Thanks for the review. To clarify, the holes on the plate are designed to reduce the pressure on LCD screen, as Mega 8K prints larger objects and the pressure increases with the printing objects. After tests, the holes on the plate are helpful.

Need someone to design a build plate hole punch.... an FDM male version that lines up perfectly with every perforated hole and pushes all cured resin out of them all in one hit

I completely understand the build plate having holes. I do love your idea of an FDM male version to push out any resin. Then you can spray some IPA to clean it and then you can dry it for your next print job.

After I remove the buildplate and print, I spray it down with a spray bottle and IPA over my waste bucket. Then wipe it down and pop it in the Wash N Cure Plus to get any remaining resin out. You could also place it in a Ultrasonic cleaner to heat up any stuck resin and soften it for removal, done that before on the Transform.

You know, that is a fantastic idea to help clean it out. Will give that a go. Didn’t even think it would fit in one of the wash station buckets

  • @BeerJingle
    @BeerJingle 3 года назад +7

What I do to get around the resin pooling in the holes is I use a shallow plastic container thats roughly the same size as the build plate which I put some alcohol or methylated spirits into. I then either dunk the build plate in the container or leave it in there for 5-10 minutes and wipe it off with a paper towel. I found it to be much faster than trying to scrape all the resin off or putting the plate on an angle and letting gravity do its thing

I've commented this on other videos.. You can prepare your files in whatever slicer you want (I use prusa slicer) then export to chitubox basic and hit slice for the encapsulation .ctb file. Yes, it's one more software step in the pipeline, but worst case, it's not a dealbreaker if you really want the big printer and chitubox doesn't play ball or whatever. I *highly* doubt there will come a day when you are somehow forced to do something like buy software or otherwise restrict your full pipeline to only using chitubox, because that is a great way to destroy your company. (see Adobe)

FYI, the SDK terms are now available for Chitubox and I can safely say that PrusaSlicer (or UVTools) will never be able to use the SDK without someone writing a generic adapter mechanism because Chitu has explicltly disallowed copyleft-licensed software (both PrusaSlicer/Slic3r and UV tools are Affero GPL3) from being used with their SDK. It's also a "you basically have to apply and we will maybe let you do it for one purpose".
So unless Chitu gets their heads out of their arses or these other manufacturers find a different vendor, you're very likely stuck.

About the printing speed, the problems seems to come from a light off delay that is around 6-7 seconds. If I slice with Chitubox, I have the issue. I tried the Liberating Mars application to convert my Lychee Slicer exported files to the encrypted one and my light off settings were the one that I was expecting and now I have “normal” printing time with the Mega 8K. I’m investigating that. But a light off delay is required with this amount of resin moved by such build plate.
About the holes in the build plate, the main goal is to reduce the pressure on the screen when lowering the build plate. I cleaned it twice yesterday without issue, but I’m not using the same tools as you. You need to remove gently the cured resin otherwise it will break like you show and it will be a major pain.
About the resin, for me, such printer need to stick with only one type and color of resin. Swapping is juste pure pain. Except that, this printer is a beast, I love it so far!

Plenty of no name companies selling much larger and heavier items on Amazon after all. It’s easier for companies to pass all the costs onto the customer and they know someone isn’t going to try to return it if they are not 100% happy. Appreciate the video as always Jesse. Wondering about the resolution compared to the 4K machines that many of us are using right now. Can you see a marked difference in the quality of prints on the 8k machines? Double the quality to the naked eye? Less? No difference? Would love to know your thoughts on this.

If I owned one of these I would print a tool that had pegs undersized to fit into the holes that had a dozen or more pegs on it in the correct center offset so you can just jam that tool in there a few times and clean out multiple holes at once. There's no way I'd use it if the clean up was an hour long affair.

Ah it does look so good but comes with so many issues and drawbacks I could never justify this.
What would be nice is a sort of mold block of metal that you can use to connect with the build plate so when you attach the two together it purges all the holes in one go. If I were buying this I'd pay extra for such a thing as that clean up process looks so painful.

Couldn't everyone just use a punch tool on the plate. I can understand those that are new to 3d printing crying over it but anyone who either has printed with supports or done any model kits/miniatures/gunpla this is nothing in terms of time. I'd be more upset with failed prints on a machine this size.

What are the exposure times you're getting by default? Looked like the site said 2.5-3 seconds on most profiles? I don't have Chitubox yet and won't have access to my main computer I would be running it on for another week due to work.
Also I'm wondering what the thickest layer you're able to print with it? On my Anycubic Photon Mono using Siraya Tech Blu clear (with a little added custom pigment from a previous print, but not mixing resins.) I'm getting 0.13 mm thicknesses without any delamination and I even tested up to 0.14 and 0.15 where it was getting delamination but I might be able to get it solid again with extra exposure time. This is printing a simple 15x15x10 shaped hollowed out box/cube shape (15 because 10 falls through the wash and cure station holes)
I've been asking the thickness question in many places, but instead of getting additional data points to go off of I just get stupid looks/comments. Sometimes prints don't need the additional detail and speed is more important.
