The Johnny Depp version is actually as close to the book you can get. Roal Dahl absolutely hated the gene wilder version, and said it was nothing like he wrote about including wonka. The Depp version was actually being produced by Roal's wife. Willy Wonka isn't supposed to be whimsical or charismatic at all! He's a genius and an anti-social outcast who doesn't like people and is socially awkward. I'd look into the Depp version deeper, because there's a lot more hidden details and story that did far better than Gene's version
Okay but Gene had an interpretation of the character that will be forever the most looked up upon. May be that Dhal did not want people to think Wonka's character had malice and was some kind of a villain, but the movie did a lot better in my opinion giving him that kind of personality and actually telling something with the story
Just like the movie _Return to Oz_ was more like the books than the original movie, but people hated it because it was too dark. The _Wizard of Oz_ books are quite dark.
The depp version was a totally different type of film. It was almost like he set up all the kids for their sins, like the films seven or saw, but with a tasty and sweet non fatal punishment.
This!!! And the songs, oh my god. People who haven't read the book don't know that Danny actually used the original lyrics from the Oompa Loompa songs for the songs of the movie... the man is a genius!! And using real squirrels??? I mean, come on! Even the sets were magnificent, it feels real. When I read the book after years of having watched the original movie and the 2005 adaptation, I ended up convinced that the 2005 film made far more justice to the book than the 1971 version, and Roald would've actually liked it better. He really disliked Willy Wonka and The Witches.
How old are you guys that watched this when you were kids? I'm curious if the bias is dependent on you having experienced the depp version first. I'm a 36 year old millennial. And there's just no topping Gene Wilder. He just is Wonka. And the songs are iconic. The 2005 just did not have the heart of the original and being more loyal to the book and showing the backstory of the characters did not really add depth to the story. But I do not believe everybody has to like everything all the same. I miss the era of movies when they were not all made to be a huge blockbuster.

People used to say, "the book was better", but now, because no one reads, most say, "the original version of the movie was better". Remakes and sequels are often garbage.
The original version of the movie was only made that way due to a corporate sponsorship of a real candy bar. The actual one the original writer wanted was the adaptation of it in 2005 which people hated for somehow being a “remake”, when that was not its intention.
But that would require people to ... actually... ... read!!! You MONSTER! How dare you expect anyone to ... read ... *vomits*. We live in times where "sources" don't matter, and even if they ARE pulled up, they are disregarded, retro-fitted and revisioned to match modern politics and sensibilities, rather than facts and faithful or even creative retelling. So hence people don't "read" (supresses the urge to barf)... How dare you call for that! [/SARCASM OFF] So, yeah. Welcome to the future. Interesting that they tried making a prequel to the story, but the setup "Hero good, Companies bad" is such a layz take. Similar to what they did in "Curela" - a hugely missed opporunity for a real conflict rooted in the character and chance for growth and change... They could have gone for Wonka's upbringing and maybe trials and fails to get into the business driving him "crazy" - like I envisioned Cruela to go too, but instead they went into some stupid backstory to include Dalmatians somehow. Predictable and so not fitting the character. They are just geniuses to begin with and have some "tragic" (not really) backstory.
I noticed it’s becoming the same thing with Charlie and the chocolate factory. A lot of people hated it but now It’s been gaining a more cult following.
I’ve seen many people being very skeptical about this movie, and so that kinda led me to prepare the movie to be bad. But honestly, I felt myself smiling throughout the movie, and although some jokes didn’t exactly make me laugh, other jokes made me chuckle and breathe through my nostrils. The movie greatly explained Wonka’s backstory and showed foreshadowing that regards to the first movie. This was a charming movie. People should definitely watch it with their families, and all and all I rate it a 7.5/10 :)
I feel the same way! It was so much better than I thought, and although some lines were a bit corny I thought it was a wonderful and lighthearted movie.

I think there are many reasons for lackluster reboots, sequels, etc....but I rarely hear anyone bringing up the fact that the writers, and directors feel uninspired, bored, and creatively stunted; when they're always forced to adapt someone else's work - and never allowed to create their own. Obviously there are many other reasons for poor storytelling in modern films - corporate meddling, constant woke messaging, deconstruction of characters, and laziness. That being said - CREATIVE people need to CREATE..... and they're not being given the chance.
A lot of it is due to nepotism as well - many of the writers, storyboarders and producers these days are talentless hacks who are just 3rd generation hollywood given a job because of who their uncle or aunt is/was. They've never been a normal person in their life so they think the narratives pushed by media and stories are what people actually think/believe and it becomes a self feeding cycle.
Shoot even when they seem to be able to create their own stories with the material it sucks...Witcher...Later seasons of Game of Thrones. Rings of Power ..
@bryan81584 - Well, every franchise you mentioned was adapted from someone else's original work. So while the writers might have been given a bit more freedom on some of those projects, they were still boxed in creatively; having to use a pre-existing world, pre-existing characters, etc. I think these writers would probably be much passionate if they were creating something all their own - rather than having to re-tell the stories of others.
The last good movies i saw was Barbie and Everything, Everywhere, At all Once, one this year and one last year :/ from the overflow of movies they keep pumping only 2 were wacthable, Hollywood deserves to go broke.
Modern movies all have the same artificial look and pacing, soppy acting, full of awful w0ke and silly or loud music, its enough to make you glaze over with complete boredom. The Wilder version is unbeatable.
It really blows my mind that despite all the advances in lighting, film, light sensors, glass, cameras, color grading, and editing that we've had since the original Willy Wonka movie, somehow each time they try to remake it the visuals look more and more like visual barf.
Are you talking about movie remakes in general or about Willy Wonka remakes? Because in case you don't know, Charly and the chocolate factory wasn't a remake of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory.
I loved the new Wonka movie. Great storyline, wonderful soundtrack, spot on acting. I highly recommend it. It's a very entertaining two-hour onslaught of colour, music and emotion. They're not making them like this anymore.
@@AbrasiousProductions That's fine, you don't have to like it. But it could be a personal issue with you - maybe some reason why you look upon things with a miserable lens. And that is totally fine. Personally, I loved the film and found it to be wholesome and genuinely fun.
I enjoy the Wilder movie due to the nostalgia of watching it repeatedly as a child. As someone who has read Dahl's works I disagree and think that Burton's movie is great too.
I grew up on the Depp one saw it when I was 9, but the Wilder one better, I saw that when I was like 15 I was like wow this so much better. I think it was the practical effects, which I prefer anyways, it was so seemless and Charlie’s grandpa was wildin. So I was more immersed in the world with practical effects it felt real like it could really happen. Also Tim Burton Wonka felt kinda socially awkward and anxious idk while Wilder was a lot more charismatic and captivating, but still had that lil crazy factor like you didn’t know what to expect. I think Wilder one is more enjoyable overall
Ironically Barbie became a hit for some guys watching this movie, because the producers had circled so hard that when they presented Ken, he became a hero.
I really enjoyed the new Wonka movie after a year of hating on it. It came at a very cynical part of my life. I watched it with my 3 year old son after a divorce and seeing him enjoy it so much and hearing a song in the film like "For A Moment" with lyrics such as "For a moment, life doesn't seem quite so bad. For a moment, I kinda forgot to be sad" really hit hard and is representative of what it felt like to watch this movie. Because it was so fun, creative, it didn't take itself seriously, it was silly, playful, and sharing it with my son at his first imax experience was special. Sometimes you need silly movies made with heart like this during these times to forget the hard realities of life.
Those lyrics resonated with me so much. Thank you for sharing. I went with my daughters, and after years of feeling numb, for a moment, I genuinely enjoyed myself, as well. All the best to everyone. 🌷

