How Joe Montana survived some of the hits in the 80s and early 90s, I will never know 😮
He used to say that after he retired - he woke up from bed and felt like hell. Especially his knees, if he is hurting now, he does a good job of hiding it.
I always say that there is no way that Brady would play as long as he has if he were allowed to get hit the way that these guys were.
Joe is the GOAT; tougher, cooler, clutch!
During that game, it became obvious that they were winning the Super Bowl. I was 12 then, but I remember all season knowing it was special. This game though, was a complete dismantling of an excellent team who had been such a roadblock for the Giants until that point. I had so much respect for those 49er teams, who were a pleasure to watch unless they were playing the Giants. To this day I still have a soft spot for the 49ers, unless, of course, they’re playing the Giants.
The two championship seasons facing the Niners in playoffs...Montana just got demolished. Holy moly did Montana take some shots in that era....this one, the Leonard Marshall hit in '90....just a tougher game.
That's why montana is the real Goat.
He played when QBs got absolutely crushed.
Brady automatic flag if he's touched.
I wish I could stand you on my Roof to scream that at the top of your lungs to these millennials who run their mouths about Brady... The MOST REFEREE ASSISTED Quarterback considered one of the Greatest of All Time
If that hit happened today he probably be kicked out of the league today.
@@sammygaudino8906 it was a clean hit. even by todays rules, 100% clean, 100% devastating. That turf with barely an inch of padding is what really caused the injury; THAT'S ON THE LEAGUE!! The working conditions that they subjected their employees to
@@fairmounthotelhotel2711 THANK YOU!
Ha ha ha ha ha.........NOBODY even mention Montana's name anymore as being the best ever.....lol.....bye bye fanboy.
When football was a man's game. Montana never complained about that either. Great hit on a great QB.
Montana was hospitalized with internal bleeding after this Burt hit.
I saw that hit live on T.V. and I swear to this day Montana probably has 64 engrained on his chest 😖
I remember watching this game as a kid thinking that Burt killed Montana with that hit.
I never get tired of seeing the two GOATs (Montana and Brady) get absolutely blown up by the Giants defense.
AMEN to that!
Not much happening now.
Hit a guy like Brady like that today & see what you get. They'll lock you up and throw away the key. I miss real football.
This would be a legal hit no flag in today’s game what you yappin’ about Boomer
Me,too, brother. Today, Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum would be charged with assault and battery every time they hit somebody!
Montana can’t hold Brady’s jock. Brady is the most sacked QB on history. Learn some things.
@@TJEversII Sacked? You mean touched and the whistle blows. Watch the film genius
Good Lord some guy in who has never played a thing in his life is calling football players soft. What a joke
Post Leonard Marshall's hit on Montana in the 90/91 NFC championship game and you have the two best hits on a QB ever.
Agreed , but I.M.O. , BURT'S HIT SEEMED TO BE MUCH MORE DEVESTATING & VIOLENT.....JIM WAS THE MOST DOMINANT NOSE TACKLE IN THE GAME FOR THOSE FEW YEARS.....
James Jackson Marshall’s hit ruptured his spleen and stomach, fractured his throwing hand, broke a quarter of his ribs, and all but ended his career
@@AlabamaNationalChampionsOf2024 IT'S HARD TO DISAGREE WITH YOU -- THE COMBINATION OF THOSE 2 HITS ON JOE DEFINITELY LED TO THE END OF HIS CAREER......
@@JamesJackson-xd7jq Both were like loud gunshots but the hit by Leonard Marshall in the 1990 NFC championship game was louder plus it was like he killed Joe Montana and him laying motionless it changed NFL history for a number of teams
That was a cheapshot, ending one of the greatest QB carreer is somothing that you as fan or player should not feel proud.
I don't believe there is a better hit against a QB in an NFL playoff game, than what Jim Burt delivered against Joe Montana, in that 86 NFC Divisional.
Leonard Marshal on Joe cool in 1990 absolutely speared him in the back with his helmet which would be an illegal hit today! But you’re right, this one might be better.
@@Dza231 I'll tie that with Lawrence Tailor's famous hit vs Thiesmann Monday Night Football.
@@gorkskoal9315 playoffs
Dirty hit, try hitting him when he’s got the ball! Hit a defenseless QB. Joe won 2 Super Bowls after this, water off a ducks back.
@@hardtimesbbq5265 You sound like a true 49ers fan. It was a clean, great hit. You don't have to hit the QB why he still has the ball. You are allowed a couple of seconds. What Montana accomplished after this game, is irrelevant.
80's Niners-Giants games were the best
I remember this like it was yesterday! What a great hit!
