My ancestors come from the large village of Rhosllanerchrugog in north East Wales, where there are many with shared names and surnames. However, I found a category of official documentation (electoral registers) where voters’ names are accompanied by family nicknames given in brackets, to differentiate between voters from those with identical names eg Thomas Jones (Ty Canol) and John Hughes (Bishop/Y Lein). These electoral rolls/registers are kept in the local Records Office (in my case in the nearest large town of Wrexham). I am not sure if this occurs elsewhere in Wales. I have found family nicknames in newspaper obituaries (as well as oral family tradition) and local Tythe Maps.
Thank you, this is really informative and interesting 😊
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed!