well the argument there is that those movies have been in production for a while. it's like turning around a tanker. things will be bad for a while until maybe they start getting better
Agreed, but this particular Wonka movie was _not_ made by Disney, it was made by Warner Brothers. As for Disney, they are woke as hell and the only thing I even like from them are the live action _Alice in Wonderland_ movies, but I find ways to watch those without Disney earning any $$$ from me watching those.
Honestly after watching the movie, I cannot see how one could not like anything about it. There's a lot to like and I don't think we've gotten a movie this wholesome and enjoyable in a long time!
Couldn't agree more. While it's not a "cinematic masterpiece" it is a really fun movie. I loved the songs in it. I don't know how some people didn't enjoy it.
pure delusion and bitterness. if its not your deep and thought provoking masterpiece, it gets judged for being bad on all fronts. one loses every crediblity if one dislikes everything about this movie
The singing and songs ruined it for me. I get the original has singing but not every 2 freaking mins. Cut out thing singing and it would have been fine. There is also a certain darkness missing from it i feel.

Ok, am I missing something? Wonka isn't a remake or a reboot as far as I was aware. It's a prequel to the Johnny Depp version where Chalamet's Wonka is then grown up. This video keeps stating it's a reboot, and it's not. I mean, it's kind of an unnecessary prequel... but let's be clear here.

They should of just made it Charlie after we won the factory. Older, companies stressful, he's becoming more and more like wonka, factorys not doing to well, has another golden ticket competition which makes the factory massive, does evil things to the contestants and at the climax he sees himself in one of the kids and gives the factory over with a warning of what stress, and over working can do to someone or some shit lol.
It would’ve been cool if they did that at the end of the dark reimagining of the film which was almost entirely faithful to the book, and then they made a sequel for it

I've loved all three films, for different reasons. Maybe I'm easily pleased - who knows, but I came away on quite a high after seeing Wonka. So much great acting. Hugh Grant is incredible!
I actually like this version (2023) for it's writting . everything is subtile and well written I think, They don't spat fact on your face. And maybe this version isn't faithfull to the original but i loved how lovely and kind this wonka was.
I don't like how the only criticism this creator can make is comparing it to the previous movies. When watching the film I think it becomes clear that it wants to be its own individual work despite being based off of an existing story. The whimsical nature still leaves room for mystery and although Wonka is definitely not the best film to ever exist, it was refreshing to see a movie with all the simple building blocks necessary to good story telling which can not be seen in a lot of movies these days.
I think the biggest critique is how unoriginal and uncreative Hollywood has become, which isn't anything new, but it's extremely valid. The only thing I care about is a good story with lovable, fun and relatable characters if that can be delivered with a preexisting franchise go for it. But I think a lot of people would prefer original concepts, new stories, original characters and preferably a strong emotional weight to the story. Instead of milking old franchises to death, try to make new ones. It’s never guaranteed, but all amazing franchises start with one great movie and a new, interesting or creative concept.

Dahl disowned the film and was "infuriated" by the plot deviations and considered the music to be "saccharine, sappy and sentimental". He was also disappointed because the film "placed too much emphasis on Willy Wonka and not enough on Charlie" and because Gene Wilder was cast as Wonka
That's fine, I consider the book and the original movie two separate things that each have their own identity and are good in their own ways. They are definitely different, but each is great. The music from the film is impeccable and memorable, the 2005 film music sucked
Dahl helped adapt Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (story by Ian Fleming, you know the James Bond guy) for film and then disowned it too. I've read the book and seen the 1971 film. The 1971 film is better than the book. IMO anyway.
They should have done a prequel from the perspective of the factory that manufactures the golden ticket paper. That looked like some high quality gold foil filament.
There's an animated short from the 90s about gold wrapping paper and the cycle it goes through. From a rich kid with an expensive present down to a poor kid that actually values the best up last piece of gold paper.
Johnny Depp version slapped, me and my little sister watched it hundreds of times. I grew up on the original but the JDepp version was for her and it was one of our go to thanksgiving/Christmas season movies!
Well done or not you're ignoring the points made in the video. The Wonka movie completely ruined the lore and dynamics of the Willy Wonka universe. What's worse is that it's not simply another retelling but a prequel, so it's really twisting the knife after stabbing the franchise.

