In wonka I didn’t see a big problem as the role really only had like 5 small scenes. The actors to portray the umpalumpa would have to be cgi ed anyways so either way didn’t matter.

Timothee Chalamet was an actor on set, not someone deciding who was casted to play what role. He’s probably one of the least problematic young actors in Hollywood, he shows up, does the job (phenomenally at that) and works on his growth as an actor in between his projects. He’s educated and talented and honestly I’d be more surprised if he did decide to make a comment about this shenanigans.

Casting unproblematically has pretty much become impossible. Like, if your cast is not diverse, it’s bad. If you give a role which was described as white in the source material or just coincidentally played by a white actor before, you get criticised. When you cast small people for the role of dwarfs or similar, you get criticised for reproducing stereotypes. When you don’t cast small people for those roles, you get criticised for robbing them of possible roles.
Edit: I want to add here that on one hand these decisions are made by non-diverse groups of people (so marginalised people are not included in the decision-making) and the discussions always get extremely emotional

The problem with any sequel, prequel or remake- people fall in love with one of the original characters because they relate to them, or they are inspired by them. To them, this “Willy Wonka”, “Ariel”, “Luke Skywalker” etc is the one and only “true” one. It’s like someone coming in and just replacing your bff Steve, with just some other “Steve”. It will never be the original Steve, just A Steve.

@@Robcopwk I think you’re still missing the entire point. Instead of recycling other people’s stories and characters, like turning the masterpiece LOTR into The Rings of Power, come up with an entirely NEW story. For instance Harry Potter may have used a few similar characters or plot elements in some of the stories but it was an entirely different universe, with different characters. I’m sure there are millions of fiction novels that would be great source material for entertainment. Not to mention folklores, myths, and legends from many cultures around the world- in fact, even some historic or historical fiction has made great entertainment.
