What Alex Cox revealed days before he died and the unusual massage he gave his wife

- The day after Alex Cox and Zulema Pastenes were married in Las Vegas, he offered to give her a massage.
It was Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019 in the middle of the day. Cox, a massage therapist, had never given Pastenes a massage and said they needed to go to Walmart first to buy a large plastic drop cloth commonly used for painting projects.
They purchased the item, returned to their room and he spread the cloth over the bed. Pastenes remembers lying down and quickly falling asleep.
“I was really, really (relaxed) - like when you’re trying to wake up and can’t,” Pastenes recalled. “I was thinking, ‘Why am I so relaxed and can’t wake up?’ I was in and out and could hear him talking and I was like, ‘Who is he talking to?'”
Pastenes said it sounded like Cox was chatting with somebody on the phone in the bathroom. When she was finally able to wake herself up, she asked her new husband who he had been talking to.
“He’s like, ‘Nobody. I was talking to myself,'” Pastenes said.
She took a bath and then suggested to Cox that they should watch a movie together. He was doing something on his phone and acted “super quiet.”
“Alex is usually joking and he would find a way to turn things into a joke. He was always making you laugh but he said nothing for the rest of the evening,” Pastenes said. “I asked if he was ok and he said, ‘I’m just tired.’ The fact he was quiet and said nothing - that’s so not Alex. Alex is not quiet.”
Pastenes explained the unusual events of that day to detectives from the Rexburg Police Department and Fremont County Sheriff’s Office who met with her for two hours this past April in Arizona. The interview, which you can watch in its entirety at the end of this story, was videotaped and part of several recordings, documents, videos and other files released Wednesday from the Chandler Police Department.

The department has been investigating the death of Charles Vallow, Lori Vallow Daybell’s fourth husband who was shot and killed by Cox in July 2019. Lori married Chad Daybell four months later, weeks after Chad’s wife, Tammy Daybell, died in her sleep.
Lori’s two children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan, were found buried on Chad’s property in June 2020. The couple is facing multiple charges in connection to JJ, Tylee and Tammy’s deaths, and police reports suggest Cox was involved. Lori has also been indicted in Arizona for conspiracy to commit murder in Charles’s death.

The detectives met with Pastenes and her attorney Garrett Smith to follow up on earlier statements she had made to them in regards to Chad, Lori and Cox.
“At the time (of the massage), I had no question about it,” she told them. “There was not enough oil for a drop cloth (and) now I’m like, ‘Why would you necessitate a whole drop cloth all over the bed to give me a massage?’ That doesn’t make any sense to me at all … Maybe I’m just a little too crazy because of all the stuff that’s happened, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking that who was on the phone was Chad and Lori and that was supposed to be my last day.”
Pastenes doesn’t remember eating or drinking anything unusual that afternoon and said it was the only time Cox ever gave her a massage.

@@MissMolly3377 considering the circumstances of his death, I doubt he killed himself. That was an exceptionally bad way to go, also poisoning is a highly unlikely method statistically. If he was suicidal, he’d probably use a gun.

I can't get over how many times she repeats herself. Seems like she is using a distraction method used by guilty people being interrogated.
Repetition can come from nervousness, mental disorders, and programming behaviors. That’s a big spectrum. That said, the level of repetition threw some red flags up for me, as well. She also displayed somewhat inappropriately jovial and dramatic behavior. Seemed like she really wanted them to agree with her. I find that odd, but I’m not in her shoes. She said she didn’t add Alex to any life insurance policy. But maybe Alex took a life insurance policy out on her without her knowledge?? Can people do that? Also, they might have just been trying to get rid of her to tie up loose ends. She knew a lot.

