Mother shares 'chilling' experience of asking Lori Daybell where her children are

- IDAHO FALLS -- Ursula Berliner will never forget her encounter with Lori Vallow Daybell. It was short, on an airport shuttle in Maui and an experience Berliner describes as "chilling."
The Oregon mother had just landed in Hawaii with her husband and daughter last week when they made their way to pick up a rental car. As they boarded the shuttle, she recognized Lori and Chad from stories she had seen in the news. Lori’s children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and his sister, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, have not been seen since September.
"Chad was really recognizable but Lori looked a lot different than the pictures I had seen," Berliner tells EastIdahoNews.com. "She was dressed in black, heavy clothes and it was 80 degrees outside. She had big bags under her eyes. I had eye contact with her and she just looked like she felt untouchable - like she knew people would recognize her and it didn’t bother her."
Berliner said her heart "sank to her legs" and she was concerned the Daybells may be on the run from law enforcement. After getting off the shuttle, she tried to call police but she couldn't get a cell phone signal. The couple went inside to rent a vehicle while Berliner remained outdoors with her family.
"I had just read that she had been talking to a friend and told her all the speculation around them was media hype that she was waiting for it to die down," Berliner recalls. "I wanted to have an exchange with her where she knew it wasn’t just the media and the police who were watching for them or cared about the children - that there are parents all over, just like me, who see her and are watching her. People who aren’t going to stop looking for the children."
Berliner says Lori looked right at her through the glass and Berliner mouthed the words, "I see you. Where are your children?"
"I’ll never forget the look on her face. She kind of shrugged and raised the corner of her mouth and eyebrow and she wanted me to know she knows where they are," Berliner says. "I really wanted to say something but it was a scary situation. There’s a lot of death around the case and my husband was really nervous about me making a scene."
Berliner and her family got into their rental car and drove away. She sent her photos to the Rexburg Police Department and detectives referenced them in court documents as proof that the Daybells did not have Lori's children with them.
Two days after Berliner's encounter, the Daybells returned to Kauai and on Thursday, on two counts of desertion and nonsupport of children, resisting and/or obstructing an officer, solicitation and contempt.
"Part of me was hoping I would see them again. I just don’t want them to fall out of view but also I hope I never see them again. It was just an awful exchange with her," Berliner says.

Richard, your years battling for your daughter has given you a level of compassion that many people will never have. I know logically that legal systems don’t provide justice, and often not much punishment. Cancer has been present in my life, and I have sometimes wondered if the terrible grief and pain brought by cancer could be given as punishment in cases like this, would it be right. In cases where children are killed, deliberately, I would agree with putting those murderers through four or five rounds of chemotherapy. Prison is too good, it’s not enough a punishment. Child murderers get off pretty lucky.
Normal people get divorced! They don't kill all of their husbands and kids or family!
So, in your mind they are killers. Presumption of guilt eh? This is why the burden of proof is on the prosecution. sure, they may in fact be guilty of wrongdoing, but due process is important. The public is always so quick to deem someone guilty based on media speculation. Stop being a sheep. Prove guilt, not innocence. Now that you've tried this case, could you please share your evidence that she killed her husband (her brother did it, but hey..) and kids?

@@jasontheron7655 Her brother said he did it but that doesn't prove that he wasn't put up to it by Lori, or that he even shot Charles. This case has so many holes and inconsistencies that it is crazy. I would guess most people commenting are not from Idaho, and would not be on a jury for the trial. We are allowed to speculate, which is what people are doing. You may want to skip reading the comments. Peace.

Thats the best comparison I've heard....we loose something and won't rest until I find it ....if my kids were missing best believe time wouldn't matter and no stone unturned. Doesn't matter, if she really is deep into a doomsday cult of "Ten Cities" she honestly believes she's doing the best for her children and we are all gonna die soon, anyway. For that I have hope the kids are alive, just hidden in some out-of-grid facility - a farm, a cabin or a settlement - being cared by other members of the cult. That's why she's so calm and shrugs when asked where the kids are, she might even not know herself.
Hope the inmates in her jail that just wish they could hold their own kids beat her senseless.

So sad. I’ve heard of cases where parents have hidden their children, right or wrong, in order to “protect them”. But with murder, unexplained deaths, cults, life insurance money, and the fact that the Daybells have lied regarding the children’s whereabouts, hope that the children haven’t been harmed is dwindling.
Do most people including the police think that those precious kids were killed? It just breaks my heart to see this. I have 5 children of my own and would die to protect them as all of you would to protect yours. So this just blows my mind. What reason would they have to hide them if they are alive and well?

