  • One of the major perks for Southern gardeners is that we can have non-stop flowers for winter by simply planting a few camellia bushes. These low-maintenance shrubs bring massive amounts of stunning flowers beginning in the Fall (camellia sasanqua) and continue throughout the early Spring (camellia japonica). Join me as we discuss the basics of camellias and how you can integrate them into your garden space. School is now in session for camellia 101!

    Awesome information. I have a mature Camelia (state flower for Alabama) and I’ve never known how to prune it. I’ve cut off buds many times and then complained that it never blooms. My fault! Now I know! 👍

    I have a silly question. Why do most nurseries carry lg proven winners plants? I have so much better luck here in zone 5 buying a gal. Size. I bought 5 limelights and 1 3 gal the 1 &2 gallons were much bigger in the fall and were like $30 cheaper. I drive 45 min to a nursery that only carries the smaller size. Does proven winners make you get the larger ones? Thank you and I love your videos because you show good and bad of gardening not just the good you are also not afraid to get dirty. So many youtubers are prissy pants and don't show reality😊. Thank you for all you do.

    Lovely video! I found you guys after Laura at Garden Answer shared your channel with us all. Quick question, are the Camellias you grow in the South the same as the ones we have in the UK? You mentioned they’re not frost hardy but it can get quite cold here and I have some very old camellia japonicas in our garden. Just curious! 🌸🌺🥰

    This was really helpful and now I understand why I only have blooms at the bottom. So, should I let my camellia hedge grow out of its shape over the winter? Tell the landscapers not to trim it? TIA

    We are coming into July now and assuming it will flower in august as new buds coming (Australia). Is it ok to give it a drink of weak coffee? I also added iron to the soil as we get a lot of rainfall here. I heard that helps as the nutrients can get washed away.

    • @GardeningwithCreekside
      @GardeningwithCreekside  3 года назад +1

      The key to transplanting camellias and shrubs in general is to get as much root system as you possibly can. You can certainly try to move them and this is the perfect time to do it.

    I bought 3 October Magic “Snow”Camilias (susanqua) in September. I’m Zone 9 in Florida. They have buds on them, but I have yet to see one bloom. I’m getting worried that I am doing something wrong. Everyone else’s camellias have bloomed. 😅

    • @GardeningwithCreekside
      @GardeningwithCreekside  3 года назад +3

      I bet it's nothing you did. More than likely the camellias were trimmed at the wrong time and all of their blooms were cut off. Just keep loving on them and they will bloom next Fall.

    • @GardeningwithCreekside
      @GardeningwithCreekside  3 года назад +2

      Did you get a freeze recently? If so, it would have fried them. As long as you have new buds it will rebloom this season. The cold temps only zap the current flowers.
