Do you ever struggle to turn your sea kayak?
Do you wish you could make a quick turn without losing all your precious momentum?
Do you ever get sore shoulders from and feel like you are fighting with the wind to turn?
Turning a sea kayak doesn’t have to be that hard… If you learn a few simple techniques.
You can use the shape of the hull of your kayak to help you turn effortlessly.
You can learn to use your paddle in such a way that you have an instant brace, for edging and leaning your kayak to make the turns tighter and effortless. You can let the kayak do the work, and just be the driver.
If you are ever sea kayaking on a windy day, you need to understanding how the wind affects your kayak, and how it can either help you turn your kayak, or make it more difficult for you to turn your kayak. If you don’t take the time to learn how the wind affects your kayak, you will have a tendency to struggle with turning your kayak, and you will work way harder than you have to. You won’t have a nice effortless turn.
This video is the first of a series that will help you learn the important techniques to turn your sea kayak effortlessly. You will first learn to move the stern or slip it to the side, and use that as the base for all your turning strokes. And then we can add to it and really transform your turns and make you look like an advanced kayaker. You will learn how to add bracing to your edging so that you can make all your kayak turning stroke much more effective. You will learn how to do bow strokes, like a bow draw, or crossbow draw with your sea kayak, to turn quickly and without losing speed. You will learn how to avoid getting pushed around by the wind, and learn instead to use the wind to help you turn your sea kayak around with ease.
You will also learn many other sea kayak maneuvering techniques to make you more in control. You will learn to maneuver your kayak sideways, backwards, forward, so that you can go where you want in the easiest possible way. You will learn to turn your kayak and conserve your energy.

How to turn a sea kayak
I’ve been learning from Paulo’s videos for 3 years now. One year ago I broke down and bought a P&H Volan at 42lbs. It and the Gearlab Greenland Paddle have truly brought kayaking into a completely higher level of response. Having the kayak an extension of your body is the key. Thank you Paulo for all you have and still are teaching me !
I love the emphasis on having your stern slip. Fantastic!
I love your philosophy of wearing the kayak and belonging in nature. It makes me excited to try your techniques.
This video is great, I have a 16' kayak but I am new to it. The first thing I noticed was that tipping makes the boat turn. paddling is too much work. I love the pot stirring moves you showed in the video. As a sailor I can relate to the vow seeking up when you tip. Cheers great content (also subscribed).
This video is fantastic, I just found it and was wondering which of the videos would be considered part 2? Thanks!
Having just started kayaking, watching you is the motivation and encouragement I need! Thanks.
Thanks Paulo, clear and concise. No bull, explanations of how to turn. I'm a beginner and learnt a lot from this, especially letting the stern slide. I had no idea that happened. Cheers!
I’m really loving your great videos, Paulo, thank you! Very inspiring and informative. I’m glad to have found your content after just getting my first kayak, and starting off on the journey with such great advice!
Thank you for such a clear presentation. Will practise my forward steering strokes this afternoon!
Great information, important skills to make the ride easier and more fun and interesting. I'm looking forward to the next videos in the series.
Very informative, thank you, will be watching your other videos.
This technique is GENIUS!! I can see that by using this I will be able to improve. Especially now that I have picked up a sea kayak. It will be fun to practice, and experience the improved technique in action. Thank you so much, Paulo!!
Brilliant vid!!!.I am going to Anglesey this weekend..and will apply your teqniques..As I had been struggling with the very thing your' teaching here! Thank you!
Thanks for explaining this technique and your clear english. So its easier for me in germany to understand you :-)
Wonderful explanation and video production. Thank you!
Such great information for the newbies. Thank you.
Great very clear explanation of how to turn
Connecting it to driving helped me visualize it.
Just found your videos. I love your presentation and philosophy regarding working with your environment. I've ordered a Greenland paddle and I'm going to put your methods into practice.
Wow, beautiful. Technique. Like poetry
Paulo, I've learned a lot just watching your videos.... so much more to learn but some of these concepts I understand but im lacking the proper equipment. Soon ill be able to go the next steps and practice more.
I really enjoy his video's very well explained I look forward to seeing more as I have just subscribed
Nice. You have good way of explaining things:)
I enjoyed the video. It is always good to learn new techniques to improve your skills.
merci beaucoup ! i subscribed to your channel few videos ago and i adhere to the style you teach. greatly appreciated ! ! very important and pertinent skills you share.
Always helpful!
very relaxing video.
exellent tutorial !!! thanks !!!
Thank you sweet Paulo.
That was very helpful.
Gold, absolute gold!
😉 👍
Thanks
haha, just went to your "about me" page and you describe your technique as "gold". Not surprising that that is the one word that came to me while watching this video. Thanks again.
Great Greenland techniques!
I notice that you will sometimes use the left paddle blade for a bow draw on the left and sometime use the right blade for a bow draw on the left. How do you decide which to use?
Excellent.... Thank you...
Thanks so much!!
Nice video.
Transitioning from w w to flat. Just got a Chinook, Aquaterra and love it. But this will highly accelerate Things for me. Thank you so much.
WWG1WGA. Smiles
Awesome
Hy Paulo. I have tried to comfirm subscribing to Kayak skills new in my mail box to get access to the videos you recommended in this video. No result. What to do? Thanks for the best instruction videos I ever have seen!
Thanks. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Loving your videos very informative 👍🏻thank you 💗
Where did you get your paddle?
Just found this channel, great info! Is that a fish coming up on your left side at 1:41 or am I seeing things? haha
Thank you! I have an 18-foot sea kayak and I don't like to feel like I"m turning the Queen Mary.