As someone who didn’t grow up with the original (still haven’t seen that one all the way through) I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. I thought it was a quality, and overall pretty wholesome.
I liked the movie the kid did pretty good or at least entertaining Id say. The thing is I guess to have a defense for him, I tried watching the movie from a perspective that Wonka was a gullable kid and the world would eventually change him into the secluded, untrusting man, etc... of the original movie who began to hope again through that kid if i remember correctly
The risk averse angle is only one part of the story, and I wish more ppl spoke about this - the executives in the studios did not get there because they were so brilliantly original and creative. Every move they make is about covering their ass, hoping nobody finds out how full of crap they are. It's not that they choose not to do anything original or creative, is that they are incapable of it.
Im afraid I have to disagree on the remake case. Turns out, the tim burtion version was, actually way more faithful to the book. And the og that is so beloved, was actually a butchered version that the book writer hated so badly, that he forbid anyone from making a film using his work ever since. And the only reason tim burton got a shot, was because of how he made the burton's house and the author's wife gave a green light. In some circles, it is considered that Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, is actually a better movie that helps to explore a good bit into Wonka's psyche. Is it the same as gene wilder? No. Absolutely not. But personally, I believe what tim burton went for, is far more whimsical and honest. Think about it.
@@ryanmatthews3609honestly, the trailers havent interested me whatsoever. The one thing that it has going for it is the animation, and frankly, that isnt enough. It's just, an unnecessary origin. The reason that the tim burton version worked so well, was the respect it paid to the source material, and the level of work, careful casting, art direction, and set design that went into it. This just feels...forced. like it's made solely to try and prop up someone that, really isn't working.
what type of question is this. If something is successful people want more of the character. That's why they keep making remakes. Just like how we have almost 12 FNF movies. People like it so they keep making.
It's a fun movie that gives some actual smiles and enjoyment in a very serious, critical and overly analytical and unforgiving time in history. People should go see it and enjoy it for what it is. Some fun that will make you smile and laugh (which is a great thing in the current climate). Not everything needs to be a university project that needs breaking down, tearing apart and over analysing. Half the time the things people and critics think drive these movies / studios and directors into creating these films are just wrong sadly. Most people have very little real contact with the studios/ directors and therefore don't really understand the often pure and nice motives behind creating these films. It might not feel like it but it's ok to just have fun, laugh and forget the serious stuff sometimes ;)
Exactly. It's a cozy whimsical holiday movie that at no point feels insincere. And in current environment I feel this simplicity works in the movie's favor.
Totally agree. As an avid viewer of these reviews, mostly obviously negative for some reason, you go in cringing and expecting the worst when you go out there to watch it, feeling as though you're risking everything. This is an effect we have grown to assume in movies, btw, making good once enjoyable movies bad or scrutinized by amateur critics looking at Tiktok as they watch the film and keyboard warriors living in moms basements. I feel nobody doesn't want to just simply have fun anymore, even when the film is exactly that. I'm betting if Gene Wilders beloved version of Wonka came out today, it wouldnt even break even.
Maybe its because this movie is not meant to copy the old movie. This is a completely different take on the movie. Your mom just wants the the new movie to be like the old which makes no sense. Why watch a new movie with the expectation for it to be like the old one lol.
There’s so many great books out there that would make for great films, and if I’m honest, video games that have stories that are exceedingly better than any remake.

I was going to say it’s not a remake, but in a way it is. It’s a prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but it is also kind of its own thing in a way. It’s an amazing movie and I wish you would at least watch it before hating on it. Even if it isn’t a perfect adaptation it’s still an amazing movie made with love and care. It is also NOT a cash grab.
I have a thought about what you said at 1:42, when you talk of the lack of the sense of danger and malice that we got from Gene Wilder. It strikes me as pretty reasonable to assume that Wonka didn't start out that way. Wonka would hardly be the first brilliant idealist who got a bit ground down by the banality of his fellow man. In "Willy Wonka", my favorite line is that which Wonka delivers, so quietly, as Charlie gives back the Gobstopper: "So shines a good deed in a weary world." Nobody starts out that poignant when they're young; it's the result of of years of disappointment. I can't imagine that a guy like Willy Wonka would have been so boring as to have always been the same man throughout his life.
You are a very cynical and unhappy man, I wish better times to smile upon you. The movie was magnificent, best movie of 2023. It was like a warm hug, me and my family were smiling the whole time and the songs sounded as good as the old Disney classics. I hope the movie wins an Oscar next year

