    those PSU's can be dangerous, the caps hold enough energy to seriously burn or blow a chunk off the tip of your finger, ask me how i know lmao. i had the pattern of the pins burned into my finger for a couple weeks, and that was AFTER i (thought) i discharged them fully with a screw driver, cant imagine how bad it would have been at full power...

    Thank you so much Andrew, my ps4 fat gave the brod today. i watched your video, took apart the power supply. cleaned all the contacts with IPA and used a hair dryer on all the solders. PS4 came back to life afterwards. You are the champ!

    Excellent video. The side by side comparison of symptoms is brilliant since they behave fairly similarly. That part of your video told me I had a PS issue so I kept watching to see how to pull it out and troubleshoot it. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the transformer and found it in the exact same state as the one in your video... slightly raised from the board, both wires pulled off the pins. I'm an electronics tech so I'll be taking these parts to work tomorrow to use our soldering bench to try to make the same repair you did. I'll report back with the results.

    When the visual inspection turned out good and there's nothing bad-looking, the first thing to do is to check the fuse for continuity. Easy to replace and quite often the reason why you have a completely dead system. Oh, and on the Slim it's also probably a good choice to check if the power button board is actually connected. I had a Slim where it wasn't. And I was the first one to open it up. System acts completely dead (I didn't check if I could start it with a controller), I opened it up, took the PSU apart, checked everything I could think of with my multimeter, swapped over another PSU, still nothing. Was annoyed that I had to take it apart (the PS4 slim has way too many screws), turned it around and saw that somehow that stupid ribbon cable from the power button board had come lose. Plugged it back in, PS4 works perfectly.

    Guys, if you cleaned your PS4 and have a problem getting the PS4 to turn on or it turns on then off, you may have put the power supply back in
    wrong. Make sure the two long metal pieces are straight and not bent to where it reaches the power brick. Not placing it back in correctly also
    may make it hard to put the other plastic back on and difficult to put the screws back in the PS4. Went through this myself. Hopes that's the
    case and you too can save your money.

      Had one come in once, where one of those prongs was bent against the other and they both were in the same hole in psu. All I needed to do was bend it back straight and the machine came alive.

    Mine is no doubt a sibling of the gal on the right. I have a 1215a, and have sent it in twice. This will be the third. I keep getting the same system back,even after explaing that i build computers for a living, and know that the repair is not your everyday hard drive or software swap. What has me completely stumped is that mine will 80% of the time repeat the blue flick to dead, and depending on the amount of time from last unsuccessful attempt to full boot the system will operate longer. Overheating somewhere initially was the suspect, but was ruled out when the blue flick evolved and can shutdown the system within 2 minutes even after days of sitting disconnected. But the damn thing decided to totally mindf..K me yesterday.I got the blue flick,dead,but got a full boot after 4 to 5 back to back replug attempts! Now the strange part is that its still running now! Matter of fact, im using it to post this message. Im totally stumped, and starting to think my system has become aware!!!! Just joking, what would you do with this strain of the blue flick?

    My PS4 slim was off, just a beep when trying to connect, no video, no cooler spinning, no going into safe mode, I did not accept disks. Nothing worked.
    So I put the motherboard of ps4 in the heated oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes, and now it responds, accepts and ejects the disk, synchronizes the control via bluetooth but does not give video and blue light pulsates. I have read in some places that may have relation with the PSU ... Have you ever picked up a case where the console pulsates blue, but does not give video and does not enter safe mode?

    Champion, i had the same issue on a ADP-240CR but it was the marginally smaller transformer next to the 2 big main caps. my guess the console took a tumble? as it actually broke the transformer in half on the bottom on one side of the 3 poles that attach to the board. 1 single core wire broke away from one of the poles, shorted out and took out the Q5 mosfet and the fuse together. replaced those and all working sweet again.

    Hello! My ps4 has the same issue like the right ps4 in your video were when I turn it on, blue light comes on for a split second, heard two clicks then shuts off so I knew it was a power supply issue and bought a new power supply but I was wondering why my ps4 still does the two clicks and shuts off after replacing it with the new one? Can it be just the new power supply that I bought is also defective or maybe something's wrong with the motherboard?

    Hi Andrew,
    Thanks so much for your videos! I'm blown away by the way you can fix hardware issues as good as in factories.
    I currently have a BLOD issue which first seems to be a motherboard issue (2sc blue light, hard drive noise, fan start working, then I can "switch off" the console (i know it thanks to the beep) and switch it on again).
    However, I tested the power supply with a multimeter and the main output (where the two long spikes plug), deliver 2V instead of 12V.
    Did you get the same voltage during your tests?
    Many thanks again!

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  8 лет назад +1

      No it should show 12v but only very briefly on a 2 second BLOD - if it powers off after a couple of seconds depending on your multimeter it may not refresh quickly enough to show the short spike which could explain why you're only seeing 2v. By all means though try a different PSU if you have one to hand but I think yours will be an APU issue. Cheers.

    Sometimes my PS4 behaves like the one on the left, but other times I am able to power on normally. All menu functions/internet browsing/downloads work at this point. However, when loading games, the ps4 display immediately turns off. The PS4 is still powered on with a white light, just no display. I am thinking this is also a PSU issue, as the increased power demand to the graphics card crashes it. Thoughts?