1:47 the only time I've ever seen Jerry Rice jogging. He didn't want none of LT lol.
Rice wasn't even close idiot use your eyes
Nasty hit should of been penalized. If montana was still in niners would win superbowl 25
Hit was legal back then. No spearing with the helmet or going for the legs. Just a hit right on the numbers.
I miss those times so much.
I found it's weird that Jim Burt didn't mentioned that the Giants beat the 49ers in the 1985 playoffs 17-3. They've already proven that they could beat the 49ers in a physical fashion.
In today's game Jim dirt would of been ejected , fined , sued , 10 years in prison .
If that hit happened in today's Roger Goodell National Flag Football League Burt would've been penalized, fined and charged w/ assaulting a commercially bankable QB.
No player has ever been criminally charged for actions on the field during a game, to my knowledge.
I have been a Giants fan for 40 years. This is one of my favorite plays ever. Burt hits Montana & Taylor intercepted and ran it in for the T.D.....while Rice watched & never made a real attempt to tackle Taylor. You see him give up.
I would have done the same. Tackle LT? Let me check my contract.
Screw the Giants 🤷🏻♂️
@@XxXNiceXBoyXxX I just watch them play football...but go ahead & give it a shot if it makes you happy.
Rice wasn’t even close he had no shot
Rice made a business decision...
When football was football and a mans man game.
And a lot of those men men died too soon.
I remember Joe Montana hosting Saturday Night Live and they kept playing that clip during his monologue
And Burt went on to win a super bowl with the 9ers and Montane a few years later. Go 9ers!
This makes one really rethink the GOAT talk.
In terms of the beatings that QB's took back then compared to todays era, sure.
When Montana wasnt winning Super Bowls he was usually getting knocked out of playoff games.
The Giants knocked him out of the 1986 playoffs and the 1990 NFC Championship game when the niners were going for the threepeat.
Later Montana takes the chiefs to the AFC Championship game and the Bills give him another concussion.
That's 3 postseason games right there where he was carried off with concussions and or broken bones.
its something that the Bradys and Mahomes never had to face in their careers
Great photo, LT running with the ball, Rice behind him. LOL 1:47
Imagine that in 2020. Lol
Even as a Giants fan, I still felt bad for Montana after that hit
In real time you really get a sense of how violent that hit was. Montana could barely get off the field.
Tom Brady would never have survived a hit like that.
Nah dude, plus Jim would be suspended for like....ever
And I know that’s a legal hit but today’s NFL....
FACTS……..
7 rings
@@nathandodge665 No way he would have gotten 7 rings after taking a hit like that. The refs throw a flag anytime a lineman even taps Brady.
Now a URP (unnecessary roughness against the passer) penalty became illegal the following season
Call me crazy but I don't think anybody could beat that 86' Giant's team, they were really, really good.
Tom Brady would've said " HELL NO " !!!!
This is when football was a real mans game. Before it, and society, got soft. Good memories 😆
Ok..now that hit definitely was badass and a trainwreck...but now that I've gone through dozens of 70s 80s games ...and watching QBs and how rough it was...people are exaggerating it...yes there were some heavy hits like any year..but most of these games Montana is highly protected and there isn't even that much roughness after he throws the ball...also recievers got open alot better back the...very similar to the college level...and now since the late 90s and beyond corners are faster and right on top of recievers more...QBs are getting hit by bigger guys...more consistently now...again of course their was the super studs back then but there wasn't as many...
@@hawks7775 exactly people swear you got stabbed every down
Why do players of that Era look like they're in their mid 40s? Or is it just me?
In case you didn't know they're trying to keep people from getting CTE if you don't like the rules then don't watch
@@hawks7775 Well, players had some standards. If you watch the Raiders and Tatum, they were pretty ruthless on defense. Steelers were brutal at times, so were the Giants. NFL today is bigger players, but they still hit you hard when they were smaller guys.
Hey Joe, did you get the license number of that truck?! 😂😂😂😂😂
But Jim burt would than eventually go to San Fran
Just a little side note that LT was covering Jerry effing Rice on that play.
Why are people celebrating this sure it won them the game but that play could have been his last
Great Great Rivalry, #70 hit on Montana 90 Championship game, Greatest Giant Hit, Dismantled 49ers for shot of 3 peat Go on and win the SB, Great Year !!!!!
This is literally,atempt of murder...
Thats why Joe Montana is the Goat.. Not Brady
Joe Montana football legend Jim Burt 1 hit wonder
'' rubber legs'' Montana. lol
These were just not the same 49ers who took the Super Bowl just two years before. I already figured after the Bears were eliminated in the first round that the Giants would be going to the Super Bowl.
No doubt NYG fans miss these great teams today.