As good as Joker was, I had the same complaints. I don’t WANT to know why Joker is the way he is. I’d rather speculate. Joker is an exercise in fear of the unknown, and that’s why he was such a terrifying villain
The Joker is pretty much a prime example of "blank page" villain, ideal for *comics* whose readers will swallow anything hook, line and sinker if it "sounds good". Over the history of the character he has had at least a dozen different iterations and even the writers of the comics can't decide what they want him to be so in some back stories they even have the character tell the previous background stories to him. In essence he is whatever the reader of the comics want him to be. Any well-written villain needs to have these three characteristics. 1. A clear motive, preferably an underlying obsession which sets them out from any two-bit thug. 2. Traits which make them somewhat "sympathetic" to the audience or displaying characteristics which reflect some our own worst sides. 3. Consistency, which makes them human at core and is the most important factor. Now the Joker has never had a clear motive and in some iterations just makes up as he goes along. In fact he comes across as an aimless wanderer who can't even make sense of his own actions since he doesn't stick to them. The *only* clear motive he has had is to treat the world like one big joke nobody gets and therefore has the "smilex gas/joker venom" which makes everybody die smiling. Had they stuck with that every single time they'd have a character with a bizarre but clear motive. Make the entire world laugh to death. Well, he's called Joker isn't he? Not Lord Chaos or Captain Evil or Bizarro Man. As for traits. Well, the lastest iterations of the Joker portrays him as an angry teen. Teens don't get the world and can't make sense of it. Since they're driven by feelings and lack both knowledge and experience (with few exceptions) what actually is eerily predictable historical patterns instead becomes "random chaos" to them. Even the most horrible dictator like Hitler has a logical explanation given the realities of history. How many today realize that the very same social darwinism they propagate on the net was one of the core beliefs of the nazis and that this very belief actually largely paved the way for them? To ignorant people Hitler was just some crazy guy who popped up out of the blue and conned his way into power. The Holocaust becomes a wholly bizarre event too when it should be seen as the logical final goal of rabid nationalism mated with social darwinism. The Joker makes sense to these teens (and those who never developed beyond this level) because to them everything in the world is some sort of unpredictable chaos. They lack scope and can't perceive of anything else but their immediate present. They define their myopic reality from their own needs not those of those in power. All great villains are *Machiavellian* . That is why others follow them and what makes them dangerous. The Joker however is a bizarre amalgam of characteristics nobody would follow or look up to. A real-life Joker wouldn't last a day in the real criminal underworld. As for consistency. The Joker has none. He's a blank slate of random madness. Fact is that the only thing that is missing from him being a rambling madman is hallucinations. Everything else is just a chaotic mess. You see that in mentally ill people suffering from psychosis. The emperor has no clothes because the emperor is *naked* . There is nothing to explain because there is nothing to get. "I’d rather speculate." Thanks for being honest and upfront about that. Speculation is the hallmark of ignorant people who follow no paradigm and like to fit anything into their own highly subjective narrative, i.e. the same kind of people who are ignorant about oceanography and marine biology and who like to imagine that "we" (who are "we" again??) know less about the depth of the seas than we know about interstellar space (which is utter nonsense) and therefore speculate wildly about what kind of "amazing monsters" lurk there. Their *imagination* is the driving force behind this speculation, certainly not reason, observerable facts and reasonable deduction. Again since they know absolutely nothing about this matter (which is called *ignorance* ) they imagine pretty much anything. And they repeatedly are masters of a fallacy called "Argument from Ignorance" and shifting the burden of proof. Speculation holds *negative* connotations when it comes to the ignorant. "and that’s why he was such a terrifying villain" To ignorant people definitely. The fear of the unknown is largely based on *ignorance* which is why people in the past didn't dare sailing out too far because they feared they would come "to the end of the world" and just sail "over the edge". No, the sad part of the story is that the Joker is a perfect reflection of the aimless and ignorant youth of today. Educated, open-minded and knowledgeable people see the structures. The ignorant can only see the surface so the very notion that the world is random place of arbitrary events they themselves can't make sense of is why the Joker is popular with them. They don't understand the world and therefore fear it. They're as lost as the Joker. And ignorance is the real horror of our world. For it's how people are exploited. Over and out.
Hollywood are desperate for Timothy to 'Happen'. He just doesn't have that it factor to make him the next Brad Pitt. I don't think anyone has. That era of Hollywood has past. Like trying together the 1940's-60's Hollywood back.
I think Timothee is much better than Brad. The latter seems only one- or two-dimensional to me, while the first is multi-dimensional IMHO. Also, one need to realize that Pitt has got better as an actor with age. Timothee shined at his 20 and continues to grow.
@@LAZISH don't embarrass yourself like that. Look at Brad's filmography, he either 'makes' the movie or is perfect for the role. Whereas Timothy almost always takes me out of the movie, cause he goes for roles that don't suit him at all. I really liked 'Bones and All', but he ruined the experience and his acting wasn't convincing. Unless he learns how to completely transform like Christian Bale, I won't change my opinion

“there’s no malice” in a bright and young Willy Wonka- who created a chocolate empire with his extremely eccentric imagination. This movie tells THAT story of hopes and wonders. NOT the bitter tests to young children a middle aged Wonka on the brink of retirement that the book gives us… I quite enjoyed this musical. 9/10 great story and makes you feel like a child.
I like Japanese anime--as do millions of other people outside of Japan. But they don't dumb it down for non-Japanese audiences. The characters are doing Japanese shit and you just have to figure out the cultural significance from the context. I've started watching some Chinese anime on Netflix as well and I enjoy it, even though there are historical and cultural references I don't get. (Korean dramas are also really growing in popularity outside of Korea as well.) Hollywood doesn't have to dumb down movies to translate to other languages and cultures better; they are just making dumb movies because they're idiots who don't know how stories work. They start with a message or objective, then try to build a plot around it, instead of starting with the storytelling formula and a classic trope and trying to do something new with it (including, maybe, put a message in it). The moral of the story comes at the end; it doesn't beat you over the head every 10 minutes for the next 2 hours. Lecturing is not part of the storytelling formula.
I don't think the Wonka movie in particular lectured that much. In fact I think it just popped us into magical land with no explanation, like anime plots

Gene Wilder's Wonka is a psychopath and Johnny Depp's is an alien trying his best to pretend to be human, meanwhile Tim is just a little guy making little chocolates. Not every protagonist needs to be dark and or complicated, it was refreshing seeing an earnest and kind protagonist. No ulterior motives, no potential man-slaughter, just a little guy making little chocolates.
Agreed. This video is a poor take; it's all comparison to the other movies, when really, if you take it as it is, it's way better than it has any right to be. The director having Paddington under his belt explains why it feels so wholesome, but honestly, I liked that it didn't try to be like the old ones and brought a different flavor (pun intended.) The ending was a tearjerker, and I never felt that way about the other movies. I think the nostalgia/reboot trend is bad, but this movie justifies its own existence and is not the least bit referential or derivative.

