- The BBC produced a song for the Horrible Histories children's program called 'Been Here From the Start' which makes several spurious, misleading and outright false claims about black people living in ancient Britain. From Cheddar man to Septimius Severus and the Moors, I debunk the lies contained in the BBC video and present the truth.
Clips of the BBC video are included under UK fair dealing law which allows such use for criticism of the copyrighted material.

But the scientist said to BBC, that "the possibility that some of those in the graves were Muslim cannot be completely ruled out", and much was made out of it. (Of course it was factual truth: Such a thing could never be completely proved or disproved.)
They showed the horrible histories video at my daughters school. Let's just say there was a lot of angry parents and a lot of complaints
I am glad the parents did, but schools seem to be trying to change lots of things not just this. I would have given my notice if I had to teach some of the things teachers have to and some probably have.....
Thats good to know. It's would be pretty bad for there to be no reaction, but there really eeds to be a much stronger reaction. Mabe it is the beginning of something, as a people we are far too tolerant.

I am of North African (Algerian) descent. I am sick and tired of my ancestors’ (Berbers) history being erased by the BBC and others. Stolen in fact! Most North Africans today are Mediterranean looking, and there is a great diversity in phenotypes. I only have to look at my own family. Here in the UK most people think I am white French, until I tell them my ethnic origins. I think I would have blended in nicely in Roman Africa, which by the way was a relatively small territory compared to the continent it covers today. For example Egypt wasn’t in Africa, Egypt was just Egypt.
I am half-Moroccan Berber, half-English. Historically, the only reason that North Africans look Mediterranean is because Moors as Muslims (Arabs, Berbers, sub-Saharan Africans and their mixed offspring) settled right across Southern Europe, placing Arab-Berber-sub-Saharan African genealogical lineage into the Portuguese, Spanish, Corsicans, Sardinians, Sicilians, Italians and Maltese of today. Before Islam, there was no settlement of Arabs, Berbers or sub-Saharan Africans across the Mediterranean at this scale, so Italian Romans would have been much lighter-skinned and more European-looking than what they are now. Iberia is a slight exception because the Phoenicians and later Carthaginians colonised it before and during Roman times. Greeks look darker today than they would have been in Antiquity because the Ottoman Turks invaded and changed their genetic aesthetic too

I'm Slavic and I often criticize our Slavic tendency towards pathetic nationalism and exaggeration in almost every way, but when I see this other extreme that is present in the west, I am no longer sure which is worse. And I don't know why do I take it so personally about the things that are happening in England, for example, but lately I really do have a feeling that the attack on Germanic, Norse, Celtic, and even Latin culture is in some way an attack on "my" culture. My culture is primarily Slavic, but somehow it is closely related to Germanic, Latin, and even Celtic culture, so when someone outside that circle tries to diminish the value of any of them, I feel equally threatened. I think that for the first time in history we have to admit to each other that we are more similar than different, because otherwise we will all disappear, and to others we have always been the same anyway.
Western cultures is not your culture so try not to associate yourself with it. You have nothing to do with it.

I have a friend from Ghana recently arrived in Canada . At lunch we were talking about various holidays celebrated by different ethnic groups . "" Kwansza " came up and my friend asked what holiday that was ? One of the other guys at the table explained it was a " West African Harvest Festival" We also had another African seated with us from Nigeria who also was perplexed about the fact to the best of his knowledge he never heard of such a festival . We later found out it was a fake celebration concocted by a black university professor in the 1960s or 70s to counter our national " Thanks Giving Day" in the US and Canada. Creating myths does not make them fact or gives you any credibility.