CLASSIC
So this is a video celebrating injuring someone on the field? Thats a bad look.
Naw. That was mans football. Today’s football sucks compared to the time of Ronnie lott and LT blowing fools up.
@@lilbrother45 and they have the degenerative head trauma to prove it. Hope your enjoyment was worth the life long physical and emotional issues they have now
@@lilbrother45 anyway, my point was actually that the NFL constantly puts out the message that they care about player safety on one hand, and puts out stuff like this on the other
Rule #1: Life is not fair - despite what you were taught in school or by the corporate media.
Rule #2: See Rule #1.
Today's society has the mental toughness of Charmin.
@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 cool. Not sure what that has to do with the above comment, but thanks for chiming in.
In the Big games like this! Teams had to knock Montana outta the game to win! The Giants & Bills know!
This made no sense smh, bill was a master at that time with talent defense. Richard Seymour was a beast too on the line that’s why Peyton was running for his life at times. Bills giants shut out Joe Montana in divisional round. Don’t compare others to Peyton manning just remember this Peyton took 4 different head coaches and different assistants coaches to 4 superbowls won 2 that’s impressive
Montana had just come back from what many thought would be career-ending back surgery earlier that season.
Joe was only a skinny guy but among his many great attributes, toughness was right up there
Weird to see an NFL team’s official page celebrating an injury
Where's Leonard Marshall (oo ) (oo) ( oo)!!!??!!! No#70 has never looked better!!
In a lot of ways, it's amazing that Montana was as successful as he was considering how fragile he was.
As much as I love watching Burt destroy Montana, I've never forgiven him for his hits on Hostetler in the Conference Championship Game four years later.
He wasn't fragile; replay those and you'll notice he's getting slammed. Most would be leveled and unable to get up from that type of brutality. That's why they change the rules they want to keep the quarterbacks in the game
Everyone in the world is fragile when they take a monster hit like that.
Fragile? Imagine taking hits like this all your career
Such a great moment. One of my most favorite Giants games ever taking SF to the woodshed. Love that during the 49er dynasty they ran into the Giants dynasty 3 times in playoffs and got bounced (1985-86, 1986-87 and 1990-91). There will be no threepeat !!!! LOL
They bacame teamates and won a Super Bowl together
Forgive my memory, but didn’t a cheap shot take Simms out, then “somebody else is gonna lose a quarterback” and Big Jim lowers the boom?
The Giants are the 49ers Kryptonite. 86, 87, 90, 2011.
That Burt hit on Montana was one of the most vicious hits I have ever seen in the NFL. Just brutal. Montana needed hospital care for internal bleeding.
Those were the days back then for sure! #HardNosedHardHittingSmashMouthTrashTalkingFootballToTheHardestCoreOfAllHardCores :D :D
back in the day the QB's were hit. they are not hit anymore and you really have trouble comparing todays QB with the ones back in the day that played with diferent rules. plus the CB could hit the WR all the time except when the ball was in the air. game is totally differenent now.
Where is the turkey Jones hit on Terry Bradshaw? Or the Jim Burt hit on Joe Montana
Burt finished his career with e Niners and won a super bowl with them
My God, you would be kicked out of the league today doing this.
dallas would have beaten the giants that year if danny white didnt get hurt
If he did that to Brady years later he would be thrown out of the league.
That hit was 100% clean..the helmet wasn't even needed.
Montana GOAT. Case closed.
Leonard marshal did in 1990 to Joe Mantana
Back when it was football.
cheap shot: suspendable offense
But knocked Montana out of New York with that hit
When LT caught the INT, Jerry Rice was only 5 yards behind him and knew he couldn’t catch up to LT
That’s something people overlook today about LT. His speed.
as a 49ers fan, this was their 2nd worst loss after the Vikings next year.
Big Blue Wrecking Crew!
Dirty hit, irony because he made a dirty hit in ‘90 championship vs Giants Hostetler as a 49er. 49ers didn’t use any trick plays to beat Giants, never had to!
WRONG! It was a CLEAN hit. No shots to the head or the legs. Search your feelings - you know it to be TRUE.
That;s gotta be the hardest hit ever put on a QB,. Sent Joe Montana to the hospital. The good old days!
Remember hearing the radio call of this moment in the car while my mom was in the store. Not a Giants fan, but always hated the 49ers. This was one glorious day when I could actually root for the Giants as the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
What was the genesis of your hate for the 49ers?🤔
Would’ve been flagged for roughing the passer in today’s NFL.
There’s a great early NFL productions video about that Giants ‘86 season “Giants Among Men”. Still have it on VHS!! Find it on RUclips.. it’s freakin’ awesome 🤩!!