I agree about the new film but what you said about the 2005 film is incorrect quite frankly lol - “you can’t see any contrast between the real world and inside the factory” …. mannn, they did it and they did it well. Charlie’s house, the streets leading up to the factory even the shop where he got the winning ticket were all bleak and lacked the same colour palette - the shift in the colour literally happened as the front of the factory opened to reveal the welcome song show thing. Apart from it being a Tim button movie and being inherently dark, I don’t get what else you wanted them to do lol

I genuinely loved the Tim Burton film. My dad used to read the book to me as a kid, and I felt that film really brought me back to that far more so than the 1971 film. Although I do think both films missed the mark on grandpa Joe. As for this recent one, I'll give it a miss. It's obvious what this one is.
I loved this new new Wonka :) I think you should give it a try, form your own opinion, instead of just listening what people online say. I grew up with the original and Depp version and enjoyed both. This is different, but this one stands on its own as a story for a younger, optimistic Wonka. This film is directed by Paul King, who has proven himself with Paddington and Paddington 2 already. If you go in with an open mind, you'll find a genuinely fun and wholesome film. I think it's funny that Moon talks in his video as if he's an authority on the film, marking his opinions as fact.

I have not seen the movie yet. But the portrayal of Willy Wonka being entirely different from the original movie makes sense to me. He's at the start of his career and his journey in life. Before he has had his faith in human nature destroyed by his competitors and his employees betraying him. We will undoubtedly get a sequel, which will hopefully show his change in to the cynical character he was when portrayed by Gene Wilder. I am looking forward to watching this, and any potential sequels that come out.
The movie’s good and even solid but not like the best movie ever I think the number one complaint people will have with the film is wonka’s character he seems to be over the top and charming but they remove a lot of his darker characters such as how the prequel looks like wonka met the Oompa Loompas before he built the factory when Dahl implied that wonka met the Oompa Loompas when the factory was built since we wouldn’t have the whole “Grandpa Joe used to be a factory worker then got fired, for all these Oompa Loompas”
Yeah it seems like people just want the same content, not a new take on a character. Which goes against what people are currently fighting for "new adaptations and not recycled content." Tim Burton’s movie is much closer to the book than Wilder film. It’s well known Roald Dahl absolutely hated the Wilder Wonka film, studio basically bodied his script, emptied and changed the characters and made it an ad for Wonka candy at the time. Dahl’s family oversaw the Burton movie and they love it because it was closer to Roald’s vision of what he wanted the Wilder version to be.
While I agree in the sense that Hollywood shouldn't use franchises as a crutch, having already watched Wonka, man do I have to disagree. Yes, they borrow the iconography from the Gene Wilder version, but this a movie that's otherwise full of ideas of its own creation. It's charming and full of heart. It shouldn't be seen as a prequel but, as the opening credits state, 'A Paul King confection'. It's got the wonderful spirit of his Paddington movies, and it does carry a heartwarming message. The fact that something belongs in a franchise doesn't make it automatically poor. Pop culture seems perfectly fine by having multiple Bonds, Spider-Men, and Batmen.
Barbie is bright, encouraging, and the character herself, is hopeful. While Oppenheimer, is a story about ambition, dread, unforeseen consequences, and the dangers of hubris and the dark future that could come about due to us not realizing the fire that was given to us. By the modern day Prometheus. Barbenhimer is a excellent example of how, opposites attract.
When I first heard about this movie even existing, I rolled my eyes and was 100% not interested. However, I got a rare evening off and decided to take my kids to see it's as my daughter loves Timothy chalamet, so we saw Wonka tonight and it's probably the most I've smiled in a movie in a long time. It was A pleasant surprise and my whole family loved it. 10/10 go see it in a theater.
WONKA IS A PREQUEL, NOT A REMAKE. It tells an entirely new story with new characters. Charlie hasn't even been born yet, and the chocolate factory hasn't even been built. It's a companion piece to the previous story, as they put it. It's also great, according to the reviewers who have seen the whole film (and not just the badly-edited trailers.)

The Johnny Depp version is actually as close to the book you can get. Roal Dahl absolutely hated the gene wilder version, and said it was nothing like he wrote about including wonka. The Depp version was actually being produced by Roal's wife. Willy Wonka isn't supposed to be whimsical or charismatic at all! He's a genius and an anti-social outcast who doesn't like people and is socially awkward. I'd look into the Depp version deeper, because there's a lot more hidden details and story that did far better than Gene's version

How old are you guys that watched this when you were kids? I'm curious if the bias is dependent on you having experienced the depp version first. I'm a 36 year old millennial. And there's just no topping Gene Wilder. He just is Wonka. And the songs are iconic. The 2005 just did not have the heart of the original and being more loyal to the book and showing the backstory of the characters did not really add depth to the story. But I do not believe everybody has to like everything all the same. I miss the era of movies when they were not all made to be a huge blockbuster.

Interesting that they tried making a prequel to the story, but the setup "Hero good, Companies bad" is such a layz take. Similar to what they did in "Curela" - a hugely missed opporunity for a real conflict rooted in the character and chance for growth and change...
They could have gone for Wonka's upbringing and maybe trials and fails to get into the business driving him "crazy" - like I envisioned Cruela to go too, but instead they went into some stupid backstory to include Dalmatians somehow. Predictable and so not fitting the character. They are just geniuses to begin with and have some "tragic" (not really) backstory.
Fun fact: Willy Wonka was panned by critics when it first came out. It developed a cult following through the years, now considered a beloved classic.

