My personal wish list for a perfect 3d printer would be:
Large build plate (12+inches)
Heater unit
laser w/ xy of no more than 28um
autofeeder for resin
LED light for inside the machine for when the door is open
Built in air filter
pre-fixed flex plate
Magnetic stir for the reserve bottle of resin! (maybe a resin vat designed to allow for a magnetic stir mechanism as well)
This is why i think that Formlabs does way better in this space with the Form 3+/Form L for larger prints…They got the interface done right as well as their slicer software “preform” The fit an finish is good with all of formlabs gear.

I don't know if you read all comments on such old videos. If you are having issues scrapping prints off the build plate, I uses painter pallet knifes. Make sure you use the ones that have a rounded edges. The pallet knifes are super thin they easily scrap off all prints easily and not damaging the build plate.
Use boiling water on the bottom layer and it will come off the plate a lot easier.. it will make it go softer and expand a little. it works with normal and water washable resins the same. its about the temperature.
I have been doing this for quite some time now and this is by far the best way to remove prints.
Yes, there is a screen protector on it. We punctured our fep on one of our earlier prints and had to remove the protector as a result.

Sounds as if a lot of the cons are fixable via firmware updates. Machine and capabilities look wonderful. Thanks for covering slicer software, glad its not completely proprietary. Most of the print issues just seem to be calibration of settings. Thanks for covering.
The very best thing about resin prints is giant resin prints.
If that layer cure that was shown was actually real time, the 20,000 hours will be needed just to get a respectable amount of prints before it dies. I'd be curious to know the actual print volume it can cure vs a different machine. Time doesn't mean much when your comparing things that are so radically different.
Seems like it would just be a piece of glass, since it uses a scanning laser why would you need a screen?
Also, some of the complaints you're noting seem to be resolved in the Phenom Forge from Peopoly. I've been pretty pleased with it, its features, and its print quality.

This looks like an amazing prototype machine for a comparatively great price (for n SLA machine at least). Sadly it is clearly a prototype and a load of features are totally half-baked. No ability to deactivate the heater, inadequate screws on the plate and vat, limited and half-finished UI, slow slicing and slow printing.
A full production or refined version could be amazing. Luckily they blew through their Kickstarter target and easily sold enough to make the project worthwhile so a V2 is entirely possible (though I imagine they were hoping for something a lot more record-breaking with the kick starter.)
Honestly, this looks pretty amazing and is another great sign that the resin printing industry is maturing, and evolving and companies like Elegoo are being left behind with their generic cookie-cutter machines.
Keep it coming and lets see the Resin and FDM industries finally start to evolve again!!

I'd wait for the regular production units before buying. More expensive but they should have it more refined and problem free. That's just me though. It does look like a really nice large 3D resin printer. Looking forward to the reviews once they put this into regular production line to see what they have changed and updated.

