    I had students who would wear headphones in the hallway or during times I wasn't teaching. I understood it was for anxiety and I was fine with it. School is suppose to prepare you for the real world and be sorta draconian. You need to overcome your personal problems if possible😢 as long as it doesn’t physically hurt maybe the mental strain will be temporary but we don’t know if you’re coddled. We live in a capitalist society and esthetics are the first thing seen and judged. Even if you’re 10% more efficient managerial figures would still prefer you looking more engaged sans 🎧. If you realize you’re a Super minority that can’t function normally due to sound sensitivity get discreet earplugs so others don’t think you’re rebellious or being disrespectful

      @@kimwhatmatters4085No. No, in fact, we don't have to conform to ableist standards, especially when they cause us pain and harm. It is ridiculous to insist that we hide ourselves for the comfort of normies.
      And like she said, noise hurts! Thats not an exaggeration. Overstimulation is physically painful. And for people like me with chronic pain, it can make our chronic pain worse too.
      And of course, if we have to deal with processing overstimulation, we're gonna be less productive. Its much better to throw on some ear protection and get work done than to mask and pretend everything is fine until we can't take it any more.
      So the next time you see someone wearing noise cancelling headphones, or stimming, or whatever... just move on. Don't say anything. You don't need to have an opinion. It doesn't affect you. Just move on. The world will be fine.

    • @MossTunic
      @MossTunic Год назад +19

      @kimwhatmatters4085 harm like this doesn't create endurance & strength to overcome these pains, it causes deeper distress that becomes harder & harder to stabilize from.
      we teach people to endure & feel shame & guilt for trying to find relief/ avoid sources of pain, but don't give them the tools & space to recover.
      the "real world" thing is an excuse by the rich to keep doing whatever they want despite how it hurts the broad population below them. life can be fair, life can be soft & caring & loving. but so many people have been brainwashed to believe that these current levels of cruelty & pain & unfairness & apathy is normal. it's not!
      the world can be a gentle place. we have to do things to change the power imbalances & make space for these changes though.

    It honestly means a LOT that you talked about your overstimulation and wearing headphones to counteract it. I’m autistic and I struggle with auditory overstimulation, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been made fun of or called rude because I wear my headphones literally EVERYWHERE. Thank you for normalizing these things 💕

    • @funsizedi88
      @funsizedi88 Год назад +31

      What most people don't realize is in an autistic person's brain, noises are literally translated to pain. I'm not sure if it'd everyone on the spectrum, but my bonus son had that issue, and he had Aspbergers(sorry if I spelled it wrong). Headphones were his best friend and I made sure he had extra pairs in his bags/coat pockets and 2 over the ear sets so he had one for home and one for school. Just doing that helped him to improve his ability to focus in school, and he was happier at school. So even tho I'm not diagnosed/om the spectrum, I am empathize, as my anxiety can make noise overestimating, even painful, at times. I'm so sorry that more people can't be human about things that are a type of normal human behavior. I mean, I think it's normal if a noise hurts your ears, then you want to cover them!

      @@funsizedi88just FYI, Asperger's is no longer recognized. All autism is on the same spectrum, so it is all called autism spectrum disorder. Hans Asperger was a Nazi so it was never a great name to begin with but that's not the reason for the change. The distinction never actually existed in the first place and calling it a different name is harmful because it implies that those with "Asperger's" were superior to others with autism. A lot of people who were given that diagnosis aren't aware of the change, so this is not a criticism of you, just a heads up because it is considered offensive and hurtful.

    I’m from the Midwest, and occasionally my mom and I would venture a state over and visit a little town that’s known for its haunted hotels & shopping. In the town center, circa 2014 - there used to be a “Pink Zebra Boutique” & I still remember how overwhelming the smell was when I walked into that place. Think butterscotch mixed with cinnamon and something super floral. Anyways, the owner was working that day & she sold all of the wax melts + things like Miss Me jeans, “Live Laugh Love” T Shirts & other things that were very “I live in the Midwest & it’s 2014”. I haven’t thought about this in years, but looking back I remember her grabbing my mom and taking her to the side while I looked at the clothes and things and asking her where she was from, where she worked, and other personal questions. I was around 14 and oblivious to MLM’s but I know for a fact she was trying to pitch an MLM opportunity now, only because of how rude she was to us when my mother apparently said “No thanks” and told me we were leaving.