It’s the opposite. Critics love the film and audiences have had a hard time coming to love it
I’ve seen many people being very skeptical about this movie, and so that kinda led me to prepare the movie to be bad. But honestly, I felt myself smiling throughout the movie, and although some jokes didn’t exactly make me laugh, other jokes made me chuckle and breathe through my nostrils. The movie greatly explained Wonka’s backstory and showed foreshadowing that regards to the first movie. This was a charming movie. People should definitely watch it with their families, and all and all I rate it a 7.5/10 :)

I think there are many reasons for lackluster reboots, sequels, etc....but I rarely hear anyone bringing up the fact that the writers, and directors feel uninspired, bored, and creatively stunted; when they're always forced to adapt someone else's work - and never allowed to create their own. Obviously there are many other reasons for poor storytelling in modern films - corporate meddling, constant woke messaging, deconstruction of characters, and laziness. That being said - CREATIVE people need to CREATE..... and they're not being given the chance.
A lot of it is due to nepotism as well - many of the writers, storyboarders and producers these days are talentless hacks who are just 3rd generation hollywood given a job because of who their uncle or aunt is/was. They've never been a normal person in their life so they think the narratives pushed by media and stories are what people actually think/believe and it becomes a self feeding cycle.

@bryan81584 - Well, every franchise you mentioned was adapted from someone else's original work. So while the writers might have been given a bit more freedom on some of those projects, they were still boxed in creatively; having to use a pre-existing world, pre-existing characters, etc. I think these writers would probably be much passionate if they were creating something all their own - rather than having to re-tell the stories of others.
To me it seems like every movie nowadays is everything wrong with Hollywood.
The last good movies i saw was Barbie and Everything, Everywhere, At all Once, one this year and one last year :/ from the overflow of movies they keep pumping only 2 were wacthable, Hollywood deserves to go broke.

I enjoy the Wilder movie due to the nostalgia of watching it repeatedly as a child.
As someone who has read Dahl's works I disagree and think that Burton's movie is great too.
I grew up on the Depp one saw it when I was 9, but the Wilder one better, I saw that when I was like 15 I was like wow this so much better. I think it was the practical effects, which I prefer anyways, it was so seemless and Charlie’s grandpa was wildin. So I was more immersed in the world with practical effects it felt real like it could really happen. Also Tim Burton Wonka felt kinda socially awkward and anxious idk while Wilder was a lot more charismatic and captivating, but still had that lil crazy factor like you didn’t know what to expect. I think Wilder one is more enjoyable overall

I really enjoyed the new Wonka movie after a year of hating on it. It came at a very cynical part of my life. I watched it with my 3 year old son after a divorce and seeing him enjoy it so much and hearing a song in the film like "For A Moment" with lyrics such as "For a moment, life doesn't seem quite so bad. For a moment, I kinda forgot to be sad" really hit hard and is representative of what it felt like to watch this movie. Because it was so fun, creative, it didn't take itself seriously, it was silly, playful, and sharing it with my son at his first imax experience was special. Sometimes you need silly movies made with heart like this during these times to forget the hard realities of life.

This is one of those films where I actually walked out of the cinema. Brilliant acting? Anything, but that.
I don't like how the only criticism this creator can make is comparing it to the previous movies. When watching the film I think it becomes clear that it wants to be its own individual work despite being based off of an existing story. The whimsical nature still leaves room for mystery and although Wonka is definitely not the best film to ever exist, it was refreshing to see a movie with all the simple building blocks necessary to good story telling which can not be seen in a lot of movies these days.

I think the biggest critique is how unoriginal and uncreative Hollywood has become, which isn't anything new, but it's extremely valid. The only thing I care about is a good story with lovable, fun and relatable characters if that can be delivered with a preexisting franchise go for it. But I think a lot of people would prefer original concepts, new stories, original characters and preferably a strong emotional weight to the story. Instead of milking old franchises to death, try to make new ones. It’s never guaranteed, but all amazing franchises start with one great movie and a new, interesting or creative concept.

As someone who didn’t grow up with the original (still haven’t seen that one all the way through) I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. I thought it was a quality, and overall pretty wholesome.
The Wonka movie isn’t even a remake. It’s a prequel to the original (I think), I think it’s both films. Wilder and Depp.

Im afraid I have to disagree on the remake case. Turns out, the tim burtion version was, actually way more faithful to the book. And the og that is so beloved, was actually a butchered version that the book writer hated so badly, that he forbid anyone from making a film using his work ever since. And the only reason tim burton got a shot, was because of how he made the burton's house and the author's wife gave a green light.
In some circles, it is considered that Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, is actually a better movie that helps to explore a good bit into Wonka's psyche. Is it the same as gene wilder? No. Absolutely not. But personally, I believe what tim burton went for, is far more whimsical and honest. Think about it.

It's a fun movie that gives some actual smiles and enjoyment in a very serious, critical and overly analytical and unforgiving time in history. People should go see it and enjoy it for what it is. Some fun that will make you smile and laugh (which is a great thing in the current climate). Not everything needs to be a university project that needs breaking down, tearing apart and over analysing. Half the time the things people and critics think drive these movies / studios and directors into creating these films are just wrong sadly. Most people have very little real contact with the studios/ directors and therefore don't really understand the often pure and nice motives behind creating these films. It might not feel like it but it's ok to just have fun, laugh and forget the serious stuff sometimes ;)

As an avid viewer of these reviews, mostly obviously negative for some reason, you go in cringing and expecting the worst when you go out there to watch it, feeling as though you're risking everything. This is an effect we have grown to assume in movies, btw, making good once enjoyable movies bad or scrutinized by amateur critics looking at Tiktok as they watch the film and keyboard warriors living in moms basements. I feel nobody doesn't want to just simply have fun anymore, even when the film is exactly that. I'm betting if Gene Wilders beloved version of Wonka came out today, it wouldnt even break even.

I was going to say it’s not a remake, but in a way it is. It’s a prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but it is also kind of its own thing in a way. I have a thought about what you said at 1:42, when you talk of the lack of the sense of danger and malice that we got from Gene Wilder. It strikes me as pretty reasonable to assume that Wonka didn't start out that way. Wonka would hardly be the first brilliant idealist who got a bit ground down by the banality of his fellow man. In "Willy Wonka", my favorite line is that which Wonka delivers, so quietly, as Charlie gives back the Gobstopper: "So shines a good deed in a weary world."
Nobody starts out that poignant when they're young; it's the result of of years of disappointment. I can't imagine that a guy like Willy Wonka would have been so boring as to have always been the same man throughout his life.