I have to say I really am curious where most of the cost of this thing is. Obviously there are no economies of scale here so, yeah, that explains a good bit of it, but in a lot of ways it's also extremely simple. The reflective laser system sounds complicated sure, but IIRC that's the same general mechanism by which any generic laser-printer works by. (as in, 2d laser printers) I wonder if they priced themselves in a hole going for ultra-high build quality or something because it seems to be built excellently but the internals all seem relatively simple.
Again, the laser mechanism is fairly complicated, but it's tried and true technology that isn't doing anything too groundbreaking. The laser seems to just be mounted on a simple lead-screw. A slow pump and sensor while often only found on high-end machines are both very simple and cheap. It doesn't have any fancy wifi or cloud connectivity, or even a basic direct PC-connection, running purely from an SD card. Heaters really aren't that outrageously complicated or expensive either. I gotta say I'm just not seeing what part of this is 2k expensive.
Don't get me wrong, 100% impressive, super high-quality build, it's awesome, I'm not trying to downplay it here, but the early-bird donation tier lets you buy it for "only $1,550! 40% off MSRP!" indicating that the actual cost is somewhere around the 2 thousand usd mark. While this is impressive and high quality, I can't see any component or set of components that's actually that demanding manufacture-wise. The laser system is the most obviously demanding part since it's flicking a laser on and off *_extremely_* rapidly based on a spinning geometric mirror to precisely reflect it exactly where you want, but even if that sounds extremely complex it's not actually that hard to do computationally or mechanically as far as I'm aware. (again, it's how generic laser printers have worked for years now)
I'm wondering if it would have been better for them to go the Voron route or something and create an open design that people can build themselves, but sell pre-built or pre-sourced kits themselves. If it was much more 'you're paying for the simplicity of not having to build it or source the fairly exotic components' and much less 'you're paying for a high end device' I think the price would be much more palatable. As it stands it's in that weird space where I can only really describe it as 'vaguely icky'. It's not really manipulative, but knowing the basics of how the underlying tech works it feels like the price doesn't match the product. It's like one of those 'breathe new life into your PC!!!!!' linux-usbs; it does what it says on the tin, it *_will_* work, and you can easily argue that you *_are_* just paying for convenience, but it's juuuuust close enough that it also feels like it's taking advantage of ignorance. This feels like it would be great as a very open Voron-type product, but it's hard to shake that 'vaguely icky' feeling of a 2 thousand dollar price tag when most of these features feel like they couldn't have cost more than 50-100usd per. Extremely large and extremely-high resolution displays *_do_* get pricey fast, but redirected lasers don't really have that exponential cost rise as far as I'm aware (since they're working with fairly basic geometrical properties) so even the main-show I can't imagine being more than 5-600usd in-total. So ~100 for the simple touch-screen display and simple firmware, ~50-100 for the heater, ~50-100 for the detector and pump, we'd be looking more around 1k, not 2, and I really feel like a lot of those prices are fairly liberal even *_without_* multi-million economies of scale.
Granted, maybe I'm missing some single ultra-expensive component, but from what I know about this technology it just really feels, vaguely icky. Not nearly bad enough to call it out as an actual scam or con or anything, you're getting *_exactly_* what you pay for, but just barely bad enough to not feel perfectly clean if I were to endorse it either. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware you're also paying for all the dev-time and RnD and whatnot, but even so it just feels, ehhhhhhhhh.
This looks super cool, but I'm quite hesitant to back another 3d printer kickstarter after the mono x issues, the jupiter issues (delays etc), and even the saturn 2 initial machine issues.
Its sooo tempting though....
Always the option to wait and see how it goes as well. I’m really hoping they can provide some UI updates to the machine to help improve that + the slicing times are just ugh
I learnt my lesson with the CR10 Smart. Just be patient. Wait for a revision/refresh that fixes the issues that the kickstarter models will inevitably have.

I just don't understand the point of it, 10x hours on the laser vs a screen, but how much of that is lost to layer times. Along with added mechanical failure of the mirror.

It's very interesting to say the least. I think they need to have some sort of seal around the screen as a precaution. They also need to have a flex plate for the build plate. I don't outside of that because I'm not very tech savy.

Glad is has a door. Elegoo messed up with the new Jupiter removing the doors and adding that stupid lid.
this printer is WAAAYYYY OUT of my price range.. and i'm hesitent for some 3D printers from a kickstarter but it is rather more encouraging to see these companies actully send out demos to contenters showing this is more then just a proof of concept..
You also need a huge space for the machine & cleanup. But glad to see it in action

I know it's probably a pipe dream for certain technologies, but is like to see some resin printers with build plates in the same ratios as FDM printers. It will obviously never happen with LCD-based printers, due to cost. But for something based on lasers, I don't see why not.
I actually had seen the kickstarted advertisement several days ago and was looking at it so its awesome to immediately see your review for it afterwards. I had backed the Mega 8K and was maybe think I should back this one.
hello I heard his comment on the video the mega 8k screen dying at 200hrs I'm super confused as that less than 10 full days of printing was his just a dud?
He has the mega 8k review on here so I'm sure that video can give a hint as to what happened. It was most likely that he had a pre-release version and not the later versions that were sent out .
I canceled my backed mega 8k order when the chitubox controversy happened. I didn't want a printer that was locked up by a software company. Atleast now you can use lychee and other softwares but at the time it didn't look like it was going to change.

