That MOPAR is super rare, there were 963 R/T convertibles were produced in 1970. However, only 9 Hemi Challenger convertibles were made that year. I'm glad he is running a 440, much easier to find parts for than a Year correct HEMI for that car. Sweet and super rare ride!
The Hemi convertibles are pretty much too expensive to drive. Unless you’re hardcore and not afraid to drive them (like Jay Leno) they’re just expensive art pieces.
When your driving this you dont need to know what time it is. I love it. Your dad needs a mic i had to hold my ohone to my ear but knew i had to hear what he said
Hey Dylan I really loved this episode, mainly because you put a smile on your dad's face. I felt all warm and fuzzy, and I was smiling as I watched your dad put his foot 🦶 in it.
In.79 I had a Indian red with black too RT it had a 400 some one had built really good and strong it also has 4.10 gears in it that car was wicked fast and would lift the front wheels and carry them about 50 feet. Some much fun for a 17 year old wow. It's a wonder I survived.
Growing up my neighbor had a 1970 Challenger R/T plum crazy, white interior 440 six pack convertible with a luggage rack on the trunk with side pipes..the car still exists they never drove it , bought at Mr Norms in Chicago
Wow! What a car! You’d be spoiled when comparing with other muscle cars in the neighborhood. There was a ‘69 Camaro & a ‘67-‘68 Mustang fastback in my neighborhood. Both were owned and modified by young guys in late teens/early 20s in the late 70s early 80s and were tastefully done - Cragar mags, slightly jacked up with ladder bars, but with factory paint colors and hoods. No big hood scoops or side pipes or wild paint like you’d find on street freaks of the era. Maybe a few small decals on the back quarter windows. I coveted both of them! 😂. Around town, the car that grabbed my attention was a ‘70 Superbird. I can’t remember the color but I think it was B5 or Petty Blue.
I didn’t know you had a second channel… my bad. SUBSCRIBED! An awesome car and you made it better. Great job Dillon! The color combination makes me think that this car was ordered and is kinda rare? Would be cool to see it with the white stripes. So awesome that you can do this for your Dad! Thank you and God bless.
I had a 71 RT hardtop metallic green with black stripes and interior also 383, but the 71 383 had been swapped for a 68 383, it had ps,pb,ac power windows deluxe interior, rallye cluster, had the big RT decal on the hood, had 3.23 open rear
FYI,your 900+ idle RPM is too high to set initial timing because the mech adv in the dist is likely partially activated at hi 900rpm adding timing to the base/initial timing. You need to chk base/initial timing at 550-600tpm max to ensure the mech adv isn’t partially activated adding timing to the base setting which in turn retards the base timing by the amount of deg timing the mech adv is adding at idle. When you chk base timing at a lower 550/600 rpm idle speed it should be a few degrees less ten when you set base timing at higher 900rpm idle speed. With the aftermarket cam I hear in the motor in your car a good timing curve to start out with is approx 16-18 deg base timing set at 550-600 max idle rpm giving you a total 34-36 total timing (with 18 deg from mech adv in dist) all in by 2500 rpm with 16-18 deg base timing. You will have to change springs in mech adv to lighter ones to get mech adv timing all in by 2500tpm max along with limiting overall timing the mech adv gives. That’s because you want all the total timing in by the rpm the motor cruises at with the 3:23 gear & auto trans in the car cruise rpm should be at that rpm by 55mph + - a few mph which is good. Then with the mild motor setup it has with non stock cam you will in fact benefit a lot by using properly setup vac adv (limited to 8-10 deg max on non ported full engine vac) on non ported full vac all time. Full non ported vacuum on vac adv ads timing at idle that helps the motor idle better due to the additional8-10 timing it adds(when properly setup/limited) helping it idle better with the longer then stock duration that cam has,it will also make the throttle resp more snappy off idle & inc mpg & power a bit too. Now to properly setup the vac you have to limit it to a max of 8-10 deg (oem it adds 15-20+ deg) when it’s fully activated at idle on full int vac & not ported. Now you have to get the spec of the int vac required to fully active the vac adv at your motors current idle vac in gear with the timing I rec above for best idle vac. Now you will have to buy something like a Crane cams vac adv limiter plate for a mopar or you can make your own limiter plate or get a new msd or other aftermarket mopar dist that already has more easily adjustable mech adv & adjustable vac adv built into it you can adjust yourself in 5 mins vs oem dist. As for detonation/pinging your hearing) even though it may be a lower comp 9:1-9:5 motor the combustion chambers could be carboned up enough over the yrs to raise comp a bit more now you a bit more increasing the comp closer to 9:8-10:0comp along with the excess carbon buildup that glows red hot causing the detonation, not not valve rattle like you said) If I didn’t already address this above setup/limit the mech adv in dist to give a max of 18 deg all in by 2500 rpm to better work with the 3:23 gear your running & your good to go as long as your running enough Octane which can be an issue for some of us with today’s oxygenated unleaded 91-93 lower octane gas with 10% ethanol added these motors were never intended to run on in 69,70,72 etc. Niw with the 16-18 deg base timing + 18 deg mech in by 2500tpm max slong with 8-18 max ftom car adv on full int vsc all the time ( not pitted with vac at idle making motor run hotter at idle with less throttle response, less power & snap off idle & reducing mpg too!) the timing added up at cruise is approx 42-46deg which fine. Stock items were often at 50-52deg+ with all timing in at part throttle cruise. Btw, the Redon most cars mfg’s went pitted vac at idle in late 60’s thru 70’d into 80’s was it increased engine temp & exhaust temp lowering emissions a bit,it’s did nothing to help the perf or driveability if the car & motor one bit. If the motor pings/detonates on the above mentioned timing curve its not good to back off/regard base timing 3-4+ deg stop the detonation because it results in hotter running motor esp at idle ,reduced mpg, less snappy throttle resp ,lost power & idle is not as smooth either. What I do in