Hey Paulo, are your teachings also apply to water with current such as a river?
They typically say to lean into the current or there will be a twist motion caused by current vs eddie water speed difference and will cause a kayak flipping.
Thanks for posting. I will study this. And I think it's not blaming a beginner only a stupid beginner. Means someone who is not listen and observing to a teacher. My big question is, how to do this to a air kayak like a grabner Riverstar. Edging is difficult.
Great video. Great teacher. This is my second of your videos. I subscribed with the first one I watched it was that good and I am looking forward to viewing and learning from all your other videos. I have been paddling just over a year now and anything I can do to improve my experience is fantastic. QUESTION: you mentioned using these techniques with an expedition kayak. I have a 14 foot touring kayak. Will practicing these techniques work the same in a different shaped boat? I look forward to receiving your reply. 😊🙂😊
Ya it will work really well with your shorter kayak. You'll be able to turn it on a dime in no time. Thanks,
Comfort Paddling Thank you. I have another question for you, can I use my kayak in white water rapids, like levels 1,2 and maybe 3? I look forward to reading your reply.
@@CuriousinNY I hope that being late to the party doesn't mean that you've learned the hard way that a 14' rec or touring boat isn't a great choice for whitewater. Class 1 is easy enough that almost any boat will work but as the rapids get more difficult a more suitable boat becomes more important, unless you're only goal is to get down the river quickly. Wildwater boats are almost 15' long, and are a great boat for paddling really fast, but it takes a lot of skill to use them in difficult rapids. Used whitewater boats are inexpensive, so anyone who wants to paddle beyond class 1 would do well to get a boat that's designed for the type of paddling they want to do.
@@NYpaddler No you are not to late. Thanks for the info.
It feels almost impossible to turn a long kayak, but I’ll give this technique a try, thanks :)
So, I just received my new Valley Etain 17.7, im struggling with my Primary stability, When the chop is at my side i get very tippy. Any advice?
I have a new Greenland paddle on order and looking to try this Bow turn. I seen you videos and i Love the way you demonstrate comfort in yore kayak.
The Etain is a nice kayak. You will get used to the low primary stability and will learn to appreciate how easy it is to put on edge. Learning to get stability with your Greenland paddle as you paddle will help you stay comfortable when paddling with waves coming from the side. Just make sure you learn to use the Greenland paddle properly, and not use it the same way you would a Euro paddle, or you will miss out on all the benefits.
Comfort Paddling thnaks very much, I just subscribed to your channel I’ll be tuning in to follow your instructions. I just completed my first course - Sea Kayak Level 1 , but I still fight being tippy, I think it dealing with axious mind. I’m active in and on the water, but oddly not taking total control of my kayak is something I’m not dealing well with.
What shape is this paddle?
Is that Cow Bay on Flores Island at the five minute mark?
Yes it is.
took a while to get there
Help please. How do you sit with your knees and thigh? We learnd to jam the knees under the kneepads and press the foot rest. Get so worn out and cramping in toes. Norway.
It starts with having a good fit with your kayak so that you don't need to lock your knees to stay in place and have control. Here's a free tutorial to show you how: www.dancingwiththesea.com/product/outfitting-your-kayak-for-performance/
Hi could you please give me an approximation for the distance it takes for you to complete a full 360 degree turn at normal kayaking speed. i.e the turning circle or radius of turn. CHeers!
It depends a lot on the kayak and how well it turns. If you want to turn quickly look for a kayak with a lot of rocker that is designed to be maneuverable. Keep it mind that it will be slower and less efficient for going straight.
@@DancingWithTheSea Ok thanks for that. Obviously its very variable but I am doing research for a project on this so was wondering is there any approximation on distance you could give me for say a standard 16 ft sea kayak that is travelling in calm water at an average speed to turn 360 degrees? Cheers!
Everyone's novice to begin with. Slow and steady does it.
Content starts at 3:54 where he explains how to loosen up the rear of the kayak for a good turn. Leading up to 3:54 is mostly fruitless pep talk and a weak analogy.
Please don't be an elitist.
Timothy Ranken Were you beaten as a child? That's why you grew up with such a shitty jerk personality?
Remove all the shaming and ridiculing of beginners. then you will have a shorter, instructional positive video. This video is about how to turn a sea kayak?
oh please... man up and learn something
I feel no shame from realizing there is a better way. Thanks for posting these videos. Kayaking is a multi leveled and even zen like sport/hobby when approached with an open mind. When we stop learning we are dead.
Get rid of your ego Walter. Paulo is trying to help you. Listen and learn!
Let's simplify things and consider three groups of people Walter seems to be trying to advocate for.
1) People who know they don't understand how to turn a kayak, but who don't see that as something to be ashamed of, although they know other people will notice their lack of skills. I'm in that camp and so, it seems, is Lance.
Nothing Paolo says seems likely to cause shame to somehow infect this group.
2) People who know they don't understand how to turn a kayak, and who see that as something to be ashamed of. Paolo is specifically offering to help that group understand how to turn a kayak. That may or may not help them stop feeling ashamed. It doesn't seem likely to make them feel worse than they already do.
3) People who don't know they don't understand how to turn a kayak. It seems possible this clip might help them know that. And it might set them on the path to better self knowledge and paddling skills. That doesn't seem as though it would produce shame.
As for ridicule, that word must have a different definition where Walter comes from because there is no sense in which "the subjection of someone or something to contemptuous and dismissive language or behaviour" is applicable here.
Please try to use strong words in ways which represent to others, rather than to you, what you actually mean. Googling definitions may help.
