EDITOR’S NOTE: This story and interview were completed before Colby Ryan was arrested and charged with sexual assault.
IDAHO FALLS - A three-part series examining the Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell murder case is set to be released on Netflix this month.
“Sins of Our Mother” explores how Lori Daybell “spiraled downward into religious fanaticism and paranoia to find herself and her fifth husband standing trial for murder,” according to Netflix.
The story is told through the eyes of Colby Ryan, Lori’s oldest son, and a trailer for the documentary series begins with a tense phone call between the two. Daybell is in jail and asked Ryan how he’s doing. He replies, “I’m not good, Mom.”
Home videos of the family in happier times are shown, and Ryan opens up about his mother facing murder charges for the death of his siblings, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow. A grand jury in Arizona also charged her with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection to the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow.
“Colby has been dealing with the loss of his mother, the loss of his brother and sister, the loss of Charles, who he considers his father - how do you do that? How do you put one foot in front of the other? How do you reconcile yourself with that?” Skye Borgman, the director of the documentary, tells EastIdahoNews.com.
Borgman has been working on the project for over two years. She’s directed “Abducted in Plain Sight,” “Girl in the Picture” and other true-crime documentaries but says “Sins of Our Mother” is different.
RELATED | ‘Abducted in Plain Sight’ filmmaker opens up about Pocatello-based documentary
“There’s a lot of information I feel we don’t have, and that’s not always the case with other stories I’ve done,” Borgman explains. “This is still a story in motion. I don’t even know if once the trial is concluded that this story will be concluded.”
Borgman says one of the goals of the docuseries was to get past the tabloids “blasting cult mom type headlines” and explore how the events have affected Ryan and others, like Barry and Janis Cox - Lori’s parents and Ryan’s grandparents - who also appear in the series.
“Sins of Our Mother” was nearly finished and ready for release last year, but police in Arizona released a large file of text messages, photos, video interviews and other details made public for the first time. Borgman met with Netflix, and the decision was made to re-work the series.
“At that point we said we have to get this in. There was so much more information there that really gave a lot more insight and specifics to, I think, Lori’s decline, the methodology behind it and to the actual messages that were going on back and forth,” Borgman says.
Borgman says she learned a lot about Lori Daybell working on the project but still doesn’t understand her and isn’t sure if anyone ever will.
“I still have a really hard time understanding how she could have gotten so extreme in her beliefs to have killed or at least had a hand in killing her children,” Borgman says.
Watch our entire interview with Borgman in the video player above.
‘Sins of Our Mother’ is set to be released on Sept. 14.

She has a RUclips channel and is very active in this case and trying to get justice for Tylee's father Joe Ryan.
Whom she believes is also a victim of Lori's murder streak.
Sadly she lives in New York and wasn't able to play a huge role in Tylee's life while she was growing up.
But Tylee most certainly will not be forgotten.
In light of Colby's recent arrest. She actually has shown him to be not the moral character we've been led to believe.

I’m bothered most about the comment Lori’s mother made that Justice has been done bc Lori will not be getting out of jail. I cannot imagine ever thinking Justice could ever be served losing 2 grandchildren. That attitude of staying on the surface & not feeling deep is very telling & gives insight into prob how Lori Vallow is able to keep motivating bc if you don’t know how to think deep or feel deep and weren’t taught to go there I think it would be easier to not feel the depth of devastation that they have caused. as an American grandmother I appreciate your compassion for the family and their victims because I share it to my very depth. but we must not forget that the ideology that people clinging to the idea of a cult following mother is the most important aspect of this case when it comes to the United States of America and what is happening in the name of someone claiming a religion as their freedom. we need to accept that people decided to keep their distance from her including her own family because we are so geared to not poo-pooing someone's religious freedom. I am not blaming her family or under the impression that nobody cared or was worried and did try and make efforts to connect with her. but the tragedy here is freedom of religion. because freedom of religion translates to the freedom to walk into a library and learn to read and read anything you like and make it your religion whether it is the Bible, or a scientist, or a maester of library science. we now are experiencing Waco sympathizers, we are tolerate Scientology, and we tolerate abducted in plain sight and their religion. but whoever said that you were free to create a religion because you chose to read the deplorable or a false history that there is no excuse for with the internet at our disposal.

The judgement about Colby here is just sad. Can you even put yourself in his shoes??? He has lost his ENTIRE family. He has had to come to believe & process the things that his mother did. He may be an ADULT, but I’m 63 & I sure as hell wouldn’t be ‘over’ it……EVER. After the loss of his whole family, he ends up separated from the ONE person he has. He is scared of getting divorced & all that that entails. Another HUGE loss. The couple has had to be under so much stress I’m sure we couldn’t imagine. He snapped. Who are WE to judge?! I do not believe he is like his mother, I think he is a victim of his mother, his church & his extended family.
His behavior is NOT in any way excusable, but let’s have some compassion for people. Especially before we know facts!

I pray she gets what's coming to her because of what she did to her children, to Charles, even Tammy Daybell - this case has dragged on long enough. Even though we feel she is guilty I wish we'd let the courts prove her guilty beyond any reasonable doubt before releasing documentaries which may be deemed as not giving Lori a right to a fair trial because she could claim her jury was biased.