that case is order the real lead octane booster from WILD BILL’S CORVETTES online,it’s pricey but works out to be much cheaper then buying 98-100 octane race fuel. If your motors pinging on the above setup add approx 2.25-2.5oz per lead additive per gal of to 91-93 pump gas & that should stop the ping with gas now in the approx 97-98 octane range. The above suggestions are coming my 55yrs of 1s hand Exp wrenching restoring American classic/muscle cars inc rebuilding motors including dialing them in yo get best street driveability & best overall power/perf. It’s always best to not regard the timing to stop pinging because it really reduce the overall driveability & gun f’d tut driving these v8 classics. It only costs me $350-400 yrly yo buy the real lead octane booster additive from Wild bills corvettes online to keep my bbc running nice and snappy. I have owned s #’d matching 69 chevelle ss396(now bored to 402cid)Brit forged pistons) 4spd iv’e owned since 1978/now 47yrs! It’s an L35 386/325HP motor from the factory that I rblt in 2001 with more cam, mild head porting,Manley undercut race flow valves, comp cams roller tip rokers & matching pushrods,a fairly mild comp ft perf cam & Hyd lifters, extrude honed ex manifolds out back thru 2,5” mandfell bent ex pipes with stock type 2.5” tailpipes & chrome ex tips with stockk size appearing flow master mufflers letting it breathe well. I skdo properly tweaked the stock original q/jet & ign system to compliment the fitted perf upgrades I did to the motor when I rblt it. Fid same approx dist setup I rev you fo add king with so s I installing s dyivk looking height output pertronix coil & stock appearing spiral core wires, installed dist cap & rotor with cooper/brass terminals t try op DK of which reduce resistance lvl exiting the ign system flooring much more spark energy going to the non resistor plugs I run. Lastly on the ign I also run hi perf std motor products DR2371XP points with hvy dty stiffer posting yo eliminate point bounce at the higher rpm capability of ny Rblt motor with non stock comp ft perf cam. In stock form the cam/motor was done making power at approx 4,700-4,800rpm,now with it’s mild Hyd ft perf cam it pulls/makes power thru approx 5,500-5,600rpm with est of now 375ish/440-450ish lbs trq post doing all the perf mods to the motor when I rblt it. With its 3:31 geared 12bolt rear & m20 Muncie 4spd it gets out of of its own way very nicely while retaining good driveability & decent idle & idle vacuum for the pwr brakes it has too. Gets a whopping 14.5mpg in mixed driving & 15.5-16mpg cruising 55-60mph it fo on open road wit little to no traffic stops. Happy motoring! Scott from NY & FL,a snowbird of sorts for now st 69yrs old.
Glad to see you doing things for the old man and mid 40s myself having kids age 14 to 25 do what u can to help ive learned as got older now looking back wish i could of done more and iam sure the tume u put in the car will come back to you someday but keep up the great work and everyone have wonderful day.
Dillion. Id be interested in that loose converter if your dad wants to part with it. I have a blown 68 coronet. I had a huges 24-30 in it. It pushes through the brakes at 2200. I was hoping for a little better launch rpm.
They say that 5% of the 1970 RTs were convertible. If it were factory black that even makes it even more rare. That car would be worth the cost of even a partial restoration
Not sure if this is true of all mopar distributors, but mine has an adjustment for the max vacuum advance if you stick an allen key inside the port for the vacuum line. Might be worth trying that to reduce the amount of vac advance off idle.
Very nice challenger. 20 degrees is still a little too much for a stock 383, IMO. If you keep it at 20 degrees disconnect the vacuum advance to prevent the valve chatter. I set my 440 at 18 degrees with no vacuum advance in my charger, runs great, very responsive. Something to ponder.
Every engine responds differently. My 440 in my Charger likes 15 initial, but my 360 in my Dart likes 23. Cam, compression ratio, fuel, etc all play factors in this. There is no one size fits all.
@@NowThatsMcCool That why I was thinking stock 383 would be less timing, your 440 is probably stock with 15 degrees. My 440 has a pretty aggressive cam 525 Hp, 18 degrees. if I put more I get chatter. Like you said every engine is different.
You should look into getting a 2 car wildfire lift. So u can put 4 cars/trucks in 2 spots indoors. Derek from Vice grip garage was the first i saw with the 2 car lift. I think would be sweet to keep more finished cars under roof
Call up Tony's or Brewers n get ya an 833. You'll never look back. All mopars came down the line as manual shift cars so the holes for the z bar etc r all there . Simple change out.😉👍🤙
Now I know why your dad wanted me to sell you my convertible! He wanted it for you to have one like his. Unfortunately the Shadow is just a 4 cylinder; however, that little 2.5 liter will flat out get up and move!😂😂😂
Heck yeah brother I loved those car brother I liked the hard tops more my old men had a 66 cornet 4 door needs lots of work I need front and back frame rails for driver and passenger side I’ll liked to build it up from ground up
Hey Dylan, Richard here. We have a 99 Chevy van with 15x8 wide rims. What size tires will fit on those rims. I would like to have the same size tires on all the rims. Please let me know asap. Thanks brother
I didnt see the previous video on this car and the 440 swap, did Dylan paint the 440 orange or did it come that way? I thought the performance 440s or big blocks were orange and the truck and non performance big blocks were blue?
your father had this sitting around, and you worked on everything else? including the fish lip? what's next you gotta a hemi cuda in a barn lol like yeash, I would be working on this all day and polishing it up right boy lol not to mention trying to find out what happened to the original 383, also I just had words with a guy from the old days, take that 383 and put a six pack on it and that baby will wheelie with how much torque it will put out
Always a mistake to put a high stall converter in a street car. I build for low end torque and I use the lowest stall possible. Street light to street light performance is best if you match everything to low RPM.
It needs the white stripe back, but hear me out: don't paint the car or do any body work. Leave the patina. But have someone paint the stripe to make it look like it has faded since the '70s.

