    [HONOR MAGIC VS INITIAL REVIEW]
    Stop me if you've heard this one before: "great hardware, undone by under-done software."
    If that sounds like a line straight out of a Huawei phone review from 2016, well, that tracks. Because Honor began its corporate life as a youth-focused sub-brand of that now-beleaguered behemoth, and even though Honor is now an independent phone maker shipping its first global foldable (Google apps and all) … well, a lot of its software still feels stuck in Shenzhen.
    Still, it’s early software, and it’s a folding phone - from a brand that historically has competed on price. So the Honor Magic Vs might be an important step toward broader foldable adoption … if that price is right. From Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, I'm Michael Fisher - and this is MrMobile's initial review!
    (NOTE: MrMobile was informed late in the review process that the Honor Magic Vs software would receive an update before release. That update will address, among other things, the missing app drawer - though more details were not immediately available. If the Magic Vs user experience changes significantly in the time leading up to release, follow-up coverage may be warranted. Stay tuned!)

    Yep, an IR blaster is one of those things you don't think about until you need it. My Poco F3 has one after my last three phones didn't and just when I got it last year the remote for my Blu Ray player went missing while moving. That ten cent IR blaster is the difference between me having a movie night and me having e waste as I can't find a replacement online.

    • @josiahstearns9615
      @josiahstearns9615 Год назад +8

      I totally concur. The last time I had a smart phone with an IR Blaster was in my Galaxy Note 4. And, sure, maybe there are some that don’t think twice about it considering that most apps run over wifi to control smart TV’s among other things. But in the event that you don’t have wifi access to the unit that’s connected to the internet, then it helps to simplify the annoyance of trying to find a remote that could otherwise be within your grasp in the form a smartphone.

      Michael's work has been on YT for a very long time and any tech company who isn't familiar to him by now or his terms has been living under a rock and shouldn't be wasting his time. I think in Honor's case this time around, they are just trying to a buy a little goodwill when they are comping your trip, hotel stay and meals and at best you may go a little easy on them when reviewing their product but that's about it, Mr. Mobile tells it like it is and is a down to earth reviewer which is why he is one of the few YT tech reviewers I regularly follow.

    Enjoyed the review. I find it strange how common it is for reviewers to knock on colorful icons, and drawn illustrations in their devices as childish. Same goes with having more colorful or designs on the phone itself being labeled as toy-like. I need color and art in my life, that doesn’t make me a child. (My penchant for toys and children’s show does :V)
    For the icons and font, it also helps people find things easier. An example is when Google changed a bunch of their icons to have similar colors. I’ve had a harder time finding gmail, drive, and meet when they did.

    As is, even with the bugs and style issues, a custom launcher and some finger crossing for updates might have been enough for me to pull the trigger on this. But that price, oof. I wish Android companies focused more on software details (not only foldables, any phone). Hardware reached the level where year to year difference is minimal, but constant chase for new processors, lenses often leads to software that's just not on pair with hardware of the device... Short periods between newest and upcoming models often result in "we fill fix it with updates, but hey, look what we prepared for our new device" halfbaked phones.

    Also the Fold 4 has stylus support, and as a Note (now Ultra user) that's important to me. THOUGH, the Fold 4's "special S Pen" is weird. It's an eraser in most drawing apps. I found this out by using it, and also owning EMR pens that have a dedicated "eraser" on them, and taking said pens with a dedicated eraser on them to AT&T and using them with the fold 4 without issue. This becomes problematic since a lot of apps code for and with that optional pen feature in mind. Meaning drawing apps on the whole get made useless on the fold.

My old pen is working fine!" reaction... Until it's inevitably very much NOT working fine. The way they did it was the best solution to a unsolvable problem.

    Coming from an iPhone i expect something for that price range and Android don‘t nail it, the foldables especially. I have to admit that the used hardware, like cpu finally catched up to the price tag, no “exynos experiments” on a device that is beyond the 1k mark. But the software still lags to utilize the individual strengths of the devices and that is pretty sad.

    He is Michael Fisher ! And he does a review !
    92 components reduced to 4 is bean counter's dream for sure ! Hope it does good for the user too ! And you dont get 5000 mAH on some conventional rectangular-phones without folding ! Shock ! Sad to hear there are so many flaws in functioning of the software and it's utility. Not to mention the camera's button popping in the middle of the bend in 90-degree position 9:44 - gooey cheese ? Someone said cheese ? Gimme ! Gimme NAOW !
    As for Surfshark - if someone tested it in various countries of this world, it sure was you, Mr Mobile !

    If I turned the sound off and squinted I'd be certain this review was of the Huawei Mate X2, which I recently parted with for all the reasons you mention. And aside from the internal camera and slightly different aesthetics elsewhere, the hinges etc look the same as does much of the user interface, errors and all.
    Whilst it was an amazing handset, it felt as though it had been rushed and somewhat unfinished.

    I just got my fold 4 a month ago, and am enjoying my choice! The only thing I'm gonna regret is not waiting to get the fold 5 later this year, but as it being my first fold phone I'm never going back to a normal phone and hopefully 3 years from now when I wanna upgrade to the new fold it will be worth it. Came from an iPhone 12 pro max Btw.

What have you heard so far? Once again, my gratitude and thanks for all you do! Continued success and blessings to you and your family! 👍🙏

    We need more global launch foldable, I know I will buy a Fold in the future, but it's current form is suboptimal at best, more people need to push Samsung forward.

    I have to agree with the comment regarding his ( mrmobile) surprise on the software. Thought it's going to receive a software update. Certain quality of life functions should have been resolved before release and not promised near or after release. You can call yourself truly being competitive if you are not providing more than the already established Samsung fold.

    Hey Michael, a question.
    i hate reflexes.
    the first thing i do when a buy a new mac or a new phone is to install a matte antireflex screen protector.
    how does this work with foldables? is it possible to install a matte screen protector (or any screen protector) on the internal screen?

    5:00 did you notice any difference in sound between max and medium or just before max?
    On my Mate 30 Pro, sound ia fuller and looka like aound boom effect when it oa below 13 (out of 15 sound volume). From 13 and up, bass or deeper sounds are gone and only high tones are left... It sounds horrible on max.
    I use max only when in crowded and noisy environments.

    With each new non-Pixel foldable release, it becomes more and more apparent that for Western market users, the Samsung Fold series and hopefully the Pixel Fold when that comes out, are really the only options if you want foldable software that works like probably many of us in the US want to use a foldable. I am firmly in the Pixel camp in terms of experience and UI and unless Google somehow royally screws up their foldable, it will be my first foldable phone no questions asked.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater Год назад

      There is absolutely no reason to think a Pixel Fold will be any good. Google apps are notoriously unoptimized for foldables, and Samsung's brute force fixes for aspect ratio and rotation, among other things, are the only reason Android works well on the Fold.