Yeah agreed. Hoping I can get my hands on that at some point to see how much faster it works. I’m also guessing the default specs could be improved a bit for print times
To me the possibility of improving the laser is actually one of the biggest selling points, if they can continue to offer improved laser modules, or even perhaps enabling the use of tandem lasers this could alleviate much of the lengthy print times
@@UncleJessy they claim to be 30% faster with the upgrade, but they haven't confirmed that information since I asked. For over $500 for an assumption, I'd rather stay with the original. I'm giving it a try since I'm in the VIP for a great price. Seeing you put it next to the Mega 8k, now my 8k seems small. 😆. Thank you Uncle Jessy for the review.
@@Gabe_Herdz Yeah, I am 50/50 on it right now. I love the idea and was highly considering it. I almost wish it was actually a little smaller, the ideal would be like 10-12 inches. I had the super early bird in my cart at one point but I decided to skip it because it just is too big. Anything beyond about 10 inches I rather do in FDM anyways. I instead am considering something more like the photon M3 8k for 500 dollars. What I really would love to see is the autofeeder on a medium sized resin printer.
@@MaethorDerien I agree completely, if this machine was 10-11" instead and closer to a Jupiter price it would be much more of a contender in the market. Still would be hard to stomach the print times though
If things are TOO well adhered into the build plate, you need to decrease initial exposure, looks like the handles could easily be swapped out with replacements. Heater being "powered" when the printer is on, won't hurt it. If the thermostat sees "higher" temps than its set point, it just won't activate the heater. Needs kypton tape on the edges of the glass panel for sure.
It looks great. Im gonna look to grab one an SLA printer further down the road.
This printer has no place printing models, and from the results I have seen I would question it's place anywhere. It has a few nice quality of life features like the built in heater, resin feeder, auto bed levelling etc but the print speed, quality, lack of precision and a seeming lack of attention to detail I can't see it being worth the price, even at the kickstarter price. The size itself makes it pretty useless for most applications and the ergonomics of that scale of machine outweigh most of the benefits. Maybe if you do industrial prototyping it would have value but even then there are far better options already tried and tested on the market. (I know I sound super negative, it does have some redeeming features as I said first but I think the team have tried adding too many mod cons and haven't really delivered on performance)
For a large printer you want more speed not less. Waiting for hours just to find out you forgot to support something would be disheartening.
seems like the size makes it a bit of a pain to use. The auto resin feed and heater chamber are great features.

If printer life is a major selling point then don’t all DLP printers pretty much outclass this? They print equally as fast as MSLA ones and also rely on reflective technology.

OK, but it takes how long compared to a standard mono screen printer? It's got to be significantly slower.
So what about the resin in the tube for the auto feeder? How is that cleaned out when changing resin (color or type)? Also Charcoal filter that needs replacing regularly doesn't appeal to me either.
I haven’t swapped it yet but you should be able to just turn it on and I’m guessing it will suck some of the left over resin out of the tube. But assuming some will end up mixing.

I wonder if that sd card has some proprietary formatting or files embedded that it needs to work. Kinda like the original Mono can't use just any memory stick for files.
now does the 20,000 hours take into account the much longer build times? Feel like if it prints 20x slower, then you'll get the same number of prints.
Great video as always from a fellow Rochestarian, I will not be getting this. Heated resin and auto filling isn't worth the extra money especially considering the slicing time, lower print quality and print time. Imagine a print failing after all that considered. Ill stick with my Saturn 2!

Can you do separate individual parts with resin? This would be to make large objects. I have a Ender 5 plus but, I like the detail of resin.
We had an issue with the hands. Which once noticed was fixed very quickly by the team at Wicked 3d. When you print them again there should be a file that says repaired.

@@UncleJessy yea I’m active in the berserk and wicked patreons and those guys are top notch when it comes to fixing stuff. Like literally hours sometimes. They have a great team and we just try to back them up with info on booboo spots if and when we locate them.

Its about 2 cm bigger build volume than the Phenom L but yeah the screen is an advantage.
Hey can you please answer a question? Are the prints SMOOTH? I've noticed on a lot of the examples they have some kind of sandpaper texture to them. Though the details are crispy, they're "rough" to the eye.
hey Jessy, so I just got this printer and unfortunately hand some fail prints using standard ABS like resin. I had multiple objects on my build plate, some smaller some bigger. The bigger parts printed fine but the smaller parts all fell off the supports. Can you share the support setting you were using for your print? I had them set to .4 which is my standard setting on my other printer which obviously are smaller and how lower peel force.
I kickstarted this project. Wish I hadn't. It arrived broken from the factory I believe because it had internal damage. The customer service has not only been unhelpful but actively sarcastic about it and I'm very f****** over it.
I was initially tempted by the print size potential of this thing but - No saved profiles, longer print times, longer slice times... I'm going to pass.
So, this or a phrozen mega 8k?
Why would you ever need this lol. The prints don't look any better than my Saturn 2, and realistically what are you printing in resin that is going to actually utilize that build volume? For prints that take 30 hours, and files that take 30 minutes to slice? Count me out chief this just sounds like way more hassle than it would ever be worth.
Some people print in 1/4-1/3 scale. Smh.
The next printer I was going to get was the Mega 8K but this one looks nice too but I will rather wait and see until more and more people get one.
I'm not insane in thinking a screen dying after 100-200 hours is clearly a defect in the product or something like shipping damage, right?
There's no way you should have to pay to replace a screen after that little use time.

