In this video you will discover what could be a hidden weak link in your sea kayak forward stroke.
If you want to boost your speed with your Greenland paddle make sure to watch this video until the end.
Almost every client I ever worked with had it.
And there are just 2 easy steps to get rid of it.
If you don’t avoid this you will be slower than you can be. And you may not have the endurance to keep going the distance.
The weak link is bending the arms.
I know, I know.
Everybody knows not to use the arms for paddling.
This is a little more subtle. And most people miss it.
Here’s what paddling looks like when bending the arms.
And here’s what it looks like keeping the arms in a strong position.
Now I’m assuming that you already move your legs and pelvis to power the forward stroke. If you’re not sure you’re already doing this make sure to download my free Forward stroke checklist, you’ll find the link in the description.
So…
Once you’re generating the power from your lower body, there are only 2 steps to removing the weak link.
Step one: Let your paddle blade move away from the kayak.
The path of the paddle starts close to the kayak and exits further away.
If you try to keep the paddle close to the kayak as you rotate, you have to bend your arm.
Step two: Let your hand drop down. Let your fingers touch the water a little with every stroke.
This does 2 things.
Keeps your arms in a strong position
Puts your whole blade in the water
As you apply these 2 steps, you will notice that you also have a lot more stability when paddling in waves.
In this position there isn’t much you can do if you get knocked over by a wave.
On the other hand, in this position? This is the most secure place to be.
It’s almost impossible to capsize.
I know this sounds really simple, but here’s the thing.
A lot of paddlers don’t know when they’re bending their arms.
Here’s how you can find out. Just look at one of your arms as you do a few strokes. And then look at the other.
And repeat this every now and then to make sure you’re not sliding back into the habit of bending your arms.
If you want to add a lot of power to your forward stroke and be able to keep going without fatigue, I think you’ll appreciate the free checklist I made for you. Just follow the step by step instructions and you’ll soon notice that paddling just got a whole lot easier.
And more enjoyable.

Thanks for watching
As always, you demonstrate such a deep knowledge and connection with the sea, it seems to go beyond kayaking. Thank you.
Wonderful advice! Getting your hands to the water with a Greenland is very true - puts more of the blade to work and keeps the warm straighter. Your suggestions and techniques have helped me immensely and made me start to love my Greenland paddle even more than my Aleutian one.
Good to see you again! Thanks for all your lessons in Greenland Paddling! Greeting from The Netherlands
Thank you for another great video. I've been learning to use a Greenland paddle for some time now. However, with a twist - I paddle inflatable kayaks. 😅
It turns out you can have great and relaxed paddling experience with a Greenland paddle and a well chosen inflatable kayak. 😁
I absolutely love your style. Took out my Greenland for the first time yesterday, it was so wonderful. Your videos definitely set me up for success 😸
Thank you so much.
Good advice! The other thing is to RELAX and feel each foot pushing against the pedal - this automatically makes your upper body relax and helps focus on the lower body to power your stroke. It makes using a greenland blade so natural and pleasurable!
I found your channel last night and then binged a bunch of your uploads. I love how direct and to the point you are. The biggest takeaway I get from every one of your messages is that to thrive on the water, let the kayak become an extension of your body. The way you stay at a 45 degree angle and flutter along as if it's nothing- that's Wayne Gretzky energy! Bruce Lee essence.
“Read your watch.” Best advice I’ve ever gotten.
Thanks for the tips
Thx for the check list and lesson
You are very welcome, hope you find it helpful.
Thank you! Your the man!
your techniques have been paramount for my ability to start paddling my surf ski thanks for your great videos
Do you use the Greenland paddle with your surf ski? Or do you find that the techniques transfer to the wing paddle?
Very instructive video. Could you help me find your the checklist you mentioned in the video?

Always enjoy your videos. I've always felt that canting the paddle blade produces more speed too. What are your thoughts?
I'm not sure but to me it seems awkward to try to not cant the blade as it naturally finds the angle. I do find that it's a lot more stable in waves with the canted blade.
What technique for determining Greenland paddle length would you recommend? Cheers
I start with determining look length. If you drop your arms naturally and bend your elbows 90 degrees in front of you, that gives you an idea how far apart you hands can be. If your kayak is fairly wide, like more than 23" you might want more width. The length of the blade is a matter of preference. It's like the gears on a bike, a shorter blade will give you more torque with a faster cadence, while the longer blade will have a slower cadence with more resistance.