I think that for whatever reason, Lori and Chad wanted her dead and Alex wouldn't do it. He prepped everything but didn't go through with it. And maybe in Lori's eyes that signaled a rebellion on part of Alex and her and Chad decided he must go too. And so when Tammy's body was exhumed they hurried up and killed him the next day

There is an interview, (on RUclips), with a former follower ofJulie Rowe. She also spoke of a massage with oils. She expressed a similar experience as a result of a massage given by another member of their community.The woman explained how she felt 'strange,' as if drugged during the 'therapy.' It was eerily simillar to what Zulema described.
So some sort of drug absorbed through the skin? Wonder if LE located and tested Alex's massage oil.? That would explain her coming to and fading out of consciousness: unpredictable dosage.

No. The implication was that he had Zulema already ON the drop cloth so that should there be blood or such it was an easy clean up. It wasn't for later use. It was so that he could kill Zulema while she was getting the massage. I know it's hard to hear her at times, but you can see clearly it devastates her to think of it but she clearly thinks that was the case.

@@joncrane7661 They married November 29 2019. Tylee was killed Sept 9th and JJ was killed one day before Tylee's 17th birthday Sept 29th. Lori and Chad were already married as well. I believe Tammy's body was exhumed on December 12th and Alex died the next day.

After seeing the texts between her and Lori, then this interview? I totally agree that Zulema was telling half truths to look like she was an innocent potential victim as well. I think she was way more involved, and knows much more that she was telling the police. And I'm struck by how much law enforcement actually knew. If they had acted faster, after Charles was shot, maybe those poor children and Tammy Daybell would still be alive. I feel they have some part in three, truly innocent lives being lost to these crazy cult members

I had a short acting anesthetic when I had a thumb dislocation and they had to put it back. When I was waking up from it you can hear everyone talking in the room. The jokes everything but you want to talk and you wanna wake up but you can’t wake up to still hear everything so she was definitely drugged

Well I've lived enough years to recognize that Alex purchase of a giant paint sheet was not for a massage, it was meant to pick up any dna from a murder. For whatever reason Alex couldn't go thru with it and he had a change of heart. Probably Chad and Lori being far away from him having the time of their lives while he's left to task another life snuffed out at his hands had something to do with it. Lori telling him to do this in person while in the moment and Lori telling him to do something over the phone is two separate experiences. I think this is the day Alex really started questioning this whole thing. Soon after this he tells MG she doesn't want to know where JJ is, he tells Zulema he's either a man of God... or not. He tells Zulema where $ is in case anything happens to him. All these things tell me he was really unsure of this after Chad and Lori split off. It came clear the "mission" wasn't as important. Chad and Lori just wanted to be together without and spouses and Lori's children were just in Chad's way and he manipulated everyone to believe it REALLY wasn't the original people in the bodies, it was demons so no harm done. Alex was most likely extremely terrified as he was dying to know he was about to face ultimate judgment. I think he knew at the end.

Basically she felt off and couldn’t wake up. At the time she felt like it wasn’t a big deal, but after knowing all that Lori Chad and Alex have done, she realizes that very well could have been his plan to kill her. Having the bed covered in plastic to maybe hide evidence & giving her a massage to have her in a vulnerable state. He definitely could’ve been trying to kill her but she woke up & the plan backfired…or it could’ve been his plan to get her away so he could talk privately to Lori/Chad about something they didn’t want her to know about.

It is my understanding that, yes, one can take out a policy without the person’s knowledge in some states. Anyone update with respect to their state???
To take out a policy you have to be in some sort of responsibility situation for or dependent on that person. You can’t take out a policy on just anyone. I can’t take out a policy on my next door neighbor, unless I can prove I am caring for them or responsible for their medical bills or funeral. And the insured person must sign it. In fact, that person must actually take out the policy. So no, unless a person signs anything placed in front of them, or someone forged a signature, a policy can’t be taken out in secret.
In the past you could take out policies on strangers without their knowledge. But due to abuse this is no longer allowed. You have to be related....and they have to be made aware. Though some have faked that and brought in a ringer to claim they are the relative. But I think they have to sign something.

No, neither did Alex. They would have killed her for her knowledge of their conversations, beliefs, etc. She was effectively a loose thread to Chubs and Lori and, via her conversations with Alex, it was apparent to Alex that they were looking at him in that way too.
