Brake Light Switch removal testing and repair

  • The problem I had was the brake light would not come on when I pressed on the brake and the cruise control also did not work. I had first checked the fuse but this was ok. The brake switch was removed from a peugeot 406 but this is the same type of switch fitted to many makes of cars. Initially the job looks impossible but as you will see it only takes less than a minute to remove the switch.

    Thanks for this, my elderly neighbour just came round with his brake lights permanently on. I nearly skipped the last bit, having seen how to get to it, but the cleanup at the end was the icing on the cake, which will save him a few bob. Great video.

    Mate, I can't thank you enough for your video and instructions. You saved me $100.00 from not having to take my Peugeot 405 GR to an auto electrician. The contacts were burnt, and soon as I filed them back and put it back in.. BOOM! Brake stop lights going. Thanks heaps for this, your a legend!

    Great help with my 2007 Toyota Tacoma! Interesting that all 3 brake lights were out BUT the brake pedal DID disengage cruise control... Anyway I cleaned off the internal switch contacts like you did at the end of the video, and now everything works perfect. Thanks again for the clear and correct information.

    Thanks for this - just changed the one on my Citroen C8 and your instructions helped enormously. As additional info, the switch has no resistance when the brake is pressed (ie the switch is released). The faulty one I had had full resistance at all times. To my amazement I manged to get one on a Sunday from Motor World!

    Amazing video good sir! Been trying to figure out why my Cruze control doesn't work. Noticed the other day that my break lights don't work either. I was quoted $150 over here in America but I can get the part for $14. Your a lifesaver!

    Thanks so much. Your video is very enlightening. In my case when I opened the brake switch, i sanded the terminal that has shown burns. Then I bended the terminals toward each other, so that in 'pressed' position, they have contact. Works perfectly.

    I have put a milk crate with a cushion next to the door to get level with it in order to rest your bum - you need to be a contortionist to get under the dash if you are anything over 6 foot tall. Now that I know what I am looking for, I found it.
    But, on a P reg 306, you do need to drop down the steering column - easy job, just four M8 nuts and down she comes. There is a hole about the size of a sardine can in a sheet metal box section where you can just about get your hand in and pull the switch out. Thanks very much for the video!

    Pulling anything, out like the brake light switch is easy when you have done it before...but when you're just trying to pull anything out or off seems like the biggest chore is to make mistakes and brake the flimsy brittle plastic holder that hold it in place. Each attachment seems like it was created differently when you don't know how to do it properly. Frustrating...now where do I find the correct plastic holder that I just broke!? I can tell you that you can use a smart phone with a little lighting or a smaller camera to take a shot under the compartments. Just take a quick course on how to do it, or just try it. It's probably like trying to get that brake light switch.

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  8 лет назад +1

      Best place for the plastic ring is the scrappy.
      For filming i now have a mini 4k camera for those tight spots.

    hi!good day! just wondering how about the ´glowplug light´on a dasboard blinking all the way and it´s say´s ÉNGINE WORKSHOP FAULT´..i have a vw touran 2005 model..i have been on a autoshop and they say it can be the ´brakelight switch ´sending some fail codes on a dashboard..but the worse, the auto mechanics keep on saying that..´this thing maybe the problem,or that thing maybe the problem´...i paid nearly 400 bucks to search what is wrong with my car but i found out that they cannot pin point what is the real problem on the car.maybe they are trying to rob me on other way,,please help..thank you in advance..

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  9 лет назад

      Sorry for the delay in replying. Your mechanic could be on the right track. The error you are getting could be linked to the brake light switch or the wiring. I have done a Passat with a similar issue. I tested the brake switch which was working. After clearing the codes it worked for a few days but it came back and it was then I noticed the brake light was not coming on every time. In those days I just replaced the switch and cleared the codes and this resolved the issue. It did take a long time to track this down. Now that I am time rich and money poor I would be more inclined to dismantle the switch and clean the contact points. Electric are a pain. Hope you get it sorted.

    I have a fault on lexia saying something about inconsistency of brake switch...
    also my cruise control does not work.
    do you think this is the problem

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  7 лет назад

      Cruise control on the 406 and Citroens has 2 brake switches. If one is faulty the you will get the message. However the inconsistency message is usually caused by switches getting triggered in the wrong order. With lexia you will be able to see the brake switches being activated. ruclips.net/video/giU21PviWJM/видео.html shows this problem.
      Hope this helps.

    Could a brake light switch cause the fuse to constantly blow?

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  9 лет назад

      renny khan It is unlikely but it is possible. If the wiring in the switch was shorting out it would only put the brake lights on. However if the switch has poor connectivity at the contact points, it could in theory cause an arking power surge as contact is made or broken which could cause a blown fuse. But unlikely. mine had a poor contact but never blew fuses. Remember there are 2 brake switches on a 406. Disconnect both will show if the switches are responsible. I have seen the brake switch wiring fraying on the steering housing, especially if the protective foam has been removed.

    I cannot remove my 2001 Ford KA brake switch for adjustment. The brake lights only come on when the pedal is very firmly pressed. The clip/locking ring(?) at the base of the switch cannot be loosened so that the so-called twist and lock switch can be pulled out. The Ford OEM part number is 92AB13480AB. Any tips anyone?

      In order of least to most destructive.

      Try WD 40 or equivalent.
      Long nose pliers.
      Hammer and Punch on one of the wings
      Hammer and chisel and cut it off.
      Hope it was the first one not the last resort one.

      The brake switch usually operates both brake lights. your problem may lie with the bulbs or the wiring to the bulbs

      I have not done this on a 307. If the switch is not on the brake pedal on the drivers side, I have seen them on the passengers side under the foot well. There is a connecting rod which goes from the drivers to the passenger's side. Hope this helps.
