So I like using the samurai as a dexterity fighter, and I typically play an elven race to benefit from the triple advantage given by the elven accuracy feat because I can get advantage on all my attacks which makes it really fun to play. BTW the true power of triple advantage doesn't come from the increased hit chance, but rather it comes from the roughly 14% chance to roll a natural 20 per attack meaning when I multiclass into a hexblade warlock to roll a critical hit on a 19 or 20 it means I have a roughly 30% chance of rolling a critical hit per attack which if I lay out a 5th level eldritch smite means I do a stupid amount of damage.

Great work as always. I always have samurai on my radar when making a new character, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I’m pleasantly surprised how tanky they can be.

I've seen a high Tier 3 Warforged Samurai in online Westmarches type of server. The sessions would usually have just 1 combat encounter and Fighting Spirit was landing so many critical hits.
It's a cool sub-class, a bit limited. I wouldn't go for Samurai if I was gonna go pick Great Weapon Master due to the bonus action dependency, but I don't think it's bad either - as you said, temp hitpoints heals and the damage mitigation via Heavy Armor Master feat really makes this tankier than most fighters out there.

I think samurai is very under rated for sure.

@@RollingWithAdvantage I would say the Fighting Spirit being a long rest feature is a bit weak, but on the other hand, I don't know if any group can handle the recommended 4-6 encounters per day other than strictly roll-play groups who kick doors and kill orcs all day so, in that regard, it's definitely more powerful than it seems.

I’ve never seen a group have more than 2-3 encounters before a long rest. Most games may have 1 small and 1 larger encounter before a long rest.

      @@RollingWithAdvantage Yup, same here.

For a 3 hour session, we usually have 2 to 4 encounters with one large encounter per session.
Current scenario excepted with no rests and a guaranteed level up at the end of it.

I played a goliath samurai damage reduction build. Goliath also has stones endurance which reduces damage. On top of the fighters ability to use second wind, the goliaths stones endurance and heavy armor master. I was in the fight longer than the other players. Call me odd, but my dice hate me and i rarely took great weapons master. I opted for savage attacker instead.

A fun combo with samurai is a samurai rogue elf build. Take elven accuracy. Now you get 3 d20 rolls per attack, sneak attack damage, and on a crit double sneak attack die.
Can make a deadly long range assassin

Im going to play a samurai with 3 lvls of hexblade (elven accuracy is not allowed at our table). Really looking forward to it! Greatsword eladrin hexblade samurai

my hexmurai is a uses the eldich blasts guaranteed knockback(the cant roll to pervent it) so make sure he has range to throw his summon weapon, (a Javelin) and have room to move without triggering a attack of opportunity. this combined with good armor and the temporary hp the samurai gives has made him a stand out it my group as a half-tank supporter. I would recommend getting the pulling upgrade fpr the elrich blast to keep them in range of that sword

This video maybe 3 years old, but I at least it is one of the few that encourage me to play melee str build samurai instead of the modern dex-bow build T.T

I'd take medicine over survival because someone has to be able to bring the healer back if they go down.

Some DMs don't do much with Medicine but I like to use that skill as a way to make potions etc.

Could you go with polearm mastery and sentinel samurai, or blade mastery just asking.

I'd go for insight instead of survival

When I first read the Samurai features, I was very bummed that they put Fighting Spirit on a long rest.
But, having still not sat at a table with one, I have noticed how long rest dependent most groups are, because of the casters, and I think most of the time it won't be much of an issue.
I will point out though, that a Barbarian will perform almost exactly the same way, but his Reckless Attack is always available. I think that going for the pirate concept that you described, you'd get more mileage there.
