- USB3.0 to VGA Adapter Review
I often want to hook up a third display to my Surface Pro 3, but alas, there is only one MiniDisplayPort on the device. StarTech recently sent me this little device to try out, and I'm happy to say it works quite nicely. It lets me hook up a VGA monitor through my USB3 port, so now I can sport two external displays on my Surface Pro 3! Check out the video and see for yourself if this is something you should have for your Surface Pro!

3:59 i thought your surface pro screen was cracked.
This is awesome my 14' laptop only came with one HDMI cable. honestly in terms on monitor sizes bigger is better lol
It comes at a lost in cpu performance.depends on what ur using the second or third monitor for
My Lenovo Laptops video chip has burnt out so even plugging into the vga port on the side does not work, will this USB 3.0 to VGA Adapter bypass the burnt out video chip on the motherboard ?
Does this device work with Fresco Logic 2000 chip ?
Indeed, it is required for me to obtain non-standard resolutions under Linux.
Thanks for the video! This video is just what I was looking for.
es it works on usb 1.0 2.0 or it works only on usb 3.0
hi, i have a laptop and i buy a 144hz monitor but not work whit hdmi cable 1.4 or 2.0, i try hdmi to dvi but not work, i want to try USB to DVI adapter, do you think i get 144hz ??
HDMI Doesn't support 144hz, you should use Displayport or DVI-Dual Link.
Would this work for a 4th monitor if I already have 3 monitors connected via my gfx card ports?
Is it longlast?
hey i have only intel hd graphics if i byed that it will work for games
can this thing grab the vga out of the sega dreamcast or the one of a windows 98 vintage PC?
No, it's not designed for that. If you want to capture video from a older PC or Dreamcast, I would look at products from Elgato or Hauppague. Maybe something like this: amzn.to/2oAhXZ7, if you are capturing from older analog sources. I like this Elgato: amzn.to/2F4QhG0, it works well, but you will need a way to convert the older output to HDMI.
Work with MacBook pro?
Will this work with any PC? In Bios mode also?
Does this turn off W7 aero effects when in use?
does the adapter keep a good focus?
can I use this for my macbook air?
I know I'm replying 3 years old comment but so far I've seen this product from different manufacturers only support Windows; except the one made by brand called UGreen
Hello, can you tell me about the difference between this adapter and a simple adapter that costs USD 20 or less?
Thanks!
Fabrizio Bogado hard to say. Did you have any particular models you're looking at? I know some more generic brands can be cheaper. StarTech's pretty reputable and I've had good luck with their stuff.
Thanks for your answer.
Yes I was looking for this product www.ebay.com/itm/400754399482
And theres no such information to compare with others.
If you can help me to know the differences I will be grateful.
Thanks!
Fabrizio Bogado Honestly, it could be similar hardware inside the StarTech. The hardware to do USB to VGA seems generic these days. I suppose the only thing I can see from the description is no support for OSX. I can't vouch for the build quality though, but it might work just fine. If you look for USB to VGA on Amazon you'll find many others that are even cheaper than the one you found on ebay. At least with Amazon, you can see reviews on some of them.
Yes, I saw it and I think like you.
Thanks a lot for your answer!!
Good channel!!
Good luck!
Hi, great vid.
Just a question:
I'm looking for one to use in my home studio. I've got a 22" full HD monitor via HDMI and a 1680x 22" monitor to VGA (via a DVI adapter). If I would get the USB 3.0 > VGA adapter and plug it in, would I be able to use a third monitor (or even two if I get two of these adapters) ? I want to move my DJ Gear to the other wall because of the livevideo I do frequently and I don't want everyone to see the entire setup. Thanks for the answer in advance.
// I've got an Intel i7 4771 and 16GB ram, no hassle there. My gfx card only has a DVI and HDMI connector and a Mini-DP, but the mini-DP (even an active cable) doesn't work when the VGA>DVI monitor is plugged in. Therefore I'm looking for this kind of solution. GFX Card is the Gigabyte Radeon HD7950 Windforce-3 3GB //
I think you would be better off with a docking station like this: amzn.to/2vwiI9h. I had my company buy several of these, and they work great. You can hook up 2 additional monitors to your computer, and give you additional ports. If your computer has USB-C, this one: amzn.to/2KyrBnm, will give you 3 displays.
Is this 60hz
Hi, I have a question
Can this be use to an andoid phone? I plan on using my phone as a computer where i can connect keyboard and a mouse.
> no need if your Android supports MHL (you can check list of MHL-enabled phones easily because the'yre not many) -
< I haven't seen android driver for this kind of hardware, but my best guess is you need different kind of product specialized for android, for example JUA161c
< for your purpose I think you'd better use Samsung phone with its docking accessory to reduce headache but it's costs quite a lot
> your user name is @iPujs but you use android, it's interesting :p
will this work if i plugged it into my dell pc and ran it to my older dell monitor
+Vaughan Mills This depends if your older dell pc has a USB3 connector on it. I can't say for sure if this will work with a non-USB3 port.