What resin printer would you recommend for someone who is both a novice and on a low end budget? i love the details a resin printer can create over a plastic printers and i usually see you using a resin printer. I figured youd be the one to ask.
Halot One was recommended to me as great starter point. It depends on what size you need.
The Elegoo Saturn was my first printer, and it's been an amazing workhorse for me!!! I'd start there.
NOPE as soon as you said its SLA I wasnt interested anymore, print time is way to slow
Slow or print an entire statue or diorama in a piece and not have to worry about warping, gap filling etc.
I suppose one great advantage though is longevity of parts?
Please do a review of all the damaged 3D printers shipped worldwide. Maybe tell people that Chitubox for Windows is the ONLY option as none of the other slicers are supported. Besides receiving a damaged printer, this is totally unusable for Macintosh users.
Guessing you didn’t notice the pour spout in the back left corner of the vat before you started emptying it. Great video though

How does this compare to the Elegoo Jupiter? I still haven't gotten a successful print off that thing. I would stay clear of resin printing and go with FDM.

what is the size of the exterior dimensions?
Is that a peristaltic pump for the Auto feeder?
They are great to feed exact feed rates (not needed here) but they tend to wear through the tubing and leak so will need regular checks/maintenance.
If it starts leaking presumably it will just pump out the entire bottle into the side compartment as it will never hit it target level in the vat and stop or does it error out if the pump runs too long?
Also with a peristaltic in the machine you could run it in reverse and submerge the vat end feed in the liquor to back empty most of the vat?
Don’t you save the resin profiles in the slicer?

In regards to the Mega 8K, 1-200 hours of a screen life doesn't sound right.
Both of the screens that I've used for it lasted well into the 1500 hour ranges, I think Phrozen may have done you dirty with some bad screens maybe. Shame to hear that slicing takes so long, reminds me of 2020 chitu, where often times setting up a print would take 15 minutes or more for seemingly no reason. The machine looks promising, looking forward to seeing what you do with it in the future

What's the lifespan of an Elegoo Jupiter? I'm looking to buy a large resin printer but low print life is a huge deal breaker for me.
I want one but i would need work studio to house this machine and others
why is nobody copying how formlabs removes their prints, that should be the new standers by now. you press a button and it bends the plate and done, not rocket science guys
3:28 lol SLA doesn't mean, it's a laser printer. SLA is an acronym for stereolithography and this is just another word for resin printing. Like FDM (fused deposition modeling) is just the name for the filament printing method...
I cannot see better quality print jobs than a MSLA 4k or above... in fact in the video appears some layer lines...the only nice features are the print size area and the heater, for me is not worth at all, even the print times are greater.
I thinks SLA tech for standard consumer/enthusiast is a no go, only suited for companies with no rush in production time and need to use specialized resins that only works with SLA.
Yeahhhh, after I got burned by the IVI 3d printer, I'm never touching Kickstarter ever again

was interested in this printer, but ended up not backing the campaing due to poor communication from the manufacturer and people who got a machine for review, didn't feel comfortable betting all that money
How much slower is it than say a mega 8k? Also since it scans is it faster if you bunch your models up in the x or the y direction?

I had been saving up for a V2 of the X1C… this seems like a much better value especially with advertised 20k hrs…. 😱😱😱😱😱😖😖😖🤬🥶🥶🥶 so many decisions on limited budgets.
For 2600 seems a bit excessive for the kickstarted not even close to this price they are asking
The touch screen looks very, after thought-ish, nothing is finished or polished. And why would you need a phycial button to pause the print when you have a giant touch screen to fit it on? Prints look meh, and I can only imagine the headache to fix or replace a part on this if it breaks. I've learned my lesson with printers from kickstarter, it's better to just wait for stuff to hit mainstream production to get an accurate guage of what you're getting and quality. Snap makers J1 and Anker make were a disasters. Never again Kickstarter, never again.
