In my case, I was surprised when I took a DNA ancestry test. I really thought that because my ancestors (at least the past two hundred years or so) were so rooted in the south-east of England (From London down to Sussex) I thought that my DNA would be almost totally English. However, when I got the results, my DNA turned out to be 48% Scandinavian, 39% Scottish, Irish and Welsh, 11% Iberian. Not a trace of 'Ancient English' to be seen. Given that the Vikings invaded Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as Portugal and Spain, I think I can probably trace most of my ancestry to Scandinavian countries - especially Denmark. @@annglaister

To be honest, as an American there is sometimes propaganda that is used to make us hate other Europeans. We are told that the other Europeans are better than us for various reasons. People like the Germans, the British, the Scandinavians, the Russians, etc. For some of us, the way we deal with that is to despise them for it, not realizing that they actually feel that we are better than them. It's a poisonous cycle of envy and stupidity. It's so divisive and ridiculous that I think it leaves people incredibly open to seeing such enmity be subverted. In a way, these evil actions may bring about more unity than there ever has been.

Thank you for letting the world of English people and people of English descent in other nations know that not only is it "ok" to be English but that we have just as much right to be proud of our heritage as any other person of another ethnicity! Im an American of mixed european descent but mostly English with an Anglo-Saxon last name. So many Americans, like me, find themselves pressured to cling to any part of their heritage other than English or American because "we're the evil colonizers." They find themselves leading with the little bit of Welsh, Irish or Scottish they have in them when the majority of their ancestry is in fact English, the reason being because being ethnically English makes you apparently "boring" and "basic" at best or simply a descendant of "the bad guys" in everyone else's story at worst. We're told that we English-Americans dont have a culture, that we're not actually an ethnicity, that being American and English are just nationalities and not ethnicities, yet my ancestors have been in America for hundreds of years and before that they were in England stretching back centuries to the Normans, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Britons...so if American and English aren't the terms for my ethnicity...what is?? Thanks to channels like yours, I've come to understand what my ethnicity is, and I'm proud of it! Just like anyone of another ethnicity should be proud of their ethnic background. No ethnicity is infallible, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't each feel good about our own unique ethnic heritages. Long live the English.

Proud Englishman here. England has a complex history, yet it is also very rich. Every county has its own distinct history, society, people, accents, regional identities, and (sometimes weird) place-names. The Anglo-Saxons, Britons, Vikings, normans - with the practice of Paganism and Christianity - they created England, which is why England is so complex, yet so awesome, having a rich history and culture.
Most historians, archaeologists, linguicists etc are all very proud and patriotic people. It's because they love their ancestors, and understand that they must keep their civilisation alive, for them.

I'm an American national, born and raised in the USA, a lot of settler/colonist Massachusetts stock on my mother's side. My genealogical records pan out to about 1/3rd English, 1/3rd Irish, and 1/3rd German. DNA results pan out to about 3/4ths British and 1/4th German with some tiny amounts of Scandinavian, Baltic, and French. Ultimately, I consider myself to be ethnically British since that makes up the bulk of my background. Cheers to you from across the pond, brother.
I’m roughly 56% Brythonic/ Gaelic and 44% Germanic/scandi. Im from Cardiff my father is Irish and mother Welsh so if I’ve got that much Germanic dna I’d imagine the further east in England you go you’ll find even more

I think it's important you expand on this, and include you touching on the agendas and politics of modern day in one or several volumes of books. So many of us in the UK have Scandinavian DNA and share so many genetic traits, hooray for our Viking and trading ancestors 😊
In my case, I was surprised when I took a DNA ancestry test. I really thought that because my ancestors (at least the past two hundred years or so) were so rooted in the south-east of England (From London down to Sussex) I thought that my DNA would be almost totally English. However, when I got the results, my DNA turned out to be 48% Scandinavian, 39% Scottish, Irish and Welsh, 11% Iberian. Not a trace of 'Ancient English' to be seen. Given that the Vikings invaded Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as Portugal and Spain, I think I can probably trace most of my ancestry to Scandinavian countries - especially Denmark. @@annglaister

To be honest, as an American there is sometimes propaganda that is used to make us hate other Europeans. We are told that the other Europeans are better than us for various reasons. People like the Germans, the British, the Scandinavians, the Russians, etc.
For some of us, the way we deal with that is to despise them for it, not realizing that they actually feel that we are better than them.
It's a poisonous cycle of envy and stupidity. It's so divisive and ridiculous that I think it leaves people incredibly open to seeing such enmity be subverted. In a way, these evil actions may bring about more unity than there ever has been.