As good as Joker was, I had the same complaints. I don’t WANT to know why Joker is the way he is. I’d rather speculate. Joker is an exercise in fear of the unknown, and that’s why he was such a terrifying villain
The Joker is pretty much a prime example of "blank page" villain, ideal for *comics* whose readers will swallow anything hook, line and sinker if it "sounds good". Over the history of the character he has had at least a dozen different iterations and even the writers of the comics can't decide what they want him to be so in some back stories they even have the character tell the previous background stories to him. In essence he is whatever the reader of the comics want him to be.
Any well-written villain needs to have these three characteristics.
1. A clear motive, preferably an underlying obsession which sets them out from any two-bit thug.
2. Traits which make them somewhat "sympathetic" to the audience or displaying characteristics which reflect some our own worst sides.
3. Consistency, which makes them human at core and is the most important factor.
Now the Joker has never had a clear motive and in some iterations just makes up as he goes along. In fact he comes across as an aimless wanderer who can't even make sense of his own actions since he doesn't stick to them. The *only* clear motive he has had is to treat the world like one big joke nobody gets and therefore has the "smilex gas/joker venom" which makes everybody die smiling. Had they stuck with that every single time they'd have a character with a bizarre but clear motive. Make the entire world laugh to death. Well, he's called Joker isn't he? Not Lord Chaos or Captain Evil or Bizarro Man.
As for traits. Well, the lastest iterations of the Joker portrays him as an angry teen. Teens don't get the world and can't make sense of it. Since they're driven by feelings and lack both knowledge and experience (with few exceptions) what actually is eerily predictable historical patterns instead becomes "random chaos" to them. Even the most horrible dictator like Hitler has a logical explanation given the realities of history. How many today realize that the very same social darwinism they propagate on the net was one of the core beliefs of the nazis and that this very belief actually largely paved the way for them? To ignorant people Hitler was just some crazy guy who popped up out of the blue and conned his way into power. The Holocaust becomes a wholly bizarre event too when it should be seen as the logical final goal of rabid nationalism mated with social darwinism.
The Joker makes sense to these teens (and those who never developed beyond this level) because to them everything in the world is some sort of unpredictable chaos. They lack scope and can't perceive of anything else but their immediate present. They define their myopic reality from their own needs not those of those in power.
All great villains are *Machiavellian* . That is why others follow them and what makes them dangerous. The Joker however is a bizarre amalgam of characteristics nobody would follow or look up to. A real-life Joker wouldn't last a day in the real criminal underworld.
As for consistency. The Joker has none. He's a blank slate of random madness. Fact is that the only thing that is missing from him being a rambling madman is hallucinations. Everything else is just a chaotic mess. You see that in mentally ill people suffering from psychosis.
The emperor has no clothes because the emperor is *naked* . There is nothing to explain because there is nothing to get.

Speculation is the hallmark of ignorant people who follow no paradigm and like to fit anything into their own highly subjective narrative, i.e. the same kind of people who are ignorant about oceanography and marine biology and who like to imagine that "we" (who are "we" again??) know less about the depth of the seas than we know about interstellar space (which is utter nonsense) and therefore speculate wildly about what kind of "amazing monsters" lurk there.
Their *imagination* is the driving force behind this speculation, certainly not reason, observerable facts and reasonable deduction.

They don't understand the world and therefore fear it. They're as lost as the Joker.
And ignorance is the real horror of our world. For it's how people are exploited.

the book gives us… I quite enjoyed this musical. 9/10 great story and makes you feel like a child.
I like Japanese anime--as do millions of other people outside of Japan. But they don't dumb it down for non-Japanese audiences. The characters are doing Japanese shit and you just have to figure out the cultural significance from the context. I've started watching some Chinese anime on Netflix as well and I enjoy it, even though there are historical and cultural references I don't get. (Korean dramas are also really growing in popularity outside of Korea as well.)
Hollywood doesn't have to dumb down movies to translate to other languages and cultures better; they are just making dumb movies because they're idiots who don't know how stories work. They start with a message or objective, then try to build a plot around it, instead of starting with the storytelling formula and a classic trope and trying to do something new with it (including, maybe, put a message in it). The moral of the story comes at the end; it doesn't beat you over the head every 10 minutes for the next 2 hours. Lecturing is not part of the storytelling formula.
I don't think the Wonka movie in particular lectured that much. In fact I think it just popped us into magical land with no explanation, like anime plots

Agreed. This video is a poor take; it's all comparison to the other movies, when really, if you take it as it is, it's way better than it has any right to be. The director having Paddington under his belt explains why it feels so wholesome, but honestly, I liked that it didn't try to be like the old ones and brought a different flavor (pun intended.) The ending was a tearjerker, and I never felt that way about the other movies. I think the nostalgia/reboot trend is bad, but this movie justifies its own existence and is not the least bit referential or derivative.

I agree about the new film but what you said about the 2005 film is incorrect quite frankly lol - “you can’t see any contrast between the real world and inside the factory” …. mannn, they did it and they did it well. Charlie’s house, the streets leading up to the factory even the shop where he got the winning ticket were all bleak and lacked the same colour palette - the shift in the colour literally happened as the front of the factory opened to reveal the welcome song show thing. Apart from it being a Tim button movie and being inherently dark, I don’t get what else you wanted them to do lol

The audacity to have a section of this video titled "Originality", with the intent to discuss how people are tired of seeing the same content lazily repackaged... in a largely plagiarized video.
I genuinely loved the Tim Burton film. My dad used to read the book to me as a kid, and I felt that film really brought me back to that far more so than the 1971 film. Although I do think both films missed the mark on grandpa Joe.
As for this recent one, I'll give it a miss. It's obvious what this one is.
I loved this new new Wonka :) I think you should give it a try, form your own opinion, instead of just listening what people online say. I grew up with the original and Depp version and enjoyed both. This is different, but this one stands on its own as a story for a younger, optimistic Wonka. This film is directed by Paul King, who has proven himself with Paddington and Paddington 2 already. If you go in with an open mind, you'll find a genuinely fun and wholesome film.
I think it's funny that Moon talks in his video as if he's an authority on the film, marking his opinions as fact.

