - I used the visoflex once at a wedding and I did not enjoy the process. Resolution is good and the image is clear enough (everything could always be better, but no real complaints honestly) but if you rely on it, it takes away from the rangefinder experience and also the camera just becomes a lot slower. If you don’t have the visoflex yet, it’s Basically you shooting in live view mode. Shutter is open and sends the feed to either the camera screen or visoflex. If you listen to the shutter, you will be able to tell that each frame takes a bit more time and if speed is of the essence, then it’s better for you to just get faster with using the rangefinder.
The EVF has a half second lag, so you will consistently miss the critical moment. For example, if you’re shooting a scene and want to capture a person walking through at the moment they step to a certain point or pose, and press the shutter when you see them hit that point in the evf, the actual picture captured will show the person half step later, not mid stride, just past where you intended them to be, which is frustrating and makes the evf pretty pointless for anything spontaneous or movement related.
Ben Buxton Thanks for this input! That is exactly the insight I was looking for. If there is that lag between shutter press and image taken, then it is indeed not the accessory I am looking for.
I just need help. I have an SL2-s. So, from LUMIX G9 to a Leica SL system. was a big jump, sensor size alone has a big comparison. Now, how do I focus on the SL? It searches. Also, what program can open a Leica video? Maybe my laptop is old? I have a 2015 MacBook Pro.
Great video as we use to get from you. I wonder, do you know some focus distances by heart, e.g. if you are shooting with a 35 mm at 6 feet, do you know what distance is in focus + and - ?
Have you thought about trying any of the Sigma L-mount lenses with the SL2? IIRC you're trying to show less to gear stuff and more on the processes, techniques and actual important stuff, but I figured I'd ask since I'm interested in how the Sigma glass will compare to the Leica glass
Do you have your wedding work anywhere online or on instagram? Love your work and am a wedding photographer so would love to see the intersection of your street/landscape portraits and your wedding approach. No problem if not :).
Matt, great video, can u tell me how do you find the 47 megapixel post processing in Lr? Do you need the latest version of Lr? I have stayed with Lr6 and never upgraded.
Hi. I also have the SL2. Would you tell me your video settings? I find the contrasts much too harsh, especially when I film people. I've already completely removed the saturation and contrast in the profile. Am I doing something wrong?
I'd be interested to know how the SL2 with Lumix 50 performs in low light dance floor situations. I find rangefinder shooting in this area a real crapshoot.
I really don't understand using an SL body with non-Leica glass. Leica is Leica BECAUSE of the glass. I use M lenses on my SL and it is like having an M body with amazing EVF.
I believe it is ergonomics and user experience with a leica body. Clients won't see the difference from a Leica vs Sigma lens. As long as the non leica lens don't fail and delivers the required images, the extra character of leica lenses can be ignored. Just satisfies us as photographers though 😆🙏🏻
Solid kit. No huge gear bags. I use the OG SL with an L mount Sigma and an M typ 262 for weddings. *I've added the Leica Q for insurance. Leica batteries crush Fujifilm and Sony.

Summicron 50 is one of my favorite lenses. I never liked 50mm as a focal length until I got that lens, now I have four.
I have a vintage one. (1959) I do retro style photography so it works well for me.

Cheers to you. After moving from Canon to Sony 5 years ago, I just dumped all my Sony gear for an M10 and Q2. Loving it.

We are very spoiled these days! I use manual focus most of the time but that's using live view and no way comparable to a RF.
man, everybody has some kind of little blindness because of the screen, it's hard to focus on a telemeter without focus in your eye yahaha
Not to mention the... Gulp.... Only 1 memory Card!!!! lol

The sl2 battery is half the price of my camera.
Oh well.
It hurt when I stocked up for weddings and video shoots...
I'm sympathetic. I have a Q2 which uses the same battery.
first
Willem Verbeeck WOW, talk about king shit!

Black belt with the rangefinder. Bravo.

Matt what strap is that on the M10-P, looks very nice.
Off topic a bit but the super fast Nikon Z mount 58mm s 0.95 Noct would be a killer bridal lens.
Just got my first rolls back from the lab taken on my 50mm summicron; I'm in love with the sharpness, but I'm still getting used to the focus ring.

Do you use protection/clear/uv filter on your Leica lenses or just shoot "naked"? Thanks, Mads
Did you use manual focus with the SL2? I heard the autofocus is not the best on the SL cameras
Matt, great video,
can u tell me how do you find the 47 megapixel post processing in Lr? Do you need the latest version of Lr? I have stayed with Lr6 and never upgraded.
Was there a reason why you did not get the MR?
I thought Molly had her own Fuji body. Did you guys sell that too? I forget.
Why don't you use canon eos r anymore?

How are you doing Matt?
might have been answered in the leica CL video but did your wife try the leica Q2 seems like a nice non rangefinder camera
Yummy lenses!
Great job, I am going to sale my fujifilm xt3 so I can get a extra battery
His 50mm summicron cost the same as my entire canon wedding gear
