Edinburgh and tram info: I have relatives over there and was lucky enough to get to Newhaven on opening day, the 14th of June (I think the original tramway opened on the 14th of June 2014). The trams started about midday and I made the third tram. Edinburgh trams take bikes which is useful to know. Newhaven is worth a visit. It's an ancient village consumed by Leith. There used to be 30 shops and 6 pubs but it was almost completely demolished, suburbinised and rebuilt in the 60's. There's some rather interesting and singular locals who have turned the backcourts into a community garden where they grow figs, cherries, rhubarb etc., and have done amazing stuff to pretty up the village. They turned the old school into a community centre with an active Man Shed. Beside an ancient tree there's a rather haunted cycle shop where one of the best wheel builders in Scotland has more ghosts than customers. An ruined church is opposite so perhaps that explains things. Another church is a climbing centre. There's a separate electric bike tour shop along the street. The houses by Newhaven terminus are on reclaimed land. The spot you started from is the slipway where Mulberry Harbour Pontoons for D- Day were being built in a 1943 photo. They are on the stocks with another one floating and tied up at the pier which is now a car park. it's all quite filled in. If you nipped into ASDA, you'd be out at sea. At Picrady Place there was a statue of Sherlock Holmes but he got moved for the tramstop. Just after Picardy Place, on York Place there are the well worn points where the trams changed direction and lanes when York Place was the terminus. The point rails are visibly stepped with 10 years of wear as the wheels ground round from the point curve onto straight track. At Haymarket, Haymarket Yards is ex railway land beside platform 0. There's offices with the tramway alongside. As it gains height to pass Haymarket MPD, there's a tramway bridge beside the railway bridge. This tramway bridge has concrete castings to take a junction and aim tracks up the Roseburn Cycle Path, Walkway and Wildlife corridor. This never happened, partly due to the huge over budget- ness of it all and partly due to the huge amount of protest because of the walkway's popularity. Bankhead is on the old Sighthill guided busway. I think the 21's used it. They put all these nice handy bridges and embankments in for the busway (parallel to the railway) which was ever so convenient for a tramway a few years later. At Ocean Terminal, I did a double take because behind the Britannia was a CalMac vessel, well out of place as CalMac serves the Clyde and Hebrides. I was told by some steamer nerds in CalMac territory that it was the mv Finlaggan, which serves Islay from Kennacraig, in for overhaul.
Was there two weeks prior to opening at Leith thinking why there were no trams only realised once we got back to London that it was opening shortly after. So good to see it's now up and running.
Brilliant final episode of the I visited series (for now) Nick, I still need to do the Edinburgh trams myself and after that, it will be all the UK metro systems complete for me. Those boats sure were big and yes, who doesn't love a good park?
If you're ever interested in getting a good shot of a train in future, there's a location by the national gallery and one by waterloo place which are best for train shots outside the station
Hi, Nick, thanks for keeping producing my favourate re-run transport videos. After you've done with British trams, you can just hop on train from St. Pancras and cross the English Channel and visit Lille, France which has trams and metro. I suggest you could do I Visited Lille Trams video, and perhaps film The Least Used Metro Station in Lille before Geoff ever does.
Edinburgh used to have two tram systems in operation :- let me explain ; Edinburgh itself ran a cable -car system but outside of Edinburgh ,Musselburgh ran its own electric car system which extended east to Port Seton and west to Joppa where you had to change from Musselburgh’s electric trams to Edinburgh cable cars -I think the whole length of track ,in total of the 2 systems ,was 50 plus miles.
