  • Being bored at the shop one day, I wondered if resin prints had any risk of being seriously flammable so I decided to do some test with scrap prints. This video shows my findings.

    You might find it underwhelming but I am a cancer researcher and love 3d printing, so look for ways to work 3d printed stuff into my lab time, really handy to know the properties!

      Not underwhelming at all, safety and health is a topic that I am very interested in where I am simultaneously frustrated at fair bit of the misinformation being pushed along with the relative lack of information even when you start investigating the chemicals directly by googling the CAS numbers off various MSDS documentation. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

    Was about to print a resin candle holder, but it occurred to me that I should probably check if its flammable.
    Appreciate your video, decided Its probably not the best idea to make.

    Thanks for doing this. It’s really useful. I’m more interested in understanding uv and outdoor direct sunlight resistance. It’s seems the deflection temps vary greatly between resins.

    I'm actually glad for this outcome. Because it means I can probably resin print parts near the hotend of my fdm printer and they will likely hold up or in the very least be brittle while hot but hold their shape.

    im going to be trying thick resin prints for small model rocket booster nozzles, it looks like they'll last just long enough to survive the entire burn

    Very interesting test, I'm looking to a material to print a fan shroud for my fdm printer. Is resin a good alternative to print on a pretty warm bed?

    I've been thinking about designing a table lamp base that I can put on a piece of wood and run a edison bulb on top to make a fancy table lamp but I am still afraid of the edison bulb melting my 3d print.

    How about uncured resin?

    The resins i've got ignite by a gas lighter and never extinguish at all. What's the yellow resin model from ESUN? Thanks!

    so fire resistant not fireproof, like mold resin. so its fine to print an ashtray but not a stovetop pan

    very interesting. any idea if the resin vapours are flammable? i.e. when the resin is still liquid... thanks!

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 года назад +4

      Good question, I have not done any testing on liquid resin flammability as every data sheet I've looked at for the resins I worked with indicates that there is no significant flammability risk--if there was flammability risks, then there would be significantly more restrictions on how they are shipped.

    how well does it resist moderately hot heat? like, heat gun 135 C for a few minutes?

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 года назад +1

      Depends on the resin and the use. I found non mechanical or weight bearing parts held up fine in those temps and slightly beyond (hotend cooling mounts). Unsure over the long term if the head/cooling cycle will cause deterioration.

      @@HiroCreations Thanks for the reply. if you can find it, it would have some fantastic implications for the science that I'm doing. We need some parts to survive an autoclave (125c, 25 minutes). It would also help a ton of researchers. So far youre the only video willing to try this. The internet is surprisingly a mess of none results on this topic.

    How about the Alcohol you use to clean the prints in the wash & cure bucket, could that catch on fire?

    I think u burn it on the outside where theres a lot of wind. It does catch fire easier than your video. Atleast mine