As a palaeontologist with training in archaeology and palaeontology, I'm ashamed at how so much of STEM is being twisted towards parroting warped political agendas. There are those whom would claim otherwise, though actively behave as though every shred and crumb of 'the science' T M is gospel. And yes, it is the case that we shouldn't be, inversely, lured into the trap of science denialism either. What matters are the observable truths, and the common sense, scientific inference based ideas, such as those you presented. Where what we _do_ know must be spoken honestly and stridently in the face of the political biases of the deceitful. And the media filth like BBC News are doing this all the time (not just with humans)
They will often recontextualise and twist the latest scientific discoveries, to feather with some political agenda. Or, sloppy journalism will create the 'perfect storm' and ultimately mislead many people. The relationship between mainstream, popular journalism, and the biological and earth sciences, has _always_ been fraught and unpredictable, at the best of times. Sensationalism is common. Big egos wanting to make even bigger names for themselves - or simply wanting to secure more funding and research grants from this or that institutional body - will sometimes, seemingly stop at nothing and stoop as low as they need to as so to win acclaim amongst peers.
And while generally, 'peer review' is good, and imbues higher quality that multiple people had argued over it and come to particular conclusions, the problem is, if STEM is increasingly overrun with leftists, where is the debate? They might argue over the dimensions or the implications of something, though they will outright know which things to avoid. Political expediency in STEM is obviously going to play into the _deafening silence_ of so many tenured professors and doctors. People, whom under normal circumstances, should know better. People whom are too scared to lose their cushty jobs in a fancy university, and whom don't want to rock the boat or get attacked by the mobs of baying 'progressives' infesting the student body these days (besides the genuine observation, that many of these old tutors and professors are/were dyed-in-the-wool Marxist Socialists in their own, Hippy youths; or if not that, something ultimately similar and a variation on a theme; that of being absolute plonkers)
We're living in a day and age where illusion, deception and misinformation are as widespread as they could possibly be, and yet, a lot of 'normies' will lap up the MSM guff without question. It is at least _part_ of why many palaeontologists are deeply wary of talking to the press and don't want to get taken out of context. Imagine disgruntled colleagues of those palaeoanthropologists and geneticists working on Cheddar Man, and knowing it was a giant lie forming to be fed like red meat to the MSM. Now, if they even existed (it's hard to tell, due to their obvious silence), they said nothing anyway. Because why would they? Why would they let themselves get dragged in the papers and by the court of public opinion (as in, the student body waiting to go after anyone breaking ranks), when they could say nothing and have an easy life? That's the problem.
Once the dishonest begin to creep in and push political activism within STEM itself (something I naively, once believed was beyond reproach and 'above that sort of thing' prior to actually going to university and realising the abject truth of the matter; human nature is human nature, and those pathetic little badges called degrees people like to wave around like it makes them Lords of the Earth need to be reconsidered on a grand scale in my view), then it's only a matter of time before the environment becomes so hostile that real, substantial debate over many aspects of scientific subjects, begins to become tamer and more of an echo chamber.
There will _always_ be countless ways in which two scientists can fall out, disagree with each other or other act contrarian to one another until the cows come home. But when false and provably incorrect 'data' is being pushed as fact, that shows how far the rot has spread in STEM. The people responsible should and probably do know they are not just in the wrong, but part of a massive deception which has only served to add fuel to the fire of the ongoing culture war in 21st century Britain. It's a disastrous intervention from out of the blue, which has no basis in fact or any true evidence. They went into it with confirmation biases, spurred on by their doubtlessly equally posh and misguided mates and this is the result. And they won't have the decency to step forward and admit it, and call it out for the mistake it was. Partly to save face, partly to avoid the utter wrath of those in the general public whom _wanted_ Cheddar Man to mean something he really, really did not.