6:26 • It’s pronounced In-goal-stin Park & Ride. Scottish place names are weird, I have never seen a single person outside Scotland pronounce Auchtermuchty or Milngavie correctly. Also, fun fact, I spent a lot of time in that park when I was at primary school.
Edinburgh looks amazing and im loving the castle and the views of the railways and the tram looks like a great network to travel on and i woudnt mind visiting Edinburgh one day brilliant vlog
Another great video. I can’t wait to ‘scratch’ the new extension in September 2023. I heartily recommend Ocean Terminal and the Royal Yacht Britannia, they also have an excellent Tea Room onboard that do gorgeous tea and scones with a magnificent view across the Firth of Forth.
Hello Nick, I've been loving the content you've been putting out! If you ever get the opportunity, I would really recommend checking out Vienna (and maybe Austria as a whole, it's very impressive). In the city you can ride on all trains, trams, underground and busses on a single fare, there are probably many cool places to do some train-spotting too.
I didn't get to visit Wien Südbahnhof ! I was even living in Graz at the time when it was still operating but only found out that it had been replaced when it was too late. I've visited Hauptbahnhof many times and even went for a look round Westbahnhof.
The fact that you can get a single ride for £2 except to/from the airport which is £7,50. When I visited Edinburgh, I made the decision to rise between Picardy Place and the airport and back to Princes Street as I enjoy riding all froms of transport. The extension just under construction at the time (2021). I will go back there at some point in 2024. Public transport is also free for all under 21s but was not in place at the time
Welcome to my home city. Use the trams daily to commute to and from work and just take them for granted. I am glad the extension is finished loooooong overdue! Another cracking video. Cheers again, Nick.
That’s sick visiting my hometown, I like one stop before at saughton so you’ll be happy you didn’t get off there as there’s no much to see, the park you went too is usually quite rough
wow I had no idea the extension to newhaven was complete until I saw this! PS you cant say that youve travelled on every tram in the UK if you haven't ridden the great orme tramway
Ingliston Park & Ride is a quite useful P&R for me, I've been there plenty of times. Great road connections, when coming from the north, it's easy to get off the motorway, park at Ingliston & take the tram into the centre. Free parking, saves driving in the centre which is often a challenge and parking is quite expensive there. Perfect solution.
You mentioned the expense of a ticket to get to the airport... I could be wrong here but I believe that a plusbus ticket for Edinburgh includes the full tram network also? So that could be a neat way to cover it on the cheap (even cheaper if you have a railcard!!)
If you're in Edinburgh for at least 2/3 days and you're making a return trip to the Airport you're as well buying a week's bus pass for £22. My main criticism of the trams is that they have not extended the daily/weekly capping from the buses to the trams as well for £4.80/£22 yet. I haven't ridden the extension yet although have walked most of the extension between Leith and Newhaven in 2021.
Bankhead, right next to my old college from 20 years ago, the park you were wandering was just cut grass when I was there, I remember them planting the trees! Lol
The big boat you saw that says Tallink on it has been there about a year, it's MS Victoria I an Estonian cruiseferry which has been chartered by the Scottish Government to provide temporary accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.
those tracks that you saw at the beggining of the video were the remains of the old tram tracks that used to run down to lieth and that was part of the motivation for bbuolding them nice to see you in lieth
Well one thing you can say is this, there was Sunshine on [The Port of] Leith when you visited. Lovely City is Edinburgh, just a shame about Jenners burning down.