Hey what would happen if you have a usb 2.0 port?
It works fine. I just used this on an older mid-tower computer at the office to drive a second monitor.
I didn't get how did you install the driver (that was on CD) on a Surface?
You will need the DisplayLink driver. You can download it directly here: www.startech.com/AV/USB-Video-Adapters/USB-3-to-VGA-Adapter~USB32VGAPRO, from Startech's support section for this product.
That’s pretty unique
can i use this to gaming? please answer:D
That will depend on the game. It's not designed for it, and It's not accelerated. It's best used to extend your display for work related activities, maybe some basic games.
Ok thanks
@@frederik7786 Well you can use this monitor to use the internet while gaming or something
I can use no display problem pc???
you'll need to set your expectations, it's fine for office type work, but will not be good for gaming. I put this on an old system for a user at my company, and they used it for quite a while, until they got an upgraded computer.
is it works before windows booting? for example, during POST or in BIOS?
+백중환 No, sadly these types of devices won't work until after the OS loads and the drivers are running. So you can't replace your normal monitor with this device. Regard these as secondary display devices.
Could I potentially use this to connect my desktop to a tv? I'm not planning on using it as a different monitor or anything like that. More or less I'm using it to create a bigger screen and have a tv so I can hook other device up to it.
+llama warrior That should be fine, so long as your TV has a VGA input, which is a little hard to find these days. Essentially, your TV is becoming a secondary monitor to your PC.
Ok thank you
would this work with music programs such as cubase while using dual monitors
please help anyone
I don't have any experience using Cubase, but if it's not a graphically demanding application (CAD, Games) it will probably be ok. An employee at my office ended up using this on her desktop to extend the display to a second screen. She mostly did Word, Excel, Email and Web browsing, which worked fine.
how can i know if a program is graphical demanding coz i wanna be sure before i purchase the same usb external vga card you use
or which vga adapter do you recomend sir to be more sure
Can I use this in revere, that is to connect my pc to the laptop ? thank you
No, that's not possible with this. If you want to use your laptop as a second screen. you're best bet is to use something like Sharemouse or Synergy to control the laptop from your desktop. It's not quite like a second monitor, since you can't move applications from your desktop to your laptop, but you can run apps on your laptop and control it from your desktop.
Thanks mate.
what about when you are running high FPS video or games, does it handle it ok?
+Michael King Hmm, that I never tried. How were you thinking about using it? On an older laptop, gaming laptop, or a desktop? Most gaming grade cards from the last few years already have multiple heads on the card.
Was actually thinking of using in my work place, the security camera desktops do not have a lot of outputs and they look at HD streaming video for multible sites, I am sure the USB 2 version of this we tried a while back and the video was a little choppy :)
i do the same thing but i get a lot of lag
The response time
can this work for all in one pc?
Sure, I don't see any reason why not. So long as the All-in-One is running Windows, has a USB port, you should be ok. I used this on an old Dell Optiplex office computer running Windows 7 to hook it up to an external monitor.
will usb 3.0 work with usb 2.0
Vincent Stewart yes I did that many times
does this place extra load on the cpu?
I have not seen it cause that.
is the display clear & good for coding?
I ended up setting this up on an older office PC for another employee. The user was an Excel and Word user and never complained about difficulty reading anything, so you'll probably be fine using it for coding.
great ! Thank You Dower.
hey can I connect the USB to phone thru a USB otg and also add an USB hub in between
Honestly, I've never tried that... My guess is it won't work because there may not be enough power available. You might be better off relying on something like miracasting your phone/tablet if you wanted a larger attach your device to a larger screen. I know on the Android side they make HDMI to MicroUSB adapters.
+Dower Chin but hub takes power from the phone right if you connect it thru otg
I think that depends on the phone... Are you thinking about an Android Phone?
I picked up one of these type of adapters on my last trip to Hong Kong (amzn.to/29Taaf9). It works pretty well with my Samsung tablet.
+Dower Chin I wanna try it wid Nexus 5
+milAn dhOdi it supplies power I've seen many videos that show how you can connect a wired gaming mouse and keyboard with ya phone .My idea is that at the same time I wanna connect it wid the monitor thru VGA converter slimport and
micro USB to USB which goes to the hub
u knw wat m sayin?
Can i use it if i have usb 2.0?
yes
yes but the res wont be good might aswell use ur vag slot it will prob be clearer
It will not work for games
they sell these at Walmart for 30$
im considering buying one of these but not from walmart
nevermind i might have to get it from walmart, too expensive
Crunchy Kyle nice mug shot
I got one on Amazon for $13.88