I only go into an office a couple times a week now at my new job but they are way more understanding and there’s more people like me on my team so the lights are dim, there’s no music playing and we have more of a cubicle style. I genuinely think their scent blend/recipe concept is fun (mix different scents to make your perfect custom scent) - but that can be easily replicated with non-Pink Zebra wax bead products and it incentivizes their consultants to buy a lot of scents.

    I have a sad story about this one. 7 years ago I worked in a phone center with a woman who also worked for Pink Zebra. She was this kind and funny woman that lived with her aunt and uncle in the country. She rented the back office/home part of the families barn because she couldn’t afford her own place. The kitchen was a van that was fused to the building somehow. Anyway, she brought me over to swim in the family’s pool next door after work, and we had to go change in her place. I walked in and instantly was hit with 1) the stench of prettified dog poop and 2) some sort of sharp candy smell. This poor woman had been selling Pink Zebra to get the discount to scent her own home. Because she never picked up after her dog. And not just all over the house, but there was a bedroom she didn’t use. It was her and her husbands before he left her … so she absolutely refused to ever go in that bedroom. Instead her tiny dog used the entire bed/room as his toilet. And she attempted to cover up the scent with Pink Zebra wax. I’ve never forgotten that sickly sweet but rotten smell associated with a deep deep depression and pet neglect. She was a nice woman she just had so many Heath and mental issues and someone took advantage of her desperation by selling her an MLM. She almost tried to get me to do it but I had already heard of anti MLM.

It was fun meeting new people and having parties but we constantly do “recruiting” and I didn’t feel good about it. I stopped actively selling and now I have about $10,000 in merchandise I’m stuck with. The quality of all the products have severely deceased in the last 4 years and the prices have increased. I highly suggest don’t sign up, it will suck your bank account dry. You don’t make much money selling but costs you a fortune!

After a few times of that I was done. And that is super scammy.

    I currently have a storage tote with some Pink Zebra samples in it. Back in 2015 I was working in a seasonal job as a storage manager. As my role came to a close my boss (district manager) pulled me aside to tell me she was going to quit working for the company going forward as she and her daughter had started a small business the previous year and it was doing really well. She asked if I wanted to come work for them. I asked what it was and she said "my daughter and I make wax melts and candles. We're to the point that we're bringing in enough money to turn it into our full time jobs and we're looking to hire some new people to help sell for us. I know you went to college for web design and we'll get you a login and you can help promote us on social media. Right now we'll pay you commission based on what your sales bring in. You'll get 30% of any purchases that result from clicks on your content." Being unaware of MLMs and needing another job I said sure. After my job ended at the store she called me and told me she was going to send me a link to their site, but right now they required all new employees to buy $50 worth of product/samples so they can test everything and truly appreciate what they're marketing. So I, being naïve thought 'oh ok sure.' I did it. I was making little to no sales of course, she was constantly breathing down my neck telling me I had to work harder, network more, and make sure my family knew how important it as they invest in this with me. There were other "employees" she'd introduced me to who had rooms of their house dedicated to these products. One woman literally posted about how her husband was threatening a divorce over the amount of product she was holding and how it was taking up the space they intended for a future nursery but she wanted to do this to build the future for their future baby. These were people she told me did 'in person marketing' for them and would buy product to resell. Something she wanted me to do but I never had an interest in doing. They regularly did 4am EST product drops on limited products with only like 25 available and she'd encourage us to log onto the website to purchase them for resale, gifts or ourselves because they were limited edition. After a few months I gave up and just blocked her and anyone else I was getting emails from with the company. It wasn't until a few years later I learned about MLMs and realized what I was a part of and that she and her daughter obviously didn't own the business they were just more mice in the wheel.
