Is it a RACE or an EXPERIENCE? | Iceman Cometh Challenge 2023

- I went into Iceman 2023 with full intentions on it being my last, I really did. As fate would have it, this year was one of the best... so now I guess I gotta keep going. Now it certainly wasn't my best year in terms of placement or time but it begs the question... Is it really about the race itself or the experience?
The whole weekend from start to finish was dialed in. Thanks to the whole team for doing their part, everyone killed it.

Jeremey Rodriguez AKA MTN GOAT
Ryan Stephen AKA @FreestyleSupermoto
I think every mountain biker should experience this event at least once.

The clear cut section you mentioned near the start of your race is exactly that. Clear cut. We’ve ridden it every year. It has been wooded up until this summer. Totally wild experience. Also - my first Iceman was in 2010 as well….😃
Thanks! I thought so, it was wild! Totally different looking but also cool. Thanks for watching 🙌
Jinxed us with the “fat bike season” comment!
Damnit! You’re right 🤦♂️
Great footage! Sweet jacket too.
Thanks! I love Twin Six gear, been wearing it for years 👍
I have to say that the single track was perfectly packed and well carved, but when you've got over 4k riders, more single track is far from ideal. You are always faster than someone, and someone is always faster than you; it makes for frustration on both ends. I got behind a group of teens having the time of their lives racing together, but they weren't too adept at single track. I didn't say a word to them, but there was a douche behind me that kept yelling insults that they were slow and that this was supposed to be a race, etc., saying he came from a wave way back on a borrowed bike, and that he was putting us all to shame. I told the guy he was rude and that if he was so fast, he could ride with the pros next time ;) Great vid, man. Thanks for shooting and sharing it. This event is both a race and an experience like no other.
Thanks for watching! I totally agree, the extra singletrack definitely has its pros and cons. That guy behind you being a jerk would have driven me crazy. Nice job keeping your cool 😎
I love this race!! This was my 9th year and finally made it up Anita’s hill. I also got my PR which I didn’t think was got to happen with all the new single track. 2:37 not bad for me.
Congrats! Definitely not an easy year to PR 💪 Thanks for watching 🙌
Good work man. You know you'll be back.
Thanks brother! Yeah… you’re right lol
Great job on the edit, you summed up Iceman well! The sandy 2-track through the clear cut at 4:14 has been in the race as long as I can remember, area was clearcut late summer/early fall. The big hill w/ the fans/drums/whiskey handups is Make It Stick!
Thank you! I was hoping someone would drop some knowledge in the comments 🙌. Now I know 🤘🤘 thanks for watching 👍
Excellent video; you have a new subscriber. I especially like that you have a fast enough card in your GoPro so the on-bike footage looks good and isn't all pixelated. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thanks again!
Thanks and welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy some of my other content as well 👍👍
Awesome footage! 🙌🏼 Congrats on another successful race!! 👏🏼
Thank you! Hopefully more to come 👍
Congrats on the race and the video. Quality stuff.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it 🤘🤘
now that was awesome comentary throough and through good job !! enjoyed that
Haha thank you! This is my first video with raw race footage, no music, and my voice over so I really appreciate the feedback 🙌. Thanks for watching 👍
Nice work out there, and an awesome summary video as always! The conditions were so good this year. Looks like I crossed the line about 10 seconds after you haha
Oh nice! Great job to you too! I appreciate that. It really was an amazing day, that’s why I kinda tried to enjoy it a little bit more. There are so many years that I want it to be over before it starts lol
I also was wave 8. Good times were had. I decided to go hard at the beginning and what I experienced vs your video was totally different. For sure worth going hard early to get into the single track without slowing down......until you start catching the wave before you.
Still have been curious of a video of our wave leaving the airport from a spectators perspective. Curious if you or someone else might have that.
I always want to go hard right from the start to get a good position into the first single track but then I realize how bad I am at starting fast. I always take so long to warm up which is a problem lol maybe next year 🤷♂️
The only spectator view I have from the airport is at the end of the video
Great recap! I thoroughly enjoyed the B-Roll footage. This marked my inaugural IceMan, navigating the course on my fat bike and starting in Wave 43. The single track turned out to be mostly a recovery stretch for me due to congestion. I pushed hard on the two tracks and hills, finding the hard left turn into Woodchip Hill after a tight single track particularly challenging. Fortunately, pre-riding the day before proved beneficial in preparing for it. Many were walking that section when I encountered it. Overall, it was a satisfying race experience. Here's to hoping our paths cross next year!
Congrats and welcome to the club! That woodchip hill is a burner! I agree, The pre ride is super beneficial, especially for the last 10k. Glad you had fun, and I bet you’ll enjoy starting in an earlier wave even more next year.
I live in MI and have friends that I raced with over the years that talk about the Iceman all year long. At that time year in MI the weather can swing so much! When I was racing MTB and when the weather made me start wearing knee warmers my season ended.... I know I know I ride fat bikes now.
Was the fat bike class a big class?
It’s Awesome! Yes the swings the weather can take is insane. I’ve raced in a few inches of snow and 60 degrees lol. The fat bike class seems to keep getting bigger, which makes sense because depending on weather that might be the best tool for the job 👍
Nice work! 🤘 Gunna be racing Hugh Jass this year?
Thank you! Yes, I definitely plan on doing 1 or 2. They look like a lot of fun 👍
Hey dad, can you do a bike check video on the DIY?
I posted a review video on the DIY bike last year 👍
Make it stick :)
Haha absolutely 👍 🤘
That's the name of the climb with the drummer ;)
@Sagacity833 yes sir!
The lady in the dog costume I think was pro bike rider Matt Ackers wife.
That’s awesome! Lol 🐶
Yup that was Jenny. She’s dressed up like Alexis dog, sir William
@leemarine6255 haha that’s awesome 👏
the hill with the drums is called make it stick. great video.
Thank you! And thanks for watching 🤘🤘