As a mother though I know something has to be very evil in any mother that could kill her own children. To kill anyone when it's not in self defense is just crazy to me. Had there been an exchange like the photos this woman would had got it on video. She clearly just wants attention and didn’t do anything to help police or the victims family. At least she sent the photos on to police before putting her little story online

My mom and dad (divorced) both lose it if I'm missing for 30 minutes! They freak if I'm not home when they come over and I didn't announce I was going anywhere! It's not overbearing really because in today's world they are just determined to make sure I don't get trafficked or hurt and they will hunt me down if need be lol! Its also about my babies! My kids are now 38, 30 & 29 and for the most part I still know their routine and where they are. I think that's pretty normal. They know Mom was a freak about their safety growing up and still am lol

Watching this on 4/27/24, months after Lori was found guilty and given life, thank god. It is so sad and poignant to hear this brave, lovely woman, who faced a demon eye-to-eye, saying how she hopes the children are still alive and safe. None of us yet knew the unimaginably horrible truth. Thank you, Nate, for your continued great coverage of this mind-bending and heartbreaking case. I’m in the U.K. and stumbled upon this case. It’s absolutely heartbreaking and I’m checking for updates daily. How can a mother ‘misplace’ her children and act like nothing is wrong? The death around both of them and her unwillingness to explain the children’s disappearance is terrible. As everyday passes my hope that the Tylee and JJ are to be found alive withers further x

Sure, any parent, grandparent or people with a reverence for human life is going to be emotionally impacted by this gruesome story. The police and the law have to play by the rules but Chaddy Boy and Lori do not. This will all catch up to them eventually. When it does, I can imagine every Court TV type media will be crammed into that courtroom.

There are LOTS of parents in the world not like you at all. My father hasn't spoken to me in more than 5 years now, despite me trying. He didnt even respond, much less bring himself, to my getting married. I got no congratulations, nothing, radio silence, even though I sent them an invitation. Many many people should never have children and society needs to stop.pressuring people into it.

The police have all the video. Pretty sure there's a camera by the door. They just can't release all their evidence to the public. That's not how investigations work.
@The Thinker- Yup. Probably gunna be awhile before we get anything of substance. So much came out the past month it just stalled after Lori's arrest.

The very vast majority of us would fall on a sword for our children... in a heartbeat! With that said, I can always spot an Lds mom. Not just bc there's usually what looks like a very long, adorable trail of ducklings behind her, but the WAY they interact with their children & the WAY their children interact with their children. It's as though they LITERALLY check in with Jesus before every syllable leaves their tongue & every movement is commenced. That's something to emulate. As deeply as this has affected all of us, I can hardly Imagine how this is tearing up the LDS mom's who were her friend, her sisters in Christ & who loved her children almost as if (or AS) their own and, of course, the blood relatives of these precious children. I'm Christian and though I do not ascribe to the LDS doctrine, I KNOW & am GRATEFUL that they lean entirely on Jesus our Messiah.

@Ms Bliss I haven't heard about a trust fund but in the Court Documents filed by the prosecutor to support keeping the bail high it states that the current husband got at least $440,000 from his wife's life insurance. You can read these docs as they are public record. It also stated that the husbands average account balance was just under 140K for the last month.
I think after she got away killing her husband allowed her to think she could get away with killing her kids. May those kids Rest In Peace 😢

Alice Mazzucco she also got rid of JJs service dog. They went on a trip to Yellowstone and Tylee was photographed at the entrance but hasn’t been seen since. After that she came home and fired JJs nanny, took him out of school permanently saying she was going to homeschool him, and then he was never seen again. THEN Lori and Alex (her brother) put all of Tylee and JJs belongings into a storage unit in rexburg and she’s since abandoned that storage unit and recently all the items were turned over to police.
He wasn't getting his medicine for a while. Charles wasn't getting it filled either, apparently it hadn't been filled since Jan 2019, from what I read. Lori must have gotten it filled in September or something.

Just to let you know...Tammy Daybell's body was exhumed December 11th from the Springville Evergreen Cemetery in Utah and they are still awaiting the autopsy reports. Even though they can't be called to testify against each other they can do it voluntarily and I think it's just a matter of time when one of them throws the other under the bus or both do.