Great vlog Nick. I’ve done a few stops on the Edinburgh trams a couple of years ago but not done the Newhaven extension.
Hi Nick mate that was an excellent video and i really enjoyed watching you travelling on the Edinburgh trams. Thanks for filming this excellent video.
If you're ever interested in getting a good shot of a train in future, there's a location by the national gallery and one by waterloo place which are best for train shots outside the station
Also Newhaven harbor down south near Brighton
You and Nat just gave me an idea to go on trams as well like Edinburgh Trams ETC.
The visit to the Leeds rubber tyred trackless system was the highlight!
Hopefully, that will be the next system?!! 🤔
Every time I have been to Edinburgh more stations. When I first went in stopped at St Andrews square 😂
we are moving to Edinburgh in September looking forward to it

Edinburgh is amazing, great video as well, hope your 1st experience wasnt as bad as mine... ended up paying more than i should 😂
Thanks!
Thank you!
Missed the floral clock in Princes Street Gardens currently featuring the Flying Scotsman.

The Shore is a good place to stop off on a nice sunny day
Great video. Well done pronouncing ‘Picardy’ like the locals.
Was good to bump into you by chance while you were filming this 😂
You too! 😂
Yeah seeing you guys in a Co-op of all places 😂

Brilliant video sir!

The trams are awesome (in my opinion)
Try the Glasgow underground
Another great video. I can’t wait to ‘scratch’ the new extension in September 2023. I heartily recommend Ocean Terminal and the Royal Yacht Britannia, they also have an excellent Tea Room onboard that do gorgeous tea and scones with a magnificent view across the Firth of Forth.
newhaven harbour? thats down south 😂😂
Edinburgh has an area called Newhaven aaaaand it has a harbour. 🤔😂
It’s in Edinburgh🤣 I live 10 mins from it
Yes it is, Edinburgh is in the south!
Well england ends at the fourth road bridge

I love the trams! It’s also such a bonus that I get to ride them for free as I’m registered blind. Thanks for coming up to Scotland 🏴
Excellent!
wasn't the castle once a volcano? (before it was built)
Nice video!
Welcome to my home city. Use the trams daily to commute to and from work and just take them for granted. I am glad the extension is finished loooooong overdue!

I mean the park seemed to have nice views, we didn’t want to go to the play park as it would have been a bit creepy 😂
@@InkItOut yeah that’s true there is some nice views but yeah the part bit is a bit rough
Oh they built the extension did they
wow I had no idea the extension to newhaven was complete until I saw this!

I have actually! Like... When I was about 7 years old 😂
3:57 I see that footbridge is still closed. 😒 That was the case when I filmed this 2 years ago:

"That's a pretty big boat!" (1:32) Yes, that's the one they're using to house Ukranian Refugees on...

Did you forget about the Manchester Metrolink?
It’s actually would be West End 2:05
You mentioned the expense of a ticket to get to the airport... I could be wrong here but I believe that a plusbus ticket for Edinburgh includes the full tram network also? So that could be a neat way to cover it on the cheap (even cheaper if you have a railcard!!)
I checked that on the PlusBus website, but sadly it still excludes the Airport meaning you have to pay the ludicrous tram fare still.

make a video from london paddington toplymouth (or exeter st davids or crediton pls)
I find it a bit cursed that theres high back seats on a tran network
bruh I was on those trams two hours before this video was uploaded
i never thought id ever see you at sighthill park 😂😂
Neither… 😭 sad because the trams go nowhere near East Craigs that would’ve been funnier imo.
Beautiful trams! That high-pitched beep is extremely annoying, though!
Bankhead, right next to my old college from 20 years ago, the park you were wandering was just cut grass when I was there, I remember them planting the trees! Lol
That’s very cool! The trees were pretty cool walking through
Mathematicians across the world excited to see a "parabola" tram!
I was indeed 😃
You never been to Nottingham trams have you
amazing! you're in edinburgh, lovely to see you in the area
Great video as usual Nick! Am I the only one who thinks Natt is cute?
Nah, I think she is too 🙂
Isn't the DLR a light rail system?
It’s a light metro
@@m--a So are the Glasgow subway and Tyne and Wear Metro. Both of which are part of this series.
The big boat you saw that says Tallink on it has been there about a year, it's MS Victoria I an Estonian cruiseferry which has been chartered by the Scottish Government to provide temporary accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.
I went on every stop of the Edinburgh trams when I went
Not that hard🤔😂
Visit bus systems >:)
those tracks that you saw at the beggining of the video were the remains of the old tram tracks that used to run down to lieth and that was part of the motivation for bbuolding them
nice to see you in lieth
Ohhh right!
Welcome to Edinburgh Nick!
Yay baot
The series has been completed!
Did you do Seaton?
Well one thing you can say is this, there was Sunshine on [The Port of] Leith when you visited.
Lovely City is Edinburgh, just a shame about Jenners burning down.
Natt Badley?!

The I Visited series isn’t complete… I visited France when??
You’ve got six metros and 26 tram networks to visit so get on with it! 😂
Oh god..
I saw Jen on the move 😊 on Edinburgh 🚊 back in June 17 th 2023
You have missed off Seaton Trams.

Can Nick Badley like or hreat this comment please :D
