How to Prepare Interior Woodwork for Painting with Wickes

Before you start to prepare the woodwork, make sure it’s clean and dry. If possible, remove all furniture from the room or move it into the middle and cover with a protective sheet. You should also cover your floors as dust created from sanding, splashes of filler or knotting solution could cause damage.
Before painting woodwork you need to ensure it is clean, free from dirt and there are no cracks, bubbles, flaking paint or holes.
If there are holes and cracks these will need to be filled with wood filler. Work the wood filler into all the holes and cracks using the filling knife. Be sure to use plenty of filler as you'll sand it down later to make a smooth even surface.
Let it dry for a little while and be sure to check the packaging for drying times. Then scrape off any excess filler leaving a relatively smooth surface. Be sure to add more filler if there are still holes, as it will ensure the smoothest possible finish. Once this is done, leave to dry.
Once dry, put on a dust mask and ensure the room is well ventilated. Then use a sanding block or sandpaper wrapped around a block of wood to sand down the filled area going with the grain of the underlying wood. Using a block will ensure the area remains level.
If the wooden surfaces you're painting have been painted before, you'll need to sand these surfaces down with fine sandpaper. This will create a surface that paint will bind more easily too, which is also referred to as a key.
Pay particular attention to any areas with drips or flaking paint and make sure these areas are completely smoothed out.
Brush down all sanded wood and then vacuum the surrounding areas as you do not want stray sanded dust getting on to wet paint.
Now clean the wood using sugar soap, apply it liberally across the wooden surfaces with a sponge before wiping down and rinsing with warm water. Leave it to dry thoroughly and then it's ready to start painting.
If the wooden surfaces are new and unpainted look for any knots in the grain as these will need to be treated with two coats of knotting solution. Otherwise they can leak risen into the paint work, which leads to discolouration and stickiness.
Be sure to follow the manufacture instructions for the correct application method. And once it is dry paint the wood all over with primer. It's important to use a primer on unpainted wooden surfaces to ensure better adhesion of paint and a longer lasting finish.
When this is dry you are ready to do the undercoat, but alternatively you can use a combined primer undercoat to save time.