Second channel content that is worthy of the main channel! I love it!
The smile on dad’s face was worth it!
Your Dad is a real car guy just like us! Great Video Dylan
Awesome video and awesome car! Your Dad’s is incredibly lucky to have a son like you who is willing to help him out with his projects.
Love that smile your Pops had when he got on it!
Great video. The ole man's a cool guy
Great segment, the smile on your father's face is worth millions. Great son!
Big block Mopar has its own sound....Soooo killer.
Original flowmasters as well... sweet

Back in about 1976 I had a 1970 340 'Cuda convertible. a lot of the same lines . that is a good looking car Thanks for sharing
This is the first time I ever Saw your dad up close and Dylan you sure resemble your Dad.
Your dad seems like a cool cat. Good job on getting it tuned right.
Great to see this car again after 6 years in the cold start video.

Good stuff. I have a 70 Challenger sitting outside with the legendary 000 motor. Hopefully I get to it before I’m your dad’s age.
I'll be going from a stock to a slightly higher stall converter in the next little while. Can't wait to feel what it's like!
I can't wait to see new videos on the black Dodge truck
Nice vid. Call the RUclips research dogs. Dennis Collins or Jerry Heasley surely they will find out everything ya need to know about that rare beauty.
That moterhome 440 engine swap i believe is before roadkill
Yes we this did it before Roadkill.
Sweet
Your dad seems like a cool person man.
Wrench and learn with the mccools like the video keep them old cars alive.
Call up Tony's or Brewers n get ya an 833. You'll never look back.
All mopars came down the line as manual shift cars so the holes for the z bar etc r all there .
Simple change out.😉👍🤙
Great content.... 💪✌️
Heck yeah.get dad getting after it.
Maybe get the hvac working so your dad doesn't crash it cuz he can't see out the windshield. Just a thought...
I didn’t even know this was a problem. One thing at a time.
Sure is “McCool” to have a second channel video today!
The vibration is possiblity from the flywheel if it has a weight on it and it doesn't need weight then you have a vibration
It’s the driveshaft. I changed it and it went away.
692 1970 Challengers R/T Convertibles with 383HP Automatic less than 70 in Black.
The shift points a little late. You should be able to adjust it.

A power top was an option on E bodies.
The vibration could be from pinion angle being off.

Hi Dylan from west Alabama
Don't check the oil when the engine is running and wait at least a few minutes after you shut it off. And don't use STP. Just use a good quality oil.

Wonder why the word ow when get hurt is so common, where it came from etc..
My suggestion, get it running and shifting good then enjoy driving it for a while the way it is. While driving think about what you want.

Always a mistake to put a high stall converter in a street car. I build for low end torque and I use the lowest stall possible. Street light to street light performance is best if you match everything to low RPM.
You have to take this car to Mark Warman at graveyard cars

Ah ok thanks 👍
It needs the white stripe back, but hear me out: don't paint the car or do any body work. Leave the patina. But have someone paint the stripe to make it look like it has faded since the '70s.