Excellent lecture. Been interested in learning more about my Anglo-Saxon heritage. My dad's from Essex, his dad from Suffolk, as far as I can trace, everyone is from that area. Mom's family is from Norway. I've only recently come to realize the guilt foisted upon me throughout my adult life has been nonsense intended to strip me of any identity with something larger than myself, and that I'm not "a bad guy" for simply existing. Feels good. Thanks for presenting the facts without bias or ulterior motive!

Whilst the theory is true, the way it’s presented and spun is usually really deceiving. Claiming that “we are all Africans” is akin to claiming that all Europeans are Russian because a great deal of our ancestors originate on the Pontic-Caspian steppe in southern Russia. I believe we’ll reach the peak of immigration into Europe fairly soon and after that it’ll plateau and decline, hopefully with immigrant families returning to their homelands. A decent step for accelerating this would be offering incentives for educated migrants to return and bring prosperity to their people. It’s important to remember that mass immigration principally harms the third world, and not to treat the migrants themselves as enemies.

Thank you for letting the world of English people and people of English descent in other nations know that not only is it "ok" to be English but that we have just as much right to be proud of our heritage as any other person of another ethnicity!
Im an American of mixed european descent but mostly English with an Anglo-Saxon last name. So many Americans, like me, find themselves pressured to cling to any part of their heritage other than English or American because "we're the evil colonizers." They find themselves leading with the little bit of Welsh, Irish or Scottish they have in them when the majority of their ancestry is in fact English, the reason being because being ethnically English makes you apparently "boring" and "basic" at best or simply a descendant of "the bad guys" in everyone else's story at worst.
We're told that we English-Americans dont have a culture, that we're not actually an ethnicity, that being American and English are just nationalities and not ethnicities, yet my ancestors have been in America for hundreds of years and before that they were in England stretching back centuries to the Normans, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Britons...so if American and English aren't the terms for my ethnicity...what is?? Thanks to channels like yours, I've come to understand what my ethnicity is, and I'm proud of it! Just like anyone of another ethnicity should be proud of their ethnic background. No ethnicity is infallible, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't each feel good about our own unique ethnic heritages. Long live the English.

England has a complex history, yet it is also very rich. Every county has its own distinct history, society, people, accents, regional identities, and (sometimes weird) place-names.
The Anglo-Saxons, Britons, Vikings, normans - with the practice of Paganism and Christianity - they created England, which is why England is so complex, yet so awesome, having a rich history and culture.
Most historians, archaeologists, linguicists etc are all very proud and patriotic people. It's because they love their ancestors, and understand that they must keep their civilisation alive, for them.
As an Anglo-American, I definitely relate to my loyalist ancestors. I love Britain and it's people, and I love the fact that I carry the genes of that island within me

I'm an American national, born and raised in the USA, a lot of settler/colonist Massachusetts stock on my mother's side. My genealogical records pan out to about 1/3rd English, 1/3rd Irish, and 1/3rd German. DNA results pan out to about 3/4ths British and 1/4th German with some tiny amounts of Scandinavian, Baltic, and French. Ultimately, I consider myself to be ethnically British since that makes up the bulk of my background. Cheers to you from across the pond, brother.

I think it's important you expand on this, and include you touching on the agendas and politics of modern day in one or several volumes of books. It's important coming generations know all of this history, and likely the gatekeepers of information will have an even tighter hold on narratives given to society in the next few decades making your knowledge all the more valuable.

Presumably the emigration of those like my colonial ancestors from England/Britain to America in the 17th and 18th centuries had little net effect on total British population numbers given the demographic "explosion" in Britain throughout that period.

The fact is most of the inventions that created our modern comfortable life, came from Europe, and in particular Britain.
As an Anglo, I can assure you: English is an ethnicity 100%. For me: the English identity, language, culture, laws, literature, surnames and place-names, all have deep meanings - they have Anglo-Saxon origin. When I think of England, I think of the countryside, pubs, sunday roast, fry-up, folk music, comedy, sports, English gardens, people that look like me (ie: blond hair, blue eyes, ginger beard).
Abdul from Afghanistan will emigrate to England, but he will have no interest in the England I know.