    Hello Andrew Paul, I am from Argentina and I have a problem with a PS4 ADP-240AR source where I turn on the console, it is raising the system for a few seconds, it automatically turns off by clicking on the source. With my multimeter check the arrival of 220v, 5v. The capacitors, the smallest gives 300v and the largest 307v, the fuse has continuity, the resistors too. However I do not have 12v, will it be because of the DNP012A chip?
    Thank you for your videos and training us, I await your response and can help you in whatever you need.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  8 лет назад

      +rajeshree sungalee Hi there, is the socket missing from the motherboard side (with the pins) or the power supply side (with the sockets)? To be honest the likelihood is that some serious damage has occurred to the board because these things usually take a decent amount of pressure before they give way. I'd be tempted to take / send it to a professional for repair if you're not used to this kind of work because if the power rail has been pulled into ground then bad things will happen. Do you have any pictures of the damage anywhere? Cheers, Andy.

  • @freakpunker

    My ps4 has the same sympton, but it's not a transformer. Can it be the DNP015 IC? There was a roach right there! I've removed and tested the zener diodes and they're ok... I'm pretty sure is the PSU.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  8 лет назад

      +freakpunker it's possible - the DNP015 is a watchdog IC for the entire supply so if this is stuffed then you may end up with issues.

    Just curious, since transformer lives upside down and just hangs off of pins which are friction fit only, why didn't you apply epoxy to pins to hold them in place, or put any adhesive or tape under transformer to hold it to pcb, and thus keep this problem from re-occuring?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  8 лет назад

      +john browne Hi there, it isn't - it is linked to those pins via two leads soldered onto them. It was these leads giving way which enabled the transformer to become dislodged when it was impacted. It is a tight fit otherwise so isn't really required. Cheers.

    • @johnbrowne3964
      @johnbrowne3964 8 лет назад

      +Andrew Paul The only thing holding the transformer to the pcb is the pins, which are press/friction fit only. An impact caused the pins to slide out of transformer, which pulled solderer wires loose. A dab of adhesive or double sided tape under the transformer would take some weight off the pins, and maintain a "factory" look if that is important.

      +jesse hill hi Jesse, that's normal behaviour for a BLOD - if you can power cycle the machine without unplugging and plugging it back in then you've most probably got an APU fault.

    Hi Andrew,
    Your video is excellent! Thank you very much for this. My PS4 is behaving like the one on right but it's completely my from a series of wired behaviour. First it didn't reboot after updates, but I could turn it on and off manually. Then it didn't turn on at all but if unplug the main and wait 30 seconds it did and now it's behaving like the one on the right. I tried to give it a little shake and few bumps it worked for a bit and then nothing. This let me think something mechanical was faulty I.e some wire that when off or something. I hope Ned the psu but from a visual inspection all seems fine. What are your thought? How can I properly test the PSU. I have some electronics experience so I know my way around multimeters and soldering iron. Can it be the DNP015 ic in this case too?
    Many thanks

    After I changed thermal pads and paste, my ps4 won't turn on. Also I sprayed power supply and big bunny dust came out. First I press power button beep no lights and nothing, then I press power button beep and blue light for sec. Fan won't start up so I guess it might be power supply!

    Hi great video, I'm going to subscribe. My Ps4 clicks twice as well with 2 of the LEDs lit of the board. I took out the power supply and the heat shield is discolored as if the power supply got very hot at some point. It also smells like it had been hot. So I'll by a new one, hope I don't waist my cash!

    I'm from Serbia and I really need some advice from you.
    What can this be: I need to press couple of times power button to turn my ps4 on. When it's turned on, the blue light blinks (BLOD), no image on tv.
    What can this be? Is this the PSU or something else?
    Thank you!

The psu also gets very hot whilst im using it, so ive opened it up to have a look to see whats going on but i have no clue lol! Im going to get a new one online, just wondered if you had any advice? Generic system problem - these are horrible to work out. Without schematics these are like p1$$ing in the wind and I've stopped doing much with them these days.

    Great vid, I have a similar problem.
    BLoD - PS4 turns on but no input to TV, light pulses constantly and fan/disk drive both work. Won't boot into safe mode it just goes off after I've held the power button for about 10 seconds. I've tried all the easy things like re seating the HDD and leaving it off and unplugged for a few days. Any ideas?
    Is it worth me trying to take the PSU apart and having a look around like in this vid or would you say it's likely to be something different? Thanks.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      It's very likely to be different - it's a general error condition and can be caused by literally anything. Sometimes it's APU related but anything else and it's really not worth chasing for what they're worth these days.

      Andrew Paul - just an update. I replaced the PSU no luck. Went on to take it all apart and I can't see anything wrong with the motherboard in terms of scorching etc. Checked the CR2032 battery and that's fine as well. Had the PS4 about 2 weeks (second hand) so I am pretty annoyed that it's now useless.
      Question though: if I buy a brand new one now will I be able to reuse the hard drive in the new PS4 if the models are the same? My worry would be is if the hard drive is causing the problem could it brick the new PS4?
      Thanks very much.