I have not seen the movie yet. But the portrayal of Willy Wonka being entirely different from the original movie makes sense to me. He's at the start of his career and his journey in life. Before he has had his faith in human nature destroyed by his competitors and his employees betraying him. We will undoubtedly get a sequel, which will hopefully show his change in to the cynical character he was when portrayed by Gene Wilder. I am looking forward to watching this, and any potential sequels that come out.

The movie’s good and even solid but not like the best movie ever
I think the number one complaint people will have with the film is wonka’s character he seems to be over the top and charming but they remove a lot of his darker characters such as how the prequel looks like wonka met the Oompa Loompas before he built the factory when Dahl implied that wonka met the Oompa Loompas when the factory was built since we wouldn’t have the whole “Grandpa Joe used to be a factory worker then got fired, for all these Oompa Loompas”
Yeah it seems like people just want the same content, not a new take on a character. Which goes against what people are currently fighting for "new adaptations and not recycled content." But when we take an old character and change it people get mad that its different and praise the old version. @@sophiagonzales8974

Tim Burton’s movie is much closer to the book than Wilder film. It’s well known Roald Dahl absolutely hated the Wilder Wonka film, studio basically bodied his script, emptied and changed the characters and made it an ad for Wonka candy at the time. Dahl’s family oversaw the Burton movie and they love it because it was closer to Roald’s vision of what he wanted the Wilder version to be.
While I agree in the sense that Hollywood shouldn't use franchises as a crutch, having already watched Wonka, man do I have to disagree. Yes, they borrow the iconography from the Gene Wilder version, but this a movie that's otherwise full of ideas of its own creation. It's charming and full of heart. It shouldn't be seen as a prequel but, as the opening credits state, 'A Paul King confection'. It's got the wonderful spirit of his Paddington movies, and it does carry a heartwarming message. The fact that something belongs in a franchise doesn't make it automatically poor. Pop culture seems perfectly fine by having multiple Bonds, Spider-Men, and Batmen.
Barbie is bright, encouraging, and the character herself, is hopeful. While Oppenheimer, is a story about ambition, dread, unforeseen consequences, and the dangers of hubris and the dark future that could come about due to us not realizing the fire that was given to us. By the modern day Prometheus. Barbenhimer is a excellent example of how, opposites attract.
When I first heard about this movie even existing, I rolled my eyes and was 100% not interested. However, I got a rare evening off and decided to take my kids to see it's as my daughter loves Timothy chalamet, so we saw Wonka tonight and it's probably the most I've smiled in a movie in a long time. It was A pleasant surprise and my whole family loved it. 10/10 go see it in a theater.

I saw it last night with my friend and LOVED it.
WONKA IS A PREQUEL, NOT A REMAKE. It tells an entirely new story with new characters. Charlie hasn't even been born yet, and the chocolate factory hasn't even been built. It's a companion piece to the previous story, as they put it. It's also great, according to the reviewers who have seen the whole film (and not just the badly-edited trailers.)

Villains are not intimidating at all (They're a fucking chocolate mafia... With a chocolate vault under a church... in a Ronald Dhal based story. What Wattpad writing guide told you Villains NEED to be intimidating? That's clearly not what they're going for, You're complaining that God of War isn't a good platformer...)
Soundtrack's mediocre (I liked it so... I guess the problem is with your taste? It's nothing big but I liked a few songs and they get the story across)
Directing is inefficient (Were you at the shooting? Did you see the director in person? No? I thought so.)
The only consolation is that it's entertaining from start to finish. (You sir, embody everything I hate about movie critics. Being entertaining and having fun to watch is not enough for you? Then what do you EXPECT from a movie)
Also you complain about the directing, and as an example you bring out the poster.... My brother in Christ, the poster is from the marketing departament, the director has nothing to do with it XD

I agree with everything you said and especially the last part: the marketing department really let this film down. The poster and trailer were so bad. The film deserved much better. I've seen it now, and it could be a future classic.
@@AbcDef-ww2gy Thanks... It's uhh... Kinda personal, but a close family member died just before the movie came out. I cannot grieve like other people do. Often times, I just don't know what to do with myself... So I went to the cinema, just to do SOMETHING. It helped. I felt better

Yes, the best way to deal with a sudden bereavement is to throw yourself into something that will occupy your mind (until a time when your mind is calmer). Usually, people throw themselves aggressively into some form of work. Going to the cinema was your alternative, but unfortunately a movie only lasts two hours, and then you're back in the same situation. I suppose talking about the movie and defending it from trolls is also a form of work, especially now when it has just opened, so keep going and good luck with that! I hope you'll find peace eventually, with the passage of time.
As a gen Z kid, the Depp film just hits different. I've probably watched it close to ten times by now and it never gets old.

It's nostalgia. People who were adults in 2005 hated it and rightfully so. Depp played Wonka like a creepy Michael Jackson facsimile, it was awful.

Not gonna lie, I love the Johnny version the best. He adds more flavor to the character haha. And that Wonka was actually the one closest to the book adaptation. He was a guy with a dark past and didn’t trust people. But decided on Charlie because he was different and genuine from the others
Closer to the book doesn't always mean better in terms of FILM. Like when they inevitably remake the Wizard of Oz closer to the book... I don't care how dark and scary they make Oz or how much CGI they put in it to where you can count the hairs in Scarecrow's nose, the MGM 1939 version will always be superior, end of story