In a general sense, the state of public discourse over palaeontological and archaeological matters is about as abysmal as you'd expect, and I'm sure as a Historian you know what I'm getting at there. However, things start to really veer off the edge of the charted maps of sanity when you throw 21st century politicisation into the mix as well. It's a complete mess. People whom should not be brashly weighing into complex palaeontological and archaeological matters, seem to be very vocal about it everywhere now. I wouldn't go up to a carpenter and tell him his business on woodwork. Nor would I pretend to know better than a good mechanic about the inner workings of a car. I stay in my lane(s) And palaeontology has a lot of broad lanes to be fair. It's a greatly interdisciplinary, obligatorily polymath field (or 'field of fields and subfields')
In palaeontology, Dinosaurs have long been the 'pin ups' and 'star attractions', much as the Romans, Egyptians and Aztecs can often be (for instance) for archaeology. It isn't so hard to imagine why a palaeoanthropologist aka palaeo' or archaeo' expert, specialising in human evolution and anatomy, during the Quaternary Period, might be drawn to making waves in the papers. It might not be a surprise why a generally less popularised time, will be thrust into the limelight by those whom specialise in it. Dinosaurs are often accused, cynically and rather childishly in my subject by some amongst us whom think they are 'better than you' for _not_ liking Dinosaurs (jokingly or not; either way, it's very, very pathetic and sad; believe me, I saw this happening to it's very worst extent in a way that impacted/or risked impacting me in a deeply serious way) As such, _some_ palaeontologists are kind of aloof about Dinosaurs and try and make anything that isn't a Dinosaur, the centre of attention, to be special snowflakes or something. I'm _not_ saying that is why the situation with Cheddar Man arose, of course. I'm just pointing out how puerile things can get.
When the bizarre and spectacular Ordovician Anomalocaridid _Aegirocassis benmoulae_ from about 480 million years ago, in the Early Ordovician Period of Morocco's Fezouata Formation, was discovered in 2015, the palaeontological world knew that it was not, in fact, related to whales. It's an invertebrate. It was about ~2/5th of a billion years older than the oldest Cetacean. Yet due to the specific trophic (feeding) method and behaviour of this beguiling creature, that of a filter-feeder, obviously, a connection in terms of convergent evolution was drawn right away. Not because anyone really believed it was living that way to the same scale and size of whales, but because it was superficially very similar and showed that this behaviour and strategy to filter prey from the water column, has been around long before Cetaceans (particularly Baleen Whales) started to do it too.
And technically, this sort of thing has evolved again and again and again, and not even solely in terms of fully-aquatic animals bound to the sea. For instance, some Pterosaurs seem to have behaved not too dissimilarly to Flamingos, filtering small crustaceans from saline waters (and they are Archosaurians, both; Pterosaurs, being cousins of Dinosaurs, and Birds being a type of advanced, Dinosaurian Archosauriform in truth) The point was that amongst the scientists involved, they knew what they meant. But what did the tabloid headline in 2015 say?
"Ancestor of whales discovered" etc or words to that effect. A miscommunication of contexts and terms, and the sheer ignorance of the sensationalist journalists. So to some large extent, this sort of thing can happen. It's like when ANY Dinosaur which happens to be a Theropod is found, the MSM will often trot out things like, 'COUSIN OF T REX FOUND' or 'MINI T REX FOUND', because that is what they know and how they commonly contextualise it.
Is it completely pointless most of the time, as well as being ignorant of the wider Theropod lineages spanning >167 million years of non-Avian Dinosaur and about as much Avian Theropod Dinosaur history? Of course. But that won't stop the MSM from blurting out nonsense about things they simply do not understand and will not typically be bothered to _try_ and understand. This starts to become even worse, by multiple orders of magnitude, when dealing with completely obscure (to normies) groups like the long dead Ordovician Anomalocaridid filter-feeders from Morocco 480 Ma BP. They don't care about most Dinosaurs let alone something as _comparatively_ distant and unknown as that, to the wider audience. They just care about selling papers and getting clicks, and that is the way it has always been with them.
Ultimately, when you mix the general ignorance and stupidity of the MSM with the political activism of _some_ people in STEM, it's a recipe for disaster. Leftists are running riot in palaeontology and archaeology and have been for decades at this point. By itself, this _does not_ invalidate _most_ of the things they are doing or saying. But decisively, it means that when it comes to key decisions, major publications and the peer review process, that they heavily outnumber right of centre voices within the subject, typically holding all the power, funding and status within the subject. This is not a grand conspiracy it's just more of an emergent phenomenon in the last 50 years in STEM.
And generally speaking, I was oblivious to it _until_ I went to university myself and saw just how corrupt some aspects of it is. It truly removed the scales from my eyes, in a way. It showed me just how biased things are. There are many species now being named in ways which are openly being called, 'anti-colonialist' and 'respecting the global South', or 'respecting native indigenous cultures' (often in the form of patronisingly naming something in a next to irrelevant random native language you will never be able to remember in a month of Sundays, and making ridiculous, unpronounceable names that are thoroughly discordant with anything previously seen in Greco-Latinised scientific naming conventions.
It began in the 1960's and 1970's for the most part, with portmanteaus of something 'non-Western' and the suffix usually still having '-saurus' if dealing with an array of reptiles) Nowadays, it's overt and in your face. The leftists in palaeontology decry 'old Victorian racists' and try and insinuate that palaeontology in the 21st century carries the guilt of having been part of promoting 'imperialist narratives'. It's not seen for what it is by most of the outside world, but if you know palaeontology and love it the way I do, and always have, you can see what is happening.
There are a lot of bad faith actors overrunning the subject and gatekeeping different opinions from theirs, out of the subject. And in their ongoing 'Scientism' and stagnant arrogance, you get things like this (Cheddar Man debacle) happening. It will keep happening, and a negative, toxic feedback loop between the dodgy MSM and the politically motivated amongst the ranks of STEM, will continue to sully my beloved subject's reputation. I resent it on every level, in ways even most palaeontologists simply don't understand.
In many regards, it is a hopeless prospect; because it's next to defenceless in terms of stopping wokesters overrunning it. It's already happened and had already happened by the 1990's. They are now just doing victory laps and nobody is going to stop it. I detest what has been inflicted on my once illustrious subject.

What is historical truth anyway? Caesar's conquest of Gaul is a historical record, it doesn't mean any of it is true. If you want to tell African history, or the history of sub-Saharan people, just tell actual real African history. Instead of lying about the history of other cultures. It's an insult to Britain and the British people, as well as Sub-Saharan Africans, ironically enough.

I love history, it was one of the only school subjects I was good at. After school I liked it so much never stopped learning. Movies and shows that loosely portrayed history were always around, but they would always disclaimer it. It seems like in the past 4 years we have crazies trying to actually mislead and skew history for people. Its very dangerous what they are doing and will cause nothing but problems.
I didn't realize that horrible histories had fallen so much.