Lt 35 yards downfield in coverage. Complete linebacker
That play sent electricity through all of us Giants fans watching the game! I think I was in my friends basement, drinking beer and whooping it up!
I was at that game and it was absolutely unbelievable how great that Giants team was.
Montana probably still has the number 64 ingrained on his chest. One of the most vicious (legal) hits I've ever seen. 😖
#70 on his backside years later.
@@jonmolina948 I cringed when I saw that Marshall hit. 😖
Never realized how much Jim Burt looked like Jay Leno.
Burt seems to forget that the Giants beat the 49ers in 1985.
The way football should be played
That was the only way they could win, take out Montana!
Nobody was beating the Giants in 1986.
Plus the Giants beat the 49ers 17-3 in the 1985 playoffs so it wasn’t like they never did it before.
I’ll never forget that hit!
This was when men played instead of coddled babies. Could you imagine Mahomes getting hit like that? His mom would tweet for days.
If you don't like the rules then don't watch
@@nathandodge665 Um, I can still watch and have my opinion.
You are 100% right. I have no respect for Rodgers, Mahomes, Brady, or any other quarterbacks who have played in this wussified era of the NFL. They wouldn't last four weeks taking hits like Aikman, Simms, Montana, and the rest took every week in the 80s and 90s.
@@essbe7158 As someone who has watched the NFL since the late 1960's - I endorse your post...👍
🤣LOL at his mom would tweet for days. After Brady tore his ACL, I believe he was never hit hard after that. You could see the players letting up when he was sacked or hit.
Glad they changed the rules; that kind of brutality plus the Marshall had decided games unfairly against someone standing there. That's why they did it would prefer to see the quarterback stay in the game
Might as well outlaw tackling then. That would be fitting in today's participation trophy era.
I LOVE my Giants!!!
There are some things you never forget in life that is one of them and I still at the age of 55 still wear his jersey......he was bigger than life Thanks 64......
One of my proudest moments as a decades-long Giants fan!
Not much to cheer for lately. 😢
The greatest day of my life. Like growing up in the late 70's just melted away on one Jersey afternoon.
Classy, NY Giants. You guys won this game 49-3 and went on to win the Super Bowl, but what you choose to remember here and celebrate is injuring Joe Montana. WOW WHAT A HIT! SO COOL! KNOCKED HIM UNCONSCIOUS AND PUT HIM IN THE HOSPITAL! Come on, man.
Seriously NY Giants....while you're at it go ahead and post a video with the title "Lawrence Taylor SNAPS Joe Theismann's leg!!!" Now that was a great one, right? Ended his career! Super super classy. Keep up the great work!
"WOW WHAT A HIT! SO COOL!"
You're damned right.
The Giants in the 1980's and very early 1990s were one of the most physical teams to ever take the field in the history of the NFL. There offense was more intimidating than most other teams defenses (watch Mark Bavaro highlights for context), and the Giants defense could at times be absolutely brutal. Those were Giants trademarks in all four of their Super Bowl Championships, especially the first two. Of course Giants fans are proud of the big hits they made.
Ahh quit . When you wipe away the tears and take another look at the play, you'll notice it was a CLEAN HIT. No shots to the head or the legs..
@@dantesinfernopurgatory7826never said it wasn’t a clean hit. My beef is with the bloodlust. Y’all won that game 49-3 and you’re still celebrating a hit that knocked a hof qb unconscious and sent him to the hospital. You reap what you sow. Keep enjoying Daniel Jones.
That Giant team was the tuffest, most physical team in NFL history. I use to love it when they played those high powered offenses like the 49ers with Montana and Rice and beat the hell of them! The Giants always punished Montana in those championship games. Jim Burt's hit on Montana was merciless 1:25💀💀💀 then LT took it to the house 1:42.... Lenard Marshall hit in the 90 NFC championship game ended Montana's run in Sanfrancisco. They broke him up pretty bad in that game
The ‘85 Bears were tougher/more physical. They beat the living hell out of their opponents. Shut out the Giants and Rams in the playoffs, then annihilated the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
My 2 favorite plays in Giants history:
#1 - 1986 - Taking out Montana
#2 - 1990 - Taking out Montana
Montana made a great crash test dummy
Today the NFC East sucks as bad as the West did then. Just no team playing good enough to be relevant and healthy like the 9ers did. Giants were the real team of the 80s. No cared what the 9ers or Skins were up to. Eyes were on the Giants and the big Tuna.
Only in the eyes of Giants fans
@@nathandodge665 And the eyes in their opponents soaking in the ice tub after the game. Win or lose - opposing teams paid a physical price when playing the Parcells/Belichick era giants.
